Chapter 21

Sweat foamed all over Survivors limp body as he lay between life and death on a bed on soft straw.

"We don't know if he'll recover." I heard Mike whispering to Lisa outside.
"But she loves him, she adopted him!"
"I know, and that's another thing, because Survivor is adopted she has to pay for the surgery, and any other medication."
"Can't you at least let her off just this once?"
"I've already looked into that, but if I don't get $5500 then I can't even pay for the use of the medical equipment!"
I shuffled through the straw until I was beside Survivors head. His face was slippery with sweat, but somehow I managed to lift his head onto my lap. "Come on boy! You have to live!" I whispered, trying but failing to hold back tears. Mike and Lisa's conversation tortured my brain. "I'll pay the fees!" I cried. They startled and leaned over the stall gate. "You have to live!" Beep boop beep boop. I had never noticed it before, but squatting on a stand, was a heart rate monitor. A tube ran down the stand and was taped to Survivors chest. If I held my breath, the only noise was its occasional beep. The time between each of Survivors heart beats was increasing. He was dying.

"MIKE!" I screamed. He instantly burst into the stall. His eyes fell upon the heart rate monitor. "Crap. No!" He muttered, whacking the computer-like screen. "That can't be right! It's only been five minutes since he was beating well!" Five minutes until death, I thought.
I clutched Survivors head tightly in my arms. "I CANT LOSE YOU! YOU BEAST! CAN YOU HEAR ME? I CANT LOSE YOU!" Mike descended on me. "Elizabeth you holding him to tight! Calm down..."
"NO!"
Using his brute strength, mike wrenched my hands away from Survivor. "Lisa!" Lisa, Rebecca and Anthony rushed in. I glimpsed the heart rate monitor, to my horror, there was no beat. "WHY DID I CALL YOU SURVIVOR YOU BEASTY!" I grabbed Survivor again, "he's dead!" Mike shouted, he ordered some command at the Lisa, Rebecca and Anthony but I couldn't hear anything anymore. The world seemed to be in slow motion. The only thing I could hear was the muffled voices of people. The only thing I could see was a ocean of blurry brown. Mike mumbled some thing at the other three. I felt a tugging at my arms and back. What are they doing?

"God save him!" I whispered.

My body flooded with fatigue. I released my grip on my beloved, yet life-less, Survivor.

For a moment, the world came back to normal. And for that one moment, as Lisa and the other two dragged me out of the stall, my eyes took one last glimpse at the heart rate monitor. The green line was still sleeping, but just before it was out of my sight, it revealed one, last, beep.
