Chapter 2//Serious Sam
Sam was chilling out. Literally. It was freezing cold in the snowy biome Ponk had decided to choose for their vacation, and Sam hated it. He expected warm beaches and ice cold drinks, not ice cold weather and sort-of-warm-but-not-really drinks.
"Oh come on Sam!" Ponk whined, lifting up his ski mask to look Sam in the eyes. "Just try the skies again one more time. I promise it's better once you get used to it!"
"You mean get used to falling on my face?" Sam argued, huddled up in various blankets and jackets, siping his luke-warm hot chocolate. "I'd rather just go back to the hotel and watch movies or something."
"How about if you go down the big hill with me one more time, we can stop and go back, ok?"
Sam contemplated the deal. One more face full of snow, for cuddles and movies and actually good hot chocolate for the rest of the day.
"Fine, dea-" He was starting to say, before his communicator ringing interrupted him.
"Hmm?"
Sam took a hand out of his blanket heap to grab his phone on the table next to him. Ponk looked annoyed it had stopped Sam from agreeing just yet, but let him answer it anyway.
"Hello?" Sam's asked, sitting a bit more upright to focus better.
"Sam, I came into work today and your office was ransacked. I can't find Ranboo either." It was Purpled on the other line, and he sounded like he was panicking.
"Wait what!?" Sam exclaimed, wanting to make sure he heard that correctly. Ponk raised an eyebrow and gave him an odd look at the outburst.
"Your office door was open and a bunch of papers are on the ground and Ranboo-" Purpled started again.
"Ok ok I got all of that, is anything else wrong or just the office?" Sam asked quickly. There was some moving on the other end as Sam waited for an answer.
"The staff room is open too, I'm going to go check." He said. There was more moving, sounding like Purpled was running down the hall to the staff room.
"It looks like the armory is missing a bunch of stuff too." Purple said. Sam was starting to freak out a little, but couldn't let Purpled hear that. Sam was in charge, and if showed fear, Purpled would freak out too.
"Ok, this is bad." He admitted "I'm on my way right now. Check all of the hallways and make sure everything is secure." Sam said, standing up.
"But Sam you said-" Ponk started. Sam shot him a glare and he immediately stopped talking.
There was some more rustling on the other end as Sam was getting all of the blankets and jackets he was previously heaped under, into a neater pile to grab more easily. He put the communicator back to his ear when he Heard Purpled talking again.
"Sam... someone has escaped." Purpled said quietly.
"What!?" Sam yelled, dropping anything but the communicator he was holding. Ponk stepped backwards. He didn't know what was going on, but whatever it was that made Sam yell, it couldn't be good.
"One of the barriers is down and the circuit next to it is broken." Purpled described.
"Where, which hallway?" Sam asked, trying to visualise the prison in his head. Ponk was starting to get a vague understanding that the call had to do with the prison.
"The hallway sort of near the side door. It was a hallway of unused ones and then the one at the end was being used but now it's broken and whoever was in it is gone now." Purpled said. Sam heard a shaky breath from him.
"Near the side door, unused hallway-. Side door-" He started to think, mumbling out loud so slightly. He was pacing slightly. Then it clicked.
"Dream." Sam breathed out.
"What should I do? Ranboo isn't anywhere and I'm the only one here and-" Purpled started to ramble. Sam cut him off so he couldn't freak out any more.
"Calm down Purpled, it's going to be ok. Now I need to make some quick calls as I hurry back. I'll be there soon. I promise." Sam said, thinking of something Purpled could do while he made his way back.
"You need to call Punz and he can help you make sure everything else is in order. Can you do that?" Sam asked. Punz would be able to help make sure everything else was in check still and possibly assess the situation a little better.
"Yes." Purpled said. Sam could hear the confidence building up a bit more in his voice. That was good, he was calming down.
"Ok, when he gets here you can go through the security together to see exactly what happened. If he doesn't have the keys there should be and extra set my office on the top of the cabinet you can use. The security camera is three doors down from the staff room with a sign on the door." Sam instructed, trying to be as clear as he could.
"Ok."
"I'll be there as quickly as I can. Stay calm, it's going to be ok." Sam said. He hung up the phone and Ponk was giving him a very confused look.
"Sammy what's going on?"
"I have to get back to the prison pronto."
"But you said you would go skiing!" Ponk slouched his shoulders and whined.
"Ponk," Sam said slowly, lowering his voice. "Someone escaped the prison." He said, glancing away for a split second. "I have to go back and check and get everything in order. After it's all taken care of we can come right back and I'll ski all day with you." Sam promised, feeling bad about ruining Ponk's plans, even if he hated them so far.
"Fine." Ponk said, "But I'm coming back with you to make sure this isn't a ploy to get out of skiing."
Sam rolled his eyes.
"I have to make a few calls on the way." Sam mentioned, quickly gathering his stuff and shoving what he could into the void to deal with later.
"That means I get to drive!" Ponk exclaimed, throwing his stuff both into the void and his messy suitcase rushing out to the golf cart.
"Ponk no-" Sam tried, but it was too late. Ponk was already out of the door. He sighed and grabbed his communicator. First he would dial for Badboyhalo, since he was the person to throw Dream in the prison in the first place. It seemed like he should know first. Possibly, maybe, hopefully, if Sam was lucky, Bad would know where Dream would go so they could get him secured quickly. He ran out to the very legal golf cart and Ponk was honking the horn repeatedly. Sam had an annoyed look, but got in the shotgun seat while he waited for Bad to pick up.
"Full speed Sammy?" Ponk said with a smirk. It wasn't really a question.
"Please just don't get us killed." Sam said ducking down a little and grabbing onto the side of the thing to keep himself steady.
Ponk raced over in the direction of the prison while Sam waited for the ringing on the phone to stop.
"Hello?" The other line picked up, sounding very tired.
"Hey Bad!" Sam started with a friendly tone, trying to ease into the situation.
"Sam?" Bad asked, taking a second to recognize the voice.
"Yeah, hi. Uhm, to have something to tell you that's really important. It's about the prison and-" Sam was cut short as the car swerved sharply, causing him to almost drop his phone and fall out. Luckity he held on tightly to both the cart and the communicator. He shot a glare towards Ponk who just gave an apologetic smile.
"The prison? That's funny, I wanted to talk to you about that later today actually." Bad said.
"Yeah uhm- wait what?" Sam asked. He was curious about what he wanted to talk about.
"Yeah me and some of the others are gonna catch another person today and we need to put him in prison temporarily."
"Another person? Why, what did they do?" Sam asked, suspicious of what Bad was saying. It seemed like he was just putting anyone in the prison recently.
"It'd be better to explain in person, but they're going to do something bad and we want to stop it before it happens. The muffin also chased down Fundy and broke some stuff or something..." Bad paused to yawn. "And yeah while the science guys get it figured out we gotta secure them down."
"Ok," Sam said slowly. He was confused, but he didn't have time to ask more questions right then. "Bad, I have something different to tell you."
Ponk made another serve but Sam held on better and didn't have to stop talking. Bad kept quiet to let Sam continue.
"It's about Dream," Sam took a breath before saying it. "He escaped."
No one spoke for a second. Ponk was paying attention to the road, Sam was waiting for Bad to say something, and Bad was processing what had been said.
"What." Bad said. He sounded much more awake and worried than he had before.
"One of my guards reported it a few minutes ago. You told me to put him in there in the first place, so I thought you should be the first to know. I'm on my way right now back to sort everything out." Sam explained quickly.
"He-...he escaped the prison? And is- he is on the loose?" Bad asked to confirm.
"Y-yeah Bad. I'm on my way back right now." Sam said again. Trying to reassure Bad he would be there soon and everything would be ok.
There was a pause of silence, like Bad was freaking out silently. Then he started to freak out out loud and ramble.
"What if he finds Skeppy!? Or any of the others!? I don't know if they could survive another hit with that thing and if I'm not there-!?" Bad was panicking. "What do we do!?"
"Calm down bad, I'm on my way right now as we speak."
"He might try to finish them off! If I'm not there he could try to kill any of them again! And how!? He said he would but I didn't think-"
"BAD." Ponk yelled, cutting him off. "You need to relax! We're almost there."
"Ponk? Is that you?" Bad asked, desperately trying to get his thoughts together.
"Hi! I'm driving!" Ponk said cheerily. The tone felt wrong in the situation.
Sam looked ahead quickly and saw Ponk was about to hit a pole, and quickly grabbed the wheel serving it back on track. Ponk gave a sheepish smile while Sam glared.
"Not very well." Sam mumbled.
"What do we do!? He almost killed all of us and if he escaped he could hurt more people!" Bad said.
"Bad, it's going to be ok. Take a deep breath right now."
Bad obeyed and took a shaky few breathes. By the third one he seemed ok again and so Sam kept going.
"Ok, I'm on my way back now and I will see to it personally that he is securely in the prison again. I need you to gather everyone involved and meet at the prison to discuss what to do, while I get over there. Can you do that?"
Bad took another deep breath, "Yes."
"Ok, I'm coming here as quickly as I can, I promise. Just hold on tight and stay alert."
"Ok."
"See you soon Bad." Sam said, hanging up the communicator.
"Was that it, Sam? I think it's just home stretch from here." Ponk asked, finally keeping his eyes completely on the road.
"Just one more call to an old friend. Hope he's not too excited to say hi." Sam said with a slight laugh. Ponk didn't understand and just kept focusing on the road. Sam took a deep breath and dialed the number, a little more relaxed than before.
