Chapter 28: Wherefore Art Thou, Trollhunter Part 1

"This is..." Toby began as he and Jim stared out at the splendor that is Heartstone Trollmarket, leaving them speechless.

"Yeah..." Jim finished off, knowing exactly what he wast thinking.

"Woah!" Toby exclaimed as he pulled out his phone and started taking a video of the scene in front of them.

"Pretty much." Jim agreed in his awe.

"This is your home?" the Trollhunter asked with a chuckle as he descended down the last flight of stairs that entered the hidden civilization.

"Trollmarket is home, and heart, and sanctuary for all good Trolls." Blinky answered as Jim, followed by Toby as he recorded everything, reached the bottom of the stairs.

"This way my friends, there's much to see." The six eyed troll said before he started to lead the way.

"Dang! And here I thought the only thing underneath our town was dirt and plumbing." Toby remarked as he and Jim low-fived while following behind Blinky and Aaarrrgghh!!!.

"Stay close. Besides Miraculous Holders, human feet have never graced the ground of Trollmarket before." Blinky warned as the group walked among the trolls, catching their attention as they walked past.

"Human?" A troll questioned as said humans walked past their stall, halting the boys from their wonder in fear of confrontation.

"Friends." Aaarrrgghh!!! explained with a huff before the group continued on, the boys worrying melting back into awe.

"This is crazy! Are you getting this Tobes? Marinette is going to flip out over this!!" Jim exclaimed as he continued to take in everything, hoping to be able to show this to their sister at a later time.

"Oh yeah, on it!" Toby confirmed as he started to take more photos of Trollmarket, its inhabitants going about their business, and the majesty of it all. He even managed to catch a few selfies of the two boys with large groups of confused and surprised trolls. "Check it out!" the rotund boy exclaimed as he started pointing at crystals.

"Peridot, Topaz, Cassiterite! Corneroupi..." Toby excitedly listed off as he looked at the numerous geodes, his geo-nerd side showing off. But before he could finish his sentence, he realized the rock he was admiring was actually a Troll. "Uh, hi." The boy nervously greeted before awkwardly joining back up with the group who were a good distance away.

"Your knowledge of minerals is almost Troll-like Tobias!" Blinky complimented as Toby caught up with the rest of them.

"So, your kind? You all live here?" Jim asked as they continued walking.

"Trolls travel from afar to our market, to find comfort and residence. You'll find almost anything you need, and sometimes you'll find what you never knew you needed!" Blinky answered as they walked deeper into the city, unaware of a big blue troll covered in crystals watching them from the shadows. As they kept walking, little gnomes scuttle around their feet, making Jim look down to see one of them near his feet, looking up at him.

"Oh, hey little guy! That's a cute pointy hat..." Jim cooed as he looked down at the tiny creature, only to be surprised by it hissing at him. "And pointy teeth!" the Trollhunter exclaimed in surprise when the gnome showed off its sharp teeth, jumping back from the critter

"Look out! Go away! Get out of here! Vile vermin! Begone!" Blinky shouted as he ran back to Jim and tried to stomp on the gnomes, making them scatter. One of the gnomes stayed back and blew a raspberry at the troll before it ran off, leaving them behind.

"What is that?" Jim asked as he took in the fact he was nearly attacked by a pint-sized creature.

"Gnomes are vermin. Pickpockets, scum of the Earth!" Blinky explained as he dusted his hands off. "We only tolerate them for their grooming services." the six-eyed troll continued.

"Grooming?" Jim asked, suddenly curious by Blinky's statement. He had been wondering what type of hygiene situation trolls had.

"They eat the parasites on the larger trolls." Blinky explained as he pointed at Aaarrrgghh!!! while a few gnomes unknowingly demonstrated how they earn their keep, before the large troll shooed them off.

"Jim! Jim! Check it out!" Toby exclaimed as Jim began to turn a corner in the path, pointing at the large orange crystal in the middle of the market. "Maximum coolosity there!" the geology nerd gushed as he ran to the balcony that allowed the group to get a closer look at the colossal gemstone.

"Look at that, It's amazing!" Jim exclaimed while Toby took pictures of it.

"Heartstone." Aaarrrgghh!!! said as the boys took in the beautiful sight.

"The lifeforce of Trollkind! The means that keeps us from crumbling to stone, and the source of light and sustenance!" Blinky explained, revealing just how the trolls survived underground for so long.

"Okay, that's totally the bomb!" Toby exclaimed, looking over at Jim who nodded in agreement. Don't get them wrong, thanks to Hawkmoth showing up in Paris, they have seen some pretty cool things happen from the news outlets that they had access to. But this was on a whole new level of amazing!

"What are humans doing here?" A troll behind the group questioned, bringing them out of their sightseeing to turn around and see the growing crowd. Slowly but surely, more and more trolls added their own hurtful comments into the conversation, while Jim and Toby only took it like champs.

"I think we've attracted the paparazzi." Toby noted as the comments died down, allowing Blinky to take the stage.

"Friends, there is no need to be afraid, he is the Trollhunte–" Blinky began, only to be interrupted by the blue troll from before as they burst through the crowd.

"What is this!?" The blue troll demanded as he lumbered towards the group.

"I was just getting to that, Draal." Blinky responded, revealing the troll's name to be Draal as he backed up in fear of the bigger troll's reaction.

"Besides Miraculous holders, human feet have never sullied the ground of Trollmarket before. Who are these flesh bags?" Draal demanded to know as he approached Jim, getting closer into his personal space as the crystal-spiked troll examined the boy.

"Believe it or not, he is... um. How do I put this? Our new Trollhunter!" Blinky answered while Toby hid behind him, hoping to avoid Draal's fury. The crowd gasped in shock, not taking in the news very well.

"He can't be the Trollhunter! He's not a Troll!" Draal exclaimed before he pounded the ground with his fists, knocking Jim backwards into Aaarrrgghh!!!

"Amulet chose." Aaarrrgghh!!! argued, making Draal growl at the gray troll in anger.

"Try to remain calm! Destiny is just-" Blinky began, trying to calm Draal and the crowd down.

"Show him Jimbo!" Toby piped up knowing that while Blinky meant well, actions would speak louder than words in this case. So with slight reluctance, Jim pulled out the amulet.

"For the power of Merli-'' Jim began, accidentally saying the incantation wrong.

"Glory!" Blinky corrected.

"Right, sorry." Jim whispered, thankful for the correction.

"For the glory of Merlin, Daylight is mine to command!" the Trollhunter incanted, causing the amulet to glow and magically equip him in his armor, leaving the crowd shocked.

"Pretty cool, right?" Jim asked, hoping that his display had won over some of the crowd.

"A human protecting us? They haven't done so in centuries!" A troll from the crowd exclaimed, while another one in the back fainted in shock.

"They are nothing but traitors!" added another one "Self righteous vermin and cowards!"

"Bushagal! I am Draal, son of Red Scarab and Kanjigar, and the amulet's rightful heir!" Draal proclaimed, leaving both Jim and Toby in shock.

"Uh- You're their son? He's their SON!?" Jim questioned, turning to face Blinky to confirm Draal's claim. The worried look on Blinky's face was all he needed to know that it was true.

"Yeah, I can see how this could be a problem." Toby remarked as he stepped out from behind Blinky.

"After my mother had to relinquish her Miraculous, making it impossible for me to inherit it, I was set to be my father's successor. When he fell in battle, the honor should've passed to me!" Draal growled in anger before he attempted to remove the Amulet from Jim, only for a burst of magic to blast him backwards into a stall, while Aaarrrgghh!!! caught Jim in his hands.

"Amulet chose!" Aaarrrgghh!!! repeated, which only served to further drive Draal's anger.

"We'll see what Vendel has to say about this." Draal threatened as he stood up from the ground while the group quickly walked past him.

"Feel free to vigil. In the meanwhile, lots of Trollhunter business to be done! Draal, wonderful to see you as always." Blinky farewelled as they continued on, making Draal growl in anger. He wasn't done with this human Trollhunter... not by a long shot.

The group walked off to where Blinky and Aaarrrgghh!!! were leading them while Toby ended up excitedly examining a very polished stone wall. As they walked further into the tunnel, Jim's armor suddenly deactivated.

"Um, what just happened?" Jim questioned after the amulet fell into his awaiting hands.

"The amulet responded to your unconscious command, Master Jim. You are at ease, are you not?" Blinky questioned as he turned to face Jim as the boy looked at the relic in his hand.

"I am, actually." Jim admitted in slight accomplishment.

"It senses that! You are beginning to master it!" Blinky exclaimed, as Jim put the amulet in his pocket while Blinky continued to lead them down the tunnel. When it opened up, it revealed the gigantic arena awaiting them, leaving the two boys in further amazement.

"Holy trolls! Is this a palace?" Jim excitedly questioned as the group started to cross a rock bridge linking the end of the tunnel to the arena.

"This is 'The Heroes Forge'!" Blinky proclaimed as they crossed the bridge. As they walk along the footpath, Toby peers over the edge to see how deep the chasm underneath is.

"Ooh." Toby awed before he took a picture, only for Jim to pretend to push Toby off a second later. "AHH! Don't do that again!" the geo-nerd exclaimed in fear, much to Jim's amusement.

"C'mon." Jim said before leading Toby back to the group, where they reached the end of the footpath and stood in the center of the arena. "Magnifico." the Trollhunter uttered in Italian, amazed by the space. As he looked around, Jim suddenly noticed the numerous statues of Trolls placed upon giant pillars around the arena.

"Wait, are these..." Jim began to ask.

"Trollhunters, and Troll Miraculous holders," Aaarrrgghh!!! answered, intentionally interrupting Jim's question.

"Yours and some of your sister's predecessors, Master Jim. A line of heroism that reaches back to the ages of Merlin!" Blinky regaled as the boys looked at the statues of the fallen heroes, Toby taking many more pictures as he did so, before settling their gaze on the one empty spot in the arena. "This is the place of the final reposed, Kanjigar 'the Courageous'.'." the six eyed troll explained when he saw where Jim and Toby were looking.

"One day there will be a statue of you here, Master Jim." Blinky proudly promised, only for Jim's face to turn from awe, and into worry at the words. "One day very far off into the future of course!" the four armed troll quickly reassured, hoping that he hadn't caused too much worry for Jim.

"Yeah about that, there's just one thing I'm not getting." Toby began, bringing the group's attention to him.

"Just one?" Jim questioned his best friend teasingly, considering there was a lot that Jim himself hadn't gotten yet.

"You guys are Trolls. So 'Trollhunter' sounds a little like you hunt yourselves, y'know?" Toby pointed out, not quite understanding that part of Jim's new responsibilities.

"Hunt bad Trolls. Gumm-Gumms," Aaarrrgghh!!! explained as he patted Jim's back a little too hard, making him wince in pain.

"Not exactly the most terrifying name." Jim admitted as he held his shoulder to ease the pain, deciding to be a little optimistic about his chances against the so-called 'Gumm-Gumm's'.

"In Troll-speak, Gumm-Gumm means 'Bringer of horrible, slow, painful, and thoroughly calculated death'." Blinky revealed, leaving the two boys in shock.

"Oh." Jim uttered, his earlier optimism fading away before Aaarrrgghh!!! pushed him forward and towards Blinky.

"But do not be too concerned Master Jim. The Gumm-Gumms were exiled to the Darklands centuries ago. Only one roams free!" Blinky explained as he reassured Jim while walking towards the back wall of the arena.

"And wants to kill you," Aaarrrgghh!!! added on, allowing Toby to connect the dots before Jim could.

"Wait, Bular is one of the unspeakably evil Trolls!?" Toby questioned, causing Jim to facepalm himself at the turn of events.

'Can this get any more delightful?' Jim sarcastically questioned himself.

"Indeed. His Father and the rest of them now remain exiled to the Darklands, but they have been trying to escape for centuries! I sense ill times are upon us. Hence the need for us to begin Master Jim's training now! Blinky explained fearfully as he stood near a large, round rock sticking out from one of the pillars on the back wall. "Step back please!" the six eyed troll asked, to which the boys and Aaarrrgghh!!! all step back a few steps.

"A little further Tobias." Blinky requested, making Toby step back further. But it still didn't seem far enough for Blinky's preference. "Oh, very well." Blinky sighed before he placed his two right hands onto the sphere in the wall and pressed it inwards. A second later, a large amount of traps that were conceded in the pillars around the arena were activated, causing the group to scatter.

"That's a big blade!" Toby exclaimed when a curved blade popped out of the ground and nearly hit him and Jim.

"Oh no." Jim uttered before he dodged a swinging ax heading right for him, while Toby ran to the wall of the arena to avoid getting hit. Jim then continued to doge all of the swinging blades and traps that came his way, ending up leaning against the wall opposite of where Blinky was standing to catch his breath.

"Excellent reflexes Master Jim!" Blinky commented while Toby screamed in panic as he avoided the traps.

"Great! But maybe we could start off easy? Like you know, with less... grindy things?" Jim asked, hoping to bring things down a notch, while Blinky smiled at him as he leaned on the wall where the sphere was.

"Blinkous Galadrigal!" a voice boomed from across the room. Suddenly becoming very fearful, Blinky quickly deactivated the room as a tall, pale, elderly troll walked in. "Blinkous Galadrigal," the old troll shouted as he walked towards the group while the traps deactivated and hid themselves again.

"That's your name?" Jim questioned the ashamed Blinky.

"Horrible, I know." Blinky admitted as the elderly troll reached them.

"I wish to meet the fleshbag supposedly chosen by the amulet." the old troll proclaimed before he looked over to Toby, and leaned into his personal space. "I am Vendel, son of Rundel, son of Kilfred." the elder, now revealed to be the 'Vendal' Draal had mentioned before, introduced to the confused Toby.

"Uh, Toby. Son of Ralph. I live with my Nana." Toby responded, despite his confusion, before Vendel started to examine his body.

"Produce the amulet, Trollhunter." Vendel demanded before he found Toby's phone, much to the boy's shock.

"My phone!" Toby exclaimed, grabbing it back before the elder troll could accidentally break it.

"I think I'm the fleshbag that you're looking for." Jim piped up before he took out the amulet from his back pocket.

"Amulet chose!" Aaarrrgghh!!! said, repeating what he had told Draal earlier.

"Hmmm, so Draal tells me. While we have been protected by human Miraculous holders before, this is ridiculous!" Vendel exclaimed as he abandoned his examination of Toby and walked over to Jim. "However the amulet has been known to make ill-fated choices..." The elder troll began as he leaned towards Jim.

"... as YOU know better than most." Vendel finished as he looked over to the now embarrassed Blinky, leaving Jim confused while the old troll walked away.

"What's that mean?" Jim asked, wanting to know what Vendel was talking about.

"Blinky trained Trollhunter before," Aaarrrgghh!!! explained as he pointed up at a statue above them. "Unkar 'the Unfortunate'," the large troll said as he revealed the name of the cowering Trollhunter's statue.

"Why's he 'Unfortunate'?" Jim asked.

"First night out, torn." Aaarrrgghh!!! explained, which left more questions than answers.

"Like conflicted?" Jim questioned for clarification, not prepared for the correct answer.

"No. Limb from limb." Aaarrrgghh!!! answered as he made a tearing gesture with his hands, leaving Jim in shock. A second later, as if to prove a point, the arm of Unkar's statue fell off and almost crushed Toby before he dodged it in the nick of time.

"If the amulet chose true, the Soothscryer will reveal it," Vendel proclaimed from the center of the arena as he gestured to a spot on the floor.

"Please, Master Jim hasn't had even an hours training!" Blinky protested, trying to get Vendel to change his mind. Unfortunately for them, Vendel didn't listen as he forcefully gestured to the spot on the floor again. Jim walked over, and put his feet onto two feet-shaped indents in the ground, to which the action caused the amulet to glow. The amulet then triggered the lines on the floor to glow a fiery red, before the floor opened up to allow a large platform in front of the boy to rise, revealing the Soothscryer.

"Behold the Soothscryer! It will judge your true spirit! Insert your right hand Trollhunter." Vendel instructed after making his proclamation.

"Um, I'm gonna get it back right?" Jim questioned as he glanced back at Vendel, while he stood in front of the Soothscryer as it towered over him.

"That is part of the test." Vendel reassured, while seemingly having a ball with Jim's nervousness.

"Oh great." Jim sighed in relief. "Tobes, Tobes! Come here and help me!" the Trollhunter whispered to his best friend, needing help to get to the top of the Soothscryer.

"Okay Jimbo. But I am not sticking my hand in there!" Toby exclaimed as he ran over to help out his best friend. Once he reached Jim, he knelt to the ground to allow him to climb onto his back in order to reach the Soothscryer. Once he was high enough to see the inside of it, the inner machine started up, which left Jim with even less confidence than he had before. But seeing no other option, Jim reached towards the spinning teeth inside the Soothscyrer, and placed his hand in, only for the the mouth of the machine to chomp down onto his entire arm, trapping Jim in place.

"AHH!" Jim screamed in shock as he tried to pull his arm out, and slipped off of Toby's back in his panicking and accidently kicked him in the face a few times in his attempts to get back onto his back. But then the Soothscryer spat Jim's arm back out, making him land on Toby.

"I'm okay!" the Trollhunter exclaimed when he saw that his arm was still attached to his body, and sighed in relief.

"Oh, everything hurts!" Toby groaned in pain while Jim readjusted himself so he and Toby could look up at Vendel as he reviewed the Soothscryer's judgment. "Well? What it is it?" the rounded boy questioned excitedly.

"Hmm... Inconclusive." Vendel revealed, much to the group's disbelief.

"Inconclusive? Pfft, not doing that again." Toby exclaimed as he tried to get up from the ground. But with Jim still on top of him, it didn't make it easy.

"Wait, wait, wait. What does inconclusive mean?" Jim asked, hoping to get some clarification.

"It means, Trollhunter, that there's never been a human to bear the mantle before. The Soothscryer needs more time to render its judgment! Let us all hope you live long enough to see." Vendel revealed as he left the Hero's Forge, leaving the group to digest his words.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the... interesting events that happened in Trollmarket, Jim and Toby left after seeing that Bular had given up on trying to get them, and walked their bikes home.

"Ugh, what have I gotten myself into?" Jim rhetorically asked Toby as they walked home.

"Um, Trolls? A cool underground city? Indigenous gem forms? Heartstone? What you've gotten yourself into is total awesome mania, man! Not even Marinette's hero deal can touch this!" Toby gushed in excitement, happy with how their lives were changing.

"If I survive!" Jim argued, seeing the negatives of his new responsibilities.

"Come on! You're gonna get trained by the best! Blinky is-" Toby began, trying to encourage Jim to see things weren't as bad as he thought they were.

"His last guy got torn limb from limb! ON HIS FIRST NIGHT!!" Jim exclaimed, interrupting Toby's encouragement, and leaving the both of them speechless for a good 10 seconds.

"So there's nowhere to go but up!" Toby finally responded, still choosing to see the glass half full in this situation. But his cheerfulness was interrupted when he saw... "Oh no, looks like your mom's home," the rounded boy exclaimed when he saw Barbara's car in the driveway.

"Okay quick! I was bikejacked by three...no, make it seven, members of the Bratva, that's the Russian mob, and then you broke into their hide-out to try to save me and...," Toby began, trying to come up with a good cover story for Jim to explain why he was out so late during a school night.

"OR, I could tell her your bike got hit by a car, but you're totally fine." Jim interrupted, offering a more simple and more believable story for him to use.

"Eh, that works too I guess." Toby relented, seeing how that made more sense than his excuse.

"Night Tobes." Jim farewelled as he and Toby parted ways, heading to their respective homes.
