Making Clowns of the World
Chat Noir groaned as he slowly sat up from the unsteady pile of rubble collected at the center of the gym. He had no memory of what had happened, but he was fully aware he was still fragile and made of glass. All the lights in the school were out, capsizing him in a dark hazy world where the only source of light came through the dimness of the sky above him through the open roof of the gym. The bells decorating his jester outfit jingled obnoxiously, alerting anyone who was there in that somberly quiet ruin that he was up and moving. He couldn't remember if Reflekta was in the school or if she still remained outside. He couldn't remember if he'd evacuated the students or not. He didn't know how he got there, or why there was so much rubble.
"Chat Noir?! Is that you?" Ladybug suddenly appeared over him. He could only recognize her by her spotted circus outfit, for she too had become made of glass. Her hair was tucked into a jester's hat with two long red and white bulbous floppy "ears."
"Huh?" Chat Noir felt like his head was splintered into a million pieces.
"It's you! Oh my god, I found you!" she said, tackling him into a hug. "I heard you summon ruination, and Queen Bee said Pollen strictly warned you not to because it could kill you but, you're alive! You're alive!"
"I don't remember anything," Chat Noir admitted. "Was I badass while doing it though?" he asked with a slight snicker.
"I-" Ladybug burst out laughing, though eerily, her mouth didn't move at all. "I'm sorry Chat Noir, it's hard to take you seriously when you look like this! It's just so-"
"Quit clowning around!" Chat Noir joked.
"Oh my god stop-" Ladybug said, hardly able to stop laughing at him.
"Ok, on a more serious note, what's going on?" Chat Noir asked, sitting back up with Ladybug.
"Reflekta managed to get most of the student body," Ladybug reported. "Some students who fell victim sustained injuries. I hope those cracks won't do anything to them when we make them human again, but I don't want to get my hopes up. How are you though? You destroyed like... all of the stairs and the dance floor to catch Refelkta and I have been searching for you for ten minutes now!"
"Yeah, I don't remember any of that," Chat Noir said, "but I'm ok. Looks like Pollen's concern was for nothing!"
"Alright, let's get you on your feet," Ladybug said, standing up and offering him a hand. Chat Noir brought his hand to hers, but before they could even touch fingertips, something went wrong. A pain shot up his arm feeling like bone grinding against bone and before he knew it, his glass hand fell off, landing in the rubble with a delicate little clunk. Ladybug's horrified silence spoke a thousand words.
"Did I just..." Chat Noir brought back his arm, his eyes scouring his forearm where his arm had cleanly broken off. The pain of it was gone.
"I- I-" Ladybug began making sounds of heavy breathing before letting out a terrifying scream. She stumbled backward, tripping over her ridiculous curved shoes and falling on her butt. Chat Noir couldn't make a sound.
Chat Noir saw his ring sparkle on the hand that was no longer a part of him. Plagg did not come out, so the transformation must have been still intact. Just to be cautious, he rolled the glass hand over with his other hand, still stunned.
"My ring..." he muttered.
"D-does it hurt?" Ladybug, sounding as though she were crying.
"No..." Chat Noir said. Ladybug mustered up the ability to crawl over to him. "Let me see your a-arm." He lifted his broken forearm for her to expect. Her glass hands were trembling, making little clinking sounds as they went. "Oh my god... I can't believe this... I... how..."
"Your miraculous ladybugs will fix it... right?" Chat Noir asked, observing her trembling with worry.
"I-I don't know... I-" she looked down to the broken hand, his miraculous sparkling in twilight. "Your ring..."
"It'll have to go on my left hand for now," Chat Noir said.
"You can't fight! Not like this!"
"Yes I can!" Chat Noir said, grabbing her hands tenderly with his. "Everyone has been turned to glass. We're all fragile and before any of us break like this, I want to stop it. Soon. Reflekta will continue on to the rest of Paris. She'll shatter each and every one of us to get our miraculous. I have to help you."
"Me? You mean all of us."
"Of course I do, but you're the one on the verge of a panic attack right now."
"This is... a little strange to hear you speak without seeing your face move. This whole situation is just fucked up," Ladybug said, quavering. "My lucky charm summoned a flashlight. I think I know how to use it. You're right. I'll need you for it."
"Thank you, m'ladybug," Chat Noir said softly.
"I'll help you switch your ring," she said, delicately taking the ring off his broken glass hand. Slowly, she transferred it to his left. It felt weird to have it on the opposite hand now. His cataclysm was always revolving around the ring, and he wondered if he would now have to learn to use his left hand for that. Or rather, for everything. He feared he'd just lost his arm for good, and he didn't know what it would do. Especially with his curse, bad luck would consume him and he'd likely never see the arm again. He'd probably break even more during the fight till he couldn't move anymore. The thought was scary.
"Alright, what's the plan?"
"All the lights are off. We just need to lure Reflekta to one of the dark rooms. Your bells make a ton of sound when you move, so you're the perfect..."
"Bait."
"Yeah. Sorry," she winced. "If I can blind her with the flashlight, it should give us the chance to steal her akuma object."
"Do we know what it is?"
"The handheld mirror she had as a civilian. It's attached to her hand now, so we'll have to break the glass on its surface since it can't be removed. You'll have to keep her still."
"Where are the others?"
"Carapace collected as many students as we could find and huddled them under one giant forcefield to keep them safe. He's a doll now. Rena Rouge is currently tracking down Reflekta whose hidden herself somewhere in the school now to keep away from us. Rena is a doll now too. Queen Bee and Aljara are blocking all the exits so we can keep Reflekta cornered here. They're both dolls. Everyone's a doll. We're fucked."
"We're not fucked," Chat Noir said, "your plan is going to work. Now I admit, I am a little distraught over being the bait but, oh well. The worst has already happened, right?" He rose his broken arm. Ladybug refused to look at it.
"Please don't let yourself fall. Don't use your cataclysm."
"I already did..." Chat Noir said.
"I know but, Chat, I've seen you use it multiple times. Plagg has given you access to that without the detransformation time, it seems."
"Only when I'm emotional," Chat Noir said.
"Are you not emotional right now?"
"I don't know. For some reason I don't feel... anything."
"... We're going to save that conversation for later," Ladybug said, now looking at the dismembered hand. She picked it up in both hands, holding it in front of her chest delicately. "I really hope this isn't permanent. It'll ruin your model career, won't it?"
"I don't think we should be fussing about that right now."
"I know," she said, bringing it to her glass lips and kissing it, though her lips did not move.
"What was that for?"
"For good luck," said Ladybug. She helped him to his feet and together, the two embarked to lure Reflekta into their devised trap.
Finding their way to the upper level without the use of the now destroyed stairs was certainly a chore, but eventually, they made it. Ladybug and Chat Noir met up with Queen Bee and Aljara who'd just finished blocking off all the exits, and relayed the plan to them. They brushed away the topic of Chat Noir's arm, keeping it under the rug. Chat Noir's bells certainly did make a lot of noise, and they were beginning to fear he'd draw Reflekta to them before they got to the right room. The room needed to have a lock on it, but unfortunately, most of the doors were ripped off their hinges.
"We might have to go to the boiler room," Ladybug said. Before anyone could agree, their worst fear came true. Reflekta found them, following the sound of Chat Noir's noisy bells.
"The boiler room? Oh, it's much too dark down there for us to have any fun," Reflekta laughed cruelly. Mockingly, she approached them with swaying hips and exaggerated long model legs.
"You don't want to see what else I can do to you," Aljara said, glowering.
"You're just a copy of Chat Noir, I think I already know what you can do. It isn't that impressive," Reflekta sneered.
"I still have my power of infestation and bane. Infestation may not work on a doll, but bane certainly will. Your already forming cracks are mighty tempting openings to pry at."
"Go ahead. Give it your best shot. I am indestructible, but you?" Reflekta got up close to Ajara who no longer stood on her stilts, "You're already about to break."
"Bane!" Aljara cried out, summoning her power to increase the already existing pain of an opponent. As so, the cracks on Reflekta's arms and legs began to grow, yet she didn't show any sign of being bothered by it. Aljara must not have realized how close she was to the railing which hung out over the gym, but before she knew it, Reflekta had cornered her.
"You can form cracks across my body, but I can splinter you into a thousand pieces in return."
"No-"
Reflekta pushed her. Aljara didn't have the chance to catch herself before she toppled over the edge, the other heroes screaming and ripping at Reflekta to try and prevent it. But it was too late. Aljara had fallen.
The sound of glass shattering echoed about the chambered halls. Little sliding pieces of it raced across the gym floor like snow thrown on a hydrophobic surface in a race to nowhere. Millions and millions of pieces flying in every direction, some held together by her clothes, most disappearing into the rubble, and shadows, or surrounding her now dismembered doll body as Aljara, the briefly known hero, died.
"No-" Ladybug reached for her yoyo before realizing it was already useless. Even if she glued all those pieces back together again, Aljara wouldn't have survived this.
"What have you done?!" the voice of Fraay, kwami of affliction, manifested in the air above Aljara's broken glass body. Her existence there was the token of death. She looked absolutely menacing, more terrifying than Reflekta. Oddly, it was now Fraay the heroes were afraid of.
Fraay sprung up at Reflekta, summoning her power of devastation, the equivalent of cataclysm, to her hands, ready to murder Reflekta right then and there. The other heroes band together to keep her away from Reflekta desperately, and even Reflekta knew better than to try and fight her. And angry kwami was an unsavable one.
"You, the foolish jester, have brought death into the world. By the chiming of breaking glass, the sound of high notes, the feeling and touch of all things sharp, I now curse you to feel the pain brought upon Aljara, locust hero of affliction, savior of the Egyptian Miracle Box, bringer of hope unto the kwamis. Like the splintering of bones within flesh, you will never be at peace. For the rest of your life and after your death you will suffer this fate worse than the face of my hand which desires to bring you demise. You, Juleka Couffaine, villain Reflekta of Hawkmoth, are now cursed," Fraay decreed, her voice booming over the sounds of thoughts and screams.
Fraay swooped her destructive hand in the air, producing a seismic blast which tossed the ground into the air before disappearing in the night sky. Making sure everyone was alright and no one's limbs had broken from the blast, the heroes, and Reflekta, now looked upward to where Fraay hovered high above the school. Even from a distance, they could hear her voice crystal clear, loud like a speaker was placed up to their ears.
"I send a devastation, pestilence and plague unto your city," from the palms of her hand emerged millions of locusts, swarming out over the skies and making the worlds seem darker than it really way, "Unto your streets, your house, your places of comfort, into your wine and bread, into your bed, I send the swarm. Until repentance is paid, until the sun rises down on my brothers and sisters freed from the museums and studies which hold them hostage, Paris, and the rest of France, will face the wrath of this pandemic. And by my hand I shall free you all when you are no longer sinful, selfish, murderous pure beasts. Until you yield power, the children will die. The old will die. The young will feel the sickness of age."
A crack of thunder could be heard and rain now began to fall from the sky, likely contaminated by the locusts which were everywhere, on everything, covering the world.
"Rain will come now but drought will soon follow. Fire will fall from the heavens on the backs of my locusts, and this will be the only storm you'll receive. I send the horde to curse you all. Curse you, the city of Paris. Curse you heroes who have failed me. Curse the kwamis who were weak. Curse the people who do not resist he who holds the reins. Curse Hawkmoth, the destroyer."
Fraay then ceased to exist, disappearing over the cloud of locusts and vanishing into the stormy night.
"What was that?!" Chat Noir stammered.
"I think that... Fraay just cursed us all..." Ladybug said in awe.
"I- I-" Reflekta quivered, "I don't want to do this anymore! Take it! Take my akuma- AH!" she winced as though she'd just been electrocuted, Hawkmoth trying to seize control of her. Her hands were violently shaking when she ripped the mirror from her hands, throwing it against the ground as she defied Hawkmoth's will over her. It shattered, and with the sound of the breaking glass, Reflekta screamed in agony, clutching onto her body which was perfectly unharmed. It was Fraay's curse bestowed to her. Whenever she would hear glass shatter, a high pitched note, or something hurt, she would feel the pain of every bone in her body breaking in the most agonizing way.
As she screamed and cried, the heroes watched as Reflekta morphed back into Juleka who continued to wail and sob, curling up into a ball on the ground as her body was consumed by hot sharp internal pain.
"Hurry Ladybug! Your miraculous Ladybugs might undo all of this!" Chat Noir exclaimed, swatting away a few locusts which were now beginning to crawl all over the school.
"Right... but... Fraay's blast made me lose the flashlight my lucky charm summoned, and my yoyo. Without either..."
"We'll hunt them down, come on!" Chat Noir urged everyone to start searching. Queen Bee at first wanted to go with them, but against her better judgment, decided to stay with Juleka. She said she was afraid the pain might be so bad Juleka would jump over the rail and kill herself just to make it stop, so she needed to be there with her for safety. The other two agreed and quickly hurried to the gym below where the charm and yoyo were thrown. Searching everywhere, the two were fruitless.
"Hurry, hurry!" Chat Noir said. "It can undo a curse, right?"
"I don't know! I didn't even know curses were real!" Ladybug said frantically. They tromped over the rubble hastily.
"They... are..." Chat Noir said distantly. "Hey! I see Rena Rouge!"
He pointed out ahead where, sitting beside a broken door, was Rena Rouge. She had her head slumped forward, so at first, the two figured she was unconscious. But as they approached her, they realized she was fully awake. Even though she was a doll and could produce no tears, they could hear her crying.
"Rena?' Ladybug was the first to get near her. She saw the reason for her tears and her stomach dropped. Just like Chat's arm had cleanly fallen off at the forearm, Rena Rouge's leg was horizontally cut in two at the calf. Her lower part of her leg which was detached lay a few feet away from her. She was sobbing.
"Oh," Chat Noir halted when he saw the matter at hand. "Ladybug, quickly, find your yoyo or charm. I'll... help Rena."
"O-Ok," Ladybug said, fumbling on her feet as she struggled to tear herself away from the scene in search of her lost items.
"You alright?" Chat Noir asked. It was a stupid thing to even say. Of course she wasn't alright. She was missing a leg!
"No," Rena said with a heavy voice.
"I know," Chat bowed his head. He squat down next to her and showed her his broken arm. "I guess we both ran out of luck."
"That's your whole thing though. Bad luck. Curses."
"I know. Pretty inescapable for me, huh?" Chat Noir said, trying to bring up her spirits but failing. "Look, hopefully the miraculous ladybugs will fix all this. No more curses, no more... dismembered limbs..."
For some reason that last part made Rena laugh.
"You know what, Chat?" she motioned for him to sit next to her and he did, "I've been so caught up in my head all this time. I've been blaming my insecurities and pain on you. Trixx told me your aura brought bad luck, since you can't control that power of yours yet. So I've been avoiding fighting alongside you. I've been going out of my way to stay on the sidelines. And now look at me. The shape of my leg is worse than it was before. And I... I feel... I feel ok."
"You feel ok?"
"Yeah. I feel ok."
"Me too."
There was a moment of silence between the two before Rena said, "you know what Chat Noir? I'm glad I get to be your teammate. I'm sorry for not realizing that sooner."
"That's alright."
"Strangely, I don't think I would be devastated if Ladybug's magic didn't fix my leg. The disability has grown on me."
"It's only been an hour at most," Chat Noir said.
"Not in my civilian life," Rena shook her head, "not in my civilian life."
"Oh. So, you're ok?"
"I think so. I think... I am who I'm supposed to be, and what happens to me, good and bad, is up to me, and I can handle it how I want. And I choose to be ok."
"That's good."
"You should do the same, Chat Noir."
"I don't... think I'm ready."
"That's alright," said Rena Rouge, "that's alright."
A rush of ladybugs swarmed the area, restoring all the destruction caused by Chat Noir during the fight and changing everyone back into their human selves. The first thing Chat Noir did was check his arm, still clinging to hope. Hope prevailed. His arm had been restored. He tested his hand, wiggling each and every finger and rotating it around his wrist.
Looking down at Rena Rouge, he saw that her leg had not been restored. Instead, she had an amputated leg with a few chunky scars at the end of the nub, just under her knee. She didn't look distraught by this at all, but rather, relieved. A huge pain in her life had been alleviated. Finally, she could be free from Lady Wifi, which Chat Noir was completely oblivious to.
"Will you be ok?" Chat Noir asked.
"Yes," Rena Rouge said softly. "I'll be fine. Go find Ladybug. Her power didn't restore what had happened with... Fraay's curse." She looked up to the sky as she said this, seeing it was still swarming with locusts.
"I'll send Carapace to come help you."
"Please do."
