Chapter 10

The next day I arrived early so that I would have extra time to work on No Name. ( I work at the SPCA five hours a day so really I was just to anxious about him to stay away! )

I didn't bring an apple for lunch because I don't want to treat him every day in fear of making him sick, so my lunch is something horses can't eat like a musli bar.

I was reaching out to open the Horse Section doors when Rebecca opened them from the other side. Beads of sweat rested on her forehead. "Your stallions in the round pen ready for training. Phew! He's real strong!" ( the round pen is another name for corral. ) She shock her head side to side and panted as she walked past with a smile on her face. I couldn't help but stare at her.

I strolled towards the round pen. I was halfway there when I stopped dead in my tracks. I heard a loud ambulance siren just seconds before four men carrying a stretcher ran into the yard. I ran after them. Next to the round pen was Anthony lying down on the ground moaning in pain. Lisa explained what had happened to the stretcher men. No Name had kicked him in his back.

After the stretcher men had taken him away I entered the round pen. I could feel Lisa gazing sadly at my stallion, yesterday she had made it pretty clear that she thought I would fail. She's not actually as mean as she seems, and she doesn't want to send No Name to slaughter but the SPCA can't bury all the horses that are put down.

"I better join up if he's going to cause anymore injuries." I thought in my head. I picked up a lead rope and calmly walked into the middle of the round pen. No Name was standing to my right, gazing at me with challenging eyes. "Go boy go!" I shouted, whacking the lead rope against my thigh and waving my other arm like I did to FlameHeart. I smiled, my birthday is in two weeks and I know exactly what I want! FlameHeart! I shock my head to clear my thoughts so I could focus on the task at hand. I tilted my head in confusion. No Name hadn't moved! I checked that I was doing it correctly and then started again, this time he began to trot along the fence. Every now and then No Name would stop and change direction by himself and wouldn't let me turn him. This went on for about half an hour before he finally started to co-operate. I turned my body so that it faced in front of him and he turned and cantered in the other direction.

No Name came to a standstill, my heart thudded against my chest. I held my breath. His eyes glared at me, his foot scrapped the sand, his nostrils flaring. I took one shaky step towards him, then another, and another. Finally I stood half a metre away from his face. He is 16hands high, VERY big for a Kaimanawa! He reared and released an almighty neigh. I am challenging his leadership, he doesn't like that. Not one little bit.

He started to circle me, this isn't good. Before he was out of my sight I turned and walked away. I heard no hoofs behind me. He hasn't joined up. He wishes to remain lead stallion. Well I feel sorry for him. He's going to be killed if he doesn't accept my authority!

I turned around again and started all over, waving my hand more widely, whacking my thigh more violently. He snorted and began to trot once again.

Only it wasn't because I was making him...

A/N

Okay sorry for the cliffhanger! Oh btw ( by the way ) I have never actually been to the SPCA so don't think that my story describes what it is like! And I don't know if they have different sections for different kinds of animals! Hope you enjoy!

Stay calm and love horses! 😄🐎
