Chapter 26// The Portal
(I didn't get an upload last week so I decided two this weekend was fair last minute. Don't assume a regular schedule with be normal though,)
"Come on Tubbo! We're going to be late!"
"I'm trying! I'm trying! You're just so fast!"
"Haha I know!" Tommy did a spin while he was running just to show off, and Tubbo rolled his eyes and he tried to run faster.
They saw the portal in sight and a large group of people around it. Someone noticed them and shouted to the others, getting everyone's attention.
"We're here!" Tubbo shouted.
"Don't go adventuring without us!" Tommy shouted, a bright smile on his face.
"You're late." Sam said with a shadow over his face as he looked down at the two. Just a guess, but he didn't seem too happy.
"Sorry, Tubbo just isn't as fast as me, I thought running would get us here on time." Tommy shrugged. It was clear Sam was about to retaliate, but Philza put his hand on his shoulder and shook his head.
"Let's just get going, no use arguing."
Sam sighed and nodded. They were wasting time anyway.
The two hermits at the portal, Grian and Iskall, stopped their conversation to pay attention to what was going on. Everyone was quiet.
"Alright everyone." Sam spoke up. "We are going to Earth, and we are going to find and capture Dream. I assume you're all prepared, because that's what the past few hours have been for, and if you want to step back, this is the only chance you will have. Once we get through that portal, there's no going back until we succeed."
It was quiet, and no one budged.
There was an unspoken sentence hanging in the air that everyone heard: "or die permanently"
Sam continued talking when no one left. Ride or die now.
"We can't show humans magic, so we should shift right now. As you all know, magic is much harder on Earth than here, so try to be careful about how you use it. Shifting to humans might make magic harder, but if the portal is near a city then it's better to do it now than later."
George rolled his eyes. "Can't show humans magic" was just a tad bit insensitive, but Sam didn't notice.
Sapnap got the message and shifted first. His horns receded into his head and his ears lost the slight tip they had, making them look rounder like a humans. It was probably the most subtle of the shifts.
Philza rolled his shoulders and his wings dissipated. Besides that, he looked exactly the same. Techno shifted back to the anime character they had met at the waterfall, with a pink braid trailing behind him. Now that he wasn't a towering pig, Wilbur had a good few inches on him, which he clearly stated by lifting his hand up from Techno's height to his. The anime boy rolled his eyes and threw Wilbur his own bag back. That swiped the smug look off his face pretty quick.
Niki was already shifted to a human, as she normally was, but Puffy next to her changed dramatically from a sheep with mismatched colored hair to a human with just brown hair and sunglasses oddly.
"Ha, I forgot I was wearing these last time." She chuckled, and winked at Niki who giggled. Niki stole the sunglasses from her face and propped them onto her own head.
"They look better on me." Niki smiled and crossed her arms.
"Can't argue with that."
Sam shifted next, only shrinking a few inches. He wore a fabric mask with a creeper face and had green hair that would probably just look dyed to a human.
"You're still taller!?" Ponk complained, looking up at his face. Sam chuckled and had a clear smirk even with the mask covering his mouth.
Ant and Fundy shifted next and somehow looked still recognizable as humans. Fundy had a white streak in his hair and kept his normal clothes, with a bit of stubble and the pen still behind his now human ear. Antfrost looked the same as the first mission and Velvet didn't hesitate to kiss his cheek quickly.
Bad was the last one that needed to shift, because the others looked human enough to pass for one on Earth.
"Get your glasses out first." Ant reminded him, as the others waited expectantly. Bad moved from one foot to the other uncomfortably, but did so shaking his head as he got out the glasses.
"Skeppy, do you want to put your box in the void before I shift to human? I probably can't do it when we get to Earth." Bad asked quietly.
"Oh uh- sure." Skeppy hesitated to pull it off, turning off the digital face as he did. When no one mentioned the blue on his face, he assumed the concealer had worked and relaxed a little.
Bad put it in the void, feeling a wave exhaustion as he did again. He shifted to human before his thoughts could make him panic more and tried to steady himself again. Just that much had absolutely worn him out, and sleeping was sounding like the best thing in the world.
"No. We don't have time to rest. We gotta catch Dream." He told himself as he stood up straighter. He saw Skeppy's eyes lingering on him before quickly turning away. An uncomfortable knot in his stomach formed as Sam continued talking.
"Safety is the first priority. We can't let Dream and the others split us up, so do not separate from the group alone." He directed it at Tommy and Tubbo, who nodded quickly.
"I have respawn crystals," Fundy spoke up. Sam looked surprised, but happy about it, until Fundy added, "Not enough for everyone."
The group glanced at each other.
"The most vulnerable are getting them." Philza said. "How many do you have, Fundy?"
He spread them out on a table near the cafe, and counted them in his head quickly.
"Six."
"Tommy and Tubbo, you each take one." Wilbur said. Nobody argued. Even though Tommy wanted to say he could hold his own, he held back and reluctantly took one from the table, putting it in his shorts pocket after checking to make sure there weren't any holes.
"Oh!" Ant remembered, and everyone looked at him. "We still have a few crystals from the first time around, that's three extra." He realized. He had given his to Velvet back at their house, but in all of the chaos of everyone arriving, he had temporarily forgotten.
Sam looked at Ponk and then at the group. "That's nine total. How about we share as many as we can in pairs. One person will hold it, but if the other is in danger we can hand them off quickly."
Everyone nodded and agreed to that.
They split into small groups to discuss who needed them the most, what the best strategies would be.
"Ant-"
"You're keeping mine, Red." Ant said.
"We're sharing it." Velvet said strictly. "I'll hold it, but if you are in the slightest bit of danger, you will take it."
"Ok." Ant smiled slightly.
"You still have mine right, Geppy?"
"Yeah Bad, we're going to share it though."
Bad looked Skeppy in the eyes, something he didn't do often like this, and saw something he swore wasn't there before. Skeppy's left eye was sparking more than normal, and almost had a tad if color swept into it. It was actually really pretty, but Bad didn't have another second to look at it before Skeppy glanced away.
"Ok muffinhead." Bad said with a slight smile. Skeppy jumped forwards and engulfed Bad into a hug. It took Bad by surprise, but he returned it, trying to be careful about touching Skeppy's bad side.
"You're taking it."
"George no-" Sapnap said sternly.
"This is up for discussion, Snap-nap." George said with his hand outstretched, the crystal in his open palm.
"Enough with the nickname, we need to be serious!" Sapnap argued.
"I am serious." George looked him dead in the eyes with a glare. "You died, Sapnap! And Dream is going to kill you again if you aren't careful, which I don't trust you to be."
"Oh so you don't trust me to be careful? You're a human George! I can't let you get hurt."
George chuckled, his voice dripping with a toxic undertone. "Me get hurt? What the fuck about you?! I can take care of myself Sapnap, human or not."
"Dream would never look me in the eyes again if you got hurt- much less if I let him hurt you! I wouldn't be able to live with myself either!" Sapnap argued back.
"Sapnap..." George sighed, and propped his goggles onto his head. "You died. And I was the one to kill you in that cave, because there was no way we could walk back with you to the portal. Dream is going to want a rematch, and if you're dumb enough to accept- which you are" He empasized "-you're going to need as much of an advantage as he has. Take the crystal."
Sapnap looked at George's palm and back into his eyes. George wasn't leaving until he took the crystal, clearly shown from the glare in his eyes.
"If you even get a scratch-" Sapnap started
"Deal." George finished. Sapnap reluctantly took it and looked up at George.
"You're taking this." Sapnap said. Before George could ask what it was, Sapnap placed a potion in his hand.
Fire res.
George just nodded and put it on his belt without another word.
Niki and Puffy planned to stick together and share one, with Puffy currently keeping hold of it. Sam had made Ponk carry one and put it in his hoodie pocket with the deal that Ponk could help with medical emergencies and hand it off to anyone who needed it.
Technoblade looked at Philza, wondering if the Crow Father should take one with concern in his eyes.
"I'll be fine mate." Philza predicted his thoughts.
"But Phil-"
"It's going to be ok." He interrupted. "And we'll get Ranboo back too." Philza said. Techno nodded.
They looked at Wilbur who seemed bored with the conversations around them.
"Do you want one?" Philza asked.
"Nah, worst case scenario I go invincible ghost-mode and just walk away."
Technoblade looked confused as ever, and wanted to ask what Wilbur was even talking about, but he had no time before Sam started to talk again.
"We have two left, who wants them?"
Everyone glanced around, before a few eyes landed on Fundy.
"What?"
"I think you should take one Fundy. " Niki said sincerely. "For all we know, Eret might target you for the data. It's safer."
The mention of Eret made the hairs on the back of his neck spike and he nodded, "Yeah ok."
"One left, what should we do with it?" Tubbo asked.
"How about Puffy carries it, and she can give it to whoever needs it in a fight as the medic?" Niki offered.
Everyone agreed it was a good idea, and an awkward silence fell over the group.
There was a loud silence blanketing the group, like everyone was sure someone else would talk, but no one did.
After a few more seconds, a voice spoke out casually.
"Ok then," Sapnap said, facing the portal and breaking the silence. "Let's go get this green bastard."
"Couldn't have said it better myself!" Tommy exclaimed, grinning forwards.
"Yeah, let's do this!"
"And find a cure!"
"And watch some bloodshed!"
"And visit Earth!"
The group walked closer to the portal, nodding to the Hermits temporarily guarding it. Grian and Iskall watched the portal and glanced towards Skeppy.
"We'll text you when we're coming back, and if anyone respawns back here." Skeppy said.
"Have fun!" Grian waved.
"And try not to die, dude." Iskall chuckled.
A few people went through at a time to not make it too crowded. The last left were Bad, Sapnap, George, Ant, Skeppy, and Velvet. Ant and Velvet held hands, and so did Skeppy and Bad.
"Take two I guess?" Skeppy chuckled. "Electric boogaloo..." He whispered to himself and gave a half hearted smile to Grian who was close enough to hear. Bad gave him an odd look but didn't question it.
"Yeah, take two." Bad whispered.
They stepped through the portal, letting the dizzy feeling engulf their senses and Bring them to Earth.
This was a Manhunt on Earth, and the hunters were prepared to win.
