Chapter Nineteen: Friends.
A/N: I'm thinking about doing a competition for this story. One-shots and maybe fan art. Anyone interested? For prizes I'm thinking haikyuu!! merch. Maybe stickers for runners up and a top/hoodie or maybe even a plushie for first place. Any other ideas are welcome... If anyone is even interested.
Update: Competition is here https://www.wattpad.com/story/65014948-mine-competition-details

Kageyama looks at Sayuri. She's twisted round in her seat, watching him closely for his reaction. He's about to open his mouth and ask what the fucking hell is going on when he remembers that Sayuri's dad is in the car too.
Giving a tight smile, Kageyama pushes Hinata's leg out of his way and sits down, buckling up. Sayuri's father grins and sets off, not noticing any tension that Kageyama's body holds.
Kageyama pulls out his phone and debates whether or not to text Sayuri and ask what the hell Hinata is doing here. He doesn't want to come across as rude, however, and puts his phone away to talk to Sayuri's father as he asks questions. He's proud of what his daughter does, of course, but he's also a big sports fan and talks to Kageyama about volleyball for almost the entire car journey.
Hinata remains asleep. Kageyama's rather glad about that. The loudmouth isn't likely to be able to mask his reaction to seeing Kageyama. He's too slow for it to even occur to him that he should remain calm until after Sayuri's dad is worrying about what's going on between them. Then again, maybe Sayuri warned Hinata he'd be here. He doubts it, though.
Besides not being sure what Sayuri's aim is or why the on Earth Hinata seems to have started talking to her again, the car journey is pleasant. The conversation is kept light and friendly and it never turns awkward. A good start to what Kageyama hopes will be a good day out with friends.
Glancing at the sleeping boy beside him Kageyama wonders what the day will be like. It can easily go either way. It depends how Hinata reacts.
A lot has happened but Kageyama truly just doesn't have the energy to argue with Hinata about all this. Hinata, for some reason, abandoned them. That's a fact. A fact that Kageyama will get over if it means getting his friend back and maybe, possibly advancing from there. All this confusion and drama hasn't affect his feelings for the dumbass.
When they arrive, Sayuri and her father climb out of the car. Sayuri is walking around the car to wake Hinata when she's tackled into a hug by a rather bubbly model. Sayuri smiles politely and chats to her.
With wide eyes, he stares at she walks away. Kageyama looks to her father before scalding himself. Can't expect him to wake Hinata. He's got no idea how familiar they are. Besides, Kageyama is supposed to be Hinata's best friend. Imagine the weird look he'd get for not being comfortable waking him up.
Taking a deep breath, Kageyama's eyes land on Hinata. Since having his leg moved so Kageyama could sit he's bunched himself up by the window, cheek on the glass as he snores. His hair is messier than usual and his mouth is open, a bit of drool sliding down from the corner.
It shouldn't be cute. But it is. At least, it is to Kageyama. The setter can feel himself blushing but dismisses it as he reaches out to shake Hinata's shoulder.
"Hey, dumbass!"
Hinata grumbles as he's shook and tries to curl further inwards as he presses to the window.
Kageyama lets out a sigh. Stop thinking he's cute. He isn't cute. He looks like a drooling, stubborn child. Not. Cute.
Trying again, Kageyama shakes him more urgently. He needs to get up.
"Hinata." Kageyama says sternly.
"Hah?..." Hinata mumbles, shifting as he gradually wakes up.
He blinks as he sits up, rubbing his eyes. He glances at Kageyama before closing his eyes and yawning. Hinata stretches and rolls his shoulders before freezing, realising who is beside him.
Hinata opens his eyes and looks at Kageyama again. His eyes grow to an almost comical size. He stares, body and mind seeming to shut down for a moment.
Sayuri definitely didn't warn Hinata.
"I-I... What?" Hinata asks, a whole lot of different emotions briefly flicker across his features as he tries to figure this out.
"Sayuri invited me to the shoot." Kageyama says, not wanting to blame Sayuri but definitely and completely blaming her.
Hinata nods before mumbling "M-Me too."
"Obviously." Kageyama rolls his eyes.
It falls silent in the cat as both of them stare at each other and realise that today is the day that they'll discuss this. Or, at least, it's the day where they're going to start talking again.
"I-"
Kageyama is cut off by Hinata surging towards him. At first, Kageyama is preparing himself to push the idiot off of him. He's sure that Hinata is trying to hit him. When he feels lips on his own, however, he freezes.
They're only there briefly. It's barely a kiss. It isn't that that's significant, though. It's the fact Hinata did it at all. It means... Well, it means there's a chance. For them.
Before Kageyama can collect himself, Hinata scrambles out of the car and after Sayuri and her father.
Not seeing what more he can do, Kageyama sighs and follows them.
As he walks after them, he shakes himself a little. While Sayuri is clearly helping - trying to - today isn't about Hinata or Kageyama. It's about Sayuri. They're both here to support their friend.
Once he's caught up, Kageyama flashes a smile at Sayuri. It isn't long before everything is kicking off and her dad leaves, bidding them farewell until later on when he picks them all up.
Sayuri is always one of the last models to go as they go in Alphabetical order. The three of them sit on a nearby bench, chatting casually. It's a little awkward but not too bad. Kageyama and Hinata occasionally glance at one another but never actually make direct conversation with each other.
When Sayuri is called to go to have her hair and make-up done, an awkwardness settles over them. Kageyama and Hinata glance at each other at the same moment, eyes meeting. Both look away quickly, pretending that they didn't feel a thing in that brief moments that their eyes had met.
"So, um-"
Kageyama is cut off by a shrill voice. "Hiiiiinataaaa-chan!"
Both boys look up towards the voice just as a girl in a tight top and short skirt launches herself at Hinata, hugging him and practically suffocating him with her large boobs. Kageyama frowns. It was awkward but he wants the time alone with Hinata. They have things to discuss.
"Uh, hey, um..." Hinata trails off.
Kageyama smirks as he realises that Hinata can't even remember this girls name. Not that he wanted to be too judgemental but she looks like the type that runs the school and is always trying to get all the cute boys to fall for her, the gorgeous model. Kageyama looks down at his lap, feeling slightly bad for thinking that way. These are the people Sayuri works with. Sayuri is proof that not all models think they're gorgeous. It's just a stereotype.
The girl reintroduces herself - well, Kageyama assumes she does but he's hardly listening. She sits herself down beside Hinata and gets chatting to him.
"So, Hinata-chan, do you have a girlfriend?" She asks, hugging his arm and pressing her chest against his arm as she smiles innocently.
Kageyama's guilt at judging her leaves him quickly. He may do his best not to judge but he can't stop himself feeling jealous. Things between him and Hinata are so fragile at the moment that the fear of losing him is completely justifiable.
The girl glances at Kageyama, who must be glaring, before her eyes snap back to Hinata and she smiles wider. "Well?" She prompts.
"Um. No... I don't have a girlfriend." Hinata mumbles, glancing down at where she's rubbing her chest on his arm.
Is that a look of discomfort? Kageyama wonders. Or is he enjoying the view?
"Oooh. That's good. Are you busy on Friday?" She asks. She doesn't beat around the bush, does she?
Kageyama doesn't understand why Hinata has to be so desirable to women. Is it how cute he is? Is it the oddly appealing wild orange hair? His smile? Eyes? Kageyama's eyes flicker over Hinata and he can't find a flaw in the areas he's mentioned. It's the whole of him that's appealing to people. Mainly women.
Hinata's eyes flicker towards him before he gives the girl a shy smile. "Actually, I'm busy all this week. Kageyama and I have to do something extra practice."
They don't. Well, they do probably need to do some more practice together after not talking but they haven't planned for it.
Kageyama has to hide his smirk. Hinata doesn't want her.
"Oh..." She looks back to Kageyama and is about to say more when she's shouted for.
She pouts at Hinata before kissing his cheek. "I'll see you soon, then, Hinata-chan. I'll give Sayuri my number to give to you. Call me!"
Hinata doesn't reply, just waves as she leaves.
"All these girls will be the death of me. They don't leave me alone." Hinata complains, letting his head fall on the bench,
Kageyama snickers. "It's your own fault, dumbass. You let them think they have a chance."
"I do not!" Hinata protests, looking up at glaring at his setter. "They just assume I'm interested!"
Kageyama pauses for a moment before asking "And you're not?"
Hinata falls silent too, looking at Kageyama. His cheeks slowly turn red and he looks away, down at the floor. Kageyama smirks. No, Hinata isn't interested in any of them.
"Anyway!" Hinata yells suddenly, standing up. He looks around before talking at a normal volume. "Sayuri will nearly be done with hair and make-up. She'll be starting to get nervous. We should go."
Kageyama grows a little more serious and nods, walking with Hinata towards the trailer being used for make-up and hair and if they're walking closer than most people normally do neither decide to change that. And when Hinata's hand brushes Kageyama's neither see any reason to mention it.
Hinata has got a lot of explaining to do, that's for sure. Kageyama glances at the shorter, blushing boy and smiles. But that can all wait for now.
