Cute Nurse by Summer Cheng (@SummerCheng37)
Description
Luka is hurt in the army and is assigned to a rather attractive nurse.
What happens when he decides he likes her?
Luka's POV:
He finds himself on the other side of the enemy's lines. He is hit by a grenade but survives. He is half-blinded by the impact. He wakes up in an army hospital. He hears the voice of a nurse.
"Who are you?"
"I am the nurse, Chole. Nice to see you are awake, Sergeant Luka Cuffaine."
Luka shook his head. He did not feel he deserved the promotion. Not when he was sure there were others wounded worse than himself.
"Are you alright?"
"Miss Chole, It is pleasure to meet you. I could use a glass of water."
"Water, sure right away sergeant Cuffaine."
"Just call me Luka. I think there must be a mistake. See, my comrade Nathaniel Kurtzberg was hit by the blast and he lost an arm. I think he should have gotten the promotion."
"Oh, from what I hear he was promoted to first lieutenant. You did not hear it from me though."
Luka smiled. Perhaps, it was that bad being promoted after all. He tried to glance in the nurse's direction as she walked away. He frowned. What happened to him? Why could not he make out a single thing from his left eye and why was everything blurry to the other one?
He tried not to panic as she placed the water cup in his left hand.
"Is something the matter Sergeant Luka?"
"Yes, I can barely see you. I can not make out more than your golden shiny hair. Even then it looks a bit blurry."
"Hmm, well your chart states you lost all your vision in your left eye and when you were brought in the doctor said it was possible for you to lose the rest of your vision in your right eye."
Luka sobbed like a baby at the bad news.
"Sir, it is okay, I am sure that your family will still love you and..."
"You do not understand, Nurse Chole. I was a model. A model for a sunglasses company before I was drafted."
Chole gasped. She did not know he used to be in commercials for some sunglasses company as their model. Oh, dear.
"How old are you?"
"I am twenty, and you?"
"Ha, leave it to me to fall for an older woman he muttered."
Chole blushed.
Luka smirked. "I am eighteen Miss Chole, but I assure you I will be nineteen soon. My birthday is tomorrow."
"What shall we do to celebrate it?"
"Celebrate what? I never had a party before or anything."
Chole shook her head. She felt the least she could see he was given a party before he was sent home. She knew he would be due to the eye damage and the fact he had surgery to save his life due to the puncture in his left lung. He was fortunate to be alive.
Luka sighed. He drank some water, then sank back onto the hard surface of the bed inside the mash unit recovery area for the soldiers who were blessed to have made it.
The next day, Chole and all the nurses sang Happy Birthday to Sergeant Luka Cuffaine. The other soldiers in the room joined in all except the blonde-haired boy in the back. He pouted and held a pillow close to his chest.
Luka blew out the candles on the cake with a little help from Nurse Chole.
He refused the first piece. "Give one to the fellow in back."
Chole wondered how he knew as his vision had gotten worse in the last few days.
She took the cake slice to the soldier he mentioned. "Here Sergeant Luka says it is for you."
"Tell him, thank you for me." He signed.
She nodded her head as she used sign language to let this deaf soldier know she would be glad too.
She went back to Luka. "He said to tell you to thank you."
Luka took the next slice and insisted she give it to someone else. Finally, the last slice was given out as he had given away all the others. He ate it and started to smile.
"It is delicious. Chocolate, yum. My favorite."
He reached out and squeezed Chole's hand. "Try to keep in touch Miss Sweet Shiny Hair, Chole."
Chole blushed again. This time she did not care who saw, she squeezed his hand back.
"I will do my best, Sergeant Luka."
She tried to hold the tears back. He was leaving at the end of the day. She had not even told him yet.
Chole walked away. The next nurse, Marinette arrived.
Marinette frowned. The solider was friends with her ex. She took a deep breath.
"Solider hear you are shipping out soon."
"Tell Miss Chole, I will miss her."
"Okay, I will."
Marinette had no intention to do such a thing. She helped Chole pack his stuff after she spoke to him. She saw a letter from his sister, Juleka.
"Dear Brother,
I am so proud of you. So are mom and dad. Can't wait to see you!
Do not worry, I promise not to tease you.
I was shocked and saddened to hear you lost your sight.
I know it must be hard on you as you used to be so good at all sorts of things, fishing, playing checkers, reading, writing poetry, and much more. I supposed you will have to learn all kinds of new things.
Big, brother, I love you.
See you soon.
Your sister,
Juleka."
Marinette cried and felt bad for prying into his personal effects. She packed the letter inside his pack. Then decided she would make sure to tell Chole what he said after all.
"Chole, Sergeant Cuffaine, said to tell you, he will miss you."
"Marinette you had no right to read his letter."
"I know and I am sorry. Send me to another unit, home, or whatever. Do not tell me I am a bad nurse."
"Marinette, I know Kurtzberg broke your heart but that is no reason to take it out on others."
Marinette nodded her head. She knew Chole was right.
Chole hugged Luka. Marinette felt a tinge of jealousy. How she wished she had someone to care for her as much as those two did in such a short time.
"Miss, come here." The blonde signed.
Marinette walked over to the deaf solider. She recalled the sign language course she had taken in high school and the more recent one in college.
"Hi, there solider. How are you holding up?" She signed.
Luka hugged Chole back.
"I love you," Luka muttered.
"I love you too."
Chole wept. Luka sensed she was sad. He reached up and wiped away a tear. Then, he did something he never had done ever before not even when he dated Lora in high school before she dumped him for someone else. He kissed her.
Chole gasped. Luka kissed her. It was the best kiss she had ever had. The only other one is given to her on a dare in the tenth grade. She slowly returned the kiss.
"Goodbye, Sergeant Luka."
Chole walked away before she kiss him again. She knew if she did it would only make it harder to let him go.
Luka went home with a happiness he had not had in years. It was all due to the cute nurse.
...Fast forward, one year later...
Luka heard footsteps approaching. He was on the porch of a special home for the blind.
"Who is it?"
"Stand your business!"
He seemed angry.
She took a deep breath. Then spoke, "Is that any way to great your nurse, soldier?"
"Chole, is that you?"
"Yes!"
"How did you find me?"
"It took some work, but my friend, Nurse Marinette Dupain-Cheng helped me."
"Is it legal for you to be here?"
"Solider, the war is over."
"Stop calling me solider then. I am Luka."
"Fine, only if you promise not to call me nurse."
"Sure, thing sweet golden shiny hair, Chole."
Chole sat beside him. He held her hand.
"So, did you mean it?" She asked.
"Mean what exactly?"
"When you said you loved me?"
"Yes!"
Chole smiled. "I was hoping you would say that Luka."
Chole touched his face. She heard him sigh.
"I love you, Luka."
"I love you too, Chole."
Chole kissed him and he kissed her. At that moment, the two decided they would never let go not again.
"Will you marry me?"
"Yes!"
Luka grabbed her hand and held out a box. "Then, Chole I believe this is yours."
Chole grinned as she placed the engagement ring on her hand.
A week later, Chole and Luka were married in a small church wedding. Luka's parents, sister, friends, and Chole's half-sister, her father and mother, and Marinette and Adrien came too.
Marinette caught the bouquet.
Adrien smirked. "I suppose it means it is you and me next, babe." He signed.
"Is that a proposal, Adrien?" Marinette signed back.
"Maybe."
The end...
Until the next Lukaloe one-shot story,
bye-bye, little owlets!
