Book 2 - A Glimpse of the Fox

A/N

Warning y'all I didn't like this chapter. It feels really flat and forced but it's dedicated to Alya and it is very plot important.

"They won't sleep!" Alya groaned, on the absolute brink of insanity.

"I knew we shouldn't have given them caffeine earlier!" Marienette proclaimed.

"That was hours ago! They can't possibly still be hyper!"

"I don't know, they're YOUR sisters!"

"Ugh!" Alya groaned again. She turned around sharply, marching toward her little sisters with a slight gimp due to the prosthetic leg she now had. "Time for bed you little monsters!"

The twin girls giggled at Alya's ridiculous pursuit and began running circles around her, cackling like little witches. Alya made several sounds of anguished frustration, trying to settle them down. She couldn't move fast enough to keep either still, and nothing Marinette was doing was helping either.

"We're the sapotis! We don't go to bed!"

"You brats! It's bed time!"

"It's not fair!" one of the girls complained while the other still laughed, "we don't wanna go to bed! We wanna stay up like you!"

"If you go to bed late you'll turn into zombies tomorrow and we won't be able to go to the amusement park!"

"NOOOOOOOO!" both girls screamed.

"Exactly." Alya nodded proudly. "So what'll it be? Boring, staying up late, sitting in pajamas with the big kids? Or super fun amusement park tomorrow?!"

"Amusement park!" both girls screamed and suddenly sprinted to their bedroom.

Marinette was honestly surprised that Alya's manipulation worked. Carefully, both girls crept to the twins' bedroom and peaked inside. The girls were excitedly getting into bed, still giggling but shushing each other at the same time so they wouldn't get in trouble. Alya quietly shut the door and faced Marinette.

"I can't believe that worked," Marinette whispered, dumbfounded. "But what are the... sapotis?" The girls had been chanting that over and over, pretending to be these creatures and refusing to go to bed.

"They're these little monsters from a creole fable. They just pull pranks and do mischief," Alya said, heading back to the living room of the apartment. Marinette followed her into the kitchen as she explained. The two were having a sleepover at the cost of babysitting the little girls. Alya poured them two glasses of chocolate milk and set them on the counter, preparing to get cookies before they'd watch a movie together.

"That's actually cute," Marinette said, helping Alya set up a platter.

"Yeah, but it's really obnoxious when the girls play pretend like that. They think they can get away with anything if they blame it on the sabotis."

"Uh.... Alya?"

"Yeah?"

"The chocolate milk–" Marinette pointed to where the glasses had been set on the counter, now missing.

"Ugh!" Alya stormed back to the girls room as fast as she could on her dumb leg. Marinette heard the girls shout, "it's not us! It's the sabotis!" and then Alya, "enough! Just go to bed!"

"Sorry," Alya groaned when she came back. She got two new glasses and poured chocolate milk in them, this time keeping them close to herself so she could guard them. "They're little monsters."

"It's kind of cute."

"Kind of. Until you live with them."

"On a change of subject, I know you're really into superheroes..." Marinette said and watched Alya's eyes light up. Marinette was about to ask if she'd heard of this new Roosterbold guy but Alya beat her to it.

"Have you heard of Roosterbold?!" Alya asked enthusiastically.

"I was just about to ask you that."

"Ask me?! Girl, it's all I can think about! This guy comes out of nowhere and is the exact embodiment of what comic heroes are! He saves the common people, and I don't even think Ladybug and Chat Noir know who he is!"

"He did," Marinette chimed, "hopefully that doesn't conflict with them at any point though..."

"What do you think his powers are?" Alya said, sounding very educated on the subject, "Ladybug is creation, Chat Noir is destruction– er- well they have multiple powers, but you know... Carapace consistently has that shield forcefield, and extra endurance! But this guy is completely unpredictable!"

"Perhaps his are simply imagination."

"Simply?! That's too complex to be simple! No, I think he's–" Alya cut herself short, noticing that a good handful of the cookies... most of the cookies on their cookie platter had just been stolen. "GIRLS!" she stormed back to their bedroom, "get out of bed one more time and NO ONE is going to the amusement park tomorrow!"

"It's not us! It's the sabotis!"

"This is your last warning!" Alya fumed. Marinette waited patiently for her to return to the kitchen.

"Okay! Okay!"

Alya came back, still fuming.

"What were you saying about his power?" Marinette asked, hoping to calm her down.

"I think he can pick any power he wants. Like you said, imagination. But it's limited."

"Kinda cool, right?"

"Yeah."

"You know, Luka and I watched a really dumb documentary yesterday about Ladybug and Chat Noir," Marinette said. Alya gave up on the cookie platter and the two went back to the living room to watch TV.

"I think I've seen that one. It started good but ended really dumb."

"It did," Marinette giggled.

"Did you hear they're making a movie about them though? Of course, completely fictional and based on theory but I heard the whole Miracle Team would be in it."

"That's cool," Marinette said. Alya turned the TV on and started the movie they'd agreed to watch. They got two minutes in when the movie suddenly paused and the girls could be heard behind them, giggling.

"THAT'S IT!" Alya shot back up and nearly fell over.

"It's not us! It's the sabotis!"

"I don't care!" Alya said, grabbing both girls by the collars of their shirts and hobbling back to their bedroom, "stay in bed!"

"We won't do it again!"

"Too late! We will all go to the park when you can behave some other day! Goodnight!"

As the girls resumed their movie, this time in peace, two other characters hid in Alya's bedroom; Tikki and Roaar.

"Have you made any headway?" Tikki asked. She was in her full form, as was Roarr who had managed to convince Alya to take off her panjas bracelet.

"Not at all," Roaar said in dismay. It was odd to see her so distressed. She was usually more mischievous than Trixx, goofier than Plagg even. But she'd not lost two of her best friends to evil and it had made the kwami make a mournful change.

"Lila Rossi hasn't returned to class since her akumatization," Tikki said, "I doubt she's even in the city anymore. And you've found no way of tracking her?"

"She's convinced Trixx somehow to disguise himself from our senses, just like Nooroo and Dusuu were."

"It's odd that she hasn't used his miraculous yet. Perhaps she's not as compatible with it as we thought," Tikki considered.

"I sense she's returning soon," Roaar said, "it's like Trixx is telling me himself."

"I'm sorry," Tikki said, placing an affirming hand on Roaar's shoulder. The tiger kwami would never admit it but she was on the brink of tears. Pursuing this chase for two months now had taken its toll.

"I've never felt so alone," she confessed, "even when I've had heroes in the past, we've always had company. But Alya has to keep me hidden. I lost Dusuu, then Plagg left to save him, and now Trixx? I have only Xuppu left but now I've abandoned him too."

"You haven't abandoned anyone. You are nobly on a rescue mission for Trixx. Once you get him back, you can return to the sanctuary."

"But I can stop at that," Roaar said, a flicker of her feisty personality revealing itself, "once Trixx is back, I'm choosing to stay out here to save Dusuu and Nooroo. Besides, Alya has been antsy to get back to fighting akumas. Not even losing a leg or her miraculous could make her waver. She and Trixx formed a bond I cannot fill, but I think she's capable of wielding both of us."

"That is a heavy burden that almost never ends well for the ordinary."

"Alya isn't ordinary."

Cackling could be heard from the twins' bedroom. Not even twenty minutes into their movie, Alya was enraged by them again.

"That's it! I've had it with them!" Alya said, standing back up angrily. She stormed off. "Don't even try to blame this on the sapo– AAAAAAAAH!"

"Alya!" Marinette stood up in alarm after she heard Alya fall in the hallway. She was about to go check on her when suddenly, two little devils came running at her. Alarmed, Marinette leapt up on the couch. The two devils devoured what was left of the cookie platter, including the platter itself, making devilish noises as they went about in havoc. "They were akumatized! Perhaps you were too harsh on them?"

"Normally–" Alya was interrupted by the two devils suddenly duplicating– "Normally when you're firm with kids they don't turn into actual monsters!"

Literal hell broke loose. The devils continued to spontaneously duplicate, going from four, to eight, to now sixteen. They tore up the curtains, ate all the food in the fridge, broke the TV, and one was even dangling from the ceiling fan.

"Don't let them outside–" before the command could even be made, the devil children were rushing out the apartment door, some even flooding out the windows over the streets below. "Shit. I gotta go."

"Go where?" Marinette asked.

"I– Gotta make sure they don't... I don't know! Bye!" Alya disappeared. She hurried to her own bedroom where she knew Roaar would be waiting for her with the panja bracelet. "Roaar–" Alya swore she saw a glimpse of another kwami but it quickly disappeared. Roaar stood suspiciously in the center of the room, quite startled. "Was someone in here just now?"

"No." Roaar lied.

"Who was it?"

"Just a kwami from the sanctuary," she lied again, "checking to make sure we're okay with uh... our mission."

"Right..." Alya said suspiciously, "my sisters were akumatized. Where's the bracelet?"

"Woah now! You're not allowed to fight akumas," Roaar said, "as awesome as it would be to punch your sisters a bunch, you're strictly supposed to focus on finding Volpina and nothing more."

"Well, we're not making much headway with that, are we?" Alya said, "and my sisters are probably wrecking a bunch of other apartments here, and who knows how far the ones outside have gotten. I have to do this."

"Ladybug and Chat Noir will take care of this. Maybe even the Roosterbold guy."

"Roaar," Alya's gaze flattened.

"I'm sorry Alya! I don't want to get in trouble with Tikki!"

"Roaar! Please! Just this once!"

"Hawkmoth can't know you're still active," Roaar said, but Alya noticed her pulling something out from within her sleeve. She handed Alya the bracelet, refusing to look at her. "Please don't get us in trouble."

"Thank you," Alya said, slipping the bracelet on.

Tigre Rouge was the hero Alya became when using the miraculous of the tiger. With it, she only got one power, the ability to supercharge her fist for an epic climactic blasting punch called clout. She felt stronger as Rena Rouge, and knew it was likely because she was better fit for the fox due to her wittiness and preference to stay back in a fight. The tiger forced her to close in on opponents, something she was less confident with.

The sapotis, akumatized devilish twins, were spreading chaos everywhere they went. Tigre was beaten to the game by Ladybug and, though she wanted to help her, had to hold back. No one could know Tigre was still active, they'd start to question why she wasn't helping with the other akumatizations and even worse, Hawkmoth could be led to her identity. She went opposite of where Ladybug was going since the sapotis had gone in all directions anyway.

Observing Ladybug, Tigre noticed the creatures disappeared when the little devilish hats they wore on their heads were broken. But none of that freed the akuma. So she had to... get rid of them all to find the real two.

There were hundreds of them. This was going to prove itself impossible.

"Rena?!"

Shit.

Tigre looked up to the upper ledge of an apartment building, finding Chat Noir perched there. She was currently fighting off as many sapotis as she could but she wasn't fair very well.

"What are you doing here?!" Chat Noir leapt down, taking out a few sapotis with his baton as he did so.

"Uh...."

"Are these illusions then? So Volpina is back."

"N-no, they're not," Tigre said, "you weren't supposed to see me."

"With all due respect, you weren't exactly hiding."

Tigre sighed. The two teamed up, fighting off the sapotis who were unlucky enough to find themselves near the two heroes. "We need to find the original two. They're sisters."

"What are you doing out here?"

"Helping you two, I guess. I'm sorry."

"Hey, I'm not complaining. I've been missing my friends so I'm glad to see you again."

Tigre smiled at that.

The sapotis weren't going anywhere. For every one they destroyed it seemed two more would spontaneously take their place. Even using his cataclysm to get a few destroyed long range, Chat Noir could hardly make a dent in the growing crowd of devils.

"Man, we really could use Ladybug right now," Chat Noir said.

"She's already out here fighting just a few streets away," Tigre reported.

"Then Carapace! Ugh! Why can't we just have our team back? It was so much easier back then!"

"What we need is a distraction," Tigre said, "something to tempt them all and get them in one location. We need... Well, it would be great if I was actually Rena Rouge right now."

"Hey, what's that?!" Chat Noir pointed over the buildings in the distance where an amusement park had magically erected out of thin air. It caught all the sapotis' attention. The little devils, everywhere they were in the city, were now rushing toward the giant, glorious image of an amusement park glowing in the night.

"Volpina..." Tigre said in horror.

"How?"

"It's an illusion, Chat!" Tigre exclaimed, "she's back! After two months of silence she comes back out of nowhere?!"

"And she's helping us..."

"We need to find her," Tigre said, preparing to jump back into action. "Well- uh– I guess I should find her. You have to pretend you didn't see me. At least, don't let Ladybug know."

"I have to help you," he said strongly. "Besides, she could be gathering the akuma there with an ulterior motive!"

"Fine!" Tigre said, "but it's my fight with her." She jumped into the air, her super jump allowing her to easily get to the apartment rooftops. "I'm coming, Trixx," she whispered, running in the direction of the illusion.

The illusion vanished the second Tigre reached it. Behind her, Chat Noir barely caught up and behind him was Ladybug, now joining.

"Rena?!" Ladybug said in surprise.

"Volpina is back," Tigre warned her, then added, "nice to see you again, by the way."

"Nice to see you too, but uh– Have the sapotis been illusions this whole time?"

"No, they're real," Tigre informed, "the amusement park was fake but now it's gone and she's hidden herself. I think this was a trap."

"For the sapotis or for us?" Chat asked.

"For us," Tigre said. "You two focus on the akuma. My job is with Volpina."

"Got it," Ladybug said, returning to the streets below to start thinning out the crowd of devilish creatures. Chat Noir gave Tigre an unsure look before joining his partner in heroism.

"Alright Volpina, you got our attention, now wh–"

"BOO!" someone shouted loudly in Tigre's ear. She jumped, clamping a hand over her ear and looking for the voice. No one was there.

"You're hilarious," she deadpanned, "woman up already and fight me."

"Two months of stalking each other and never once could you find me," Volpina's voice said. No matter where she looked, Tigre couldn't find her. "But I've learned a lot through you."

"What do you even want?!"

"I don't need it, but your bracelet would be an excellent trophy."

"Show yourself!"

"Two months of waiting for you to find me and you never came. I even left so many clues for you and you were just too stupid to pick up on them. I've gotten bored."

"If you're bored then come out here to do what you were gonna do."

"Careful what you ask for," Volpina said. Her body manifested right in front of Tigre, as if forming from the shadows. She still wore that stupid mask, her whole outfit the same as it was when she'd been akumatized, which darkened after actually stealing the fox. Even with that fox shaped chinese mask, Tigre could see the smile curling under it. She held a violin bow at her side as if wielding a sword, and in the other hand, the violin itself.

"You're a coward for hiding so long. Afraid you'd lose to me?"

"You weren't worth the effort," Volpina sneered.

They instantly clashed. Wielding her bow, Volpina slashed at Tigre who deflected it with her claws. It was in rapid succession, attack, defend, attack, defend, as if dancing all around each other on this roof but never being able lay a scratch on the other. Volpina laughed as they fought, relishing in how easily she was besting Tigre Rouge.

"Two months off the field got you out of practice!" Volpina said with a grand smile hidden beneath her mask.

"And I'll still kick your ass!" Tigre said, spinning around with her robotic leg in the air in an attempt to kick her in the stomach. Volpina wedged her cow in the crevasse of Tigre's robotic ankle and twisted it, momentarily disabling the cyborg-leg. She lept backward, elegant like a fox.

"The leg looks cool, doesn't seem to lag your attacks at all!"

"Why did you want our attention?"

"You're a threat to me and my plan. I need to get rid of you, simple as that," Volpina said.

Tigre charged. Volpina raised her bow to her violin. The world went black.

"What is this place?" Tgre asked, consumed by a void of darkness. She heard Volpina laugh.

"You of all people know it's an illusion. How's it feel to be blind?"

Tigre closed her eyes, tuning into her senses. Though now in a void, she could still hear the fight below following Ladybug and Chat Noir against the sapotis. She could hear the rooftop tap a little under Volpina's footing. The fox approached, the tiger pounced.

"Clout!" Tigre shouted, supercharging her fist with her power. The illusion around her vanished just as she almost took Volpina's head right off her shoulders. The girl successfully dodged and now Tigre's hand was fueled with powerful energy, dying to be unleashed.

"I wanted you to find me. I stalked you in hopes you'd lead me to the sanctuary. But you're more stupid than I thought," Volpina said. "You didn't notice any crumbs I left behind on purpose. How can you claim this is your more important mission if you can't even follow it?"

"Shut up Lila!" Tigre tried punching her again but Volpina easily got away.

"Shut up Alya," Volpina mocked. "How's class been without me? Mundane as ever? You still trying to learn there as if a diploma will solve all your problems? Hawkmoth is about to destroy the world, why should you care about that?"

"What are you even trying to do?" Tigre fumed.

"My glorious purpose!" Volpina declared, "restoring natural order to the world by hiding or destroying all the miraculous! Maybe when I'm done you'll understand I am a hero."

"You're no hero!" Tigre said, striking again. Volpina fought back this time, slashing at her with her violin bow which was as sharp as a blade. It cut deep into Tigre's shoulder. She screamed in agony, falling back and clutching her wound tenderly.

"I don't need your miraculous but I might as well claim it while I can. That would get rid of you, at least," Volpina snarled.

"Then I'll claim another miraculous and kill you to get the tiger and fox again."

"That's cute because it's exactly what I'd want you to do, idiot," Volpina said. She slashed at Tigre again, cutting her across the chest. Tigre screamed again out of pain. "You're feeding me the miraculous, perfect."

"Why the hell are you collecting them?"

"It doesn't matter. I'll be the one to stop Hawkmoth in the end. I will be the savior. And I'll use the these powers for the selfless reasons they're intended for!"

"Bullshit!" Tigre said. She jumped up again to punch Volpina. Expecting the attack, Volpina dodged. However, Tigre's target had been the fucking air itself. Charging her fist to the max, Tigre punched the air and released it over Volpina's head. It blew the fox villain right off the roof, which was now stripped of its shingles. The blast pushed Volpina through the walls of the nearby buildings almost cartoonishly. She regained herself on the street below, climbing out of the hole in the wall her body formed. Volpina's mask fell, revealing Lila beneath.

"Dumbass," she heard Volpina whisper in her ear.

"Wh–"

Volpina, standing on the roof next to her, clobbered Tigre in the head with the body of her violin. The illusion of her in the street disappeared just before Tigre was knocked out.

When she awoke, Volpina stood in front of her, holding both of Alya's little sisters in her arms. Her violin bow was raised over their bellies, threatening to spill their guts.

Tigre could only stare desperately in horror. She looked to her sides and discovered Ladybug out cold and Chat Noir cowering over his partner's body. Tigre looked back at Volpina, preparing to plea.

"Turn over your miraculous, and I'll let the girls go," Volpina said.

"Not a chance," Chat seethed.

"I wasn't talking to you," Volpina glared.

"Don't you fucking hurt them," Tigre seethed.

"I wasn't planning to, assuming you give me your miraculous," Volpina said.

"You insist on torturing me."

"It's fun," Volpina grinned, "I'll tell you what. I'll give you an out. Just tell me the bug and cat's identities and I'll let you and these two girls go. You all keep your miraculous that way."

"That's even worse! And besides, I don't know their identities!"

"Liar! You knew Carapace's!"

"Not until after you stole my miraculous!"

"If that's so, then tell me his!"

Tigre spat at the ground. "No."

Volpina inched the violin bow closer to the bellies of Alya's sisters. Tigre gasped, a shiver running across her whole body in a moment of terror. The girls were still unharmed.

"Fine," she said, slipping her hand over her panja bracelet. She took it off, tearing away her transformation. She was Alya once more. She stretched her hand out to Volpina. "Just... Give them back..."

"Alya?" Chat Noir said in shock.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"Fine," she said, slipping her hand over her panja bracelet. She was about to take it off when something stopped her.

"Stop!" a boy shouted. Tigre looked up in surprise as someone new jumped up on the roof behind her. He had a turquoise hero suit, shoulders bare and exposed. His arms were wrapped in blue bands, and his mask was sharp at the corners, almost like snake fangs. He carried a blue electric guitar strapped to his back.

"Who are you?" Tigre said, feeling a shiver cross her body.

"Viperion," he answered, "and no matter what you do, she takes your sisters. Don't give up your miraculous."

"What?!" Tigre recoiled. Viperion stretched a hand over her and she experienced a weird shift in the world.

"Who are you?" Tigre asked, feeling a shiver cross her body.

"Viperion," he answered again, "remember what I just told you?"

"Yes..." Tigre looked back to Volpina who still threatened to kill her sisters.

"She doesn't have her violin, just the bow," Viperion whispered, crouching next to Tigre. "I'll give you one more chance after this. She can't make illusions without the violin. You can fight back. When you do, she will drop your sisters over the roof. I will catch them, so don't get distracted. No matter how we slice this fight though, she will get away. What matters is getting your sisters to safety. Just stall long enough for that to happen. You won't be able to retrieve your miraculous this time."

"I don't understand."

"You will," he assured.

"Who are you?" Tigre asked, feeling a shiver cross her body.

"Viperion," he answered again, "now go!"

It was weird. Tigre couldn't explain exactly what just happened cause she felt like several memories had just overlapped. Nonetheless, her legs moved on their own. With her clawed hand, she ran for Volpina. Volpina instantly dropped both of her sisters over the roof ledge in an effort to sway the attack but Tigre knew to pursue. She slashed across Volpina's face, feeling justice was served as blood gushed from the girl's forehead. Volpina shrieked, trying to get Tigre away from her, shouting about how she just sacrificed the two twins to their deaths, desperate to try and save her own neck.

Tigre spotted Viperion below, like a streak of green and blue. He caught both her sisters and was now running away with them. Tigre continued to attack Volpina who now drew her bow against her. They clashed, like they were dancing. Tigre looked back one more time and saw Viperion and her sisters were nowhere to be seen.

She backed away from the fight. Volpina could hardly catch her breath. The fox villain took the moment to check the wound on her forehead. By now, Ladybug was waking up. Tigre returned to the other two heroes, eyeing Volpina cautiously. Volpina was glaring at her but made no real efforts to move.

"I know your weakness," Volpina seethed,  then disappeared over the chimneys.

"You let her get away!" Chat Noir shouted.

"That hero just now told me we can't beat her this time. I... trust him for some reason."

"Ugh," Ladybug groaned, now fully awake. She rubbed her head sorely, "the snake miraculous. Why would Carapace send Sass out here? Ugh, this is such a mess."

"Well, he saved us. I would have lost the tiger miraculous without him, I think."

"We need to have a little talk with our turtle friend," Chat grumbled, helping Ladybug up on her feet. "We should find that snake hero first though."

"He's here to help," Tigre assured, "but why... Why didn't Carapace trust himself or Queen Bee to return instead..."

"We should all visit him. Together," Ladybug said, "it's been a while, we might as well say hi and clear the air."
