Chapter Twenty One: Yes.

All those stupid girls are still coming to practise. Not girl #1 or Sayuri but random girls from Hinata's class and their year. Kageyama frowns at them from the court, holding the volleyball in his hands tighter than necessary.

"Kageyama!" Someone calls, bringing his attention back to practice.

Shaking his head, Kageyama turns back and focuses on the game. He does his best to ignore the cheers and the shouts from Hinata's fangirls. Kageyama doesn't really understand how one photo has made Hinata so popular. Kageyama knows that Hinata has lots of friends, as many girls as boys, but none of these girls ever came to watch practice before.

Kageyama sighs. The group is only small. Not even ten people and they aren't getting in the way of practice so it's not like he can complain about them. Besides, it would be rude to ask anyone supporting the team to stop.

It's only because he knows they're here because of Hinata. That's the sole reason they annoy him. It's enough to want them gone, though.

They don't matter, Kageyama tells himself. None of them are dating Hinata and he's pretty sure Hinata doesn't want to date any of them. They're here to support Hinata as a sportsmen. They aren't getting any closer to Hinata romantically by being here.

Kageyama is able to focus on practice a lot more after thinking about it that way. He's still not fond of the fact Hinata has fangirls, though.

Practice draws to a close as it approaches six o'clock. The smacking sound of the volleyballs halt and all that can be heard is the squeaking of shoes and a bit of chatter as the gym is tidied. Kageyama doesn't have time to think about what's about to occur in the next hour until he and Hinata have exited the school grounds and started making their way home.

This is it.

Getting answers. Asking Hinata out.

Kageyama's stomach flutters in nervous excitement and the bag on his shoulder suddenly feels ten times heavier with the extra weight of the volleyball brought for Hinata. Kageyama swallows the lump forming in his throat, glancing at Hinata.

"L-Let's sit in the park when we get there."

Hinata glances over at Kageyama and his cheeks suddenly explode with enough colour that Kageyama can see it despite the lack of light. He looks down shyly and nods. "O-Okay..."

The sun hasn't completely set yet but by the time they reach the park it'll be dark. Kageyama hopes Hinata doesn't mind or doesn't think he's trying anything. He's not. He just wants to talk. Maybe a kiss, too, if Hinata isn't opposed.

He hopes that Hinata isn't opposed to a kiss or two. Kageyama feels like it's been far too long since he's properly kissed Hinata. The kiss yesterday in the car hardly counts. That was a brush of lips, not a kiss.

When he thinks about it they haven't actually kissed each other much. The cave is the only time he can be think of when they've taken their time kissing each other. Any other kisses have been little pecks. Not that Kageyama is complaining about the soft, sweet small kisses but he misses the feeling of taking his time kissing Hinata. Kageyama didn't have long at all to get used to the feeling and the idea of kissing Hinata but he doesn't want to ever have to miss it again.

As long as Hinata wants to be his boyfriend, he won't have to miss the feeling of his lips moving against Hinata's own or the feeling of letting his fingers tangle in Hinata's hair. If they become boyfriends he'll experience the feeling of having Hinata on his lap and how it feels to pull Hinata closer by the hips more often.

Kageyama doesn't want to get too cocky right now but he's sure that Hinata will say yes. Everything they've done suggests Hinata wants him too.

Swallowing the lump that had formed once again Kageyama prays he isn't wrong.

They walk in silence. Their footsteps and the squeak of Hinata's bike echo but it isn't uncomfortable. Kageyama finds that it's quite nice, actually. His finger itch to reach out and take Hinata's hand but both of Hinata's hands are resting on the bike handles.

Kageyama is too awkward to ask to hold his hand no matter how much he wants to. It would be embarrassing to ask. He just stares at Hinata's closest hand for a few moments before he looks ahead again.

The evening is on the colder side tonight. Thankfully, it isn't so cold that it'll be uncomfortable to sit in the park.

They soon reach the park. Wordlessly, they enter and place their bags by the side of the swing set. Hinata sets his bike against side before sitting. Kageyama sits too, starting to feel a little bit awkward.

How does he start? What should he start with?

Kageyama decides it's best to start by asking what Hinata was thinking over the last two weeks. That leaves the happier (hopefully) part until after.

That still leaves him with the question of how. Does he just ask bluntly? Does he try and hint that he wants Hinata to explain? Does he demand answers?

That last option should probably be plan B. He doesn't want to risk Hinata running off and never answering anyone of his questions.

It's almost hard to believe all this occured in such a short time. The weight of it all has made the past two weeks seem like months. Horrible, lonely months without Hinata.

Kageyama's eyes flicker over to Hinata and he bites his lip. Hinata is looking down at his feet, moving them back and forth. He looks nervous but the way he's hunched over, almost curled in on himself, and the way his eyebrow at pulled together is just so cute.

Kageyama feels tense too but he had to smile at the adorable sight before him. Hinata's too cute no matter what he's doing.

"I used to be a bully." Hinata mumbles.

Kageyama blinks. Not only did he not expect Hinata to speak but what the hell does that even mean? Hinata, a bully?!

"What?"

Hinata takes a deep breath before he looks up at Kageyama. "When I was in middle school, I was friends with the wrong people and I became a bully."

Kageyama nods, finding it hard to picture but the look on Hinata's face is deadly serious.

"You're not anymore, though. That's what matters."

Hinata bites his lip. "I... When I ditched you and Sayuri... It reminded me of what I was like back then. I was... bullied into being a bully. I was made to think it was okay to hurt people and when I hurt you and Sayuri I... At first, I felt... nothing. It scared me."

Kageyama isn't sure how to respond. He just listens and let's out a soft "Oh."

It's silent for a while after that. Hinata is looking away to one side while Kageyama stares out in front of them trying to think of a way to continue to conversation.

"It scared you, right?" Kageyama asks.

Hinata glances over and nods a little. "Yeah."

"So you wanted to feel bad even though you didn't? And you said at first so... so later on you did feel bad?" Kageyama clears his throat, no got at this. He's trying to explain but it just sounds confusing to his own ears. Almost like he doesn't even know what he's trying to say himself.

Hinata seems to get it, somehow, because he nods. "I-I did feel bad. Once I started feeling bad about it, I realised why it scared me so much when I wasn't feeling anything... I went straight to Sato-sama."

"Sato-sama?" Kageyama questions.

"She... uh... She was my therapist when I was younger." He explains. Kageyama nods and gestures for Hinata to continue. "She helped me realise what the boys in middle school were doing. That they weren't my friends... They were bullying me as much as they were bullying other people. I got worried I was going to start being horrible to people again." Hinata takes a deep breath and meets Kageyama's eyes. "I don't want to go into specifics about it. It doesn't excuse the way I acted towards you and Sayuri."

Kageyama hesitates, biting his lip. Does he push it? Hinata seems a little upset about it right now and he's not sure if asking is the right thing to do.

"Why did you act that way? Why ignore us in the first place?"

Hinata swallows a lump that had formed in his throat before shrugging. "Honestly, I don't even know. I just... did. I didn't want to talk to anyone. Then after I did and you realised I had I didn't know what to do so I continued."

"You don't know?"

Hinata nods, looking down at his feet and kicking little stones. His voice is quiet and he doesn't sound happy. "So much fuss was built up that I didn't want to say anything. So more and more tension and drama built up because of it. I told Sayuri I avoided you to figure out what I want w-with us... but if I'm honest with myself I know I already knew what I wanted and didn't need to avoid you. I had no reason to at all... I just did."

Kageyama nods for what feels like the hundredth time this evening as he takes in everything Hinata had just said.

His initial reaction was to call Hinata stupid for doing something so drastic without a proper reason but when he thinks about it all it makes sense. He's had days where he just feels like ignoring everyone and being alone. No one makes a fuss of it because it just fits with his personality. Hinata, however, is like a small of sunshine and energy and is always talking so when he has a day where he feels like ignoring everyone people are going to notice and wonder what's wrong.

Kageyama felt like something was off within the first few days before realising Hinata was ignoring him. He didn't stop and consider that maybe Hinata just felt like being alone for a while. He jumped straight to the conclusion that something must be wrong.

Once everyone was making a huge fuss over Hinata feeling like being a little asocial it's no wonder Hinata felt too awkward to admit all that was worrying them was him wanting to be alone for a while.

"I get it." Kageyama replies, eventually.

"You do?"

"Yeah... You didn't feel like talking or being around people so you kept to yourself and because you're normally hyper and chatty, people worried. You weren't acting like a bully, Hinata. You just wanted some time to yourself. There isn't anything wrong with that."

"Yeah? And because they were worrying, I didn't want to admit nothing was wrong and I didn't want to be around people because they might get annoyed... I... You sure thats not mean?"

Kageyama nods and gives Hinata a small smile.

Hinata's eyes widen and he looks away quickly. "I... Um... Are you annoyed that I ignored you for no reason?"

"You had a reason."

"I did?" Hinata asks, frowning in confusion.

"You felt like being alone."

"That's not a good reason."

"How you feel isn't a good reason? Hinata, if you feel like being alone and ignoring everyone, you are allowed to ignore everyone and be alone."

Hinata looks down, considering Kageyama's words. "I suppose this is all a little anticlimatic."

Kageyama laughs at that and nods. "Definitely."

Hinata grins and starts to laug too. He kicks off and begins to swing, still chuckling happily. Kageyama smiles widely and watches before he also starts to swing.

They swing for some time, laughing and talking about everything and nothing at all.

Hinata's right. It feels anticlimatic but there's no need to go on about it. He's pretty sure that Hinata will agree that they need to move on now. Focus on what comes next for them.

It hurt to be ignored by Hinata but Kageyama meant what he said. If Hinata feels he needs to take some time for himself away from everyone he has every right to.

"You're an idiot for not just telling me you needed some time. If it happens again, just tell me and I'll back off. That's all I'm going to say about it all." Kageyama murmurs when they slow their swinging to just rocking back and forth.

Hinata nods. "Okay. I promise."

Kageyama smiles a little before he jumps off the swing and goes to his bag. "I have something for you."

Hinata raises an eyebrow and he stops swinging. "What is it? It isn't my birthday."

Kageyama chuckles before pausing. "When is your birthday? I don't even know."

"21st June. When is yours?" Hinata smiles.

"22nd December."

Hinata nods and stands up, glancing at the bag in curiosity. "Why have you got me a present?"

Kageyama takes a deep breath. Here goes everything.

"Well, I... I wanted to get you a present." Kageyama murmurs, not meeting Hinata's eyes. He's sure that his blush is giving away what's coming next. "I went through a few scenarios and decided that I wanted to give you a present when I ask you to be my boyfriend." Kageyama says the words in a rush before holding his breath.

It's silent for a few moments but it feels like minutes to Kageyama. He pecks up and Hinata is stood there with a blush much like him but he's grinning widely.

When Kageyama looks up, Hinata seems to grin even more. "Well, ask me and give the present to me."

Hinata's smile and words give Kageyama confidence. They've kissed a number of times and are obviously interested in each other (and Hinata hasn't run away). Hinata is most likely going to say yes. There's no evidence to suggest that Kageyama should be as nervous as he feels.

Kageyama straightens and pulls the volleyball out of his bag, holding it out to Hinata.

"Hinata, will you be go out with me?!" Kageyama asks, almost shouting it, and his voice shakes a bit with the nerves he still has despite his confidence about Hinata's answer.

Kageyama watches as Hinata's face lights up even more - how is it possible to be so cute?! - and he reaches out, placing his hands on the ball. He nods, making a soft sound that sounds like yes. He's smiling so much that his eyes are closed and he laughs a little.

Kageyama's hands fall from the ball and he steps forward, placing his hands on Hinata's shoulders and leaning forward to kiss him. It's a little bit of a stretch with a volleyball in the middle of them but Kageyama can't complain much.

Hinata said yes. They're officially together.

When Kageyama steps back Hinata grins again before his eyes fall down to the volleyball in his hands. He studies it, running his hands over it and throwing it up once or twice to see how it feels.

"It's perfect, Kageyama! Will you give me a toss?"

Kageyama nods eagerly. "Yes!"
