Chapter 65

Third person pov

Harper yanked Bakugo back enough for Shigaraki to miss his face, but not far enough to keep him completely out of grabbing range. Kota dropped from her grip like a stone in a pond as Shigaraki managed to grab one of Bakugo's ankles tightly with both hands. It all happened far too fast for any of them to react. She shoved her cousin behind her as Bakugo's mind went white with pain, a scream tearing out of his throat unbidden as his skin began to flake away at an alarming rate. Harper's heart was in her throat as blood immediately began to pour, Shigaraki's finger's digging into him tightly. Harper didn't hesitant to yank her classmate back with a grunt, her foot slamming hard into Shigaraki's face. The crack that should've been all too satisfying was drowned out by Katsuki's screaming as he fell back, eyes wide and unseeing. Kota backpedaled immediately, hands dripping with water and eyes turning nasty with a glare as he looked to the villains. She admired his bravery. She was thankful for it.

The sight was awful. Harper forced herself to look away when she realized Bakugo's foot was no longer attached, bone jutting out sharply and covered in blood that continued to rush out. She fought to stay steady. She couldn't cry, or panic, or vomit right now. Even if Bakugo had just... fuck! Shigaraki had just fucking... his leg. Bakugo's lower right leg was completely mangled, and the boy was out of it. His mind had gone blank before he could even process what was happening. Harper wondered if he'd remember any of this later. She hoped not. She really, really hoped not.

Shigaraki let out a shriek of his own as Harper's arms wrapped around Katsuki, slowly lowering him to the ground and bearing her teeth. Blood gushed from the villains now-crooked nose as he popped back up, ready to dive at them again. She was surprised when Magne and Mr. Compress both dove to stop him, restraining his arms and dragging them back before Harper could melt his brain with her quirk. Harper felt sick to her stomach as her wide-eyed gaze flitted between Bakugo and Shigaraki, her heart beating so wildly fast she could barely feel it. Her throat tightened in panic as Bakugo's hands began to pop, sweat pouring down his face as he fell into a heavy shock. His chest rose and fell too quickly, his breaths coming out in choked wheezes. His entire body spasmed and twitched. Color and warmth drained from him like water being sucked down a drain. Kota choked out a sob behind her. Fuck. Fuck, fuck, FUCK!

This was her fault. This was completely and entirely her fault. Why had she said that?! Why had she provoked him?! Losing Kurogiri had clearly made him unstable. Unstable enough to attack their summer camp and kidnap them. Harper was someone they'd been after. She was glad Izuku wasn't here-- she was sure they'd have killed him by now-- but fuck! Katsuki's foot was gone. It was gone. And hers or Kota's was going to be next if she didn't shut the fuck up and calm down. Fuck!

"You're okay, Katsuki. It's going to be okay. I've got you." The words poured out of Harper's mouth before she could stop them. He'd just lost his foot. Just like that. She should've just told him he could have Kurogiri back. Should've just fucking lied and went with it instead of provoking the obviously mentally-unstable man! Good going, Harper! You fucking idiot! Now her classmate was bleeding out and missing a foot. His foot was gone. It was literally sitting there on the ground, detached from his body. Bakugo Katsuki had just lost his foot, all because he'd put himself between Harper and the actual danger. Shit. Fuck. "Fuck. Alright, alright. Fuck."

"I-Is he going to be okay?" Kota hiccupped. Harper's eyes clenched shut for a moment. The smell of blood in the air was heavy enough to make her feel woozy. She wanted to cry. She'd never felt this sick to her stomach before. Or at least, she hadn't for a long time. Bakugo's thoughts flickered in an out like a weak radio signal as his mind struggled to catch up with the abrupt trauma that came with suddenly losing a limb. What was the point of kidnapping them? Why did this have to happen to them? They were fucking kids! Harper could get why they'd taken her, but Katsuki? What had he ever done to them to provoke this? "Harper looks so scared, and his... his foot... that guy cut his foot off!"

Harper didn't have time to think about it. She ripped her Coca Cola shirt up and over her head. Katsuki began to scream all over against as she reached over shakily wrapped it around his stump, pulling it as tightly as she could and trying her best not to vomit. The blood soaked through it fast, darkening the fabric. Her hands were dyed red by the sheer amount of blood pouring out of the wound. Harper couldn't afford to worry about it. Kota buried his face into the back of her undershirt, which she was becoming increasingly more grateful for. At the rate Bakugo was bleeding though, she feared she might have to shed that too just to add more padding. How did she apply pressure to a stump with a bone still sticking out of it?

The wound climbed up his leg. It wasn't a clean cut by any means, leaving it looking like it was sawed through at an odd angle with a rusty butter knife, or stuck in a massive pencil sharpener. Harper swallowed her bile as Shigaraki scratched at his neck, ripping away from his colleagues and turning back towards the bar frustratingly. Magne looked pale as she took in the scene before her, and the man in the black and white bodysuit stared with the eyeholes of his mask stretched in a widened sort of way. Harper felt like crying as her classmate's hands weakly grabbed at her arms, his eyes hazy as he struggled to form any sort of thought through the stun of the sudden pain.

"You said you wanted him unharmed. So he could join us." Toga's voice came out small. Harper's teeth clenched. Dammit. Dammit, dammit, dammit. Harper had no idea where they were or how to get out of here. How was she supposed to move Katsuki like this? Leaving him wasn't an option. Taking him probably wouldn't go well. What else could she do? The heroes had to be close to getting here, didn't they? They had Spinner. Unless they'd changed locations, the lizard-man would still know where the base was. Harper could only hope his conversion over to their side was lasting. "He took his foot! There's... there's so much blood. It's pretty, but what about our plan? Shigaraki said he was perfect villain material, and now look at him!"

Harper was at a loss. Dumbfounded, horrified, and scared all at once. Bakugo was bleeding out and Kota was sobbing a hole through her tank top. She was covered in blood and had no idea what to do. If Shigaraki came back at them she'd be forced to use her quirk against him. It was something she'd told herself she'd never do again. Her parents had made her promise too after finding out what it had done to those closest to her when she'd went off that day in that basement. Overwhelming the brain until it began to melt was a dangerous, inhumane, and painful way to go. But this fucker had just taken Bakugo's foot off, so he was honestly lucky she hadn't snapped his dick off with her own two hands and fed it to him yet.

This was her fault. She should've insisted they disclose her quirk as soon as she caught Sero. Then maybe this could've been avoided to an extent. If she'd stopped going to UA, certainly Bakugo would still have his leg. This was all because she's gotten Kurogiri. And she knew this wasn't the warp gate user's fault. She didn't regret giving him emotions, but Harper just... what did she do? All she wanted to do was cry, and scream, and throw things. It felt like she was choking. Like she was a boat that was steadily sinking deeper and deeper and deeper. His foot was gone! She was holding the stump of his leg and using her favorite shirt to do it. Her cousin was trying not to spiral into a full breakdown behind her.

Harper hadn't really felt hopeless up until this point. Shigaraki was powerful and terrifying, and she knew that. Everyone in this room had the capacity to end them anytime they so wished. Harper had to be careful what she did and how she did it. Bakugo-- the one with an offensive quirk-- had just been gravely injured. Harper had to make sure he didn't bleed out whilst also protecting her cousin and making sure none of them were hurt further. This was her fault. She should've been the one in front. She was the one he'd been really going for. She was the one he was so mad at.

Her quirk. She was fucking useless. Too slow and too dumb. Why had she hesitated? Why hadn't she activated it as soon as she was out? It would've been a gamble, but it also would've been self defense. But what if she'd hurt Kota or Katsuki when she did it? What if she still did? Toga, too--she wasn't always a bad person, much like Kurogiri. A victim of circumstance and of society's shortcomings. The blonde girl wasn't someone Harper wanted to kill. But now she was sitting in a pile of blood next to her friend's severed foot, and she didn't know what to do. Was she supposed to know? Was anyone in this situation?

"What about the plan, Shigaraki?" Mr. Compress hissed, and Harper had never hated anyone more. He had ripped them-- a pair of teenagers and an eight year old-- away from their summer camp. A high school summer camp! For what? Because they were villains and that's what villains did? Because they thought something would come of this? It was pointless! There was nothing to gain! Neither of them would convert to villainy, and it's not like she could just give them Kurogiri like he was a tradeable collector's card. "This idiot! The whole point of this was to leave Bakugo Katsuki unharmed and to deliver Harper Rye to Sensei. Her quirk is of extreme value, and so was his! This immature child just couldn't keep his emotions in check, could he? Dammit!"

Harper sniffled a bit, shaking her head and forcing her tears back. It was okay. Katsuki was going to be okay, and they would be fine. Harper felt small, sitting here. She couldn't stop herself from beginning to cry as Bakugo's eyes started to clear, his grip on her arm tightening a little as the initial rush of pain wore off and was replaced by numbness and a sense of horrifying clarity. Harper was sure she'd been brought here because of her quirk. She knew it held value as an information-gathering tool. It's why Atsuhiro had scouted her all those years ago, wasn't it? It was a miracle he hadn't come for her sooner to steal her power.

Bakugo was an angry and abrasive person, but she didn't see how they could ever think he of all people would be a villain. As volatile as he was, he was a good person. Harper had never seen someone with such drive to be a hero. Izuku had it in him too. Maybe that's why Bakugo loved him so much whilst also clashing with him. The fact that they'd taken Katsuki and thought they'd gain something from it-- anything-- was astonishing to her. He would never. And now Harper wondered if he would ever get the chance to really be a hero. Had Harper ruined that for him? Had she taken that away?

"We'll be fine, Kota." Harper's voice shook, but it was firm. She pushed every ounce of surety into it she could. Harper could see the way Toga flinched from the corner of her eye. Harper wondered if her old classmate had known what she was signing up for beforehand. "Losing a foot isn't enough to stop Bakugo. He's going to get a sick robot one that'll let him kick holes through walls."

Harper wasn't sure that was true, but she had to tell herself that anyway. She wished there was a way to take the injury from him. She wished with everything in her she'd been the one he grabbed. Thinking like that now that it had already happened was fruitless, but the guilt broiling in her stomach continued to tell her that this was all her fault. That she'd caused this. She hadn't killed Atsuhiro all those years ago, and she'd pissed Shigaraki off by taking Kurogiri. She'd dragged Bakugo along to go save Kota, and then Kota along to save Izuku from their fate. And now they were stuck here, waiting for... for what? She didn't know. All she knew was that she wasn't going to be letting them die.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck." Bakugo's thoughts groaned. He was crying too, but not because he wanted to. Harper kept her hands firm on his wound. She didn't think it was bleeding nearly as bad, but his mind was still growing hazier and hazier from the loss of blood. It was a miracle he hadn't passed out. Or maybe he had, for a moment? She didn't know. He was barely hanging on to consciousness. Were he less stubborn, she was sure he'd have been out like a light. "Fuck. My foot. That fucker definitely just took my foot off. God fucking dammit. Fuck! And now Depresso is crying, and I'm crying like a little bitch. If I die here, I swear to fucking-"

He tried to sit up. Harper pushed him back down immediately. His palms sparked more as his rage seemed to grow through the pain. She was glad he could channel his hurt into something that... well, wasn't dying, she guessed. She didn't know. Harper vaguely recognized that she was beginning to hyperventilate. It was pathetic, really. Just what kind of little bitch was she? How could she ever hope to be a hero if she couldn't keep a level head? Kota was still there and was counting on her. Katsuki was too.

"Not your fault." Bakugo croaked out, because of course he would. "Cou... couldn't have known."

"You don't know that." Harper choked out. He grinned at her in a weak way that made her think maybe he wasn't going to make it. The thought was very, very brief. Because just as soon as he did that, her quirk latched onto something like a man starving. Her desperation drew it towards familiarity, and the tell-tale sounds of arguing reached her quirk. But people's thoughts didn't argue with each other. Unless you were a Schizophrenic. Or rather, a borderline one.

"Hurry the fuck up, Toshinori!" The voice of Nana Shimura. "If my grandson hurt those kids, he's going to feel every inch of wrath I have stored away in me tenfold!"

"Of course he hurt them, numbskull!" Who was that? The fifth user? Harper couldn't tell, but she wanted to cry. That meant All Might was here. All Might was fucking here. He was here. And if he was here, so were other heroes. Ones who could make sure Bakugo didn't dramatically die in her arms, and get Kota to safety. "All Might is going to Texas Smash them through a fucking wall. Poor kids-- they had no right takin' 'em like that!"

"I still really hate the USA states and cities thing." Another voice said.

"Literally no one asked your opinion." Another voice chimed, deeper. "Can we just go get them already? I have a feeling one of them lost a limb."

"Your quirk was minor premonitions, right?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Bro."

And then there was a knock at the door announcing a pizza delivery. Harper looked down at Bakugo with wide eyes, Kota weaseling his way under her arm. She hugged him close, trying to convey to Bakugo that they'd be fine whilst also steadying her breathing as quickly as humanely possible so she could be ready. He shakily began to push himself up again, glaring at her weakly when she moved to lay him back down. His arm slung over her shoulders, Kota sandwiched between them. It occurred to Harper that Bakugo wanted help standing. That would mean taking both hands off the wound, though. Harper wasn't confident he'd live through that. He was taking his loss of a foot very well. He didn't look disgusted at all. Just minorly irritated. It reassured Harper's hysterical, scrambled mind that he'd maybe be alright.

"Not your fault." Bakugo swore. Harper swallowed. All Might came flying through the wall to their right. Kota let out a small shriek as bits of debris rained down on them. Harper didn't know how most people felt when they lost a foot, but she had a feeling Bakugo was a whole different breed. "You were in that mar... marble way longer than... than I was. They kidnapped my ass too. We both got fucking caught."

"I appreciate that." Harper admitted as the villains were restrained. She pulled Kota further into her side. He swallowed heavily. Harper took a deep breath. She had been the one Shigaraki was aiming for. She had provoked him. I.e. she should be the one missing a leg at the moment. "But we can argue about this later. After you're not bleeding out."

Bakugo looked moderately annoyed by this but nodded anyway. Harper tried to get her heart to stop feeling so heavy. They were okay. They were going to live. They'd been found in a timely fashion and Bakugo was going to live. She'd just, you know... watched him lose a foot. Which made her want to scream and rip things apart and break plates. She couldn't help but still feel sick. She had never wanted to cry so badly. Harper wasn't going to say it out loud, but she wanted to grab onto Bakugo and never let go. Because he was dying. He had almost died. He could still die.

"Children!" All Might gasped. "Young Bakugo's foot! These bastards!"

And then Harper felt something force itself up her throat. At first she thought she'd finally vomited. And then she'd looked down and realized that it was in fact not bile dripping down her chin, but instead a weird black goo that tasted like tar. She looked up at Bakugo, her own panicked eyes meeting his. All Might lunged as it bubbled up and engulfed her. Harper shoved her cousin into the shaky arms of her blonde friend just as she was swallowed up completely. Kota cried out for her, as did Bakugo and All Might. She thought maybe she'd heard Tsukauchi too. It was impossible to really tell. All she knew at this point that today was a really, really shitty day. And somehow she didn't see that fact getting any better.
