Part 4: Chapter 6 - Canine Friends
Despite the ordeal, I did not recieve many external wounds, only a few scratches. My main injury was a broken bone in my arm, which would heal in time. The doctor only gave me a healing potion and sent me on my way, with a friendly reminder not to go on "crazy missions" for some time.
When I got out of the infirmary, storm clouds were gathered in the sky. Hailbert seemed to be waiting for me as he leaned back on a wall with his arms crossed.
"Is... your dog doing better?"
The image of Ender whimpering in pain as the doctors did their best to treat his wounds came back to me.
"No... The doctors are doing the best they can, but none of them have treated a dog, much less a dog with injuries inflicted by the Enderdragon," I spoke quietly.
Suddenly, lightning flashed in the darkening sky and it began to rain. As thunder crashed, sending the people panicking to seek shelter from the rain, a great feeling of dread filled me. I stiffened, remembering Quail's warning about a thunderstorm. She warned that it would bring despair... is it referring to the Enderdragon? It's dead though...
I headed back into the infirmary as the thunderstorm continued to rage on. I sat by Ender's side, casting nervous glances at the conditions outside.
"Hey!"
Hailbert looked annoyed as a wolf entered the infirmary, soaking wet. It shook water off its pelt, which caused Hailbert's shirt to get wet.
I noticed that there were a few scars on that particular wolf, who padded up to Ender and sniffing curiously.
As Hailbert prepared to chase the wolf away, I stopped him. "Wait," I said, watching the wolf carefully.
It leaped onto the bed where Ender was sleeping and started licking him. He stirred, but did not wake up. The licking seemed to help with his injuries as he was sleeping more peacefully.
"I have heard of one of those wolves!" a nurse exclaimed. "It is said that they live in packs, with at least a leader and a healer. That wolf must be a healer!"
But why is it here? What happened to its pack? I wondered, reaching down to pat it. It flinched away from my touch at first, but it relaxed, realising that I meant no harm.
"Hello, what's your name?" I asked the wolf, patting it gently.
It let out a bark, but I understood its words. "Nice to meet you, Pancer. Thank you for helping Ender. He has been in pain for quite some time."
The wolf looked happy that it was able to help, while Hailbert looked perplexed. "You can understand it?"
"Yes. By the way, Pancer is a female," I said. "You should head back home and rest. I'll stay here and keep Ender company."
He gave me a small nod and left the infirmary. As the storm continued, I found myself falling asleep.
My dreams never cease to be confusing. I was walking in an unknown forest with thick mist surrounding it.
As I continued, I began to hear barks and growls that become more evident with each step I took.
In a blink of an eye, I found myself standing in a beautiful golden field of wheat. It stretched on for ages, seemingly peaceful, until I spotted a horde of zombies invading the land.
Those zombies looked awfully familar. Powerful iron armour protected their otherwise weak bodies from harm and they were armed with iron or diamond swords. I felt a pang of fear. Whoever they were attacking had no chance of defeating them.
A sharp yip snapped me to attention. I turned and saw a zombie in full diamond armour standing over a wolf. Without hesitation, it brought its diamond sword down. The wolf cried out in pain, crumpling to the ground.
Another wolf noticed it and howled in grief and vengeance, launching itself at the zombie.
No! You are only going to get yourself killed! I thought in alarm. It seemed that the wolf did not care, ignoring the multiple injuries that were inflicted on its body.
Unable to stand seeing such a scene, I ran towards the wheat field, brandishing my sword.
As the zombie raised its sword to deliever the killing blow, I blocked it, feeling the weight of its sword.
Mustering all my strength, I pushed the attacker back and slashed at the zombie's heavy armour. It cracked, but it did not stop me.
I lashed out with my sword again, this time, I aimed for the gap in the armour. The zombie let out a gurgling cry and quickly fleed.
I rushed to the other wolves' aid, fending off every zombie until they were dead or ran away.
A zombie called a retreat and the surviving ones scrambled to their leader's side, where they fleed from the scene.
Panting hard, I turned to the wolves I saved. There were not many left, but they looked at me gratefully.
I gave them a small nod. As I cast a quick look around the wheat field in case the zombies return, I spotted the wolf I saw first.
It was standing over a motionless body of another wolf, grieving for its fallen friend.
Finally, it stepped away from the dead wolf's body and walked towards me. I bent down and patted its bloodied fur that was once a shimmering white.
"It's okay, you are safe now," I ensured it.
It let out a bark. I nodded in response, understanding its words. "Of course you can."
That's when I felt a stinging pain on my arm. It was not the pain that stunned me, rather it was the fact that I could feel pain. Aren't I in a dream?
I stared at the landscape, blinking multiple times. It dawned on me that it felt too real to be a dream.
Great... how am I going to get back?
The wolf I befriended barked.
I stood back up and smiled. "Well, I better get going. Are you coming, Paddy?"
Paddy rushed to my side, looking happier than he was many moments ago. Grief would always be evident in his eyes, but I had faith that one day, he would overcome it.
There are only more adventures to come, my friend.
