SIX

"GIRL ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?" Alex asked as Henna smiled recalling her and B-Rabbit's date from two days ago. "Sorry! Say it again for me?" Henna said as she continued to wipe the kitchen counters after hours. "Anyways he's so much better than I thought! I'm so glad you put me on to him" Alex continued as Henna furrowed her brows. "I never put you on to Wink, Alex" She laughed at her friend's memory as Alex rolled her eyes. "Damn did you listen to anything I was saying? Ain't no one talking about Wink" She says taking a sip of the milkshake Henna bought for her using her paycheck. "Then who?" Her best friend asked as Alex took another long sip.

"B-Rabbit"

Henna blinked, her grip tightening on the rag in her hand. "What?"

Alex smirked, twirling her straw around in the milkshake. "B-Rabbit. You know, the same B-Rabbit you've been sneaking' off with." She spoke as Henna's heart dropped. "Wait, what did y'all do again?" She said giving her full attention to the girl in front of her. "He works with my brother so we saw each other and...we might've fucked" Alex finished, feigning a act of innocence as Henna's eyes started to itch.

"Oh."

Henna forced a laugh, though it felt like swallowing glass. "Damn, Alex. You move fast."

Alex shrugged, completely unbothered as she took another sip of her milkshake. "Ain't that serious. We was vibin', one thing led to another, and well..." She smirked. "You know how it go." Henna nodded slowly, gripping the rag so tight her knuckles turned white. She could feel her heart pounding in her ears, but she kept her face neutral. Calm. Like she didn't care. Like it didn't matter.

"But sorry girl, I know you was feeling him" Alex shrugged towards the Zimbabwean woman who nodded. "Yeah" She replied trying her hardest not to cry because she knew her friend was not sorry, she never was. "Umm, I actually gotta get back to work Alex. You gotta go" Henna said quietly to her friend as she scrunched up her face. "You're kicking me out?" Alex said offended as Henna shook her head. "That's not what i'm tryna say-That's exactly what you're trying to say Henna. You're all fucking mad over this? It's not a big deal" Alex argued as Henna shook her head. "It is a big deal because every time someone shows slight interest in me you have to have them. Deshawn in fucking 8th grade, Wink, and now Rabbit. So yeah i'm upset" Alex's smirk faltered for a second before she rolled her eyes. "Oh my God, Henna, you still on that?"

Henna let out a humorless laugh, finally dropping the rag on the counter. "Still on that? You act like this ain't a pattern, Alex." She shook her head, her voice trembling with anger. "You do this every damn time. I let it slide when we were kids 'cause whatever, it was stupid crushes. But this? This was different."

Alex scoffed, folding her arms. "Girl, please. You and Rabbit weren't even a thing. You just went on one lil' date."

Henna exhaled sharply, willing herself to stay calm, but the betrayal sat heavy in her chest. "It don't even matter if we was or not. You knew I liked him. And you still—" She cut herself off, shaking her head again in disbelief at the situation in front of her.

Alex threw her hands up. "Damn, Henna! You actin' like I did this to hurt you." Henna's lips parted slightly, disbelief washing over her. "Then why'd you do it?" Alex hesitated for a split second, and that was all Henna needed. "You don't even want these dudes, Alex," she continued, voice quieter now, but sharp as a blade. "You just don't like when they look at me instead of you." Alex's face twisted, but there was something behind her eyes—guilt, maybe, or at least recognition.

"That's not—"

"Yeah it is Alex. So please just fucking leave" She said quietly as Alex just walked out, leaving Henna standing in the empty diner, heart pounding, hands shaking.

Henna walked alone back to her mother's house as she tried not to let tears trickle down her face. "Henny!" She heard someone call out as she walked faster pretending not to hear the voice. "Henna, I know you hear me calling you!" Future laughed catching up to her not noticing the state she was in until he finally stood in front of her, making his face falter. Future's usual cocky grin faded as he took in her red-rimmed eyes, the way she clutched her arms around herself like she was trying to hold something in. His brows knitted together.

"Damn, what happened?" he asked, tilting his head as he studied her.

Henna forced a shaky breath, looking down at the pavement. "Nothing," she muttered, stepping to the side to walk past him, but he blocked her path.

"Nah, you look like you 'bout to cry. Who pissed you off?" His voice had lost its usual teasing edge, replaced with something closer to concern.

Henna let out a sharp exhale, shaking her head. "It doesn't matter."

Future scoffed. "Shit, it matter if it got you lookin' like this."

She swallowed hard, debating whether to tell him. What was the point? It wasn't like talking about it would undo what happened. But standing there under the dim glow of the streetlights, the weight of it all pressing down on her, she suddenly felt too tired to hold it in.

"Was he just playing with me? Did he just want to get with Alex this whole time?" She asked voice breaking. "What're you talking about?" He asked genuinely confused with the questions being asked. "Alex and Rabbit. Did he only get close to me so he can fuck her?" She asked as Future's face contorted. "Did you not know?" She wondered as Future's expression hardened, his jaw clenching as realization set in. "The fuck you mean, Alex and Rabbit?" His voice was low, dangerous even.

Henna wrapped her arms tighter around herself, biting down on her trembling lip. "She told me at the diner," she admitted, voice barely above a whisper. "She said they... they slept together." Future let out a sharp breath, dragging a hand down his face. "Nah, that don't sound right." Henna let out a humorless chuckle, shaking her head. "Well, she sure seemed proud to tell me about it."

He stared at her for a moment, eyes flickering with something unreadable. "And Rabbit? He ain't say shit to you?" Henna scoffed. "Nope. Guess I wasn't even worth a damn excuse." Future cursed under his breath, shaking his head. "That don't make sense, Henny. I ain't say Rabbit some saint or nothin', but he ain't the type to do grimy shit like that. He was really into you." Henna blinked up at him, her heart twisting painfully at the words.

"Well, I guess he wasn't into me enough."
