A Tall Order

"She said what?!" Onyx asked for the second time after Song repeated the message from his mother.

"I've heard of this, but haven't seen it in the context that Song is speaking of. In my research those kind of abilities are not uncommon, I mean look at us. Can you say that we're on the same playing field as the average person who walks through town? We're faster and stronger than the common person." Creed thought deeply.

"Creed, we spent most of our lives training, I hope it did a little something worthwhile." Onyx retorted as he rolled his eyes.

"What about Song, she's never 'trained', she's faster and stronger than the common girl her age as well." Creed pointed to Song.

"Maybe it's just some untapped potential, maybe we just need to explore the possibilities. This could be an opportunity to beat the Shadows," she paused, "What's wrong Onyx? What are you not telling us?"

He hung his head down, "I was waiting for the right moment to tell you guys that my mother told me that my father is completely consumed by the Shadows."

"A daywalker," Creed gasped.

Onyx nodded before putting his head in his hands. Song looked puzzled, "What's a daywalker?"

"A daywalker is a person whose soul has been completely vanquished by the Shadows. See most people just become infected when the Shadows consume the light from the amulet, but in the case of daywalkers the Shadows consumed the soul first. The tricky part is that the amulet in these cases can turn from color to gray in an instant. So, it's hard to pin them down, they can pass for ordinary people. In those cases, in my experience, there's no return for them. Shadowhunters can liberate only if the soul still has light, we aid people who are too weak to fight for themselves, but if the soul is gone, there's nothing we can do to save them. But I thought the SSS had eliminated them, I mean that was my first assignment. I thought I got them all."

"Don't say that! I have to bring him back." Onyx stood up.

"Onyx this is my specialty! This is the most dangerous kind of case, he can walk among common people and infect them when they least expect it. I been sent on these kinds of missions all the time. They fight the most violent fight, they will outright kill you in the process. Every ounce of good has been eaten up by the Shadows. Onyx, at this point your father can kill any Shadowhunter especially those untrained amateurs. You hear me? I didn't say hurt, I said kill!"

"Creed, I know." Onyx whispered.

"Creed is that all, no other options?" Song looked at him with pleading eyes.

"Not that I've seen. It was my specialty for years. But it all makes sense now, my Shadowhunter instincts are fined tuned to this kind of threat. That's what's been itching me, I kept saying that something wasn't right. This is what it was. It hasn't come full circle because I haven't physically come in contact with him. I'm just sensing him, that's the something wrong that's been bugging me."

Onyx got up and started for the door.

Creed followed him saying, "But, I also know that he's your father. And I respect that. Onyx two days, I'm giving you a chance to fix him, but I can't help you. My instincts will kick in and-"

"The two of you will fight to the death, I know. That's why I told you. So, you would give me a chance. Tell the SSS tomorrow to give me a chance to track him down." Onyx looked back with a small smile creeping on his face.

"I'll try to keep the amateur Shadowhunters off the streets tonight. Kai, Free, and I can hold some type of tournament for them, they wouldn't want to miss it. But, Creed, there's something I want to look for in the SSS archives." Song suggested.

"Sounds good, I'll take you over there sometime during the 'tournament'. Go ahead and tell Kai and Free, they can get information out fast." Creed agreed.

Song walked out of the door leaving Onyx and Creed looking at each other. Creed followed closely behind her and gently closed the door behind her.

"Look, Song and myself are using our parents amulets in attempt to feed the Gate some much needed positive energy. Listen closely, by the end of two days, your father and I are bound to meet. And one of us will cease to exist. If I die-"

"Creed, no," Onyx interrupted.

"No! Shut up, this is the risk, right? If I die, take my amulet to the Gate, that's the four. Four Shadowhunters who died, and close it. If. I. Die. End. This. Then guard the Gate with your life and never let this happen again," Creed commanded.

"If it comes to that yes, I promise, on the blood running in my veins. But, I too have a plan, yours will be the backup. But, I'm going to need you to have my back, as always."

"Of course, because you're going to try and save him and for your family's sake, that's honorable and it's a tall order. But if anyone can do it, it's us."

"I'm glad we're brothers," Onyx placed a hand on Creed's shoulder and looked him in his gray eyes.

"I wouldn't want it any other way."

"A tournament sounds good, Song, but me and Free are more going to be more like bodyguards in case something jumps off. We'll let them have some fun, and they'll never know that anything's happening. But, you know they are going to want to see you, Shadowhunter of the Decade." Kai raised his eyebrows.

"That's true Song, where are you going?" Free asked.

"Creed and I are going to the archives." Song answered.

"Looking for?" Free asked.

"Anything in reference to Shadowhunters developing powers as they specialize their hunter abilities. What if we have some kind of ability, but just have never known about it. We could use our special abilities as our edge. The unexpected element! The hidden weapon in our arsenal." Song was excited about the possibility.

Free shook her head. "I've heard of that, but I've never seen it. My grandfather has spoken of it, but he said it was rare. Now, it's more common for SSS Shadowhunters to use or try to use Light Elements, Master or not. What kinds of powers are you thinking of?"

"Onyx's mother, has Regenerative Healing, she said the my mother used Blinding Radiance." Song replied.

"What! That's amazing. Song that could mean that Onyx and you have a specialized power, since your parents did." Free was about to burst with excitement.

"What about you, Free? You grandfather is the leader of the SSS, does he have a special ability?" Kai asked.

"No, he didn't. He also told me that my parents didn't either, you know they were consumed by the Shadows when I was young." Free held her head down.

Song ears perked, "Were they completely consumed?"

"At first they weren't, but as time passed eventually they were. It was hard watching them suffer when I was a child. I always held on to a slither of hope for them. Everyday, it almost killed them to keep from turning me. Grandfather found out shortly after they had been completely consumed and he took me away from them. Afterwards, he sent specialty Shadowhunters to contain them." Free explained.

"And they fought to the death from there," Kai finished.

"Song, if it comes to it, please let Creed get him. Creed is like no other when it comes to that line of work. Save Onyx the pain." Free whispered.

"That's why my mind is at work, that's why I need to learn about these abilities. Something keeps ringing in my mind, I think it's something that I read: the Gate is the key. Onyx's mother said that the Shadowhunter weapons are gifts from the Gate. So, where do the abilities come from? My mind, it's on the verge of something, but I don't what." Song eyes got wide.

"Okay, okay Song, we get it. We're with you," Kai grabbed her. "I know that you're onto something, you always are. And think, it would be incredible if we have the potential to end this. End this war and free our people and avenge those who put their lives on the line for us. Song I know that you'll find something." Kai said in a soothing voice.

"Me too, but don't worry, Kai and I will hold everything down." Free nodded.

"I trust you two, let's do this!" Song exclaimed. Amber eyes, met chocolate brown and odd colored eyes, all determined to change fate. Today a tall order was set.
