Operation Superhero

Why? Why (Y/N)?

Tears ran down Adrian's cheeks as he stared at the girl who had captured his heart -- the girl he thought he could trust.

Emotions flooded his body -- a mixture of confusion, denial, anger, and betrayal.

Located in Orléans, France was the main headquarters of the France Intelligence Agency or FIA for short. There are four other locations of the FIA, those being the north, south, east, and west locations. The main location was the country's central location.

The FIA was a government agency responsible for gathering information on the events and occurrences in France and determining if these instances were a threat to the country, whether economically, socially, legally, etc. The agents, or employees, of the FIA were often spies within their own walls -- gathering information and intel from their fellow countrymen and making arrests as needed. Because of this rigorous process, domestic terrorism has not been publically a problem since the 19th century.

Perhaps the most talked about case, however, is a recent case involving the random appearance of a supervillain and two superheroes in Paris, the country's capital. Because it was so interesting, the news of it traveled fast so it wasn't long before the FIA decided to make a case out of it.

Why did this supervillain suddenly appear in a country and society that has no heroes or villains to speak of? And who is it?

How did two superheroes coincidentally appear at the same time as the villain? Who are they?

Theoretically, a superhero's main and only goal is to defeat supervillains in order to keep people safe. Prior to this incident, France did not have such a justice system. Instead, it was just regular criminals and the police. So, what will the superheroes do once their villain is defeated?

Are these heroes like the ones in the United States that have magical abilities?

To be honest, France would rather not deal with magic. It would definitely create a shift in order as people would crave this type of power and use it for their own selfish needs. We are only human after all.

There were so many questions that needed to be answered via an investigation. The FIA could not let this unknown phenomenon run amok in Paris without supervision. Therefore, they sent a team out to Paris to investigate.

Most of this team consisted of a family of six that worked extremely well together. The parents were a couple that rose through the ranks at the FIA rather quickly. Their four children were agents-in-training, having inherited the same natural-born skills, and worked under their parents. There were two other agents that would be apart of this investigation and responsible for apprehending any suspects when the time comes.

This investigation became known as Operation Superhero.

______________

It wasn't long after the team arrived and settled into their new, yet temporary, lives in Paris when they witnessed the superheroes in action. Surprisingly, the heroes were animal-themed -- a ladybug and a black cat.

They went by the names Ladybug and Chat Noir.

This duo did, indeed, use magical abilities, which was concerning. Now, a new portion of the investigation would have to go into uncovering the source of their power.

These heroes were put under surveillance, which allowed for the FIA agents to easily find out their civilian identities (that, and these "secret" heroes did not do the best job at transforming in private locations).

They were high schoolers Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrian Agreste.

No prior records for either one of them. Although, they had to ignore technical illegal activity that Marinette frequently did for the sake of the overall investigation.

They may consider arresting her later since they have video evidence from surveillance.

The agents discovered little creatures that stuck by their sides when they were in their civilian forms. These creatures were visible to the human eye but were not able to be viewed on camera or video.

Definitely magic.

Upon observation, these creatures seemed to enter a piece of jewelry and allow Marinette and Adrian to transform into their hero personas.

The true villain they faced called himself Hawkmoth. It would appear that Hawkmoth possessed the same source of power as the heroes. His power and/or ability seemed to be turning people into villains or, to put it another way, give power to people.

After three months of purely observation, the FIA gathered more information. A new villain named Mayura was revealed to be working with Hawkmoth. Then, out of nowhere, Hawkmoth evolved into Shadowmoth.

Not only this but the first time Hawkmoth appeared in public allowed the FIA to know his secret identity as well: famous fashion designer Gabriel Agreste.

From that point forward, he was put under surveillance too.

The heroes evolved as well -- to an extent. Ladybug would often visit, what she called, a guardian. She would then hand out pieces of jewelry to other civilians to fight along side her when needed. Then Ladybug became this "guardian" and began handing out magical charms.

The Miracle Queen incident was truly spectacular for the FIA because it filled so many of the missing pieces!

Thanks to Chloé, they know that there is a Miracle Box that stores the miraculous (i.e., the jewelry that holds the creature called a kwami that gives powers to humans).

Three months of observation of the events in Paris provided them with a lot of information, seeing as how someone appeared to be akumatized at least once a day. However, neither party seemed to hold the intelligence to defeat the enemy, so they were at a stalemate. All the while, the people of Paris were suffering when they didn't necessarily have to.

Initially, the FIA hoped that they could reveal themselves after the heroes defeated Hawkmoth to make the arrest; however, the two heroes were not making any progress -- not even to find out their enemy's secret identity. It was truly pitiful. With no progress on the hero side, they would have to destroy both sides from the inside.

While the heroes were helpful when an akuma appeared, they were not doing Paris any favors by not, at the very least, trying to figure out Hawkmoth's identity. They were just living their lives like normal teenagers when they are anything but that. The prolonged reign of Hawkmoth/Shadowmoth was partially the heroes fault as well.

And thus, some sort of punishment would need to take place for them.

Coincidentally, the Delémont family's eldest daughter was around the same age as Marinette and Adrian and would be in the same grade if she went to receive a public education. So, (Y/N) Delémont went undercover as a student of Françoise Dupont High School.

Because this was a government mission, the FIA was able to easily have her placed in Marinette and Adrian's class. It was time for the government to take things into their own hands.

Once they felt like they had sufficient information to build a case, the FIA team captured and arrested Marinette Dupain-Cheng, Adrian Agreste, and Gabriel Agreste.

All three suspects were sitting in large interrogation room, handcuffed to chairs. Of course, they were confused upon arrest -- Marinette panicked the entire ride -- but up until now they hadn't said a word.

"What is the meaning of this?" Gabriel hissed, breaking the silence. "I haven't committed any crime! Now release me. Is this how you all run an organization?"

The agent that was in charge of the interrogation said nothing. Instead, they walked up to each person and removed their miraculouses.

"Excuse me!" Gabriel snapped, moving and jerling on the handcuffs.

"Hey-" Adrian and Marinette gasped, not expecting the rough treatment.

The agent then looked over to the camera in the room and nodded their head. A moment later a young teenage girl entered the room, wheeling a cart that held Ladybug's Miracle Box. Marinette's, Adrian's, and Gabriel's eyes widened at the sight.

Then Adrian's eyes focused on who had entered the room. "(Y/N)?" He gasped. "What's going on?"

You did not reply at first. Instead, you held up the fox miraculous for Marinette to see. How did they-Marinette's thoughts were interrupted as you started talking.

"As you can probably guess by now," You spoke, keeping a neutral facial expression. "I work for the France Intelligence Agency. My family and I were tasked with investigating Paris's new superheroes and supervillain to determine if they were a threat to the country. That's why you are all here, Ladybug, Chat Noir, and Hawkmoth."

As you revealed their identities, there were no words for the amount of shock that was present on their faces. They were all stunned -- frozen in place -- with disbelief.

"Gabriel," You spoke, wasting no time and snapping the listeners out of their disbelief. "you're under arrest for obvious reasons."

"Wait," He pleaded, "you don't understand! I did this-"

"We know why you did it." You announced, cutting him off. "We've been watching you guys for months." As you said this, you glanced over to the other agent in the room. As if reading your mind, the agent turned on the large screen monitor in the room to reveal a video of Gabriel in his lair and surrounded by white butterflies.

Then the screen changed to Adrian transforming in his room before jumping out the window.

Then to Marinette transforming in an alleyway.

"If you know why, then you can understand-"

"Understand what?" You stopped Gabriel in his tracks, keeping your calm and neutral expression and demeanor. "I understand that you were willing to sacrifice an innocent life to revive your wife."

"Father!" Adrian gasped, shocked by more news on how much he really didn't know about his dad. The blond looked at his father, distraught.

"We all lose loved ones every day." You continued to share your point, "Don't you think it's selfish that you went through all of this to do something that no one else has access to? What about the rest of us? You should learn to suffer through grief like the rest of us, Gabriel Agreste."

After confronting Gabriel, who had mixture of rage and shame on his face, you locked eyes with Marinette who was already staring at you with intensity.

"Do you have a question, Marinette?" You asked.

"If you're punishing wrongdoers, then why are we here." She asked, referring to herself and Adrian.

"You and Adrian are just as bad as Gabriel." You stated in a matter-of-fact manner.

"Wha-" Marinette scoffed, "What are you talking about? We've saved Paris countless times!"

"Yes, you have. No doubt you both had good intentions the entire time. However, it has been almost a year since the arrival of Hawkmoth and you both made zero progress on discovering his identity and truly saving Paris. Did you expect the people of Paris to suffer daily until you felt like figuring it out? You were both doing more harm than good."

"N-No, that's not-" Marinette looked down at her lap, hit with a daunting realization.

"W-We did our best." Adrian spoke up after being silent for some time. His brain was trying to handle shock after shock that he had little mental capacity to speak. Now, he had to face one of his shocks and that was you interrogating him on his actions as a superhero. "We're still high school students after all. We have our own lives and you know that too."

"Can you imagine how I, as a regular citizen, would feel if I found out that the villain could have been defeated sooner?" You proposed, "I have been taken advantage of for months by Hawkmoth, afraid of feeling any strong emotions in fear of being akumatized and hurting my friends and family, but Ladybug and Chat Noir could have defeated him months ago if only they made an effort to find out who was behind the mask. You were given a huge responsibility and, while you had good intentions, you ultimately fell short of truly protecting Paris. Therefore, the FIA has decided to strip you of your miraculouses as punishment."

"What?" Adrian gasped.

"No, you can't do that!" Marinette shouted.

"We already did." You replied, gesturing to the other agent who now stood by the Miracle Box. "These magic items will be locked away. No one should have access to them for the good of humanity."

"NO!" Marinette shouted again, tugging on the handcuffs. "TIKKI!" Tears formed in her blue eyes as she realized she was helpless. The power that was given to her was suddenly stripped away from her. The kwami she had grown to love and care for was gone. "No, please don't." She pleaded, "I'll do better, I promise." She lowered her head as her strength left her and you're pretty sure the tears fell.

"(Y/N)." You heard your name being called. You looked over at Adrian who was looking at you -- his green eyes glossed with fresh tears. He was also upset about losing Plagg out of the blue. You made valid points -- he can't deny that -- but he was also angry.

He was angry at you.

He was angry at his father.

He was angry with the France Intelligence Agency.

He was angry at himself for not doing more.

"Was any of it real?" He asked, never taking his eyes off you. Did you really care for him? Or were you only getting close to him for the investigation? He had to know. That was the one thing that was eating him from the inside. He fell in love with you, so if you really just used him then he would really be devastated. You had been the first person to accept him -- all of him.

You loved the "perfect" model Adrian.

And you loved the silly Chat Noir version of Adrian.

Or, at least, he thought you did.

You allowed yourself to show your emotions to him, your gaze softening from the hard stare you initially had. Of course, at first you didn't expect to develop feelings for him. However, you did as you spent more time with him. He was a boy with a tragic childhood and backstory. He needed someone who cared by his side. You also had the advantage of knowing he was Chat Noir, so you indulged his goofy side which made for fun and entertaining moments. You were amazed that someone like Adrian who had been through what he has been through could still be so kind to others.

He was wearing a mask to hide how lonely he really was. Your heart went out to him. You really were just trying to be nice, but your heart had other plans.

"I promise you that everything was real." You said, "Of course, I never expected to start liking you but I did. Regardless of my feelings, I still have to do my job which requires me to think with my head and not my heart. I hope you can understand."

Adrian bit his lip as his tears fell. He was even angrier now after he heard your answer. What was he supposed to do now? He was conflicted about whether he should forgive you for betraying him. You didn't necessarily have an ill intentions toward him. When he thought about it, you were acting in the best interest of the general population. But, even so, he needed time because you shattered his family as he knew it.

His mother is still dead as far as he knew.

His father would spend, who knows how long, in prison.

He was an orphan without a family.

He could stay with his aunt, but his cousin Felix rubbed him the wrong way.

What was going to happen to him now?

Soon, your parents entered the room to formally arrest Gabriel Agreste and remove him from interrogation.

Your younger sister, by one year, came to take a distraught and upset Marinette back to her parents.

Your younger twin brothers, by two years, came to escort Adrian to the Department of Family and Child Services to figure out how he would spend the remainder of his teenage years.

He pleaded with the staff that he wanted to remain in Paris with his friends and go to Françoise Dupont High School until he graduated. That ruled out his extended family.

They were willing to allow Adrian to stay in Paris after finding a suitable foster home for him. It was actually a good foster home. He received love, care, and attention from his foster parents that he didn't receive from his father.

It was a truly beautiful experience.

In a sense, he started to heal as did Marinette. They slowly started to get used to their lives without magical creatures and jewelry despite how much they missed their kwamis. Adrian, however, struggled with coping with you and his father. Every time he thought about it, his heart hurt.

Can he ever face his father again?

How will he know when he's ready to forgive you -- if ever?

How long should he wait?

If he doesn't get over this, will he ever fall in love again?

Can he trust someone else with his heart again?

He doesn't know the answers now, but with given time he just might.
