Chapter 77
I am sooo sorry for the wait, you guys. Thank you to anyone still around! Hopefully you enjoy (:
Third person pov
Nobody has ever inspired this much potential for physical violence in Harper before. Then again, nobody has ever made her want to rip her own brain out of her head and kick it through a skylight and into the distant beyond either.
Harper knows how to get away with homicide. She'd be able to do it, easy. There are several avenues she could take, millions of options. She'd be able to get away with it without so much as a hitch and even if she did, by some slim chance, get caught and prosecuted?
It would nearly be worth it. Harper's never come across someone this vile before. She wishes she were lying when she said so, too. It's not that she's never run into a hypersexual in the past. It's just that Endeavor does it in such a revolting way that she can't help but gag.
Trying to hype herself up to go meet the flame hero by the gates of UA is a real treat. Honestly, really and truly. This self-inflicted trauma has got to be a sign of some sort of deep seated self hatred or something, right? Harper should probably talk to Hound Dog about that, but just thinking about him right now makes her want to shed actual tears. He deserved so much better. Harper probably did too, yet here she is. About to march out there of her own accord.
"I can't believe this is happening to me." Harper muttered, more to herself than to anyone else. Kurogiri looked acutely concerned. She'd forced him to change out of his usual suit and slacks getup and instead into something more street-casual. Despite the fact that they were going to be accompanied by a flaming seven foot man in spandex, she still wanted to at least try to aim for the illusion of subtlety. With any luck, people would be too enamored with Endeavor to pay them much attention.
Maybe this could be a good thing to a degree. Endeavor would inevitably draw crowds and with crowds came information. Harper was great at going unnoticed. She had brown hair and brown eyes and there was nothing special about her whatsoever. Eyes naturally glanced over her. Kurogiri was a bit of a problem, as sharply handsome as he was. It was still better than his signature purple and black mist though. The worst they'd probably get were college age girls ogling at him like he was a piece of meat. Maybe a few guys too.
"We do not need to go if you do not wish, Harper Rye. I know you are... revolted by him." Kurogiri offered in a soft, placating sort of way that made Harper want to break dishes in an abandoned parking lot. "She looks incredibly exhausted and we have not even left yet! This is a bad idea. A horrible one. A veritable toaster in a proverbial bathtub! What if she gets taken? What if I am not fast enough, or they block my quirk as they did last time? Oh my god, she's going to die. She's going to get killed! I cannot do this!"
"It'll be fine. We need to do this." Harper grumbled. The League of Villains had completely fallen off the map. Tsukauchi had questioned Spinner-- the weird Stain, teenage mutant ninja turtle looking fanboy who'd switched sides at the summer camp-- but he had very little useful information. He was a newer recruit, with the camp being his first shindig. Harper was going to need to talk to him at some point. "We just want to try and figure out where they are. They're going to be cautious with their boss out of commission, but they won't be expecting someone like me to be listening."
"This is a bad idea." Kurogiri said with an undertone of distress. Which he was dead fucking right, but Harper wasn't... she had to do this, you know? Sitting around, wallowing, was going to get her nowhere fucking fast. She had to distract herself. She had to do something, even if that something included spending time with Endeavor himself. God, she was going to vomit at least once before the day was out, wasn't she? "This is horrible. This is simply horrible. I should insist she stay. She is much, much safer on campus! On the street there will be hardly anybody to protect her! She will be too vulnerable!"
Not true, since she had Kurogiri and Japan's acting Number One Hero. Which yeah, he was fucking disgusting, but he was high in the ranks for a reason. And it wasn't his charming personality, if you hadn't gathered that already. This would probably be the safest she'd ever been walking down the street, ironically enough. Harper dragged a hand down her face and wished Kirishima were here not for the first time today. Had things been this hard before she got close to him? Harper couldn't recall.
It was a fairly warm day. Harper felt like a shriveled up apricot. One that was willingly marching off to a day full of psychological torture and generalized suffering, as though she hadn't been through enough lately. Katsuki watched her sulk past with raised brows but didn't bother to ask, because he's a fucking douchebag and he doesn't actually care as much about her feelings as he'd have you think. Today is awful and it's only just getting started. Damn Nezu. Could he not have called literally anyone else? No, really. Literally anyone else.
Harper hadn't really told anyone the extent of what she was doing. Mostly because she didn't quite know herself, but also because she didn't want to be stopped. Nezu probably knew exactly why she was going off galivanting through the streets despite being one of the League's number one targets. However, he wasn't obligated to actually stop her unless she told him that outright, in which case he'd be forced to in order to cover his own ass. If it came out that he'd given a minor permission to leave campus whilst being mortally threatened, knowing they were going off in search of information on said threat? He'd be toast. Which was a tempting prospect, but not as tempting as Shigaraki's head on a pike was.
"Took you long enough." Endeavor hissed the words out like the fiend he was. Harper took a deep breath and reminded herself, not for the first time, that kneeing him the balls would only lead to her getting burned alive. Which sounded quite appealing at the moment, but Kurogiri would have a right conniption. He deserved better than that, going along with her without question the way he was. "Saddled with a stupid brat. At least she's got some rather... attractive friends. I wonder if I could convince her to call along that officer. Surely she'd at least tell me his name."
"I see that you are not known for your patience." Kurogiri said cordially. Color Harper impressed. He'd never really been snarky with anyone aside from Sansa, but Harper wasn't about to complain. "A complete and utter idiot. I want Harper Rye as far away from him as possible, but unfortunately that isn't possible. She has plans and she will not allow me to interfere. Even if those plans involve this disgusting, soggy, flaming orange peapod of a man."
"Watch it. You're still considered a criminal in many regards, and I won't hesitate to bring you down if you get in my way." Endeavor seethed out in spiteful response. Harper watched the posturing with a blank face, wondering if it was worth it to try and lose the guy once they got to the more populated areas of Japan. "She should've invited Hound Dog as her companion. Those big hands, sharp claws, and his tongue. I can just imagine--"
Harper sighed deeply. It was going to be a long day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Harper had decided about half an hour ago that she was going to get Shoto away from Enji Todoroki at all costs, because nobody deserved to have to live with him. Just the thought of coexisting with this man for a prolonged amount of time made her shiver. She had no idea how Shoto had lasted so long, but Dabi's mental instability sure made a lot more sense now. There was no goddamn way she could leave her classmate in this situation. She'd known he was bad, but this bad? She should've acted sooner.
He'd been not-so-subtly digging for information on not just Sansa, but on Hound Dog too. Kurogiri was ready to throw the former to the wolves, but Harper had elbowed him into silence anytime he tried to make a comment on the matter. Sansa was a great backup plan. A hidden trump card Harper could pull if she needed something. That something potentially being Shoto's custody rights, if she couldn't come up with anything else.
Sansa hardly deserved autonomy anyway, the piece of shit. He'd probably be into the whole submissive and breedable shtick Endeavor had going, as caught up as he was in the illusion of feline superiority as he was. He and Endeavor were actually sort of perfect for one another. Sansa would definitely think he was better then Endeavor, but Endeavor would... probably be into that. So it seemed like it would most likely work. A solid plan she hoped she wouldn't have to enact but would if it came down to it. Shoto would never know the weight of her sacrifices.
"What are we even doing out here?" Endeavor asking in a griping tone. Eyes trailed after him as Harper briskly kept pace a few steps ahead of him, her hand still in Kurogiri's and her quirk widely probing. It was giving her a headache, but Endeavor was definitely doing his job and keeping anyone from noticing her and the warp gate user. It wouldn't do her any good to have someone recognize her as a UA student. "She still won't tell me that officer's name. I want to know. I need to know. What precinct is he from? Even just that much, yes, I could--"
"Listening." Harper responded to his question in a clipped tone. His thoughts were going to absolutely kill her by the end of the day. Already she'd had to duck into a Starbucks bathroom and dry heave for three minutes straight over one of their oddly pristine toilets after they passed someone with a lion head. She'd then ordered herself the sugariest, most caffeinated drink she could think of. The barista had looked appropriate amounts of disgusted and concerned. "If you didn't want to come along then you shouldn't have. Should've given the job to someone else-- I hear Edgeshot is a nice guy."
She would've mentioned Hawks or even Miruko, but they both had animal features and she was trying to avoid bringing that up at all costs. Best Jeanist had gotten injured and was currently down for the count, so he hadn't been on the roster of options. Harper frowned, trying to figure out how best to shimmy Shoto's custody out from beneath Endeavor's ridiculously large, gaudy boots. Maybe she should start plotting Sansa's funeral now. Or his wedding...
"Nezu told me you had an errand to run. To me, it looks as though you're doing absolutely nothing but waste time. You've been walking for hours and, so far, all you've done is purchase an absurd amount of coffee." Enji bit out. "Though, I did see a man with bear ears just moments ago. He was big-- burly. I can only imagine what he'd taste like in my m--"
"Then stop looking." Kurogiri said in a pleasant tone. Harper paused to give him an appraising look. Maybe he'd finally hit his learning curve. That was a good one. He was on a roll today. Harper's sanity was slowly starting to go, though, even with his enjoyable smarminess. "I will eviscerate him. I shall warp him into an active volcano. Wait, no! I shall give him deep lesions and then drop him into a vat of root beer... along with a plethora of Mentos! Yes! The cuts will burn and he will drown! I am a genius. I will drop Sansa in as well, but only after he has died. I think he would enjoy Sansa joining him far too much and he does not deserve such commodities in death."
"What he said." Harper glanced back at the flame hero, who glowered down at her. Harper sniffed a bit but was otherwise unaffected. It was funny how confused her indifference to his temper made him. "Why agree to cart a teenager around anyway? Like I said before, this shit is leagues below your paygrade. If I'm such a waste of time, why bother?"
Endeavor scowled at her like she'd just personally wronged him. For all she knew, she had. Harper really doesn't give a shit one way or another. So far she's found out zilch. A lot of people are thinking about the attack and the League of Villains. It's all over the news and the news is all over people's phones, and people are always looking at their phones. That's the only good thing. As for actual information? So far, no dice. Harper had expected that, though. She's not mad about it.
"...You are my son's classmate. You're a child and you are in danger. As insufferable as you are, you need protection. Especially if you're going to go out on useless, reckless excursions such as this one." Endeavor grunted reluctantly. Harper blinked, somehow not expecting him to genuinely care about what happened to her. Not that she was demonizing furries. Just Endeavor. "I've never met someone as stupid as she is."
"If you knew half of what I knew about you, you'd be hiring a defense attorney." Harper admitted. Confusion flitted vaguely behind his eyes but aside from that, his expression stayed ugly as all hell. Nothing new. "Whatever. I'm hearing more this direction so we may be onto something. Just keep an eye out for muggers. We just passed a guy who committed a double homicide last week, but it was on his cheating ex and her pedophilic partner of choice, so I'll keep the details to myself.
This part of town was definitely shittier. She ignored the way Endeavor's thoughts jolted at her casual mention of murder and instead slowed her walk, taking the time to really nose into buildings and the people inside. There wasn't a huge difference other than the fact that some of the people in this area seemed to know the League beyond the news. As in, they'd heard of them outside of the events of Kamino Ward, as rumors on the street. Even if they'd never seen them before, them having heard from other sources was sign she was getting gradually warmer.
Harper knew the police were going to get nowhere fast on their efforts to find where Shigaraki had hunkered down. He was the type that knew how to disappear, as immature as he was. Unluckily for him, Harper is really, really good at finding things out. Harper was determined to get at least something on the guy. She wants him dead and she's not about to half-ass her effort.
There are very few Harper hates. She'd thought she hated Mr. Compress for what he did to her, her brother, and Inasa. And she did to a degree, but it was nothing matched up to the piping hot rage that flowed through her anytime she thought about Handsy. Childish, self entitled, cocky, murderous for no reason at all. What the hell was his problem, and why did he feel the need to take it out on teenagers? If he had beef with heroes, great. But they weren't heroes yet-- they were kids. And anyone who attacked kids was automatically a piece of shit.
Thus, why not take the League of Villains down? Dismantling them seemed like a grand thing to do in her free time. They were shit and she was seething in search of vengeance. Iida would be so disappointed if he knew. Difference with hers is that she's not about to rush in blind. Harper wants it to hurt and she wants to make sure she weeds everything out. Shigaraki's the head of a much bigger iceberg, Harper is certain. One that's been around a long time. She'll have to talk to All Might about it more later; see what she can wheedle out of his bear trap.
"We shouldn't stick around here." Endeavor's thoughts rumbled, surprisingly about something not completely and totally dehumanizing. Lovely. This is the first time he's had a normal person thought that wasn't accompanied by utter garbage in what, the last four hours now? What an achievement. "Why has she led us here? Just what is her quirk?"
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. Harper Rye!" Kurogiri wailed internally. He was shaking slightly, eyes darting every which way. It was a small miracle he hadn't turned purple yet. She wondered if he had any contacts. Why hadn't she asked that to begin with? Fuck, she needed to get her head on straight and utilize what she had. Sero, too, even if he really didn't know much. He may have some names."I do not like this! I do not like this at all!"
Endeavor was getting some downright nasty looks from those lingering along the sides of the street and outside pubs. Seeing a hero made them naturally think of villains, so Harper'd take it where she could. Her quirk scanned around. Sometimes walking around was all you needed to do. Though they were right. They would need to stop and turn around soon. They'd been at it for hours and though Harper was glad to have found this place as a launch pad for her hunt, there was only so much Endeavor she could take.
Besides, she had other avenues to pursue. Shigaraki was quite obviously connected to the creation of the Nomu, and Harper is almost certain that's what they'd been trying to make her brother into. Was his quirk out there somewhere, bumbling around in one of those things? Harper felt sick thinking about it. This had been going on too long. Harper's almost not sure where to start, but at least she's got a place to start digging.
"...Kurogiri, you said a doctor worked for All For One. One that you can't remember very clearly." Harper noted, eyeing him and trying not to think of the portly man who'd strapped her brother down to a metal table and killed him. If Compress was alive, he definitely was too. Kurogiri's face tightened, his shoulders drawing into a hard line. Endeavor's gaze sharpened onto her, the man startled by her sudden topic change as she turned them around and began leading Kurogiri back the way they'd come. "Do you know anyone who could tell me about him? Without the League knowing I'm looking?"
"What is she planning? Why exactly are we out here?" Endeavor wondered, suddenly looking around with a lot more care. He'd been flippant the whole time, writing this all off as simple childishness. Harper wondered if he knew any names, and if she'd be able to bring them to the forefront of his mind if he did. "This girl... she's been out here looking. Listening, she said. What is she listening for? And how?"
Kurogiri seemed to struggle with himself for a moment but knew he wouldn't be able to keep himself from thinking about it. Harper felt bad bringing up such bad memories, but they'd all been through their own share of shit lately. They were going to feel like deep fried ass no matter what. Might as well be productive about it.
"...There's to guarantee he wouldn't rat you out. He's a hard man to track down. I told Tsukauchi about him, but they're already aware of his existence and know they're not likely to catch him." Kurogiri admitted after a moment. "He's an information broker who remains unaffiliated with any one faction. He works as his own entity. He also sells weapons and drugs. I wouldn't know how to find him but there... may be a way to contact him. There is a large risk he will tell Shigaraki in order to stay in his favor, however. It is much too dangerous, Harper Rye. Much too dangerous."
"Giran." Endeavor grimaced, seeming rather interested in her affairs out of nowhere. He'd probably realized she was actually doing something out of here. Harper's eyes snapped to him. He was looking a lot more useful all of a sudden. "What is this girl looking for?"
Harper smiled. It came out looking more like a grimace.
~~~~~~~~~
Endeavor was invested in her little plot now, which was ass. Gave her more time to get Shoto out and secured her a babysitter for anytime she needed to leave UA, but of all people, did it really have to be him? At least he'd gotten serious near the end there. Harper hadn't thought him capable of any thought aside from his usual furry bullshit. Maybe she'd actually make it out of this without severe brain damage from listening to him ruminate on the size of Hound Dog's... assets. And Sansa's. And really every male, animalistic consciousness out there.
He was more competent that Harper could've hoped, and he knew a lot. He was the Number One Hero so that was only natural, but you know. It was useful and Harper could definitely use it. He was on the task team hunting down the League which meant he got updates, and him getting updates meant Harper could also get those updates. Even if she had to dig them out from behind his thick, one-track minded skull. Did he ever stop thinking about... it? He was fiending. Frothing at the mouth. Someone needed to lay him before Harper buried the guy alive.
That was no matter right now. Harper had gotten as much on Giran as she could but hadn't decided on whether or not he was a good idea. Instead, she found herself sticking to safer options to start with.
"Oh my god, she's staring at us."
"She's staring at Toshinori, you absolute fucking walnut. We're not actually visible. We're just dead."
"We're what?"
"What do you mean 'what'? You literally got murdered, you idiot. Are you meaning to tell me that you thought you were alive this whole time?"
"I know, but if I'd died, why would I still be here? We're alive in a sense, right?"
"No. No, we're literally ghosts. I'm super confident about that little tidbit, mate. In fact, we may not even be that. We may just be imprints of who we were, latched on like little parasites."
"Ew. So you're calling us lice? Also why're you talking in an Australian accent?"
"Quirk lice."
"So you're racist against Australians, then? I see."
"Can you all shut the actual fuck up? I'm trying to listen."
"But no one's said anything yet anyway."
"Which he'd know if you weren't talking so loud. Did you die without your hearing aids on or something? Everyone and their mom can hear you."
"Actually, fun fact--"
"I literally just said to shut the fuck up."
"Why would I have anything against Australians? My first girlfriend was from Australia, and I would've married her if she weren't so obsessed with that pre-quirk fellow named Justin Bieber."
"Oh my fu--"
Harper massaged her temples and contemplated how much Toshinori could possibly know. Surely not that much, right? Did she really need to be here right now? She guessed this was better than Endeavor. At least none of the voices were so thirsty they were disgustingly desperate.
"Are you alright, Young Harper?" Toshinori asked. He looked tired and worn, somehow managing to appear even skinnier than before. The fight had taken a lot out of him, and the guilt over what had happened to Kirishima took even more. He was blaming himself. Harper wished he wouldn't. "She looks exhausted. I... I wish I could do more. I wish there was something I could say. If I'd been faster, stronger, then--"
"Put a sock in it. If you're to blame then I'm just as guilty." Harper gave him a look and his thoughts twisted awkwardly. Harper washed the man flush with embarrassment and reminded herself that this was really and truly All Might she was sitting across from. "I came here to ask about something else. What happened to Kirishima wasn't your fault, it wasn't mine, and it wasn't Dabi's. Fault lies on the fucks who actually did it."
"Preach!" Nana crowed. Harper got the distinct impression that the woman would high-five him if she were here. Harper, in this instance, would gladly accept.
"R-Right. Yes, of course." Toshinori sputtered, not believing her at all. "She sounds just like Young Midoriya."
"At least Midoriya's got a brain, then. That's great news." Harper said flatly. He was another person she should probably talk to. "Anyway. I need to talk to you about All For One and his operations. He's been the arch nemesis of you and your predecessors for the past century or so, right? Tell me about that."
Toshinori looked very pale. Harper added getting him on a proper diet to her mental to-do list.

AHHH IT'S BEEN SO LONG! As always, you can read up to Chapter 82 on Patreon. The link is in my bio ((: I know I've been dead here, but I definitely haven't there.
If you enjoy reading about Harper, there's plentiful content of her there. Her as a ghost hunting youtuber with Hawks, her as a yakuza boss (Which I think the first chapter of is free? On there? Idk), her as a werewolf, a witch, a demon, a serial killer, a vigilante, etc. I write her so much on there it's insane, it's easy to forget her main story when I've made so many others with her in it.
Maybe I'll post some of the older ones on here sometime! Thank you to everyone who read, I'll make an effort to update more often!
31 days of october is also happening on Patreon right now, where I post once a day for all 31 days! There's lots of Harper coming out, lots of Naruto, other bnha, and more! Thank you to everyone who's supported me, requested on there for specific things, and enjoyed my writing. It means the world to me.
