Chapter 1

He never fails to suprise me.

Ever since I first saw him skating.

It's been an unending chain of suprises.

-----

Hi! My name is Marinette Dupain-Cheng! I'm one of many iceskaters representing France in the Grand Prix in Sochi!

... And I just came last in my division.

"No Mom, I-I'm not upset." I lied to her over the phone, sitting in the bathroom stall, "It's fine. I'll... I'll get better. WHAT?!? YOU HAD A PUBLIC VIEWING?!! Oh no... WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M ON SPEAKER?!?" I screamed as I hastily hung up the phone.

For a moment, I stared at my device as the screen went black.

Then I started crying.

"I'm a disgrace..." I whispered through snivles, "I'll never win a gold medal...."

A haughty laugh echoed throughout the bathroom.

I quickly stood up and opened the stall door, wiping my eyes. Standing in front of the sinks was a blonde girl in a puffy yellow cost, white skinny jeans, and a black and white striped shirt.

Chloé Bourgeois.

She huffed, "I'm not suprised it's you bawling in the bathroom Marinette. I am surprised that the audience wasn't crying after watching your performance. It was absolutely horrific!" Chloé said with a laugh.

"My skating isn't horrific Chloé...." I mumbled.

Chloé Bourgeois was another skater from France. We used to go to the same skating rink, where she constantly bullied me. But then her father, Mayor of Paris, made sure she got noticed by the greatest ice skating coach of all time, Gabriel Agreste. So now she goes to a much more grand rink to train.

Chloé slammed her hand against the door of the bathroom stall, blocking my exit.

"Listen to me, moron. I'm tired of seeing your face at every competition. I'm going to be rising through the ranks and I will not have you embarrassing my city. You should just retire and go back to that hovel you call a bakery."

With a hairflip, she removed her arm and adjusted her coat, then  strutted out of the bathroom.

-----

"I'm so sorry Master Fu. I shouldn't have tried to fit in that quad, I could have gotten a better score-"

"It's not a problem, Marinette," My coach, Master Fu, said as we walked towards the exit of the stadium, "Back in my day coming in any place was an honor."

"But I only got 6th because there were only 6 competitors-"

"And you gained experience." He said wisely.

I mumbled to myself and pulled my pink scarf closer to my mouth, but I looked up when I saw cameras flash. I turned and saw Chloé Bourgeois strutting down the hallway, on the arm of the gold medalist in our division, Adrian Agreste.

Oh my god. Adrien Agreste.

He was a tall boy with messy blond hair, wearing a white jacket and a black striped t-shirt with blue jeans. He covered his eyes from the flashing lights of paparazzi. He smiled and waved. As he passed by, I could here him say to Chloé,

"Chloé, your spin sequence could use a little tweaking, I could help you later if you want-"

"Hey I still got silver so who cares Adri-kins?" Chloé replied while posing for the cameras.

I watched in awe, stopping in my tracks. I faintly heard Master Fu talking to me but I wasn't listening.

Adrien had been my ice skating idol since I first saw him on TV in his first competition. He had a big influence on my skating.

Adrien turned around and saw me staring, "Oh hi!" He said, his voice like music to my ears, "Did you want a photo?"

Adrien Agreste, my idol who had just won gold in our division, was now taking pity on me and talking to me like a naive little girl.

I blushed and pulled my scarf around my mouth, quickly turned around and walked the other way after my coach.

"Hey!" I heard him shout behind me, but I was already at the door. I pulled it open and walked outside, but he followed.

"Hey," He said, "If you don't want a photo, let me at least give you my umbrella. It's pouring rain out here." He opened a black umbrella and held it out to me, "I thought your routine was great."

Blood rushed to my cheeks. He thought I was good?

I hesitantly took the umbrella.

We looked at each other and he smiled. He turned when he heard someone call his name from the inside, Chloé.

He smiled once more and then ran back inside.

I watched in utter awe as he walked away, then I heard Master Fu calling me and I ran out.

-----

I was going down the escalator in the airport by myself, (Master Fu had gone to China from Sochi on a business trip) when I heard someone shout my name.

"MARI! MARINETTE GET OVER HERE!"

I turned and saw my best friend Alya holding a large 'Welcome Home' banner.

"ALYA!" I shouted as I ran towards her, rolling my suitcase behind me.

We collided and gave each other a big hug, screaming about how much we've missed each other. I had been training with Master Fu in China for what seemed like forever now, but now I was finally home.

"Everyone from school saw you skating, they loved your piece!"

I let go and put my face in my hands, "Ughhh that piece was horrible. My face slammed into the well when I tried to land that jump..."

Alta laughed slightly, "Okay but other than that, it was great." She put an arm around me, "Come on lets go back to your place, your family misses you!"

"Actually, I wanted to back to the rink."

"How come? I thought you missed home?"

"I do, I just wanted to show you something."

-----

We made it to the old ice skating rink, my home away from home. The two of us walked inside and I saw a little girl who I recognized as Manon, standing on her tiptoe to put rental iceskates away.

"We're closed- MARINETTE!" She shrieked when she realized who I was. She ran out from behind the counter and jumped into my arms.

"Hi Manon! What are you doing here?" I said, holding the small girl in my arms.

"I haven't had a babysitter since you've been gone and Alta had to work here so I've been working here too! I missed you so much!" She said, digging her head into my shoulder.

"I missed you too Manon. Do you mind if I skate for a bit?"

"GO AHEAD!" She said with a smile, "If I can watch."

I considered it, "Sure Manon."

The three of us walked to the back of the rink and I sat down and put on my skates. We walked through the creaky double doors and I pushed aside the gate and skated onto the ice.

I pulled off my jacket and laid it on the rink's edge, I pulled a red and black mask out of my pocket and put it on.

"What a beautiful costume." Alya said, admiring what I was wearing.

"Thanks," I replied as I handed her my phone, which had the music on it, "I made it myself."

My costume was a red dress with black accents. It had a sheer black sleeve with dots along with matching tights. My blue hair was tied up in a ballet bun. The red and black mask I was wearing really tied the outfit together.

I skated to the center of the rink. Looking at Alya, I said, "I've been practicing this piece for a long time, but haven't done it at competition." I nodded to her and she pressed play.

The music started, going straight into a fun pop beat. I followed the moves that I had watched a thousand times on the internet and at competitions.

Alya automatically gasped as she heard the music, "It's The Dance of Chat Noir!" She yelped.

She was right. Adrien had danced with this piece and won the World Grand Prix. I've been watching it on repeat since I first saw it.

I imagined watching the videos as I did the routine myself.

He has a smirk on his face as he skates, as if he knows some secret to talent that no one else does. He seems to fly as he jumps, keeping his arms close to his heart and then shoots them out like a fighter protecting a loved one. Adrien is my muse, my idol.

I was frozen in my ending pose before I even noticed.

Alya stood there for a moment, in what seemed to be complete and utter shock. Then she burst into applause.

"MARINETTE I'VE NEVER SEEN YOU SKATE SO WELL THAT WAS AMAZING YOU HIT A QUAD SALCHOW OH MY GOD YOU'VE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DO THAT BEFORE OH MY GOD I CAN'T BREATHE-" She shrieked before running out of breath.

I was suprised, I haven't been able to hit a good quad before. I looked around, "Where's Manon?" I asked.

Alya looked around, then shrugged, "She probably went to get my phone and prank text people while I was distracted," She grabbed my arm and said, "Get your coat, we really need to get you home, your mom and dad want to see you!"

-----

A few weeks later

I was walking home from delivering another order for the family bakery. I opened the door and I felt something fuzzy curl across my legs. Yelping, I looked down and saw a black cat purring against my leg.

"Awwww..." I said, picking up the small creature. It reminded me of my old cat (those my cat was a ginger red), Tikki. I carressed the animal's fur, "Where'd you come from little guy?"

My mom smiled and walked out from behind the counter, "His name is Plagg. He belongs to a guest of yours."

"What? I wasn't expecting anyone."

"That's what he said you would say. Aparently it's a suprise visit, and he wants to stay for a while. He's upstairs in the living room, he looked starving. I'm determined to give him some food."

I made a face, but walked towards the staircase and walked upstairs, still carrying the black cat in my arms.

I opened the door and entered the living room, looking around, I saw someone in the kitchen, talking to my father while stuffing his face with cookies.

Realizing who it was, I yelped and dropped the cat, "OH MY GOD I'M SO SORRY I DROPPED YOUR CAT MR. AGRESTE OH MY GOD YOU- YOU'RE- YOU ARE ADRIEN AGRESTE!"

Adrien turned from his plate of cookies and smiled, "Hi! Your cookies are great. Is it true you bake them right here?"

I was in a complete state of shock, "UM I- UM YES WE BAKE THEM HERE- Well not here we bake them downstairs in the bakery, BUT I'M GOING OFF TOPIC- What are you doing here, Mr. Agreste?"

He stood up, "Please call me Adrien. No need for formalities, since I am here to be your coach." He said with a soft smile.

My jaw dropped.

"Marinette, say something!" My father said.

"I- uh- uh- I..." I stuttered, "It would be an honor to have you as my iceskating coach, Mr- I mean, Adrien. But... But how did you find out about me?"

"Oh yeah!" Adrien said, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, opening it to a video, "A girl named Alya uploaded this video of you skating to my piece. It was astounding! I just had to come and coach you."

I put on a fake smile. "Would you excuse me for a second?" I walked upstairs into my room and pulled out my phone, calling Alya.

"Hello-" she asked.

"ALYAHOWCOULDYOUDOTHISYOUPLOADEDMYSKATONGWHATTHEHECKALYAADRIENAGRESTEISATMYHOUSEANDHEWANTSTOCOACHMEWHATWEREYOUTHINKING?!"

"... Give me a second...." Alya said calmly.

A few minutes later she came back to the phone.

"Manon took my phone out of my pocket while you were skating and recorded it. She uploaded it to the internet. Don't worry about it. NOW IF ADRIEN AGRESTE IS IN YOUR HOUSE QUIT TALKING TO ME AND GO DOWNSTAIRS!"

And with that she hung up.
