[1] 3: One Fateful Night

Mal's heart was leaping with excitement, as not only is he living in Remnant of all places, but with the Xiao Long-Rose home of all things. What were the chances of that? None! Lucky for him that most of his emotions have been singed off by the flames, or else he'd break his poker face and react similarly to a certain Ruby Rose.

Mal then thinks about it. On one hand, he could try and survive alone, but that meant he wouldn't trouble them with his presence, but that would force him into poverty, something he cannot afford if he wants to be a hero when he grew up. On the other, if he troubled these people now, then he could not only poooooossibly go back home, but if he did, he could possibly even BE a hero for however long he has on this world.

He then looks up at Tai and, with fire in his eyes, or at least he imagines there being fire there, then says "I accept." with almost as much vigor in his voice as when he screamed to distract the ursa.

During the following days, he spent the time acquainting himself with the Xiao Long-Rose family and the world he was in. His original response from the two was a bit iffy with Ruby being terrified of the prospect of aliens due to a movie she once watched and Yang, well Yang was actually sort of chill.

Now, as to what Mal chose from the two choices he presented himself with, well it may sound like he chose the second option, but surprisingly, he actually chose a compromise. Since he didn't want to inconvenience them more than he thought he probably did, he volunteered to help Tai in so many of the chores, that Tai actually ran out of chores to do.

Eventually, Yang even started doting on him like a younger brother she never had. That and his cooking... He was no Soma Yukihira, but he could still whip up a meal that could even impress even the likes of Gordon Ramsey.

Another one of the things Mal did, was train. If he was planning to be a huntsman, or at least an unofficial one, then he might as well train.

One day Tai found out about his whole training, and, due to the boy having already hogged and finished most of the chores decides to train him as an unofficial pupil.

Unlike most of his pupils, Mal SUCKED. Up until then, the only fighting knowledge he had was from the few animes he had. This was also not helped by his physique being so lanky, he might as well be Steve Rogers before the serum. However, just like Steve, he had one thing going for him. He just doesn't know when to quit. So he pushed himself through the harsh training given to him.

Ruby also found out and so offered to help him create a weapon. After all, she felt indebted from all the darn strawberry and choco chip short cakes she made him create in that week alone. That and weapons were like her obsession, so an excuse to make a weapon is an excuse she wasn't going to pass up.

They eventually settled on a white round shield with a sun emblem on the middle for a weapon. Ruby then kept bugging him, telling him "It also needs to be a gun!" Eventually, he relented and settled for a revolver dust spray in the middle that functions very much like a flame thrower of dust with the shield's handle functioning as the trigger as well.

One of the other things he learned was that he he produced aura at astonishing speeds, however, with that, came the debilitating weakness of his aura being of so low capacity, it conoletely shattered under two of Yang's strikes when distributed throughout his body and so trained to focus it on his shield, which sadly could hold his aura better. If what he had was even aura to begin with.

Eventually, Ruby decided to tour her "bro" in the city because he needes exposure. Tooootally not because she was being cooped up in her home and was feeling unheard of levels of bored. Tooooootally.

And that's where we are in the present. Ruby is currently reading a magazine within a shop named "From Dawn till Dusk." while waiting for Mal to finish peeing. Suddenly, a bunch of men in black tuxedoes came in, with their red swords and black guns. Unknown to either of them, the shop they are in is currently being robbed.

One of the men then comes up to Ruby and says "Hands up where I can see em!"

He recieves no response from Ruby still rocking out to whatever was on the radio.

He then shouts again, "Hands where I can see them!" and yet, again, no response. He then shouts out, "Do you have a death wish or something?"

Infuriated, the man then pulls her cloak down, surprising Ruby. Then the man gestures for her to lower the headphones. She complies and then asks "May I help you?"

The man then reiterates one more time, "Hands where I can see em girly!"

Ruby raises an eyebrow in intrigue before saying "Are you robbing me?"

The man then points his gun at her, and exasperatedly says "What do you think?!"

Ruby, to the man's surprise, then smirks before saying "Ooooooh.... Okay."

She then grabs the chair with both arms before launching a kick to his jaw, uppercutting the man. With the momentum, she then swings to the back of the chair, before shifting Crescent Rose to gun form and rocket jumping into the man like a red bullet while saying "HIIIYAAAAAH!!"

Mal, after hearing the gunshot, widens his eyes. He then bursts out of the C. R. after quickly donning his pants. He then gets out while holding a shield and letting his light gray cloak flow free. He then walks to the front, only to see an oranged hair man, with a fancy fedora and a white tuxedo, order his presumed underlings to attack Ruby. Yet another memory triggers and sees that Ruby actually beats the men. But due to their distraction, the man in white escapes. His name was Roman Torchwick. Knowing this, Mal then charges Tocrchwick from behind, making both him and his target fall out into the road.

Roman growls out "What the hell?!" as he sees Mal in a boxing stance, holding his shield. While Ruby fought the henchmen, Mal took on Torchwick.

However, despite Mal being taught by the likes of Tai, it became clear that Roman's superior technique born from experience managed to completely overwhelm the much shorter lad. That and his longer arms...

Mal is then blown into a wall by a point blank flare shot. Luckily his aura, as flimsy as it may have been, held together and allowed him to stand up. He then goes back into the boxing stance and says "I can do this all day." with a ragged voice. He then charges again, only this time, he then hears the whizzing of an arrow.

He then looked to the distance and saw a mysterious figure wearing what seemed like a red hood. He couldn't tell who from how far but he can just about see the figure draw a bow and aim at him.

He then quickly raised his shield as a volley of fifteen arrows bore down on his shield like a jackhammer. He was then sent tumbling. When he looked at the arrow that lodged itself into the nearby wooden wall, they seemed odd. Their tips... They almost seem like... daggers.

Mal then quickly looked back to the mystery sniper only for them to have disappeared. He then ran his aura around the projectiles porcupined on his shield to analyze the sword arrow and, indeed, these truly were swords deformed into arrows. He also detected a strange foreign energy around it. As to what it was, he doesn't know. But it felt... familiar... Sinilar to aura but not quite.

Welp, no use worrying now. He then waited for a second barrage to finish, noting the terrifying fact that the arrows were slowly piercing through his shield.

When the arrow barrage ended, Mal quickly peeked out to see that Torchwick was nowhere near him and was on top of the roof already.

He then looked down at Ruby and Mal and said "You two truly were worth every cent. Well, it's been fun little red and littler white."

Mal then stood up, with his eyes twitching. Very few insults could truly hurt him. However, Torchwick just happens to have picked the one that did.

"Don't."

He then started running towards Torchwick in sheer rage.

"Call me."

Mal then switched the shield to ice setting before pointing it to the floor.

"SHHOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRTTT!!!!"

Mal then clicked the trigger, creating a giant tower of ice by using up all the ice in his shield to launch upwards. He then used the ice tower to jump towards Torchwick to shield tackle him, only for Torchwick to side step, making his shield crash into the roofing.

Torchwick then looked down only to see Ruby zipping up as well. He then mutters out "Persistent." before running off. When Ruby got up the building, she first checked on Mal who gives her a thumbs up while mumbling "Headache..."

She then looked up only to hear a large engine noise and see a bullhead hovering behind Roman, as he went in. He then takes out a red dust crystal.

"This is the end of the line... For both of you." He then chuckes it at Ruby, then fired at it with a cane flare simultaeneously.

However, instead of seeing a burnt Ruby, he instead sees a purple energy shield in front of Ruby and beside her was a blonde middle aged woman using a magic wand of sorts.

Roman panicked before saying "We've got a huntress!"

A woman piloting the craft then switched with Roman to battle it out with the huntress.

The woman's visage was covered in shadows and the only thing one could see was her piercing, fiery gaze and crimson red dress. Parts of her red dress then started glowing yellow, as if it got set ablaze, to which she then fires a fireball at them. The huntress and the mystery woman then battled it out with Ruby and Mal supporting the huntress by trying to give suppress fire with her Crescent Rose and his shield, he named, Sol.

Mal then stands up after recovering. In a single, STUPID act of bravery, he then tries to pull off a Captain America at the woman who merely blasts it away with a fireball.

The woman then found a slip up in the huntress's defence. She then sent in a barrage of fireball, only for two of the fireballs to seemingly miss. However, these then rebound from behind the huntress and towards her back. Mal sees it as well and, against the common sense most people had, runs towards it. Hoping for a miracle, he then swung his hand at it, focusing all the aura-like energy to his hand. However... What happened instead was...

[Activate that ability again. Create a barrier between the danger and my allies... A metal cricket bat MAYBE-I DON'T KNOW.]

"Switch..."

[It's material should be steel and it's shape that of a sword.]

"On..."

Energy thrums within Mal once more as a sword materialized out of nowhere, and appeared in his hand. He swung it with all he had on his one arm, batting away the fireballs which detonated in the sky in a cascading inferno.

However, the impact was so powerful that he shattered not only his aura but his wrist and arm joints almost bent in an unnatural way.

Everyone then looked at Mal in surprise with Torchwick whisper shouting "Is that kid crazy?!"

The huntress then looked back to her opponent and fires a barrage of concrete stalagmites at the woman only for her to release a fiery omnidirectional explosive force which disintegrated the rocks. After it died down, the criminals disappear.

Ruby then ran to Mal and shouted "Are you okay?!" to which he nodded, trying to not look like he was about to vomit from the pain.

The huntress then said "You two, you're coming with me. I have a first aid kit."

An hour later, both of them sat in an interrogation room while the huntress paced around them. She then said "I hope you two realize your actions tonight will not be taken lightly. You put yourselves and others in great danger."

Ruby reflexively said "They started it!" with Mal joining, saying "I do not regret it." The woman then turned towards them and says "While you young lady, I could just send you back with a pat to the back."

Ruby's eyes brightened, only for the woman's expression to sour as she continued, saying "And a slap to wrist of course!" as she slapped the table near the wrist as an example making Ruby withdraw her hand.

However, the huntress wasn't finished. She then looked at Mal and continued, saying "You young man, I cannot say the same thing. While your ally here may have observed caution while fighting. You just charged in reckless abandon, and threw yourself at the projectile, which mind you, turned concrete into powder. Do you WANT to die?"

Mal then looked at her, his gaze as steady as ever, and said "Hey it worked out, right? I was able to make the blade in time. It all worked out."

"But what if it didn't?"

"Then at least you guys didn't die."

Glynda Goodwitch, the huntress scolding them, then went silent, slightly unnerved at the boy's almost complete lack of self preservation. She then cleared her throat before saying "Putting this matter temporarily aside... Someone wants to see both of you."

A voice then came from behind a door, saying "You two sure know how to make an entrance."

Out came a man with white hair, holding a plate of cookies and his mug. He then puts the cookie aside, and says "Ruby Rose, Michael Espiña... You both of silver eyes." while observing closely. Mal's eyes seem to widen while Ruby just became confused and uncomfortable.

He then looked at Mal closely, both staring at each other with a poker face. The man then said "Actually, your's seem more akin to a steel gray. Nevermind, what I said earlier."

The man then pulled out a scroll and said"So, where did you learn how to fight like this?"

Ruby stuttered out "S-signal academy!" followed by Mal, who then said "Her dad." with non chalance.

The man nodded and then said "Putting your part aside for now Michael, Ruby, you mean to tell me that Signal Academy taught you to wield such a deadly weapon?"

Ruby replied, saying "Well... One teacher in particular actually."

Mal, then stood up and bowed before asking "I'm sorry to interrupt, but where's the restroom?"

Glynda pointed off to the distance while telling him the directions. He nodded and then walked out as canon events happen.

When he returned, all he heared is Ruby squealing. When he opened the door, Ozpin then said "Ms. Rose, would it be okay if you could please go out for now? There is something I would like to discuss with Mr. Espiña for a while."

Ruby happily nodded before going to the door. She then loomed above Mal and said "Don't stay up too long..." before looking at the shorter boy teasingly, saying "lil' bro" making Mal glare at her before returning to his seat. He then gave the man a guarded look.

The man then took out a folder with documents inside and then sat down in front of him. The man then said "Based on your reaction towards me, I trust that you know who I am Mr. Espina?"

Mal nodded with narrowed eyes, saying "Professor Ozpin, is it?"

Ozpin then nodded and said"I'll get straight to it. Michael Espiña, based on the DNA test mr. Xiao Long sent out, you don't exist. Almost like your claim of suddenly appearing here is true."

Mal stood up from his chair with a shocked look and was about to ask Ozpin how, but the man predicted him and says "Before you ask how, surely Tai told you at least once that he was a student of my school, yes? So it shouldn't come as a surprise that I should know."

Mal then calmed down. Ozpin then held out a folder filled with legal documents and said "However, I have a proposition for you. But before that, I would like to ask. What is it really that you want to do?"

Mal looked at the headmaster with an unflinching gaze and said "I want to save everyone."

Ozpin smiled and replied "That is good to hear at the very least. So now the same big question I gave dear Ruby will be given to you. Would you want to join my school of huntsmen? It's a big decision, but if-"

"I accept. If I am to help as many as I can possibly help, the least I can do is not break the law."

Ozpin continues to smile before opening the folder. He then says "Since you technically have no guardian and you are a minor, I would need a signature from your current guardian, Tai Yang Xiao Long, on this matter, as well as of your own should anything happen. Don't worry, this is merely standard operations, just in case something untowards, happens to you. Another thing, how do you feel about the Xiao Long household? I ask you this so that I can record you as one of their own since it would be illegal to enroll a minor without the consent of a guardian or parent figure."

Mal's determined gaze was then replaced by a more neutral one, as he says "It's up to them really. I mean, I like it with them, but I don't know how they would feel."

After a bit of paperwork, Ozpin allowed him to leave. While on his way to Ruby, he then saw a familiar lock of white hair walking along the streets. He hid behind a wall and observed the individual.

She answered a call on her phone, and, with a frustrated voice, said "What is it father? Mhm, mhm, yeah..."

She then argued with whoever was on the other side of the scroll before huffing and closing it. However, her troubles only gets worse as the noise she created attracted unwanted attention.

A group of hooligans and ruffians then surrounded her, making her wearily pull out her rapier, as their leader, a woman in a red biker outfit, with red hair then came along and said "Who do we have here? Boys? Anyone?"

A buff man with a handlebar mustache then cocked a shotgun, saying "A Schnee that's what! Hehehehehe."

Another one then said "And no bodyguard to boot! How much do you think we'd get from hers?"

Before the ring leader could answer, Mal interrupted and said "None!" as he walked out of cover still clutching to the slightly damaged sword from earlier.

"Who said that!"

All eyes then fell on Mal as he put up his sword and his shield. One of the men then snickers, saying "Oh look, a little boy pretending to be a knight in shining armor. Cute."

The woman licked her lips before saying "After we're done securing the Schnee, I say we have fun with the little boy pretending to be a hero."

Mal gritted his teeth as he then chanted "Switch... On!", reinforcing the sword so it wouldn't break. He then charged at them, before pointing his shield downwards, and firing the wind dust downwards, rocket jumping himself upwards and into the middle of the battlefield.

He then stood beside the Schnee who, with annoyed voice then said to him that "I could take care of myself!" to which he smirked and said "I'm just here to make sure of that. You wouldn't want to get hurt before school starts right?"

Both then took on battle stances as Mal then said, "You attack, I defend." She then gawked at him and said "Don't tell me what to do!" She then rushed off, leaving Mal to fend for himself, unable to voice a complaint due to the suddenness of her action.

She then charged into the midst of the battle and used glyphs to blitz around the enemies with her rapier, all the while using various glyph types to disrupt the bad guys.

Mal, seeing as how she had handled the fodder enemies, directed his gaze towards their leader, the red head and her two personal guards. As Mal ran towards her, she yawned then pointed her pistol at him and said "Boys, beat him up for me please? Then bring em both to me when you're done."

Mal, with his sword and shield then charged at the thugs who had crowbar shotguns. The first thug took the initiative and fired a shot at Mal only for him to block the shot with his shield. He then smacked the gun away and parried the crowbar strike of the other guy. Mal then went on to parry and block strikes, being given too little of a window of time to do any counterattacks.

Weiss, the white haired girl, then saw how Mal was already at the big bad and felt frustrated why she was the one being forced to face the weaker baddies. So after knocking out another one, she then started forming a glyph to sling herself at the woman only to be knocked off by a surviving thug.

Simultaeneously, Mal also struggled in his fight, slowly getting overwhelmed by the joint attack of the two biker thugs with shotgun crowbars. He then got grappled by one as their leader then gestures to have Mal be handed over to her.

Suddenly, Mal screamed making a powerful gust of wind and faint light explodes out of him, confusing the man holding him.

Glynda Goodwitch then crossed her arms and said "Strange, I thought for sure his semblance was sword creation." to which Ozpin shook his head.

"Who knows Glynda, not everyone's semblance is clear cut after all. Take Ms. Xiao Long's for example, to the naked eye, her semblance is a strength boost based on the intensity of her anger. However, that is not completely true. Is it?"

Ms. Goodwitch then goes silent as Ozpin smiles knowingly. After a bit of seeing the fight, she then speaks up once more.

"But sir. Shouldn't we help?"

"No, no, think of this as a sort of... assessment. Remember, our eyes were mostly on Ruby last time, so against these opponents, let us see how young Michael will react shall we?"

Mal then headbutted the thug, allowing to slide down. He then swung his shield into the guy's face, giving him a concussion, before aiming a punch into his abdomen.

The man gasped out, not because the punch to the abdomen was strong, but rather, because Mal missed and struck the man in the family jewels instead.

The other man then ran to the guy's aid and shouted "You bastard!" to Mal. Mal then bowed his head and said "I'm so sorry. Please get him to a clinic." Mal then walks towards the woman who then puts up a pair of dual pistol karambits.

"Get closer, I dare you!"

Weiss then launched at her out of nowhere and tackled her to the ground before front flipping and landing on her feet. She then looked at Mal with a cold expression, saying "I am the one they tried to ransom with, not you. Therefore I should be the one to pay them back. Not. You."

Mal, not really minding as long as noone died then shrugs, saying "Sure, fine by me. As long as noone dies."

Suddenly, Mal's eyes widen as he charged towards Weiss with his shield raised. Instinctively, Weiss raises her sword to face Mal, thinking he was jealous or something. As Mal runs towards her, she then slashes him, shattering his aura, making him gasp in pain, before pushing through.

Weiss looks at the boy in bewilderment as he powered through her strike and... swings... past... her? She doesn't even have the time to react as the boy hacks out blood while being blown back. When she recovered her senses, she then realizes an arrow stuck to his collarbone. Someone must've tried shooting her and he blocked it... She then looks in horror as Mal smiles like he was ready to die, only for blood to gush out of the wound putting him into a coughing fit.

Within Mal's mind he thought 'My vision is slowly blackening... just a few months since being reincarnated and I'm already going to die. Well... At least I saved someone anyways. I have no regrets...'

He then looked up at a stupefied Weiss, whose figure was bathed by the broken moon's light from behind as he then utters out "Sa...ber..." He then blacks out completely... as the red headed woman from earlier slumped down in horror as yet another arrow struck slightly into her ear, drawing blood.

I accidentally wrote this chapter too long but I don't regret it.
