Chapter One
I woke up to a bright sunny morning. The sun sent rays or gold stabbing through my windows and lighting up my room. "Monday fifteenth of October, great!" I moaned quietly under my sheets. Every Monday Sam, ( 12 yr old brother ) Erica, ( 13 yr old sister ) Caleb, ( 8 yr old brother ) mum, dad and I collect all the horse manure from our paddocks. To get rid of it mum uses it as a fertiliser for our rose bush and vegetable garden. Not only does this make the fields look neat and tidy, it prevents our four rescue horses from getting sick from the germs.
I've been in love with horses ever since we began helping Mary, a horse rescuer re-home some of her abused horses. At the moment we have four of her horses on our eighteen acre farm, River Stone Ranch in Napier. ( New Zealand ) these horses are called, Chester, a chestnut ex racehorse, Lucky, a show pony that was starved by her old owners, Sugar Foot, a black Shetland pony who's owners couldn't afford him, and last put not least, Madalian. His story is different, he was a famous show jumper. When a rider from the New Zealand Olympic team dropped out, Madalian's owner entered the competition to replace the former rider. Unfortunately Madalian suffered a severe leg injury right before the trails, meaning that he couldn't compete. This made his owner furious. For two years Madalian endured beatings to his head and electric shocks to his legs until a family friend couldn't bear his mistreatment and secretly brought him to Mary. Mary taught me every thing I know about horses, from different colours to training wild ones. She also tutored me while I bonded with Madalian and the other three.
I crawled arguably out of bed. I put on my dark blue dressing gown over my plain pink pyjamas and silently crept down stairs. I shrunk to the freezer, grabbed two pieces of bread and popped them in the toaster while I got the jam out. Right in the middle of my peaceful breakfast I heard Caleb yelling at the top of his booming voice. "Poop day!" Then he started laughing as though he had just said the funniest joke in the world! Unsurprisingly dad called after him. "Caleb go back to sleep, it's five in the morning!" But Caleb, stubborn as he is just had to reply.
"Alright daddy-do but where's Elisabeth?!"
"Probably sleeping."
"No she's not."
"Then she'll be checking her CV."
"Uh Dad you're being not fun!"
Caleb's thundering footsteps told me he stomped back to his room. I hear dad silently whispering. "Thank goodness!" Then my mind suddenly clicked to what dad meant about CV. In a spit second I was upstairs and pulling on a pair of black tights and a white flowery shirt. I was to excited to finish breakfast and dashed outside. The sun wasn't quite over Saddleback hill yet so i could only just make out the stable, "Ooh!" I gasped as our German Shepard dog Zeke gave me a good morning nudge. German Shepard's are my favourite dog breed, mainly because of their loyal nature but also because of their gorgeous black and gold colour. I power-walked down past the stable block and further to the paddocks where two best friends, Madalian and Chester were chasing each other playfully around the paddock. Although Madalian (16hands high) can be very overpowering to Chester, (15hands high) the two are bound together as if some invisible rope held them together. This confuses me because if I only take one for a ride, the other is completely fine! I climbed over the black wooden gate. Chester turned on his heels and began galloping full speed at Sugar Foot, he ran for his life! Well it looked that way. "Oh Chess your such a bully!" I giggled. As soon as the brothers-in-a-way heard my voice, they began trotting towards me nickering politely. I exposed a mint to each of them, when they had finished they licked my hands and sniffed my pockets for any more.
Now the sun ways spying on me, spreading warmth into crisp morning air, it's just light enough to make out the details of their soft fur. "Chester, Madalian you won't believe it! Mums talking me for my SPCA interview today! I hope they want me working with the horses! I get to miss paddock cleaning, oh isn't this just the best Monday ever! Don't you look at me like that Chester, of course I want your paddock nice and tidy!" I laughed as Chester pointed his head to the sky and curled up his top lip. I turned and walked away hoping the horses would follow... "Ouch, Chester you bit my, Maddy that was a carrot for..." To late. Madalian devoured the carrot that was for SugarFoot and Lucky. "Ha, typical Maddy." I sighed, enjoying the moment. "Elisabeth!" Mum called from the car beside the gate. "Gotta go now my dears." I whispered giving each one a sweet kiss on their soft velvety muzzels, saying a hearty goodbye i slipped into the silver Toyota car and smiled as Madalian and Chester galloped along the fence after me, but quickly dissapeared as the car zipped down the road.
