"In the Quiet"

Yamaguchi had always been a good listener. He wasn't so great about the advice part but he listened. His mother used use to always say, "You have the ears of a fox."

He wasn't superhuman like Hinata, he was just used to being quiet and listening. His hearing just became better. He prefered the quiet, like how in games the whistle before the serve always startled him until he realized that he could take his time and just feel the quiet. In the quiet he felt most at ease. That's why he and Tsukki did well together, they didn't need to talk. Tsukki knew that Yamaguchi had great hearing and would often ask him what he heard about the other team's players when they practiced in the court before the game. Yama was able to hear before the game even started if a player had a weak knee or they had something up their sleeve. Tsukki could then be ready and put his block to use or let the others know. Yamaguchi was afraid that he would be stepping on his senpai's toes if he acted all high and mighty so he left it up to Tsukki to tell them. They had been doing this since the practice match against Blue Castle.

Volleyball wasn't the only time that he overheard things. Yamaguchi knew a lot more about each player. He knew that Daichi's father had been drinking again. Suga's parents were talking about getting a dog. Tanaka was interrogating Ennoshita about his rumored girlfriend who he swears is just a rumour. Nishinoya and Asashi had late night study sessions nearly every night cause Noya was at risk of failing two classes. Coach Ukai was considering giving up smoking because he wanted to be a better example. Hinata and Kageyama had confessed to each other and were at the early stages of dating even if they didn't know it.

Yamaguchi didn't ever tell anyone about others. He kept it to himself. He wasn't the type to blackmail. He mostly just thought about how lucky he was to not be dealing with the hardships many of his teammates faced. He didn't care that much about Kageyama and Hinata dating. If they were happy then that was good. They each had tough lives. Thinking about it now, they had never talked about it with each other but with others such as Sugawara. Kageyama barely ever talked about himself but when he did open up, Yamaguchi could tell that Kageyama was actually good guy. Hinata was incredibly kind and hardworking. He wasn't stupid as people thought, he just throws himself into everything so quickly.

Yamaguchi was walking to after school practice and was near the gym. He began to think about Kageyama and Hinata. Yamaguchi didn't care if they were gay or straight. Why should it matter? The only problem he had with it was that it caused him to think about his own romantic interest. He had thought girls were cute but dating them seemed daunting. Was he gay? He didn't like guys except for his team. Maybe ace? He liked Tsukki most. Yamaguchi stopped. He let the words roll around in his head. I like Tsukki most. That shouldn't of been a thought to stop him. It was rational. Tsukki had been his best friend since middle school, his only friend.

Tsukkishima had been walking next to Yamaguchi and took two steps before he stopped to look back at Yama. Yamaguchi was weird so he wasn't surprised that much at this behavior. He patiently waited for him to come out of his focused daze.
Yamaguchi heard the crunch of gravel cease and realized that Tsukki had stopped. It was so natural to always be with him that he had almost forgotten that they were walking to practice together like they did every day. They generally spent the short walk in silence because the gym would be filled with yelling from Hinata, Noya, and Tanaka.

Yamaguchi looked up at Tsukki's bored gaze. "S-sorry," Yama said and started walking again. "Hm," was Tsukki's reply and they both walked into the gym.

Yamaguchi picked up more info at practice. Apparently Kageyama had become closer with Sayuri and that is his first friend outside of volleyball and first female friend. Suga's family ended up getting a cat. Noya's grades have gone up and he quietly complained to Akashi about some kind of bruise on his chest. Daichi had confronted his father. Tanaka apparently saw a lot of busty women over the weekend when he went to visit his sister while she had friends over. (Everyone knew this because he was practically floating and told everyone.)

Yamaguchi began to notice how great Tsukki looked when he blocked. He was so strong and cool. Watching the sweat roll down his neck gave Yama shivers. Tsukki with a determined expression was attractive. When he showed interest in anything it excited Yamaguchi. When Yamaguchi realized he was staring, he blushed and tried to get on with practicing his serve with little success.

Practice ended, Yamaguchi and Tsukki were walking home like usual. Yamaguchi had been unfocused the entire time, Tsukki had noticed. Tsukki had become very in tune with Yamaguchi since high school began. He knew that something was bothering Yamaguchi, and it bothered him. He wasn't good at talking about feelings, he hated talking in general. Well, he didn't mind talking to Yamaguchi. Yama was the one person he could be totally honest around, and vice versa. Tonight, Tsukki felt as though Yamaguchi was hiding something.

They were walking down the street with the high wall next to them, at the end they would go separate ways home. Tsukki couldn't take it anymore and stopped. Yamaguchi turned around to look at the statue like Tsukkishima. "What is it?" Tsukki asked Yama, his head was slightly down and the glare from the lamplight on his glasses covered his eyes. Yamaguchi tried to collect words because he instantly knew that Tsukki knew that something was on his mind. Yamaguchi couldn't just tell him that it was Tsukki who was on his mind. "Yama, did you overhear something that troubles you? What is it?" He went on as he tilted his head back and stared at Yamaguchi with hard eyes. There was a long silence before Yamaguchi spoke, he knew that he couldn't get out of it so he said, "Hinata and Kageyama are dating."

Tsukkishima didn't even blink as he waited for Yamaguchi to go on. "It's just made me think about people and if I like girls or boys." Yamaguchi's words began to come faster and stumbled out. "Now I'm just confused because I don't think I like girls. I only like the guys on our team but you're the only one I like as more than a simple friend. I mean everyone else are my good friends but you are my best friend, the only one who has always been there for me. You saved me back in middle school and you are the reason I started volleyball and why I made friends. I'm just so confused and I don't know-"

Tsukkishima had came towards Yamaguchi and pushed him against the wall. His hands trapped him as he put them against the wall on each side of Yamaguchi. Tsukki's eyes were a cold fire. Yamaguchi had never seen this look before, it reminded him of a wolf. Yama let his fingertips grasp at the rough wall as he stared up at Tsukki.

"I hate hot blooded people. And seeing you upset or distraught makes my blood boil." His voice was low. Yamaguchi hadn't ever seen this intense side of Tsukki before. "I know that I'm terrible at talking. I leave it up to you. But I am very thankful that you have listened to the little that I do say. You are the only close friend that I have. Hearing you say all this only stirs the question that has been on my mind for weeks. I know that I am hard to be around but you've done it and I don't know what I'd do without you."

Yamaguchi was frozen in that moment, many emotions ran through him. He was only able to identify confusion. The insects even seemed to be able to notice the tense air and quieted.

"Ever since that King and Shorty joined our team I began to notice that they had feelings for eachother. It made me think and that pisses me off. I thought I had everything figured out but then I began questioning everything. I've been able to keep it controlled for the most part, now I can't. I blame you," he whispered the last part in Yamaguchi's ear. Yamaguchi felt shivers go down his spine and his heart pounding against his chest.

Tsukki's lips began to brush against Yama's ear. Yamaguchi let out a sharp gasp. Tsukki didn't stop. He planted his lips on his neck and moved across his unguarded collar easily because of Yamaguchi's tank top. Yamaguchi grabbed Tsukkishima's forearms for support, his legs were getting weak. He could hear his heat thumping loudly, so loud he was sure that Tsukki could hear it as well. He then realized that he heard a second heartbeat that was as fast as his own. He didn't have a moment to dwell on it because Tsukki moved up his neck, the warm lips nearing Yamaguchi's. Tsukki paused to look at Yamaguchi as he hovered above his lips. His eyes were caring and had a loving light in them. Yamaguchi thought is was the most beautiful expression he had ever seen on Tsukki's face.

Again, he didn't have time to relish it before Tsukki snaked his arms around his waist and pulled him closer as he kissed him deeply. Yamaguchi wasn't able to tell how long they stood there but when they parted, his stomach felt like it was overflowing with butterflies. He clung to Tsukki and buried his face in his chest, blushing. Tsukki draped his arms around the smaller Yamaguchi and rested his lips in his dark hair. Tsukki was grateful that Yama didn't see the blush that had spread across his face. They stood in silence, letting the quiet night envelope and surround them. The cool summer breeze softly tumbled through the trees and the hush was welcomed.

Tsukki breathed in deeply before he stepped back and turned to walk home. "See you tomorrow."

Yamaguchi stared after him with his mouth open before saying "Dumbass," and smiling as he took a moment to try and quiet his leaping heart.

In the morning Yamaguchi stood face to face with a gaping Hinata and Tsukki glared with Kageyama who held Hinata's smaller hand.

Yamaguchi glanced at his hand which was in Tsukki's larger one. He blushed and smiled sheepishly at Hinata. Hinata gave a thumbs up and grinned brightly.
