Travis X Katelyn

[Modern AU]

-----

Katelyn looked at her screen, sighing at the rubric her college professor had put up as an assignment. She read over the words again, seeing if she could spark any bit of inspiration from the prompt.

Your assignment is to write a script for a short movie using the Chinese proverb of The Red String of Fate. The Red String of Fate is a red string connecting two people who are destined lovers. Regardless of time, place, or circumstances, the magical cord may stretch or tangle but never break. It is located on a person's pinkie finger wrapped around and connected to its partner's pinkie.

She looked back at her various tabs of research that she had pulled up in her 'director's block.' They were supposed to start an inspiration flow in which she could write ever so efficiently. Heck, she even bought red string that was wrapped around her pinkie finger to see if she would understand the feeling of her characters.

Still, there was nothing.

"Damn it!" Katelyn said, irritated, pushing the spool of red string down from the table. The string was still attached to her right pinkie but the rest of the string unraveled, moving across the cafe floor.

She didn't notice it since she went back to her computer, still sighing. The string kept rolling until the cafe door opened with a small jingle of a bell. A feminine voice at the cash register saying the complimentary welcome to the person who walked in.

The person who walked in, looked down at his feet due to him feeling something touch the tip of it. He closed the door behind his self, picking up the red spool of thread. There was barely any string left on it which he took notice of before looking up.

The remaining thread seemed to be attached to a blue haired girl's pinkie who seemed to be angry at her computer. Knowing she would be quite irritable once he returned it, the boy decided to roll up the thread up the spool.

He rotated the spool he had, bringing him closer and closer to the girl as he intertwined his fingers in the thread. It was the least he could do for someone who looked so angry at a cafe which provided tranquility.

Once he finally got to her table, he noticed the slightest of things such as her fingers tapping on the laptop yet not on the keyboard, her breath puffing her powdery blue hair out of her pale face, and the aggravation pent up in her eyes of a matching color to her hair.

It was a couple seconds before the boy decided to tap on her shoulder, catching her attention as she sat there. She turned to him, giving him a full view of her face. To say she wasn't attractive, the boy thought, would be the stupidest statement in the world.

"Yes?" Her monotonous voice, moving her pink lips.

The boy stood there, a little lost for words. "Um..is this red string yours? Because it fell at my fe--"

Wasting no time, Katelyn stood up from her position. She tried to take the spool out of his hands, trying to untangle the mess of string he created. He started talking again which she was not interested in, "My name's Travis, by the way. But obviously your interested in--OW!"

Katelyn pulled at the piece of string stuck on his pinkie finger which wasn't budging. It was hurting him a bit in the process as well. She gave up trying on getting it off when she realized there was some glue that was still tacky on his finger. "Where did you get glue from?"

"Well, I was helping my friend out de--"

"Actually, I don't want to hear your life story," Katelyn said, looking back up at the guy. "I would like to hear you have scissors, perhaps. That would make great conversation."

Travis looked at Katelyn, giving her a sympathetic look. She sat down, slouching in her chair, suddenly getting an idea. There was this look of enlightenment on her face that Travis semi-enjoyed because he was slightly terrified. "Are you free for the rest of the day?"

Travis gave her a look. "Well, if you're asking me on a d--"

"Great! Could you just sit down right there? My name's Katelyn by the way. Anyways, I need you to just sit down in that empty chair across from me," she pointed to the empty chair adjacent to her, "And I don't care what you do, just as long as you don't detach that red string."

He didn't want to question why so he just sat down in the chair, looking at her suddenly inspired self. "So why do you need me to do this?"

Katelyn's fingers kept typing against the keyboard, making her not look up from the screen. "Well, I'm writing a script for an assignment I have to do in my film class. It's supposed to be based off the Chinese proverb that soulmates are connected with a red string on their pinkies. I need to get in the mindset of my characters."

Travis rested his elbows on the table. "Like us?"

Katelyn looked up at him waving his hand in front of her, wiggling his pinkie. She blushed slightly, looking back down at her screen. "Yeah..."

"So are we soulmates?"

She kept on writing. "In your dreams."

"Sure, Katelyn, sure."
