Chapter 10
The elevator door opened and Adrien walked out onto the roof of the hotel. He breathed in and embraced the cold December air. Even though they were in Spain, it was still freezing outside, but as an ice skater, he was used to it.
He looked around and noticed a luxurious pool overlooking the city. Being so cold out, no one was swimming... And Adrien was tempted to jump in.
He held back. His father had always told him never to swim in the winter, he would get a cold, and a sick skater is a bad skater.
But then again, his father wasn't here.
'Another point,' Adrien though to himself, 'I'm not a skater right now, I'm a coach. Good point Adrien, thank you Adrien.'
And with that Adrien cannonballed into the pool.
He sank to the bottom, and when he floated back up to the top, he let all of his muscles relax. These moments, the few times he got them, reminded him of two things...
Life and love.
He's been denying both since he started skating.
Easily, his mind went back to his main focus, Marinette and her skating career.
In the morning she would be facing the rest of the remaining six female skaters: Alix Kubdel, Myléne Haprèle, Juleka Couffaine, Lila Rossi, and his former teammate, Chloé Bourgeois.
And the last of those six was Marinette Dupain-Cheng, who was currently fast asleep in the hotel room.
He felt so... grateful for her. He was so glad that she was kind enough to take him into her home, and let him be apart of her family. She was so kind....
Now that he thought about it, he should probably get back to her.
He climbed out of the pool and rang out his shirt, but it was a little see through from the water. He walked back to the elevator and pressed the down button, and jumped inside into the warmth.
-----
I rolled over on the bed, trying to fall back asleep, but thoughts were overwhelming my brain. Repeats of my failures from last year played over and over in my head. Turning over, I slammed my face into the pillow and moaned.
Eventually I gave up and decided it was time to get up. Flipping over so I looked towards the ceiling, I sat up and looked around the room.
"Adrien?" I asked, but he wasn't in his bed. Looking out the window, I saw it wasn't day yet, so where was he?
Suddenly there was a click and the door opened.
"Who are- ADRIEN!" I screamed, almost jumping out of my bed.
Adrien stood in the doorway, his shirt and just see through enough to make me blush. He was soaking wet!
"Marinette calm down it's me!" He said with a laugh. He closed the door behind him and started to slip off his drenched shirt.
I yelped and covered my eyes, "A-ADRIEN WHY ARE YOU ALL WET?!?"
"I took a dip." He said with delight, "Did you know this hotel has a pool?"
"I-It's freezing outside!"
"I know, but I couldn't resist! Now I'm s-sh-shivering- so move over!"
I peeped through my fingers and saw Adrien walking over, "NOPE NOPE NOPE!" I shrieked with a laugh, "YOU'LL GET ME WET!" I jumped out of bed and ran around him to the bathroom. He quickly followed me, laughing with delight, and stood in the doorway as I plugged in the hairdryer and turned it on. I aimed it at him and he gave a sigh of relief.
"Marinette," he said, opening his arms and welcoming the warm air, "you are a genius."
"I know." I replied with a smirk.
-----
After practice that morning I suggested that Adrien and I go sightseeing.
"It'll be fun..." I said, rubbing my arm shyly, "I've never been to Barcelona before, so maybe you could show me around?"
Adrien thought a moment, then said, "Of course I will, I've been here plenty of times for competitions, but I thought you usually want to go back to the hotel and relax before the competition tomorrow."
"I want to explore!" I replied, "Walking around and seeing the sights will relax me too."
Adrien smiled, "Well a super heroine must know her terrain," he said, running a hand through his hair, "lets go!"
After quickly going back to the room to change, we went out to the city on a tour led by non other than Adrien Agreste. I never thought I would meet Adrien, much less have him be my coach (and one of my best friends) who went on shopping sprees with me.
By nightfall we had gone through the entire city of Barcelona and got something from what seemed to be every shop in the town. We sat down on a bench nearby an open air market to catch our breath.
Adrien heaved a heavy breath, "That was..." he said between breaths, "the most fun I've had a competition... in my entire life."
I placed the paper shopping bags on the ground next to my feet, "Yeah..." I said through a laugh, "That was really fun."
I looked down the road of the open air market and tried to think.
"Your eyes sparkle when you think." Adrien said. I turned to look at him and smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.
"What's on your mind?" He asked.
"I... nothing...." I said.
"Mari...." He said, knowing I was lying.
I sighed and looked back at the rows of shops lining the street. At the end of the alley I saw a quaint little jewelry shop.
That was it.
"Come on Adrien!" I said, cheering up self up and grabbing his hand, "Let's go to that shop!"
Adrien laughed, "Okay! Okay!"
I ran up to the window and nodded, affirming myself that this was it. Once inside I asked the woman at the desk, "Can I see the ring from the window?" She smiled and nodded politely and walked over, pulling it out and bringing it back to the table. The ring was a silver circle with four claw like braces gripping it at each corner and connecting it to the band.
"I'll take this one please." I told the worker, pulling out my credit card.
"Who's that for?" Adrien asked as he leaned over my shoulder to look at the ring.
"You."
"Me?"
"Yes you." I laughed.
"Why?" He asked.
"For memories, as a thank you, or a lucky charm I guess."
Adrien laughed and ran a hand through his hair, "You are the one who needs a lucky charm, My Lady." He said. He looked down through the glass counter and looked at the different options, then saw a pair of black earrings, "Perfect. I'll take those please." He pulled out his card and laid it on the counter.
"I'll ring this up for you." The woman said, and she went back to the register.
Adrien looked at me, "After this, let's go to the Sagrada Família. We should see it before the competition tomorrow, it's beautiful."
I smiled and nodded in agreement. I've never been, but I heard it was glorious.
-----
Adrien was right, the Sagrada Família was one of the most amazing sights in all of Barcelona. The lights lit up the intricate stain glass windows, coloring the streets.
"It's beautiful...." I said in awe, staring up at the top of the building.
"Yes it is...." Adrien replied. He dug down in the bag from the jewelry shop and pulled out the two small black boxes, holding the jewelry we purchased. He handed me the box with the ring inside and turned to face me.
"I'm sorry I couldn't think of a better way to thank you..." I said, pulling out the silver ring and slipping it on his finger, "I-I just wanted you to have something to remember me."
Once the ring was on his hand and took mine and brought it up to his lips, giving it a small kiss, "My Lady," He said, "I would never forget you."
He opened his box and pulled out the earrings, brushed a few hairs behind my ear and put the pair in.
"Lady Luck is going to take the gold tomorrow." He said.
-----
Early the next morning, while Marinette was still asleep, Adrien took a cab out to the seashore. The sun rose and let light sparkle on the glimmering ocean. He held up a hand to block his eyes from the sun.
He saw someone come up and stand next to him, so he put his hand down. It was Chloé.
"Hi Chloé." Adrien said politely.
Chloé put her chin in her hands, and not looking at him, she asked, "What, are you two dating now?"
"What do you mean?"
"The ring." She stated, grabbing his hand to examine the piece of jewelry, "Did she get it for you?"
"Yes, she did." Adrien replied, pulling his hand away gently, "And no, we're not dating... but maybe someday."
Chloé rolled her eyes, "Both of you are incompetent. I'm going to beat her today just to prove to you that's true."
"I'm glad I'm coaching her." He said.
Chloé looked at him with confusion.
"Not only because she's an excellent skater and person," Adrien continued, "but if I was still skating you wouldn't have nearly enough drive to win."
Chloé seemed to think about this as she looked out onto the ocean.
"I'll see you later, Adrien." She said before she walked back towards the street.
Adrien stood there, watching the seagulls fly by for a moment, thinking about the years to come.
-----
The crowd cheered as the skaters came into the arena, with their coaches and teammates flocking them like armies.
It was just me and Adrien who walked into the arena though. Only us, we had no teammates, only each other.
But we would still win.
