Chapter 7: Royalty

Long chapter, but I wrote it in two days. Hurray to me because I wanted to get this out before I drown in exams. And I hate it. Thank you so much for the 6k on this book already. I love you all so much.

(Arie's POV)

The sun was bright enough to burn my retinas and blind me for good, but the clouds below were just too mesmerizing not to be admired. I lowered the window shade and looked away at the energized bodies hustling down the aisle of the second floor. From what Soph told me, we were to land in Italy in about an hour after I puked for the seventh time being on this airplane.

"You okay?" Ashton asked as he pulled out his small carry bag from the overhead compartment. "You look really down."

"Air sick," I sighed, uncurling my legs from my chest and sitting straight. "And I just miss home." He hummed to my response and retrieved a football from the bag. "What are you doing?"

"Me and the others are going to play downstairs," he beamed and stuffed his bag back into the compartment.

"Ashton, grow up," I chided, grabbing his wrist. "This isn't a football field, it's a plane. Sit your ass down."

"We aren't playing literal football, and we're on a vacation." He yanked my hold off and smiled cheekily. "Let me have fun if you don't want to."

He strode away, ignoring my yelling whispers and shunning my voice completely. Helplessly, I sat there for another minute or so, watching some of the staff members take trays of food into Leo's little room at the end which pulled me back into the thought of what happened at night. It had been playing in my head like a never-ending Ferris wheel on a loop. Him standing over me, caressing my cheek and smiling while I couldn't help but shed a tear, uttering the word sorry.

Groaning to myself, I held Leo's locket in my sweaty palm before slowly removing it from my neck. The most precious gift dangled from the delicate chain that held the weight up quite brilliantly. I squeezed the promise in my hand and sighed. Getting off my ass, I sauntered down the aisle and then the stairs where my ears picked up on loud laughter and chatter. I braced myself and walked into the frantic mess.

"Don't be stupid. This is no place to play," Athena scolded, crossing her arms below her breasts.

"Arie," Lina chirped up. "Come sit with us."

I smiled meekly. "Yeah, just a second." The unnecessary 'football' match commenced with Ashton and Gus on one team, and Wren and Eros on the other. I didn't know what they were trying to accomplish by throwing the ball at one another in this tight space with no room for bulky idiots to tackle or even move very freely. Basically, they were a bunch of kids running around without parental supervision. The D'Angelo and Bonferroni parents had been a bit distant to say the least. "I hate to admit this, but I agree with Athena. Wait till the plane lands and then start playing in the airport for all I care."

"Bossy Sirena," Augustus winked at me with a sly smirk tugging on his lips. "I like it."

Snorting, I continued my trek to the seat where I last left my purse. My conscience screamed at me the most degrading slurs for wearing a promise that everyone knew could never be fulfilled. And the promise being admired by the man's wife was just a filthy cherry on top and a shameful slap to my face.

I dragged my purse across the seat and slid the zipper open. My eyes fanned over the locket one last time. Until my conscience would allow me to wear it again, it was going to stay buried in my jewelry box with my mother's locket that Aunt Wendy gave me on my twenty-first birthday, also known as the worst day of my life that literally started the chain reaction of the most unfortunate events.

A long, tired breath slipped past my lips as I began lowering the locket into my purse, but a hard blow to the back of my head sent me stumbling forward which resulted in my forehead meeting the wall rather roughly and the necklace flying elsewhere.

"Shit!" A couple voices gasped in unison as I held my aching head.

"Bunch of immature idiots," Athena spat at the boys.

Removing my palm from my throbbing head, I noticed the dark burgundy fluid trickling down my fingertips. "Great," I muttered under my breath before I was jerked around by Ashton.

"Let me see." Ashton frowned upon seeing the metallic liquid smudged on my forehead and hand. "That's a lot of blood."

"Will you ever grow up?" I glowered, anger building up inside me.

"It was my fault," Gus hurried to my side and lifted my chin to examine my injury. "You're going to be fine."

"I know," I lightly shoved his towering chest back.

With my hand compressed against the wound, I hauled my purse to my chest and attempted to push past everyone huddling around me, trying to have a look at the helpless, injured girl.

"You don't have to worry about me. I just need a mirror and I can patch myself up." Their eyes felt like needles aiming for my respiratory organs because my throat was beginning to constrict due to their suffocating presence.

"Let me see," Athena pushed through the men surrounding me and scanned her eyes over my wound. "It isn't severe."

"Oh my God!" Rome gasped, butting his way in with the dog in his arms. "My new homegirl."

"Give me some room," I demanded but it was as if my words went over their heads. They continued talking over me like I didn't matter. "I don't need your help." Still no response from them. I scrunched my eyes shut to block out their irrelevant gibberish.

"It wasn't meant to hit her."

"She's bleeding."

"Get the first aid kit."

"Leo might be furious."

"He's going to kill me."

"Give the girl some damn room," I heard Athena scream.

They all bantered about whose fault it was and tried to be doctors by diagnosing me as if I had the rarest disease. Their clawing voices made my head pound harder than ever and my anger hit the fan.

"Just shut the fuck up!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, abruptly halting their argument. "I'm a damn doctor and I know how to fix myself. I don't need any of you sitting on my damn ass and telling me what to do. Now get the hell out of my way."

"And the cat finally roars," Lina commented as Athena smirked.

I winced at the jolt of pain erupting in my head as I tried to walk away, but a hand on my cheek forced me to look at the man. Leo stood there silent as his blue eyes gawked at my wound in absolute agony. The distress of seeing me injured was stronger in him than in me. His thumb brushed away some of the blood that escaped down my cheek, his jaw tightening and his face achieving a slight shade of raging red.

Mute was what I was rendered looking at the concern in his eyes and I couldn't move. My body wouldn't permit me to. The pain magically disappeared as I maintained our eye contact that was igniting into a full blown out fire that would surely burn anything in our path. His eyes were soft, retelling our unfortunate tale that was the most beautiful one while it lasted. His irrevocable love for me, and mine for him, reflected in our eyes and encapsulated us in this bubble of warmth.

Everything and everyone was silent. Perhaps it was my brain shunning them out because the only entity I was focusing on was the man in front of me. His touch was the antidote I needed for the pain. Silly? Absolutely. Effective? Abso-fucking-lutely. Even after all these years, he was, somehow, my medicine; my cure. His mere touch had the ability to make my heart and body go haywire, and it was dangerous considering the position we were in.

I wanted to run. I wanted to throw everything away and jump into abyss, away from the forbidden emotions he was channeling in me, the warmth he was blanketing me in, the giddiness he was taming. A part of me didn't want it, the other was ruthlessly fighting for it, desperately yearning for it.

Leo slowly pulled away his touch to retrieve a handkerchief from the inside pocket of his tailored suit jacket. He placed a hand under my chin to lift my head up and began applying pressure on the wound with the other. Ours eyes stayed intact on one another with no intention to disrupt the beautiful waves of euphoria that fueled my racing heart and the adrenaline coursing through me.

But then a bark violently jerked me out of my trance and dragged me through the thick thorns that clawed into my flesh just to bring me back to reality where this was wrong. This couldn't be happening.

Breathing out, I slithered my hands up to his and slowly removed them from my face. The hurt on his face was almost palpable, but he knew it was wrong too. "Thank you," I whispered and took the bloody handkerchief from his hold to press down on the wound myself.

"Was I the only one who saw the sparks?" Rome asked so quietly that I could barely make out the words as I walked away.

"Rome, keep your dog away from me because I'm very tempted to strangle that little ugly animal," Athena spat through her teeth.

"Are you okay?" Ashton asked, walking beside me up the stairs and into the bathroom. He stood at the door while I gripped the counter and maintained pressure. Dry blood was lathered on my cheek and Leo's handkerchief was partially soaked.

"What happened?" Verona's concerned voice vibrated behind Ashton.

"Just a little cut," I smiled at her reflection in the mirror. "Nothing serious."

"Let me help," she offered and grabbed the first aid kid from the girl who brought it up.

"There's no help needed," I chuckled. "I just have to maintain pressure until the bleeding stops."

She giggled, stepping into the bathroom. "I could help wipe away the blood and let me help." Ashton gave me a weird stare as Verona placed the kit in the sink. Opening the kit, she pulled out a gauze pad and soaked it with saline solution. She gently dabbed it on my skin and cleaned the blood away slowly. "How did this happen?"

"The boys were playing and it ended up with my head hitting the wall."

She hummed and continued helping me. "How are you feeling anyways?"

"Other than this and motion sickness, I'm doing good," I replied with a little laugh.

"I was just like you when I was on my first flight," she reminisced. "Then it got better each time." A smile brushed her face as she slowly lifted my hand up to see my wound. "The bleeding has stopped." After cleaning up, she began dressing the wound with a bandage. "Have you ever been to Italy before?"

"First time actually," I stated and watched her blue eyes sparkle.

"It is beautiful. The castello is magnifico," she praised in a daze and went on in Italian while I watched her in amazement with a smile. The little girl inside her was definitely peeking through and the innocence in her eyes was divine. She stopped talking abruptly and giggled. "Sorry. You'll just love it."

"Let's see, and thank you."

"Of course."

Leo intertwined his fingers with Verona and escorted her to one of the many cars waiting for us. Men in black suits surrounded the entire private airport like little ants as I stepped down the mobile stairway right behind Soph and Wren.

"Is that a Bugatti?" Ashton gasped, awestruck by his car crush. "How rich are these people?"

"Ride with me and I'll tell you everything," Lina offered with a mischievous smirk.

Ashton stepped closer to her with a smirk of his own and I bet mama and papa rolled over in their grave. "You got it."

"Dibs on the Bugatti," Lina yelled and bolted to the car, pulling Ashton with her.

"Agera here!" Gus shouted out, grabbing my wrist and hauling me in that car's direction.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, my head!" I jerked on his hold.

He rolled his eyes and picked me up bridal style, continuing to that car. "This is going to be so fun." He placed me on my feet and watched Eros pick the Aston Martin and Wren put his hand on the Lamborghini with their women.

"Well, William Shakespaw and I are going to ride with the big guns," Rome followed Mike and Valentina with the pup as I sighed and slid into the passenger's seat while Gus slipped behind the wheel.

"Buckle up, Sirena, it's going to be bumpy," Gus winked and drove the car up next to Lina. Wren rolled up to the other side of Lina while Athena rolled up next to us. "You all are going down."

Lina laughed. "You thought, bitch. Me and Ashy here are going to win."

Ashy? I laughed to myself. "Let's see who reaches nonna first," Wren smiled wickedly, gripping the steering wheel tighter.

We all turned our heads to look at Athena who smirked like a vixen. "Let's just get this over with, shall we?"

They counted down in Italian, revving their cars up and then sped off. I held my purse tightly and my pounding head tighter. Bile was definitely threatening to rise up my pipes due to the drifts and sharp turns. The immense speed of the vehicle had my back glued to the seat and I waited for this fast and furious scene to end.

When the race started, the sun was just setting, and by the end of it, it was dark. As soon as the vehicle stopped, I opened the door and ran behind the car to vomit again. My body was exhausted to the point where I just wanted to lie down and never get up. Wobbling back to the seat, I wiped my mouth with a tissue from my purse and just sat there with the door wide open for fresh air.

"Augustus, you were saying?" Athena mocked, flipping her hair back in victory.

"Oh, shut up, Athena," Gus groaned in defeat.

"That's my girl," Eros laughed and pulled his woman into his chest by her waist to place a tender kiss on her lips. He pulled away and whispered something into her ear only for her to bite her lower lip.

"Deal," she pecked his lips and turned to face the loser Gus who even lost to his little sister.

"Well, at least I'm not the last one. Wren still isn't here." Just as he said that, Wren's Lamborghini came to a stop next to us.

"Sorry guys." Wren jumped out the car and went to the other side to open the door for Soph. "Me and my fiancé had to make a stop for a quickie."

Eros high-fived Wren as if he found the cure for cancer while the rest of us groaned in disgust. Soph then sauntered over to me with her brows frowning. "You look really sick," she commented.

"But you're the sick one, hoe," I grunted with a chuckle, holding my throbbing head.

"Sex is sex, and it feels good unless you're still a virgin," she laughed and motioned me to scoot over so that she could sit in the same seat as me. She snuggled next to me like old times, only this time around we were in the passenger seat of a car. "You smell like barf."

"No shit," I playfully elbowed her side as we both giggled. "I'm really tired and sleeping on a plane isn't fun."

"The others are here," she got out of the car and held out her hand for me. "Let's go inside and you can sleep in your room."

When I didn't budge, she hooked her arms under mine and hauled me out. "God damn," I laughed and fixed myself as she skipped over to her awaiting fiancé. After dusting myself off, my eyes finally noticed the ginormous castle standing at a distance. "What in the world?"

"What?" Lina asked as I met up with Ashton who was gawking at the palace in awe.

"A castle?" I asked.

"We're royalty?" She stated with a question at the end. "Did Leo never tell you?"

I laughed. "This is a joke, right?"

"Does it look like I'm joking?" She crossed her arms, arching a cocky brow.

I snorted as my mind traveled four years back. Leo always called it an empire, wanting to make me the queen of it. Maids bowing in his presence. Astor telling me that Leo was an actual king and referring to the family as the royals. 'Once you're crowned as the queen, you can never leave it willingly unless you die which will happen'. Astor's words pierced right through my mind. Everything from that day was as clear as the sky on a beautiful summer day. It was all making a bit sense, but fucking Game of Thrones screwed me.

"Why hasn't anyone heard of the 'royal' Bonferronis' then?

"That's the point," Athena chimed in. "Being in the public eye isn't good considering everything we do. Why do you think Leo's picture isn't on the Internet even though everyone knows he's a business tycoon?"

"Damn, did we just land in Game of Thrones," Ashton wiggled his brows with a grin.

"There's much you have to learn about the family," Lina beamed with dimples digging deep into her cheeks. "This is going to be the best two weeks of your life, but just stay clear of nonna. She's a bit of a bitch and doesn't like outsiders."

Pursing my lips together, my eyes found Leo who laid his hand out for his wife. He stood there, but she didn't get out. "What's going on?"

"Verona is going to face nonna after more than six years I think," Lina informed me with a sigh. "And you could say that Verona is scared of the old woman."

Verona reluctantly exited the car and grabbed her husband's hand tightly to hold her up. Leo softly kissed her forehead to probably reassure her before rubbing her back soothingly and escorting her to the palace. Ugh! It all sounded absolutely ridiculous. King and royalty? My ass.

Gus wrapped his arm around my shoulder and walked beside me. While he talked, all I could do was think about the woman ahead who was shakily walking in trepidation. She apparently hadn't seen the grandmother in more than six years, around the time she supposedly died from what Leo told me. Astor said that he was the one who killed her and Leo's unborn child, but she was very much alive.

"How's she alive?" I quietly asked Gus who stopped talking and looked around.

"Mike," he called out to the man striding next to his wife and Soph's father. Mike maneuvered over to us and kept up with our trudging. "She got a question."

"Yeah?"

"Uhm," I cleared mg throat and pulled Mike to the side. "How is Verona alive?"

He laughed as we continued walking. "I'm not the one you should be asking this." He looked to the couple walking right behind Federigo and Amelia. "It's not my place to tell. If you really want to know, ask Leo or Verona yourself."

"Thanks for nothing," I rolled my eyes as he laughed.

After another minute of walking on the gravel path lined by twinkling Christmas trees on the sides, we reached the large outer gates that were opened to the wide ground in front of the palace. Cars upon cars were lined everywhere, probably why we parked a mile away at the front of the path.

"Half of them are here!" Lina squealed in excitement while Gus grunted in repulsion.

"Who?" I queried.

"Cousins," Gus rolled his eyes.

We entered the palace and my poor eyes had to adjust to the immense lighting violently stabbing and playing games with my vision. The long hallway was illuminated by chandeliers upon chandeliers, large portrait paintings were mounted on the walls, but I wasn't close enough to make out the faces or even the gender for that matter.

"I feel so small. These people are so rich," Ashton admired, his eyes looking everywhere.

"But you're rich and famous," Lina smiled at him. "Be proud of that."

"Don't give him a big head," I laughed.

"I bet he has a big head where it's needed." Her mischievous brown eyes glanced at his crotch and then back at his face with a smirk.

"Wow!" Ashton laughed.

"Oh my God!" I stared at the girl, astounded by her words.

"Why didn't I die before hearing this?" Gus grimaced at his little sister's insinuation.

"Lina," Athena chuckled. "Perhaps you want to tone it down a bit."

"I'm playing," she giggled and turned around. "Here she comes."

A gorgeous woman who seemed to be in her late fifties strode down the hall with such grace and poise that it almost radiated off her. Her head was held high, her shoulders pushed back, and her long legs walking on high heels. Her blonde, shoulder-length hair was curled away from her beautiful, gracious features, and all I could do was admire the woman's beauty.

"Who's that?" I asked as Federigo embraced the woman and greeted her first.

"Nonna," Lina shrugged and watched the woman with a bit of a disapproving expression. "Meet Marsilia Drago."

(Jane Fonda as Marsilia Drago)

"Change her last name to Drogo and we got a Khaleesi on our hands," Ashton laughed as I grinned like an idiot. Game of Thrones. I was right all along.

However, that wasn't what I was expecting when it came to Leo's grandmother. From what Federigo told me about his mother-in-law, I always imagined a short, grumpy old woman with wrinkles and white hair, having a hard time walking, but I couldn't be more wrong. This woman stood as tall as me, even taller with those heels, dressing like a model with minimal wrinkles and blemishes on her face.

"Stop looking at her like that. It's plastic surgery," Lina chuckled when she caught me staring at her maternal grandmother. "No seventy-nine-year-old woman looks like that unless you believe in vampires."

"Do you?" Ashton joked.

Lina arched a brow, a sly smile tugging on the corners of her lips as she stepped closer to him. Her fingers removed an invisible lint from his t-shirt. "I believe in pink fuzzy-tailed white unicorns with huge castles on the clouds where they have endless parties and orgies."

Ashton smirked and I was about ready to throw up again. "And I believe that there are leprechauns at the ends of a rainbow with a pot of gold that they give to Santa to make toys for the kids on the nice list. Later on, it's orgy time for the elfs."

"Stop it, you two," Athena yelled in a hushed tone as Wren and Soph came over to our side while the D'Angelo parents greeted the president of Italy.

"I believe I have a gun that I'm about to shoot myself with," Gus glared at Ashton and Lina who were now laughing like idiots.

"And I believe my dead parents rolled in their grave numerous times after you two met," I scowled at Ashton and pulled him to my side. "Stop your stupid games. She's only eighteen, and Leo will kill you."

"Recently turned nineteen actually," she winked and turned to look at Marsilia.

Leo finally stepped forward and greeted his nonna with just a measly little nod as Verona tightened her hold around her husband's arm. Marsilia coldly stared at her grandson and then his wife who kept her head low in fear. She said something to Verona in Italian, but Leo immediately intervened.

He fired back, his tone agitated even though I couldn't understand a word he was saying. "We're not doing this right now, nonna, we're tired. Unlike you, we didn't fly in from Rome."

Leo walked away, taking Verona with him as Marsilia chuckled and said something in Italian to which Lina scoffed. "Nonnina, I think Leo said not right now or has your hearing finally slacked?" She walked over to her intense grandma that had a poker face on. Here I thought Federigo was intense, but Marsilia was on a whole new level. "Did you hear that or do you want me to say it a bit louder?" She raised her voice and laughed while I stared at her wide-eyed.

"Lina," Mike placed a hand on the girl's shoulder and ushered her back. "I think that's enough."

"I'm just playing, Mike," she pecked his cheek and stepped aside to let him meet the woman.

"My favorite woman," Mike smiled at Marsilia who warmly embraced him.

"My favorite boy," she beamed in return. "You look good."

"I always do, nonna."

"Do you not like your actual grandkids?" Gus teased and leaped forward, scooping Marsilia off her feet. She squealed and thumped her grandson's back, probably cursing in Italian. Her hand shot up to her racing heart as soon as Gus placed her on her feet as he laughed. "It's good to see you too, nonna."

"Discard your childish ways, Augustus. It's your brother's wedding, not a college party," she breathed out, fixing her attire before embracing Wren and then Athena.

"Well, I'm going to look for someone else. You have fun, okay?" Lina spoke very slowly, holding her grandma's hands as if she had a disability. "Don't break your old fragile bones now."

"Evelina," Amelia stared at her daughter in shock.

"Be careful, ragazza (girl)," Marsilia yanked off Lina's hold and glared at the young girl. "Leo has spoiled you. You're flying way too high. Don't make me cut off your wings now."

"Oh my, you old tigress." Lina let out a little growl and turned her hand into a claw. "I know who I take after now." she giggled and kissed Marsilia's cheek, pulling back with disgust. "Ew. I got a lot of cakey makeup in my mouth now." Everyone had horror plastered on their face at Lina's deportment while Federigo and Mike were the only ones who had a small smile dancing on their lips. "I'm just kidding. I love you, nonnina." She flashed her perfect teeth and peered at me. "Oh, and by the way," she walked in my direction and slightly pulled me forward, "This is the one and only Arie Noelle and her brother. Sit and think on that while I show them their rooms. Bye."

Marsilia's blue eyes finally gawked at me, burning me under their intense stare, and I could definitely see why Verona would be scared. Her jaw was tightly pinched together, her poker face conveying nothing. Not a single emotion escaped her as if she was the dullest person in the world. Her thin brow arched ever so slightly, and I didn't know why my heart raced. Lina hauled me into another long hallway. This place was a maze, and I knew I'd get lost if I ever wandered off alone.

"That was harsh, Lina," Gus voiced his opinion from behind us with Ashton.

"I was kidding," she rolled her eyes, pivoting into another hall and leading the way.

"You humiliated her in front of everyone," Athena sighed, walking beside me with Eros and Rome who held the dog. "She won't let you off easily."

"Why do you care?" Lina stopped in her tracks and turned around to face Athena. "Nonna doesn't even like you, but you're defending her."

"I'm not defending her. It's cute that you think I do," Athena laughed. "I'm just saying she won't go easy on you."

"She's a bitch, and I can be a bitch too. I've learned a lot from you, and I'm her granddaughter after all," Lina winked with a smirk.

"I thought I heard my little birdie." A female's voice ricocheted off the tall ceilings.

Lina grinned like a Cheshire cat and turned down the hall, heading to the source of the voice as we followed her closely behind. "Belle," she beamed and bolted in her sister's direction, climbing on her. They squealed and stumbled back, but Alicio came to the rescue and straightened the sisters.

"Wait, what?" Ashton shook his head, gaining my attention. I was puzzled by the confused look on his face, but then it hit me. She befriended him to get to me. Shit! "Is that Arabelle?"

"Yeah, I forgot to tell you that she's Leo's sister."

"What?" He raised his brows.

"Ashy," Arabelle stared at my brother wide-eyed and then at me. "What the bloody hell is going on?"

"Ashy?" Everyone, besides Athena and I, queried in unison as they came in our direction.

"Arabelle Bonferroni, not Arabelle Leon. You liar," Ashton laughed and shook his head, not too bothered by this lie. Thank God.

"Sorry," she giggled before looking at me. "It's good to see you," she said and unexpectedly wrapped her arms around me tightly. "And thank you," her British accent vibrated in my ear.

"For?" I asked when she pulled away.

"For him," she looked at Alicio who flashed me a little smile.

"Hello, Arie," his thick Irish accent rang in my ears. "How are you doing?"

I nodded and swallowed hard as my heart raced. "I'm doing alright, and so are you." A part of me believed he died after Astor shot him, but it was good to see that Arabelle was happily married to him from the massive ring on her finger.

"Do I get an introduction?" Ashton chuckled, looking at Alicio. I didn't know how to tell Ashton that Alicio is the brother of the man who ruined us.

"Uhm," I cleared my throat, "This is Alicio, Arabelle's..."

"Husband," Arabelle filled in for me with a sweet smile.

Ashton put his hand forth and shook Alicio's hand. "Ashton Noelle."

"Alicio Aguillard." Like a dumbass, he laid out his full name and I just wanted to find a hole and die.

My heart pounded savagely as Ashton turned his head to me, his brows knitted together. "Aguillard? Like Astor Aguillard?" My pale face probably answered his question causing his face to turn red in anger. "You've got to be shitting me."
