Chapter Thirteen: Disappointment.
The next few days leave Kageyama confused and hurt enough for him to actually admit to himself that he's hurt. Emotional pain was something he can usually deal with but this... this felt like being shunned by his former team and like losing to Aoba Josai combined. It's horrible. He doesn't understand anything.
On Monday, everything had been perfect. After school, he went out and brought a volleyball for Hinata and he set out a mental plan as to how he'd ask Hinata to be his boyfriend.
So, on Tuesday, he asked Hinata to come round his house where he planned to give Hinata the volleyball and ask that nerve wracking question. Hinata said that he was busy and couldn't make it that week which... was fine. Kageyama could wait.
Then, Hinata disappeared at lunch time. It wasn't until Wednesday that Kageyama heard from Tsukishima, Tsukishima, that Hinata was supposedly hanging around with a bunch of girls.
It's Thursday that Noya dropped a magazine in his lap after it's once again made clear Hinata isn't eating with them.
That's where he is now. Sat behind the gym with all the team, minus Hinata, staring at a dumb magazine with a dumb article about modelling with a snapshot of Hinata being true to his dumbass nature.
Kageyama quickly comes up with two explanations.
One: Hinata lied about being a model. Or Two: Somehow a picture taken on that say ended up with the models pictures.
Theory number two seemed most likely. After getting passed the why of picture being there, Kageyama realises that this must be the reason that Hinata is getting so much attention.
It's not the fact Hinata has lots of girls around him that hurts. Or even the fact that Hinata isn't eating with him at lunch. The thing that hurts is how the shorter boy seems to have left what happened between them over the weekend at his grandma's house. Beyond blushing a little more than usual, Hinata is acting completely normal around him. Well, except the whole hanging around with girls thing. Which is a big thing.
Kageyama has to stop himself from sighing. Perhaps his assumption that Hinata likes him as much as he likes Hinata isn't anywhere near accurate.
His chest aches. He feels ill. If it weren't for practice later, he might've wanted to go home. Curl up in bed and maybe ask his mum for advice - she seems to not mind the idea of him and Hinata being more than friends, after all.
"Does Hinata know that this is there?" He asks Noya when he pushes down all the horrible feelings that are slowly wrapping themselves around his heart.
The boy stood in front of Kageyama raises an eyebrow. "Of course he does. He's a model!"
Kageyama allows himself a small chuckle before he shakes his head, ignoring the odd looks he reserves for laughing. "No, he isn't. Sayuri must have mixed up her photos with the photographers. She's a model, Hinata was there to offer support."
"How'd ya know?" Tanaka asks, seeming deflated after being told he couldn't tease Hinata about being a model. The same could be said of Noya.
"Because the shoot was by my grandmother's house - where I spent the long weekend."
Nishninoya nods and takes back the magazine. His eyes then light up and his head snaps up so he's meeting Kageyama's eye. "So is this Sayuri the cute girl that Hinata told us about?" He asks.
Tanaka stands and eagerly leans forward, both he and Noya waiting for his reply.
Kageyama just shrugs. "I'm not sure." He lies.
They slump but nod. Thankfully the conversation takes a different turn soon and Kageyama leans back against the wall of the gym and begins to eat his lunch.
It's almost the end of their lunch break when Tsukiyama speaks up.
"It seems one finally took Hinata's fancy." He says and gestures towards two retreating figures.
One obviously Hinata - no one else in the school is that short and has hair like that. Then the other... Girl #1. Kageyama recognises her almost immediately and his eyes widen, wondering just what the hell he's doing with her.
All the sadness from earlier seems to morph into anger at the thought of Hinata being with that girl. Not only because it's clear that she wants to be his girlfriend but also because this confirms that Hinata isn't himself. He wouldn't hurt Sayuri like this...
Kageyama wasn't even aware that he'd begun to think of Sayuri as more than some girl until that moment. He despises the idea of Hinata hurting her feelings - he knows that Hinata would never want to hurt his friend, too. Sayuri is a nice girl and Hinata would be an idiot to choose Girl #1 over her. There's more to this than Kageyama knows, he's sure but that doesn't stop him being angry at Hinata. He doesn't want to see anyone of them - himself, Hinata and Sayuri - be upset.
"Isn't that the girl that slapped him last week?" Asahi asks uncertainly, breaking Kageyama from his thoughts.
Daichi nods. "Yes, it is."
"Seems he reconsidered being more than friends. Ha!" Tanaka laughs and, for some reason beyond Kageyama, Noya high fives him.
Kageyama huffs and stands, leaving his stuff. All eyes are on him as he stares after Hinata. He looks almost as pissed off as he did when Hinata hit him with a serve.
"Whoa! What's with the scary look?" Tanka asks.
Kageyama doesn't reply, he just starts to head towards Hinata. Before he knows it, he's started to run to catch up to them. When he reaches the pair, he doesn't hesitate to grab Hinata by the collar.
The smaller boy yelps and the girl starts to yell at him.
"Let Shoyo go, Kageyama-kun!" She demands.
Kageyama glares at her and she immediately shuts up, apparently realising that he's not in the mood to be argued with. In some ways, he's glad that he looks scary. Even if it is annoying most of the time.
His glare then moves down to the squirming Hinata. When their eyes meet, Hinata freezes.
"What the hell are you doing?" He asks, spitting the words.
Voices of the teams can be heard in the background. Suga, Daichi, Noya and Tanka at the least are approaching them. Suga and Daichi letting Kageyama to calm down while Noya and Tanka are asking what's going on because they're definitely missing something.
Hinata doesn't reply, just stares up at Kageyama. Frozen with fear, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights.
Kageyama sighs. "Tch. Dumbass, what about Sayuri? I thought you'd at least consider how she feels about this." He says, not needing to say anything about himself. He can tell by the way Hinata winces that he knows Kageyama isn't just talking about Sayuri.
When he gets no reply, Kageyama releases Hinata. The short boy ends up falling to the ground and he goes to yell at Kageyama but the look on his friend's face changes his mind.
Kageyama looks ready to kill. All the confusion, all the angry and all the hurt he's feeling is building up. He hates seeing Hinata acting so unlike himself. Never before has he seen Hinata do anything that may hurt any of his friends.
"Stop this!" Suga orders when he's close enough. He picks Hinata up off the floor and gives Kageyama a stern look. "It's none of your business, Kageyama. Please stop making a scene."
Kageyama just stares at Hinata. He doesn't argue with Suga, understanding how outrageous he must look right now without knowing any context. He doesn't blame his teammates for thinking he's out of line. He's not happy about it either, though.
Sighing for what must be the twentieth time today, Kageyama turns away from the group and heads back to where he left his things. He makes sure to send Hinata a disappointed look as he leaves.
The orange haired boy looks down at his feet, apparently still himself enough to be ashamed of causing his friends any hurt.
As he's walking away, Kageyama hears Hinata making a lousy excuse about needing to go before he says "Come on, Miko." and walks off with girl #1 before anyone says anything in reply.
Kageyama wasn't sure he could be more disappointed. Later that day when Hinata doesn't turn up for practice, though, he realised he was wrong. His anger and disappointment only grow but he forces himself to remain calm and seem unaffected on the outside.
Hurting his friends is one thing but not turning up to to practice... It's like Hinata has become a new person over night.
Kageyama is determined to find out exactly what's going on.
