Chapter 53
Third person pov
It was usually pretty hard for Harper to fall asleep. Or it was when she was in the city. Here, she had her own bedroom that she was allowed to retire to. She was out the moment her head hit the pillow, practically. The familiarity this place brought with it was enough to relax her into a steady slumber. The smell, the quietness even with her classmates sleeping across the facility. The thoughts were too dim to make out, and that was all too freeing. Harper'd been worried about the days to become. She still was, she supposed. Tonight, though, she let herself not worry about stress. She just let herself sleep. The exhaustion hiking through the woods had produced certainly helped her drift off.
Normally, Harper woke up a lot throughout the night. Her rest came in increments. Most nights, she got three to four hours on average. On bad days, she didn't get any, and on good ones, she got six collectively. It was all skewed and depended too heavily on the thoughts of those around her. Her parents had tried for years to find something to at least muffle it, but there simply wasn't anything that existed. Harper's quirk was one of a kind. Turning it off with quirk suppressing bracelets was too intense for her. Like going blind in a way. With how used she was to the thoughts of everyone and every animal around her, it sort of made sense. Even Aizawa somehow knew this. Harper didn't want to ask how he did. It was probably Tsukauchi, but Tsukuachi didn't really talk to Aizawa all that much, so it was hard to say. Thinking too much about it would get Harper nowhere. When in doubt, just blame Nezu.
Aizawa wasn't exactly happy to be waking up at ass o'clock in the morning either. Sure, he was still cheerful because optimism was the absolute key to success, and who was he to stand in the way of that? Plus, all his students looked so adorable all sleepy, and in their pajamas! He tried to take a few photos, but he didn't want to get caught. But how else was he supposed to get material for the class scrapbook?! Exactly! As a teacher, he had to do what he had to do. And you know what? There was nothing wrong with that.
Thus, he had to remain positive. There were so many things to look forward to today! One of them being his student's improving. They needed to be able to take care of themselves! How was he going to protect all of them at once all the time! The best thing he could do was get them all in tip-top shape. If they were going to encounter villains, they may as well learn how to win. Harper included. That girl was a walking danger magnet at this point. It was actually terrifying. Aizawa wasn't sure his soft, fragile heart could take anymore from her!
Harper's room was cool, the AC whirring at top speed to keep up with the heat outside. The sun was just beginning to rise over the trees, making the air grow hotter and muggier as the morning dew evaporated. His eyes immediately went to the bed shoved in the corner. Or more specifically, to the lump in the covers sitting atop it. His heart practically stopped! His mind went blank! Hell, he'd even stopped breathing for a second. This was a turning point in history itself. At least, it was in Aizawa's books. Harper Rye was asleep. She was sleeping. Right there, in bed. The waking thoughts that had to have stampeded from her classmate's somehow hadn't roused her out of her slumber. It was... fuck, it was a miracle!
"Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit." Aizawa whispered to himself, very slowly backing out of the room. He closed the door ever so softly, his entire arm shaking from the effort of his slow creep. He had to stay quiet. This could be monumental for Harper's training. One good night of rest could go a long way. He wasn't sure how long she'd been asleep. Maybe a few minutes, maybe an hour, maybe more than that. Point was, she was resting. Resting! He had to all literally everyone and tell them all. Especially Tsukuachi. He'd want to know. Though not as outward about his adoration for Harper, it was there. It was nice to have someone to relate to.
He had to get the other kids out of here. Maybe some would complain about Harper getting to sleep in, but he didn't give a flying fuck! She was tired! Like, more tired than they were! She lacked the ability to get anywhere close to a decent night's sleep. He'd sooner shoot himself between the eyes than risk this. Though the temptation to sprint back to his class and get them out of the building as quickly and quietly as possible, he resisted. Instead, he walked very slowly. Tried to walk on where the solid beams in the floor were so the panels wouldn't creak. He even held his breath for like, half the time he was going back.
1-A was slowly coming to as they tiredly chatted with one another, still exhausted from their trek through the woods the day prior. Dinner had been filling and had definitely helped them get some of their energy back, but the aches and pains still bit at them. Izuku, ever the genius, had snuck in two bottles of Advil and was rationing it out like this was war. Kirishima had watched as Bakugo almost exploded when Izuku offered him some first. Had the redhead not known about the explosive blonde's crush, it would've looked like he was just pissed. Now he could see that it was pent up frustration-- not anger. Kirishima could almost relate. His just... didn't come out hostile though.
"Hey, Mr. Aizawa!" Ochako chirped as the man shuffled into view, looking tense. "Where's Harper?"
Everyone turned to their teacher at that, eyes searching for any signs of their exhausted peer. Harper's presence was pretty noticeable. She gave off a chill vibe that had a warning undertone. Like if she wanted to, she could bite your head off. But she was probably too tired to try. Kirishima loved that about her. Which wasn't saying that much considering he loved everything about her, but still! It was most definitely noteworthy.
"Shut it." Aizawa snapped. It was so unexpectedly aggressive that even Kirishima flinched. "She's asleep.
Everyone quieted down. Kirishima felt his shoulders tense. Asleep? Did he say... asleep? As in, she was sleeping right now? Laying down, not conscious at all, resting? He didn't look like he was joking. His face was dead serious, and there was a threat in his eyes. He was for real right now. Harper was asleep! He could throw a party with how big of an accomplishment this was. How had they not woken her up with their thoughts? Kirishima wasn't the mind reader here, but he knew that some of their classmates had to be extremely loud in the mornings. Mentally, that is.
"Holy shit." Kirishima said under his breath, suddenly afraid to move. Were his thoughts too loud right now? Was he accidentally directing them towards her by thinking about her? What did he do? He needed to meditate. Let his mind go numb.
"What? Why does she get to sleep in?" Kaminari's voice was anything but quiet. Kirishima's head whipped in his direction, his mouth twisted into a frown. He was against ripping people's throats out, but he wasn't going to lie, he was ready to make that sacrifice. Harper was an insomniac constantly on the verge of snapping were life's inconveniences suddenly too much to bear. Even just an extra hour or two of sleep could go miles for her.
"Shut up, you fucking idiot." Bakugo hissed as quietly as he could. It was actually a bit of a surprise to hear him speak up for her, but Kirishima wasn't complaining. Everyone was at least a little afraid of Bakugo, if not completely terrified. If anyone could shut them up, it was him. "Can't you tell by the bags under her fucking eyes? That bitch doesn't sleep."
"Revelry in the dark." Tokoyami seemed to agree. Kirishima eyed him wearily. He couldn't help but wonder if the feathered teen was thinking about My Little Pony or Care Bears right now... That seemed to be a common theme with him, right? From what Harper said, it was. And Koda was probably thinking about murder... that was unsettling. Maybe that's why he and Koda got along so well.
"Yeah, she's always chugging coffee in class. And we're not supposed to drink anything." Mina said, her tone hushed. She glanced from side to side as if she expected someone else to be listening. "If Mr. Aizawa allows her to do it, it must be serious."
"She mentioned once that she normally gets three hours a night most commonly. If she can get rest here, we should definitely let her." Hagakure said, earning several nods and mildly concerned glances. Three hours a night? While going to UA and helping the police? How was she even still alive? Kirishima asked himself this daily. He was beyond proud, but he was also beyond worried.
"You heard her." Aizawa said from literally right behind them. Mina managed to slap a hand over her own mouth before a scream could escape. They whipped around to see him looming over them, looking less like he was about to strangle them if they made a peep and more satisfied instead. "Let's head outside. The further away we are from her, the better."
"Yes, sir." Yaoyorozu and Iida were the only ones who verbally responded, careful to be quiet as to not wake Harper or anger their teacher. Kirishima took a deep breath. Stealth training. They just had to pretend this was stealth training, that was all.
He glanced at Kaminari as Jiro saved him from tripping over his own feet and winced. Easier said than done, he guessed.

"She's dead." Kurogiri breathed for the... what was this? The millionth time, just about? Dabi didn't know, but he was about to burn the man to a crisp if he didn't shut the fuck up and get a hold of himself. He wasn't against arson. He'd done it before, he'd do it again. At the rate Kurogiri was spiraling, they wouldn't make it to the end of the day, let alone the week. She'd only been away for one night. Halfway through the second day of her camp, and Kurogiri was just about fit for a mental ward. "I-I don't know what to do. Where is she? Can I visit her? For a second? Just one? So I can see her?"
"Untuck your tail and take a deep breath, Kurogiri." They'd brought Hounddog in to try and calm the ghastly man down seeing as the pair sort of liked each other, but it didn't appear to be working. Nothing did when it came to Harper. You just had to sit with him and make sure he didn't warp away, really. It was moments like these that Dabi could see why they'd needed to hire someone. His job mostly consisted of protecting Harper's mental health from Kurogiri's overbearing nature at this point if he was being honest with himself. "I'm sure the pup's still barkin' just fine. You still feel emotion, right?"
"Yes." Kurogiri sighed, slumping. Dabi glanced at him for a moment, counting to three in his head. As if on cue, the warp gate user straightened up immediately, his glowing yellow eyes popping wide open and his gaseous shroud expanding. "She's injured!"
Dabi sighed. He wasn't sure what Tsukauchi was doing, but it had to be better than this bullshit.

"Sero, please calm down." Tsukuachi begged, hiding behind the overturned metal table that had just been chucked at him. It had been bolted to the ground. How had he gotten it out of the floor? Had he suddenly just decided he was the fucking Hulk and go full out? Because if he had, that shit wasn't fair. Tsukuachi either needed a raise or an early retirement. Maybe both based on the way Sero was pacing. He never realized how Harper calmed him.
"You guys are just trying to take me away while she's fucking gone, aren't you?!" Sero tugged at his hair, breathing hard as he walked back and forth. This had all be set off by a security guard making some offhanded comment about him being a villain. It had triggered something in him and now he was freaking out thinking he was about to get carted off to god damn Tartarus whilst Harper was out of town. Tsukuachi didn't blame the kid, but that didn't make this situation any more enjoyable.
"Literally we just came here to give you Taco Bell." Sansa noted from next to Tsukauchi, also peeked over the top of the overturned table. Naomasa sighed and massaged his temples. Harper really did do more than they'd originally thought, didn't she? He had no idea how the fuck they were supposed to make it through the week without her here. He'd already called to check up on Stain, who'd scoffed and hung up immediately. Which probably meant he was doing fine. Tsukuachi had no idea. He didn't speak 'emotionally distant, deranged serial killer, ex vigilante' very well.
"I don't want your fucking Taco Bell, okay?! Just-- can you get Harper on the phone?" Sero pleaded, looking pale. Definitely a panic attack. This was fine. Kurogiri had these all the time.
"About that-" Tsukauchi cleared his throat. Sero's expression morphed into one that showed he was less than impressed. "We uh-- we're supposed to leave her... alone to train. We're only supposed to call if it's an emergency."
That had apparently been the wrong thing to say. Tsukauchi and Sansa slowly sunk further down behind the table as Sero's eyebrows scrunched together and his mouth twisted into a snarl.
"She was wrong. You don't care." Sero hissed. "Them trying to take me to prison isn't a fucking emergency? Fine, I'll make you a fucking emergency!"
Sansa let out a shrill scream as Sero ripped the bolted down lamp off his bedside table with no qualms and chucked it. Tsukauchi pulled out his phone, rapidly scrolling through it. He wished he'd put Aizawa on speed dial.

Harper didn't jolt awake like she normally did. She woke up slowly, her mind hazy from sleep. This was different. She was waking, not being woken. It was... strange to say the least. A sensation she hadn't experienced in a while. She rolled over under the covers, feeling toasty, warm, and like she never wanted to leave. The brunette was unconsciously listening for Kurogiri's morning panic attack about whether or not she was breathing while she slept. It was around then that it occurred to her that this was not her bed, and she was definitely not in Tsukuachi's apartment.
The smell of her family's lodge in the woods was comforting. Harper felt reasonably suspicious as she woke up, inhaling the scent of cedar and redwood. She waited to hear her classmates, her quirk picking up on the distant urges of birds nearby and other wildlife. She could faintly hear who she thought might be Tiger. His thoughts were always booming, like they were coming through a speakerphone. It was hard to make out. If she reached, she would probably be able to tell. She didn't want to right now.
Harper let herself fade back into sleep for another hour-- yes, an entire sixty minutes-- before her body woke her up again. This time, it was the type of waking up that didn't leave you groggy. It was the kind that came with a shot of adrenaline that had her swinging her legs over the side of the bed and taking a deep breath. It was actually pretty refreshing. It had been a long time since Harper had felt fully rested. Like she genuinely couldn't sleep anymore even if she wanted. It was enough to make her smile.
She got up, not bothering to change into the training uniform they were supposed to wear. She didn't give two shits. Again, Harper really adored Kurogiri. Tsukauchi, Sansa, and Dabi were all people she obviously cared about. But being away from them was a blessing in disguise. She had slept. Sure, Kurogiri was probably somewhere literally sobbing his eyes out, but that was a problem for future her. No Stain, no Sero, no interrogations. This was practically a vacation.
Harper took her time. She got herself some cereal and sat alone in the silence of the food hall, basking in the solitude. It was so quiet. It made her feel giddy. Just... fuck, her life was so fucked. It felt nice to just sit here and eat her cereal without having to worry about anything. Sure, she was sort of wondering why she hadn't been woken up at the crack of dawn to train with everyone else, but she wasn't about to complain. She was going to take what was given to her and not look too far into it.
She could distantly hear Aizawa's thoughts. Of everyone outside-- excusing Tiger's-- his were by far the loudest as he mentally cheered on everyone in his class. Barring Mineta, whom he seemed to host a special dislike for. Harper couldn't blame him. Even if the little creep didn't actually like women, he was still harassing them nonetheless and making them uncomfortable. All while inappropriately perving on his unassuming male classmates. Maybe he'd be the next problem Harper tackled.
It was pretty hot outside, but Harper didn't mind as she stepped out in her sweatpants and t-shirt Kurogiri had bought for her especially. She wasn't sure why he'd chosen this one in particular. It was literally just a red Coca Cola shirt. She didn't drink Coke. He didn't either. In fact, no one in their apartment did. But he'd picked it out himself and bought it with his own money, so she couldn't really say no. He'd helped her pack to come to this summer camp, so she'd made a point to pack it and promise him she'd wear it in an attempt to make him feel a bit better. Which had worked for a good moment. She was pretty sure that had long since worn off. Oh well-- not her problem.
"Harper, you're awake." Aizawa drawled as she trekked out to where he was standing with her aunt, who beamed at her. "Look at you! You look so cute in your pajamas. And your hair-- cutest mess I've ever seen in my life! I'm so proud of you. Look at you go. Look at her. Is anyone looking at her? I'm looking at you. The bags under your eyes are practically gone. Iconic."
"Morning." Harper answered, offering an awkward smile. Aizawa paused. Mandalay, on the other hand, didn't even hesitate.
"Morning, kiddo!" She chirped, clapping her pawed gloves together happily. "Some detective called the camp while you were asleep! There was a lot of screaming. He seemed pretty panicked. Kept asking how someone without a strength quirk could possibly pull up a bed frame bolted to the floor."
Harper froze, a pleasant smile forming on her face. She was going to beat the absolute everloving fuck out of Sero.
