Three
Jungkook trails down the aisle, head jerking either side trying to decide what fish he should buy. He had no idea what fish mermaids even liked, whether they were fussy or had particular favourites. The buying of fish had never been so hard or thought provoking. He starts to think about what sort of fish he likes and if the creature might like that. So with his taste buds in mind he picks out a few tuna large tuna fish and snapper just enough to fill a bucket full. He pays for with money he may or may not have borrowed from his dad's wallet before he left for work in the morning.
Once he's paid he balances the bucket on his knees when he gets himself situated on his bike.
The ride to the beach wasn't long, knowing the route off by heart, it second nature to him after all these years. He dumps his bike by the side of the surf club building, letting it lean against it while he gets himself changed and ready to dunk into the blue lit water.
He shimpy's his board shorts on, putting on a new clean bright pink sleeveless rash shirt that he normally uses for carnivals. When he's all geared up, he takes his bucket of fish and board down to the water's edge. Pushing his board out, placing the bucket safely on he jumps up. His arms slip into the water, pushing him forward with every stroke he makes. Before he knew it he's out in the open water, paddling around aimlessly.
He boards over to where the hidden cave rested, guessing he'd start there. When he gets to the opening, he stops, hooking his legs on either side of his board he treads water. His bucket stayed balancing on the board, he digs into it and grabs out a limp, dead eyed fish.
"Wait? Will this attract sharks?" Jungkook asked himself, a sudden anxiousness that he might entice the wrong kind of creature.
But when he thought about it sharks never came to this beach, the closest thing was dolphins and even then that's rare. He shrugs it off, if it did attract them he could just sprint to the shore inside the cave. He holds the dead, delicious slimy fish in his hands over the water. He dangles it above in a teasing manner, every now and then dunking the head in the water. His legs swing about through the rippling waves that would pass by, his patience wearing thin though it had only been ten or so minutes. Just when his arm gets tired of holding the fish up, dropping it into the icy water something disturbs the still water under him.
A dark figure circles around him, dashing for the limp fish drifting down to the depths. His first instinct told him to bring his legs out of the water, starting gaping it as the threat of a shark loomed. But the second the thought crossed his mind the figure's swimming up towards him. He doesn't get a chance to react before it collides with the bottom of his board and the force is capsizing him over and he's tumbling into the ocean water. The bucket comes with him, a few of the fish falling out before he gets the chance to catch it.
He gets devoured by the water, soaked head to toe in its salty wake. His head jumps to the surface, legs kicking about to keep him afloat while he holds the now half empty bucket as he swims to his board. He grips desperately onto the edges, keeping him stable. His head jolts about, searching for whatever it was that caused him to fall off his board. But he soon finds out when he hears the familiar squeak and sees the splashing of water on the other side of his board.
A blonde set of locks arises from the water, then a smiling face that had its mouth full of his freshly brought fish between his sharp fangs. He grins at Jungkook, the two fish sitting comfortably in his mouth.
"It's you! You've got the fish I see." Jungkook smiles back at him, struggling to get back on his board.
The creature squeaks at him, starting to chomp down on his fish almost moaning as he devoured it. He lets the bones drop into the water, drift down until it settles deep in the sand. When he's done he looks to Jungkook awaitingly, cocking his head innocently to the side.
"Hungry huh? Where were you yesterday?" Jungkook tries talking to it, curious if he could even understand him.
The mermaid quarks at him, blinking rapidly at him clearly trying to decipher what he had said. Though he didn't seem to get far as he just squeals again and points to the bucket in his hands. Jungkook laughs sweetly at him, pulling out a fish. He dangles it in front of him, but not for long as it's quickly snapped from his grasp.
"Can you understand me? Do you speak english?" Jungkook asked, watching him eat the fish like a wild animal.
The mermaid flicks his gaze to him, still munching away without responding to what he had said.
"Korean? Do you speak Korean maybe?" Jungkook goes for another language, wondering if there was a way to communicate with this creature.
The mermaid finishes eating, dumping the bones in its trash bin which was the sea bed. It wines for another one, somehow aware Jungkook had more in that shiny bucket of his.
"Do you have a name?" Jungkook starts miming best he can, pointing to himself then back to him.
The mermaid squints its eyes, cutely pouting as it tried with all its might to understand. But all it could focus on was the deliciousness that is held inside the shiny thing.
"My names Jungkook, Jungkook. J-U-N-J-K-O-O-K." Jungkook mouths each letter, pulling out another fish.
It snatches the fish, crunching down on its spine and chewing on the tender meat inside.
"Do you live here?" Jungkook kept asking him questions in hopes he'd get something in return.
For the first time the creature responds, nodding his head with a fish lodged in his mouth. He points to the cave, nodding his head eagerly in excitement.
"Really? You live here? So, those things on the rocks are yours right?" Jungkook points to the rock in the distant still holding the various human scraps.
The mermaid's eyes light up when he points to the rock, dropping his half eaten fish he's suddenly diving under the water to appear by his special rock with all his keepsakes. Jungkook watches him fondly, still in awe that he's actually here. That it wasn't all a hallucination and this creature actually exists. The mermaid squeals for him, his tail flicking through the air looking eagerly to him to come over. Jungkook doesn't hesitate to obey, boarding over to the shallows where the mermaid sat half sitting in the water with his upper body out. It picks up one of the shards of glass, it a faded orange colour. He pushes it in front of Jungkook's face in excitement, smiling brightly.
"You like this?" Jungkook takes the dulling glass, hooking his legs completely over his board.
The creature ignores him, grabbing another one of his many items which just so happened to be the broken chained he'd picked up the day before to admire. He wraps his around his neck, smiling at him while his tail wagged. Jungkook can't help but laugh at him, never seen anyone so happy with a useless broken necklace before.
"You really like these huh? You know I could get you an actual necklace not a broken one." Jungkook watches him pretend to wear it, showing it off to him proudly.
He put the necklace back down neatly in its place, going next for one of the water damaged watches. He tries strapping it to his tiny wrist, gumbling and groaning when his webbed fingers struggles with the hooks.
"Want me to help?" Jungkook gives him back the glass, taking his wrist to which the mermaid skeptically allows.
The mermaid watches with adoring eyes as Jungkook magically gets the watched secured around his wrist.
"See? Just like that, all you need to do it hook the little needle through the hole." Jungkook knew the creature couldn't understand a goddamn word but enjoyed filling the otherwise silent air.
He squeals at him in thank you, tail flapping about like a dog excited. It looks at his wrist wide eyed, twisting it around admiring how the watched looked on him.
"Hmm I need to figure out what to call you. How about squeals? Blondie?" Jungkook plays off names, struggling to find the right name for this strange creature.
The mermaid smiles at him, it out of politeness since he had not an ounce of an idea what the hell this human was saying.
"No, you need a proper name not a stupid pet name. What do you look like? A Bobby? Theo? Oh! How about a korean name?" He asked for his opinion though knowing he'd get no reply in return.
Jungkook thinks for a moment, snapping his fingers when one that is almost to perfect pops up. The creature flinches at the unusual sound, eyes widening looking curiously at him.
"How about Jimin? It's a cute name for a cute boy?-Mermaid?-Merman?" Jungkook wasn't sure but all he knew was Jimin sounded right-no perfect.
Jimin. His name is Jimin.
