Laurance X Lucinda
See You Tomorrow.
Her cottage was dark, cold, and empty.
And that was exactly how she was feeling.
She sat on the ledge of her opened window, looking out upon the water that reflected the full moon in a beautiful glittering mess of light.
She closed her eyes, letting out a long sigh.
She had another freak out. Losing control of her powers.
The once beautiful wedding reception was torn, burnt, ruined.
And it was all her fault.
"Hey...." A soft voice made her open her eyes, but not turn around, she was still too upset to face anyone. Instead she held her knees tighter to her chest as she fought the urge to let all of those tears fall again. "So....I guess we'll remember this wedding for awhile," he tried to lighten the mood, the sound of his footsteps becoming ever so slightly louder as his heels scuffed against the dark wooden floors closer to where she sat. "So about what happened earlier-"
"I turned into this a long time ago," she snapped, not wanting to talk about what had happened. Not wanting to address her demons. "And don't worry, I'm used to it," her voice broke as the tears were getting harder to fight, the lump in her throat growing and crawling up, begging to be let out in a pathetic sob.
"I didn't come here to talk about what you are, you aren't a what, you're a person."
"What are you doing here?" She didn't need to ask the question, she wasn't a moron. It was obvious as to why he was there. He was there to try and cheer her up, make her smile, forgive herself for the mishap.
But the idea of forgiving herself seemed ridiculous and unlikely. Everything she did, everything she was, everywhere she went, she was a mistake. Ruining her chances of finding a stable home. She would be out of Phoenix Drop by the morning for what she had done.
"Well I wanted to check on you, make sure you're not up here sulking, which you are," again, he joked. But no matter how many sarcastic remarks were made, nothing could cheer up the mess of a witch.
"You should leave....I'll just hurt you," her arms tightened around her, "like I did to everyone else."
"You didn't hurt anyone," he sighed, taking a seat next to her. He propped one arm on a raised knee, letting the other arm dangle limp at his side, his other leg swinging off the edge.
"Don't lie, I bet there are at least five people who are getting healed by the blushing bride that I ruined the wedding of."
"Nope, no one," Laurance picked up a smooth piece of coal from the pit that was filled with them that Lucinda used sometimes instead of boiling her potions with a cauldron. He tossed the tiny coal onto the water, watching it skip four times before sinking to the bottom of the ocean floor.
"Well there must be some terrified children scarred for life," she hesitantly looked towards him, afraid to see his expression when the news was given to her. To her surprise, he remained relaxed, indifferent even.
"Nah, they thought it was cool. People just get spooked when things start flying, but once the shock wore off, they watched safely behind stuff."
"What about Kawaii~Chan? She was hiding her face in Dante's chest..." Lucinda winced as she remembered the scene of the bride hiding and shaking.
"She's a Meif'wa, they're jumpy and easily scared," he reasoned, looking at her briefly before glaring at the moon that shone bright.
"So when is Aphmau going to kick me out?"
"Never, this is Aphmau we're talking about."
Lucinda couldn't have agreed more. She knew somewhere in her heart and mind that Aphmau would never make Lucinda leave, she wasn't the kind of person to do that. But her mind was clouded by the irrational fear of having to leave the first place that she was actually accepted.
The two kept silent as they both gazed out onto the glass-like water. It was calm, reflecting the trees perfectly upside down.
"I know what it's like, you know, losing control and your emotions becoming too hard to handle," Lucinda let out a single huff of laughter, not believing him for a second.
"Yeah right," she scoffed.
"I'm a Shadow Knight, Lucinda. Our whole powers derive from our emotions," his tone grew far more serious than he had probably intended. Lucinda dared to look in his direction, and what she saw was the last thing she had expected. Tears were building, and a million moments seemed to be playing on repeat in his mind.
"I forgot..." She mumbled. Suddenly, Laurance let out a small chuckle, closing his eyes and shaking his head.
"I forget that you're a witch sometimes, too."
Suddenly they both were softly laughing.
The titles that were given to them, seemed to be what they thought made them who they were. But it wasn't. It was funny. A Shadow Knight and a witch, both forgetting for just a small moment in time, who they were.
"It's not your fault," Laurance reminded her once the laughter between the two died down.
"But it was. I lost control."
"It was out of your control, magic isn't something that's always containable. It gets out of hand. I murdered people because my magic got out of hand. We all have our demons, they may be ours, but we aren't always in control of them. It's like they're their own beings."
Lucinda kept her mouth shut, knowing that she was being petty compared to the out-of-hand things Laurance had done at his worst. After a couple minutes of listening to the waves crashing to fill the silence between the two, Laurance turned around and stood on the floor.
"I'm gonna go, but I want you to know that nobody blames you for what happened."
No response.
"I'll see you tomorrow," it wasn't a question, nor was it friendly and lighthearted. It was a demand. He wanted to see her tomorrow, to confirm the fact that she was staying in Phoenix Drop, and to help him rest easy, knowing this was not their last meeting. With a soft smile pulling at her lips, she relaxed her tense muscles and her shoulders let loose.
"See you tomorrow."
