Chapter Ten: Exploring.
Cave exploration, Kageyama decides, isn't too bad. In fact, it's quite fun to search new places that perhaps only a few handfuls of people have ever seen.
The only thing he didn't enjoy much was the way his stomach would go funny and he'd get the urge to smile whenever Hinata smiles or laughs at something. It only seemed to have started today, the urge to smile around him, but Kageyama would be lying to himself if he tried to claim there hadn't been times when he'd thought something the shorter boy did was cute or times where he's wanted to have all of Hinata's attention.
It's sometime in the mid-afternoon when Kageyama decides that he's got a crush on Hinata.
Nothing special had happened. They'd just made their way into a cave and climbed up on to a ledge to sit on so they weren't in the water. Hinata was looking around the cave admiring it and Kageyama just knew in that moment that none of these feelings were because he wanted to be Hinata's friend. No, these feelings are because he wants to be more than Hinata's friend.
Of course, he still thinks that the boy is a dumbass loud-mouth but he's a very cute dumbass loud-mouth that Kageyama would be interested in kissing.
In some ways, Kageyama feels like he's changed over night. Like he woke up and suddenly fancies his best friend. It probably seems that way but deep down, he knows that he's most likely been denying this crush for some.time. After all, he did have that dream and he acknowledges now that what he was feeling was jealous everytime he laid eyes on girl #1.
It is sudden and that scares him. He doesn't let that show, though. He can't let Hinata know that he's crushing on him.
As sappy as it is, their friendship does.mean a lot to him and he doesn't want to ruin that with awkwardness. He's barely accepted all this himself so telling Hinata is in the far, far, far future if it's in the future at all.
Pushing aside his thoughts, Kageyama dives back into the water. Hinata is just as restless as ever and so they've been swimming from small cave to small cave all morning and for the best part of the afternoon too.
"Wah! Kageyama, look!" Hinata yells, splashing about.
"Hey! Idiot, stop splashing me!" Kageyama growls. Hinata stops and so Kageyama asks "What is it I'm meant to be looking at?"
Hinata points towards what looks like a large rock. Kageyama is about to ask what the idiot is looking at but then he sees the small opening at the water's surface.
"We have to go explore it!" Hinata beams.
"It could be a deadend that means we drown." Kageyama points out as they make their way towards the rock.
Hinata considers Kageyama's words and bites his lip. His eyes then light up as he gets an idea and he's smiling again. "Let's get a rope! We'll tie it around my waist and if I want to be pulled back out, I'll tug twice and if it's safe for you to come through I'll tug once."
Kageyama sighs. "It would make more sense for me to go through. I swim faster."
"I can hold my breath for longer." Hinata counters.
They glare at each other for nearly a full minute before Kageyama sighs. "Fine. Don't blame me if you drown."
Hinata cheers, pleased to have won this.
They return to the house to find some rope. In the end they manage to find some in a cupboard that appeared to have lots of random things inside, ranging from manga to an ironing board.
Seeing as Hinata was oh so eager to go into the cave, Kageyama makes him carry it when they swim back to the rock. It wasn't too far but Hinara seemed to have a little bit of trouble carrying all the rope.
When they get there they work together to make sure the rope is securely about Hinata. Kageyama ignores the fact that he blushes as he wraps the rope around Hinata's waist, his fingers brushing the boy's hip. Hinata doesn't look at him either but does squirm slightly and Kageyama makes a mental note to investigate if Hinata is ticklish later when the possible of drowning is 0%.
"Right. You shouldn't slip out of it. Ready?" Kageyama asks.
Hinata nods and he gives Kageyama a thumbs up.
"Remember, two for pull me back. One for it's safe for you to come through."
Kageyama nods and holds the rope. Hinata glances over to check he has it before he takes a deep breath and dives under the water.
It's silent except for the sound of Kageyama breathing and the slight rubbing sound of the rope slipping through Kageyama's fingers as Hinata goes further. There's plenty of rope but a part of Kageyana is worrying that Hinata is going quite far into the cave.
The rope stops moving after a minute. It felt like an entirnity. Kageyama waits nervously for any tugs to the rope.
Each second feels like forever.
Finally, the rope is tugged on. Just once. Kageyama nods to himself before he releases the rope and prepares himself.
He takes in a large breath of air before he dives under much like Hinata had.
The way in is completely under water with some twists and turns. Kageyama makes sure he can always see the rope ahead as he swims further into the cave.
When he comes up out of the water and into the cave, Kageyama understands why it took Hinata so long to tug on the rope.
It's absolutely breath taking. The little bit of light that comes through the water has elimnated the whole cave, making the walls look like they've taken on a blue glow.
"Wow..." Kageyama mumbles, spinning around slowly in a circle to look all around the cave.
It isn't huge but it's a good size. There are rocks to one side, opposite the entrance to this part of the cave. Hinata is sat there, watching Kageyama as he takes in the sight.
"It's great, isn't it, Kageyama?"
He nods and looks to Hinata. His hair is flattened, dripping wet and he's grinning at Kageyama, knees to his chest and rope still around his waist.
Kageyama swims over to the rocks as Hinata unties the rope, pulling some of it further in so the weight of it while it sits on the rock means the water won't carry it away.
Kageyama sits beside Hinata andleans back against one of the rocks, getting comfortable. He had a feeling they'd be staying in this cave for some time.
"Can I come with you to your grandma's next time you come?" Hinata asks suddenly.
Kageyama's eyes widen and his head snaps in Hinata's direction, shocked by the question. Isn't Hinata scared of him or something like that? He doesn't act like he wants to spend more time with Kageyama than necessary.
"Um." Kageyama replies, dumbly. "Yeah, of course. Mum said you're always welcome and my grandma seems to like you."
Hinata nods to.himself, smiling softly. "Great. I like it here and I like your family." His eyes light up, then, the way they do when he has an idea. "Oh! You'll have to come with my family when we go away next."
"You'd want me to?" Kageyama asks, confused.
Hinata frowns and looks over at the other. "Well, duh, you are my best friend."
Kageyama smiles at that. Him smiling causes Hinata to smile. After a moment or two, they realise that they're just sat there smiling at each other and staring so they quickly turn away, cheeks red.
They sat silent for some time before Hinata suddenly turns to Kageyama and asks "You know yesterday?"
"I am aware that there was a yesterday, yes." Kageyama smirks.
Hinata narrows his eyes before he just let's the sarcasm go for now. "Were you joking? You weren't just kidding about not being sure, were you?"
Kageyama sighs, wanting to avoid this subject. At the same time, though, he's pleased it was brought up.
"I wasn't joking, Hinata. I'm not sure."
"You should go on a date with a girl. You could go out with Sayuri. She hasn't had a date in a while and it might boost her confidence if an attractive guy asks her out." Hinata says, on the verge of just rambling to himself rather than actually speaking to Kageyama.
"Attractive?"
Hinata snorts. "You've looked in a mirror and you'd be blind to not see the way girl make heart eyes at you."
Kageyama frowns at that. "I've never had any confessions."
"That doesn't mean there aren't girls that like you." Hinata points out.
"Does Sayuri 'like' me?" He makes sure to sure his fingers as quotation marks as he says "like".
"No. She likes someone else. So it shouldn't be a big deal if you two go on a da-"
Kageyama shakes his head and firmly says "No."
Hinata whines and pouts. "Awhh, why?"
"Because I don't want to go on a date with her and even if she doesn't want to date me, it isn't far to make her think I want to date her."
Hinata considers the words before nodding. "You're right. But if you don't try to date people how will you ever know if you like girls or boys?"
Kageyama shrugs. "I guess I'll just wait and see."
Hinata stares at him, his face warpped as he focuses. Kageyama is actually a little scared that too much thinking might hurt the idiot.
Suddenly, a bright grin overtakes Hinata's face.
"You" he exclaims, pointing at Kageyama "like someone!"
"Do not!" Kageyama counters, far too quickly.
"Oh my God, you so do! It's a guy, isn't it? Is it someone on the team? From school? Do I-"
Kageyama kisses him just to shut him up.
