Luck... Or Lack Thereof

A/N: A fun little idea I came up with, inspired by an episode of The Flash and Nobody Special Cosplay.

Note: This fic does not endorse gambling or going to casinos underaged. Marinette and Adrien planned extensively ahead of time and are only playing after they have turned twenty-one.

Second Note: If you don't know what Blackjack is, it's a cards game where the dealer deals cards until someone gets exactly 21. If you go over 21, you lose.

"I don't know... maybe this isn't a good idea?"

Marinette rolled her eyes. "Oh come on, Adrien. It's been months since you and I turned 21. I think it's time."

She stepped closer to him, eye level from the black pumps she was wearing, her midnight dress shimmering in the chandelier's scattered light. A smirk grew on her face, not unlike the one she sported as Ladybug. "Unless you're a... scaredy cat?"

Adrien's eyebrows shot up, all restraint disappearing. "Oh, it's on."

"Yes!" Marinette spun around in her heels, her arms flailing as she stopped herself from falling. With a coy smile, she grabbed Adrien's hand and pulled him into the casino.

Marinette hopped off the barstool, letting out a whoop as the chips clinked in her hand. She turned towards Adrien, who's eyes were nervously scanning the crowd under the dim lighting. "This'll be fun- I promise."

"I know, there's a reason I suggested it," Adrien agreed as he put on a confident smile. "It's just- these places have a stigma for things getting out of control."

"And that's why we have a limit," Marinette reminded. "We're not spending any more than 20 euros. That way, we don't become broke after one night."

"Of course, milady," Adrien agreed. He pointed to the nearest game, a traditional slot machine with spaces for three chips. "Ladies first."

Marinette sauntered towards the machine and inserted the coins with a hand on her hip. "Here goes nothing..."

She pulled on the giant lever with all her might and watched as the symbols lined up.

"Cherry..." Marinette smiled towards Adrien. "Cherry..." Her grin widened. "CHERRY!"

The machine lit up, bathing Adrien and Marinette in bright yellows and reds, and began spewing out tokens worth nearly half a million euros. "Quick, quick!" Marinette commanded as both their buckets started to overflow. "Get another three buckets!"

Adrien dashed across the casino, with the speed only a superhero could have, and returned with armfuls of buckets. "Is this enough?"

Marinette nodded and shoved the buckets underneath the machine, leaning back to watch the tokens collect. "Oh my goodness, we're rich."

"As long as we don't buy a giant, cold mansion with this money, I'm good," Adrien muttered. He turned to Marinette, his smile mirroring hers. "How about we test my luck?"

"Sure. What harm could it do?"

A lot of harm apparently. Because, three blackjack games and one slot machine later, they were down to 250,000 euros.

"What the-?" Adrien's eyebrows furrowed into a perplexed glare. "How could we have lost all that money?"

"Some luck you have!" Marinette exasperatedly gestured to the two empty buckets. "Why don't you let me try again?"

Adrien nodded, handing her the one card in front of him and pointing to the dealer. "Don't get over twenty-one."

"Like you did the last three times?"

Adrien groaned.

Marinette carefully focused on the cards in front of the dealer and nodded every few turns. Five rounds in, she had won every time.

With tokens in front of her piling up almost taller than her, Marinette turned back with a challenging nod towards Adrien. "How's that for not getting over twenty-one?"

"I- I-" Adrien shook his head. "Unbelievable."

"Precisely," agreed a young man standing beside Marinette. "What's your secret, lady?"

Marinette shrugged. "Just lucky I guess."

"Well your boyfriend over there sure isn't," the man said with a laugh. "I'd like to see you two play a game against each other."

Marinette's eyes lit up. "What do you say, chaton?"

"Well... um... It's a game of luck, so maybe no?" Adrien stared at the floor.

Marinette leaned closer and whispered in his head, "Are you a scaredy cat?"

"NEVER!" Adrien cried, pumping his fist in the air. He whipped around to the dealer. "One private game for me and the lady, please."

The man who had spoken to them before laughed. "You two are competitive, I see."

"You have no idea," Adrien confirmed just as Marinette said, "That's an understatement."

Marinette and Adrien leaned over opposite sides of the table, eyes locked on each other in fierce determination. Even the dealer had to bite back a laugh as Marinette curtly told him to hand her the first card.

"Ace... so eleven" She carefully studied Adrien who asked for the same and turned up with a seven.

The dealer held another card towards Marinette who shooed it away, her hands fidgeting with the card in her hand. She looked up to meet Adrien's challenging gaze and watched as he accepted another card that turned up as a five.

By then, a small crowd had gathered around the table, attracted to what Adrien and Marinette has started treating as the game of a lifetime. With every move, tensions rose and the crowd leaned closer.

"One more card," Adrien requested, his eyes landing on Marinette's cards totaling to 17. His frown morphed into a triumphant smile as he tilted the cards towards Marinette. "Twenty-one."

The crowd gasped, most of them shocked after how many had been betting on Marinette. Even Adrien himself seemed shocked, grinning as Marinette knocked back her chair in defeat. "I- what?"

"Twenty-one," Adrien repeated. "Guess I'm not so unlucky after all."

"But- but- how?" Marinette shook her head. "You've lost every other game we played since we came here."

"I guess all I needed," Adrien began, walking over to Marinette and planting a kiss on her forehead. "Was to verse my lucky charm."

The crowd let out a sweet sigh and the couple turned around, realizing for the first time that they were surrounded by people.

"Okay... good game guys!" Adrien yelled, maneuvering Marinette through the crowd. "Thanks for watching!"

Finally, when they had reached an empty corner, arms full of tokens ready to cash in from their winnings, Marinette pressed her lips against Adrien's.

"I'm the luckiest guy in the world when I'm with you," Adrien breathed when the broke apart.

Marinette smiled. "I don't care what our miraculouses say... there's no good luck or bad luck that each of us have."

"Maybe a bit of good luck." Adrien pointed to the buckets. "And bad luck a bit too... I'm glad I didn't lose all the money."

"I'm happy we did this," Marinette agreed. "It was fun."

Adrien nodded. "I suppose we can treat ourselves to a few things now, can't we?"

"A few things? Adrien, we won a million euros."

"That's true." Adrien swung an arm around Marinette's shoulders. "I'd say this casino was a pretty good idea."
