Chapter 18

The day after Hannah's big revelation, Allen started making phone calls and doing research on Bing. There were many places he had heard of in different states and in Texas proper. But there was also the matter of 'how much'. He knew Hannah couldn't afford nor wanted something super luxurious that cost an arm and a leg. The whole point was to find a place that would fit Hannah perfectly. Like with the different drugs and addiction as a whole, the addicts themselves were all of different mind, body, and spirit and therefore it was important to find a rehab place that suited each person's needs as much as their wants. On top of that, there were both inpatient and outpatient programs; it was the former that he needed to find for Hannah.

It was midweek before he found the program that he knew would be perfect for Hannah. It was exactly what the doctor ordered and as if sent from her guardian angels themselves. Turned out that St. Bernadette's was involved in a 3 month inpatient program; located on the outskirts of Fort Worth. The building was in a private sector and owned its own park; that way the patients could enjoy the outdoors and nature without the prying eyes of others and tourists.

He called St. Bernadette's and asked to speak with the Mother Superior. When he told her who he was and who he was calling on behalf of, she arranged a meeting with him as soon as possible. 2 days later, he drove to the parish and sat down in her office. The Mother Superior was shorter then Allen but her air of authority and honor made her feel and seem 10 feet tall. They started to compare notes. She didn't know much about what had happened to Hannah other than the fact that she was extremely ill with a non-curable disease. It was then that Allen told her about everything that had happened with Hannah since the death of Sister Grace.

The Mother Superior was truly taken aback. She hadn't known about Hannah's cheating husband or her meth addiction. Allen went step by step telling her the last two years of Hannah's life; the bad, the ugly, and the horrific. She didn't know how bad Hannah's M.E. was and what it had done to her. Hannah had come to St. Bernadette's at the age of 5 and that is when she met her. Though not as close to her as Sister Grace was; the Mother Superior felt like Hannah was the parish's child. They all were mothers to her and she was their daughter. She had made them so proud over the years and to see her fall so far and hurt so much was very painful.

After listening to everything that Allen had to say, she jotted down some notes knowing she had a lot of phone calls to make. She told Allen that she would be in touch by the end of that week. He left feeling satisfied that they were getting somewhere in finding Hannah the help she so desperately needed. True to her word, she called Allen while he was at the office. He picked up the phone on the second ring as soon as he saw St. Bernadette's number on his caller ID.

"Agent Roberts, I have made the necessary phone calls and we will foot the bill for the 90 day program for Hannah." Allen listened stunned.

"Wow, really? Are you sure it won't be too much trouble for you? If it's really pricey, we'll look elsewhere."

"No, not at all. It isn't pricey for us at all. We very seldom send our own to rehab especially children that grew up in the school and church who were orphaned. Hannah is family to St. Bernadette's. It only makes sense for us to help her out. Besides, it was in her parent's Will that we take care of her even into adulthood if need be. And that we shall. She considered Sister Grace her surrogate mother so it is the very least we could do." The Mother Superior said quietly.

"Hannah will be so pleased. Thank you so much, Mother Superior for everything." Allen said gratefully as the latter smiled on the other end of the line.

"It is time for Hannah to get her life back, don't you think?"

"Yes, I agree."

"One small step at a time. And with love and caring such as you have been giving her, I think she'll make it through this next difficult period in her life."

"She's made it this far. I will be there every step of the way." Allen said strongly.

"You're in love with her, aren't you, Agent Roberts?" There was silence on Allen's end.

"Is it that obvious?" He asked quietly as she smiled again.

"Yes and love is a very powerful tool that one going through such hardships needs as much as fresh air."

"That's very profound and so true." Allen said thoughtfully.

"It is. Now, please bring Hannah to the Hope to Heal Rehabilitation Center on Monday with all of her things and we'll get her situated."

"I will do that. I'll let Hannah know as soon as I get home. Thank you so much again."

After the Mother Superior gave Allen the directions and address of the rehab center, they hung up. She was glad Hannah had decided on getting help because it was obvious that she desperately needed it and this was the perfect location for her to go. Sister Grace was one of the founding members of the rehab center and was on the board up until her death. When she went into the chapel to pray, she asked for Sister Grace to watch over Hannah when she came to the center. It was truly kismet.

When Allen got home, he told Hannah all about his meeting with the Mother Superior and what had been decided. Hannah was shocked and honored that the parish would foot the bill for her entire stay. She knew it wasn't cheap though it wasn't a really expensive place that she had heard of before either. That weekend, she and Allen spent most of their time together and laundering all of Hannah's clothing. They even went to a pharmacy and clothing store so she could pick up any toiletries and more comfortable clothing that she could have to take along with her. After all, she would need more than she had brought to Allen's for the three month stay at the Hope to Heal Center.

Sunday night, they spent the evening in bed in each other's arms just talking about what the next three months would be like. Hannah knew that it was going to be brutally hard on her emotionally and mentally but she was ready for it. She needed to kick this habit for good so she wouldn't have any more crazy weird withdrawal symptoms. On early Monday morning, Allen drove her to Fort Worth and to the Hope to Heal Center. She was ready.

She was stunned to see the Mother Superior herself waiting for her outside of the building; that woman never changed. As Hannah and Allen got out of his car and he brought her suitcase forward, the elder woman reached out to Hannah with both arms:

"Welcome Hannah. Sister Grace would be so proud of you for getting the help you need and seek."

Those words were all that it took for Hannah to stumble into the waiting arms and begin to cry. Her sobs were loud and her shoulders heaved as she let out a squeal of pain at the thought of her beloved Sister Grace. The Mother Superior folded her into her arms and a very tight and motherly embrace as Allen watched with tears in his own eyes. When Hannah's sobs subsided, the three of them walked into the main building and the newcomers looked around. There were counselors waiting for them; 3 women and 1 man. They looked like regular civilians though the building did have a statue of the Virgin Mary outside and a cross made out of stone on top, the rest of the center was very non-denominative.

The counselors showed Hannah the room that she would be staying in and sharing with another woman. Though the place was co-ed, the rooms were shared with the same sex. The last thing they needed was people with sex addictions getting together in their rooms at night. Allen watched as they searched through Hannah's belongings for any drug paraphernalia or sharp objects and having found none, stepped out so that she and Allen could say their goodbyes to one another.

Hannah decided to give her cellphone to Allen for safe keeping. They would have to give those up anyways but she just didn't want it around. The only people she would ever feel like calling was him and the Mother Superior and both of their numbers she knew by heart. They had a phone that people could use about once a week or more frequently if there was an emergency and that would be the best way for them to communicate with one another.

When it was finally time for Allen to leave, she walked him to the front hallway and they stood there just staring into each other's eyes, memorizing each feature. Allen couldn't imagine his apartment without her in it anymore. Then he leaned down and kissed her with all of the passion and promises that they had made to one another. They hugged each other tightly like two marooned sailors clinging to a life raft out in a storm tossed and unforgiving sea. The others around them looked away discreetly, giving them their time.

Then with a last promise to speak soon and a wave, Allen left Hannah and walked to his car, filled with hope for the future. They both knew that this wasn't the end of them, but just the beginning. This was just a detour she had to take in order to get to a higher path and find peace within her life. With a deep breath, she followed the others back towards her room and the next leg of her journey.
