Chapter 32
Third person pov
Dabi stared at Harper, and Harper stared right back. The scarred man had tried to make himself presentable, but the brunette had insisted it wasn't formal. He'd settled for one of his nicer pairs of jeans and a plain shirt that looked fairly new. In comparison, Harper looked like shit. The bags under her eyes were deep and several unhealthy shades of purple, and she was wearing sweat pants and a hoodie covered in what looked like grease stains, or perhaps nacho ones. Either way, the kid looked like shit. Her hair was a tangled mess even Dabi-- a man who gave no shits, generally speaking-- wanted to furiously attack with a comb.
"You're shitting me." Right. Tsukauchi and Sansa were here too. The look on Dabi's face when she'd walked up with not only a man in a trench coat and fedora, but one with a cat head in a police uniform had been priceless. He'd also been quite perturbed by Kurogiri, who appeared to be using silence as an intimidating tactic. That, or he was once again at a loss for what to say. Neither would surprise her. Honestly, her fake dad and Sansa were more freaked out by Dabi than he was by them. Sansa didn't fail to voice his incredulity. He continued, "This guy? This is the guy you thought'd be good?"
Alright, so maybe Dabi didn't look all that family friendly. So what? He was nothing more than a guy trying to make it in this crumbling economy. Yeah, he'd probably done some illegal shit, but who hasn't in this world? It was dumb as hell how big of a deal they were making of this, just because of his scars. Sansa had a fucking cat head. Kurogiri was a ball of gas shoved in a suit! And as far as anyone could tell, he didn't even have a face! Tsukauchi's best friend was a skeleton that could turn into Johnny-fucking-Bravo for a few hours a day. He literally had dead voices following him around, and they thought this guy was weird?
"He looks like he sells drugs! Do you sell drugs?" Tsukauchi asked, eyes wide and questioning as he reached out and grabbed Dabi by the shoulders. "Is he gay? If he's not gay, I don't want him near Harper. Wait, he could be straight but not a pedophile. What if he's a gay pedophile? Then Harper's safe, but is Kurogiri? Well, he's not a minor, but it's close enough. I don't like this dude. Did he get in a fight with an oven and lose? Wait, that was rude. It could've been a stove top. Fuck, I did it again!"
"No, he doesn't sell drugs. And no, he's not a fucking pedophile. You need to calm the hell down." Harper tugged at Tsukauchi's arm, pulling him away from the stunned Dabi, who blinked down at her owlishly. "He's a decent guy, and is terrifying enough to make for a pretty efficient body guard. You don't have to like him, as long a he does his job."
"What's his quirk?" Sansa asked suspiciously. Dabi was frozen in place. This kid was with the police? They pretty clearly weren't here to arrest his trash ass, which meant there really was a job he could potentially obtain. Protection detail didn't sound like the worst; especially if it were legal. All of that aside, he quite literally had no idea how he was supposed to act. What did he do with himself? This was law enforcement, and he wasn't all that much of a stand up guy, especially where laws were concerned. "This guy looks like a total douche canoe. I never forget a face, but in this case? I'll make a damn exception. What a poser. So what if you've got physical scars? I've got just as many, but you know what, baby? They're all mental. Trapped on the inside, along with the constant screaming resonating in the space my soul used to be! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-"
"Fire." Dabi finally managed to find his voice, snapping Harper away from the god awful sound coming from Sansa's... you know, Harper wasn't even sure the officer had a brain in that furry head of his. And if he did, there weren't all that many cells left in it. She wondered how many mental illnesses he had stuck in there. Sansa was one of the few people she hadn't dug too deep into. She was far, far too afraid of what she'd find.
The scarred man shifted uncomfortably when everyone stared. Blue flames licked at one of his hands as he held it out, heat radiating from the small wisps of fire. It was just as Harper presumed, and based on the intense warmth rolling off it in waves, it was pretty powerful. Perfect for what she needed, then. He could flare up like a torch, and anyone nearby would back the hell off unless they wanted their faces melted off. "I have no idea what the fuck this kid's got me into, but I need a damn job. Preferably one that pays more than minimum wage. I can deal with these lunatics and shoot fire at some assholes if it gets me rent."
"...Sufficient." Kurogiri finally spoke. Dabi hid his flinch well, but Harper and Tsukauchi both managed to pick up on it. Sansa was still mentally screaming, and thus too busy to take note. "I know this body guard is being hired primarily to prevent me from taking Harper Rye or anyone else, but he will also help in keeping her safe from real threats. Though I do not agree that she needs protection from me-- I am the protection, and an ultimate defense, if I am not wrong in assuming my own power's uses-- it will be good for someone else to monitor us and our surroundings. She is now on the League's radar thanks to not only her actions, but me as well. I will take any help in watching her that I can get."
"Alright, alright, let's just take him down to the station and do the interview there. You said you trust him?" Tsukauchi asked, shaking his head. "She never said she trusted him. If she says she does when she really doesn't, my quirk will pick it up as a lie. If she doesn't really have all her faith in him, I don't want him to be her protection detail. I want to get someone she can really count on! She deserves it."
Harper held back a curse. Fucking great. He was sweeping her for lies, which meant she had all of ten seconds to put as much trust as she could actually muster into this questionable man who was apparently the extremely-traumatized older brother of one of her classmates. Harper's quirk allowed her to be a good judge of character, because she saw the most honest part of a person. Dabi-- or perhaps she should say Touya-- didn't seem like the worst person on the planet. He wasn't the best, but he was a genuine young man looking for a job that didn't force him to break the law. He was someone she felt she could trust. Maybe not a whole lot, but enough. If you gave him a job, he was the type to simply buck up and do it.
A lot of her trust was actually in Shoto Todoroki, which was odd to say considering how little he had to do with this current situation. He'd undergone his father's wrath, but was a good person from what she could tell. In desperate need of therapy, but a nice guy as far as teenagers went. A bit closed off, but that was to be expected. He'd been getting better since the festival, and had been actively texting her updates on his state. Mostly because she threatened him in his hospital room, but that was besides the point. He'd turned out alright. That meant there was a chance Dabi had too.
"Yeah." Harper sighed, and Dabi's brows shot up in surprise. "Yeah, sure, I trust him."
Tsukauchi waited for his quirk to give any sort of quiver, but it came up dry. Nothing. Completely blank. Even Sansa looked surprised, and the shrieks that had long since taken the place of his presumed soul were still ringing at full volume. Harper was surprised he could think at all with that amount of noise. Then again, Kaminari could apparently go about his day like a moderately-functioning human being with a... unique, hybrid Wii-remix blasting in his brain. Not the smartest or most rational one, but a human being nonetheless.
"...Alright. Let's go ahead, then." Tsukauchi turned to Dabi with an unperturbed smile, an unsure tingle within him still residing, but most of his doubt having diminished. "My name is Tsukauchi Naomasa. Harper here's my daughter. I look forward to working with you in the future."
Dabi tentatively reached out and shook it, seeming surprised by his sudden acceptance. "Wow. This is fucking happening. He's just going to go off this kid's word. She doesn't even know me. Why's she giving me a chance like this? I guess it's not like I'll be guarding her. Still, this guy's putting a shit ton of faith in the word of a kid. I'll obviously do the job, but if I were a worse person..."
"Yeah, well I don't." Sansa turned on his heel and started to strut away like he as on the runway. "I'll see him in hell. He's taller than me now, but when the time comes, I'll be looking down him... from atop my throne."
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Dabi. I hope you can obtain your desired position." Kurogiri held one hand out, the other resting on Harper's shoulder. The brunette wasn't amused. "I must evaluate him further. How does one tell a good person from a bad one? Sansa looks like a rather polite fellow despite what an utter shithead he is once you get to know him--"
"Yeah, same here." Dabi nodded in an awkward but polite way. Yeah, Harper hoped he'd drop that bullshit. Formal didn't fly in their little hellion group. "This is fucking trippy. This weird ass kid may have actually gotten me a job. Why's she wearing sweat pants to a precinct? Maybe she doesn't work there. The Detective is her dad, so she could go there with him at times. I don't see why she wouldn't be at school, though. I swore she was in the UA Sports Festival. Haven't I seen her in their preppy ass uniform? Is this an internship she's on?"
"Alright, ladies. You can have your damn tea and crumpets later. Let's get a move on. The sooner we get this shit over with, the sooner I get a nap." Harper jerked her head towards the stairs Tsukauchi and Sansa were trying to go down in sync while singing the cup song. Why, Harper wasn't sure. She didn't really want to know either. Some questions were better left unanswered. This was the case with most of the inquires Harper came up with in correlation to the people she ran into.
Dabi lagged slightly behind, uncertain as to what he was meant to do with himself. Harper was dreading having to sit in the middle of the back seat. There was no way in hell she'd lean up against Dabi if she needed some extra shut eye, and letting herself slouch into Kurogiri would only get a teary overreaction out of him. Were she a braver person, maybe she would've forcibly kicked Sansa into her place, but he'd throw a literal hissy fit over it. That was something none of them really needed to witness right now. Harper was too tired to spray him with a water bottle multiple times in rapid succession to get him to submit.
Dabi still didn't know what was happening. He was moderately dumbfounded by the entire experience as a whole. How was it that he'd, somehow, managed to become neighbors with a little shit of a teenager who acted like she didn't care about anything, but evidently did if the effort she was putting into getting him this job was anything to go off of, a police officer with a cat head, an overly-happy detective who was apparently the teenager's father, and whatever the fuck Kurogiri was? Well, he supposed it was idiotic to assume they all lived in the same, small apartment, but he'd seen at least Harper, Naomasa, and Kurogiri exit. It was all just... crazy. Totally, batshit crazy.
A part of him couldn't help but hopeful and excited. Though he'd yet to undergo any official interview, he'd somehow managed to jump the first hurdle. It was surprising, but pleasantly so. Seldom did he ever get past the starting obstacle. Hell, most of the time they'd take a single look at him and turn him away. But this weird ass kid had some sway, apparently. She'd said she'd get him a job, and it was starting to look like she genuinely may. It was surreal. All of this was totally out of the blue. It was almost... exhilarating in a way.
The back seat wasn't entirely cramped. It was what some might call 'cozy'; though, not in a good way. Harper couldn't sit in the middle without touching at least one of them. It was only a matter of if she wanted to have awkward contact with Dabi, or if Kurogiri was the better option. He seemed like he was, but then he might go in for a hug, and that was dangerous territory. That being said, Dabi was having a mental panic freak out of some kind. Who knows what touching him would do. "Holy shit, I really can't believe this. This is happening. I just willingly got into the back of a police cruiser, and I may get a job. What if they find out my name? Fucking fuck, I'll be screwed if they do. They'll definitely contact Endeavor if they know I'm his son. Especially when they realize I'm marked down as legally dead."
"Alright, buckle the fuck up. I'm giving you a rundown of their quirks." Harper wanted to get it all done and over with. Plus, it would stop Tsukauchi and Sansa from singing. They actually weren't the worst when you got down to it, but that didn't mean it wasn't cringe-worthy. Dabi was now gazing at her attentively. At least that had peaked his interest enough to stop whatever little rant he was having. "My dad's got a quirk named lie detector. If you lie to him, his quirk will give a ping, and he'll know. Sansa is a fucking cat-- enough said. Kurogiri's quirk is warp gate. It let's him make portals to essentially anywhere. He can go to any place he's been and knows the location of, or he can use coordinates."
"Alright, yeah." Dabi eyed Tsukauchi uncertainly. This just got ten times worse. He'd never actually said his name was Dabi, though. Harper had introduced him, and if she didn't know she was lying, was it really a fib? He didn't think it was if she wholeheartedly believed it to be the truth, but then again, all quirks were different. "What's yours, kid?"
"Oh, I read minds." Harper shrugged nonchalantly. Everyone in the car immediately stilled at the admission. Tsukauchi's eyes went wide, Kurogiri stiffened, Sansa started to silently choke on what could only be a hairball, and Dabi looked like he'd been smacked in the face with a flip flop. All she could do was watch his horror grow as the realization of what she'd just said settled in. Kurogiri was also processing to her left, not having known her actual quirk or the details of it. It was fairly straight forward, and her words had conveyed that. It only took a few moments for it to completely hit.
Kurogiri and Dabi both inhaled sharply before bellowing out-- quite loudly-- "You WHAT?!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You want this asshole to be your bodyguard? We don't even know his name!" The Chief of Police was taking no shit today, but neither was Harper. This man owed her more favors than there were people on the planet, and would continue to if the police continued using her and her quirk to accomplish things in less than half the time they usually would. Most interrogations had been given to her completely, and Stain and Sero were both under her official care. That's where they'd remain, even after the internships ended. "She's shitting me. She wants patchwork over here as her bodyguard? He looks more likely to shank her than he would be the villains he's going to be protecting her from."
"Your bodyguard?" Dabi breathed, more to himself than to anyone else. Harper elbowed him in the side. His mouth immediately snapped shut, and he forced an awkward smile. "What the fuck have I gotten myself into this time? She's a fucking mind reader. She knows my name. I know I've thought about that shit in front of her. Her dad can detect lies, and they want me to be around them all the time for a living? Shitttt."
"I told you, he goes by Dabi. And he's going to be guarding Kurogiri more often than he's going to be guarding my sorry ass, anyway." Harper scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. Dabi side-eyed her, his mind going a mile a minute. He wanted to know why he'd be guarding Kurogiri, why Harper wasn't outing his true identity, why she wanted him to have this job, why, why, why. She understood his need for answers, but the guy seriously needed to tone it the hell down. She was doing him a major solid here.
"I know what he goes by. But is that his name?" The Chief's eyes narrowed. Harper knew well and good Tsukauchi was hovering outside the door, ready to call her out on a lie if the need arose. Kurogiri was with him, freaking out over her quirk. He was alternating between calling her amazing, not really minding, and panicking over all the shit she'd heard. He was actually more concerned about the fact that she now knew his plans to bake apple pie this weekend more than anything else. The Chief continued to glare. "Brat's lying. She can't really trust this chump, right? She's a valuable asset to the precinct. The officers all love her, and she gets shit done. Even I've grown fairly fond of her. I don't want her stuck with some wannabe goth when she could have a real pro on her."
"That's what I've been calling him, isn't it? That's what a name is, right? Something you call someone?" Harper sat up straighter as she said this, her own eyes narrowing stubbornly. The dog-headed man in front of her didn't waver, but she did feel surprise flicker through him as the tension in the room thickened. Dabi was awkwardly silent, having no clue what he was supposed to say, if anything. Harper grit her teeth. She was entirely done with today. Entirely done! Could they just cut to the chase? This was who she'd chosen, and that was that. She'd beat anyone else with a stick until they went away.
"Don't push your luck, Rye. Your safety is more important than you think. I'm almost inclined to assign one of your own teachers to you." The Chief folded one paw over the other. Harper pressed her lips together firmly. Hound Dog and Cementoss? She'd bite. But anyone else and she'd sooner give herself up to the villains. "We don't know who this guy is. Without a real name, we can't pull his records. I have a feeling trying to identify who he was before those scars won't be easy, either."
"You want me to have a protection detail. Someone who is around me, a person who loves being alone, almost twenty-four hours a day. Now I have come to you on my damn own, not fighting it, not complaining about it, with someone whom I have chosen myself. He has a powerful quirk, he's tolerable, and though I trust Kurogiri more than I trust him, at least I know he'll burn the face off anyone who tries to disintegrate me. So can you hire the damn man and call it a day already?" Harper snapped out, done with this bullshit and wishing the day was over. She was still in the clothes she slept in last night, and had no plans to change out of them. She'd picked Dabi to be her bodyguard, and that was that. No huge-ass fucking debate needed. There was other shit on her agenda.
Due to the whole Iida incident the day before, they hadn't gotten the chance to interview Stain's son. That meant they'd have to today, after Harper could get this all done and over with. Harper didn't want to. Obviously, she was more inclined to call it a day and collapse in her bed. That, however, wasn't an option. She'd told Stain she'd do her best to be the one to talk to his son, and so that's what she'd be doing. That didn't make it suck any less, however. Just because she was choosing to keep her word didn't mean she was going to enjoy it. The brunette was simply going to get this shit over with so she could go home. Plus, a part of her was curious. Was there another Stain in the works, or was his son not following the same path as his father?
The Chief stared at her, stunned. Dabi was having a similar reaction, his lips parted in surprise. His entire body had gone entirely tense, "Who the fuck is this brat? She just ground the Chief of Police into the dirt, and got me a job. Just... holy shit! This is insane! Who is this kid?! No wonder the villains want her gone. She's fucking terrifying when she wants to be. Reminds me of Natsuo in some ways."
"...Fine" The Chief finally choked out. "God dammit."
Harper sighed, leaning back in her seat and massaging at her temples as the canine-like man opened one of his drawers to retrieve the needed papers to make things official. Dabi was still gaping at her in the same way he had when he'd learned of her quirk, which both he and Kurogiri had been informed to keep strictly private. Outside the door, Sansa and Tsukauchi were whisper-arguing, which wasn't effective considering her quirk. All the girl could really do was turn to look at the ceiling, once again finding herself questioning how she'd gotten here. And more importantly, how she could get out.
Somehow, it didn't seem like there was an escape.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hirotoki, Stain's son, lived in a quaint little house with his mother and three dogs. Looking at him and knowing he was Stain's son, you could see the resemblance. He hadn't seemed all that surprised when they'd come to the door, his face forlorn as he quietly invited them inside. He'd inherited his father's height, his brown hair, and even his red eyes. Harper couldn't say he had the guy's nose, seeing as Stain had lost his back in his vigilante days, but she had a feeling she was looking at someone who easily could've passed as a younger version of the Hero Killer. Though, maybe a bit softer around the edges. His face was far more open than his dad's.
They sat tensely, the two of them having gone into the living room area to have a chat. Tsukauchi and Sansa were lecturing Dabi on everything he needed to know about being her bodyguard in the foyer, and Kurogiri was taking notes. Hirotoki had looked a bit weirded out by that, but Harper had shook her head. A silent message not to ask questions. Luckily, he'd heeded the warning and carefully let her to a place where they could sit across from one another. After refusing his offer of tea as politely as she could manage, the pair had fallen into silence.
Harper honestly didn't know what to think about this kid. They were the same age, but he seemed... different, somehow. Maybe having a villain as a father did that to you. He didn't appear to be angry, or to share his father's beliefs in any way. His thoughts were just as quiet as he came off outwardly, which was rather odd all things considered. Most people weren't like that. Aizawa portrayed himself as stoic and serious, but was bubbly and happy on the inside. Present Mic was almost unbearably loud, but it caused his thoughts to be on the softer side of things. Bakugo seemed relatively hostile in his intentions, even though he never meant things to come out that way. Koda was nice and shy, but was secretly plotting to kill everyone.
"I-I saw the news. Is that hero going to be okay?" Hirotoki piped up hesitantly after a moment, nervously threading his hands together. He was a pretty large person. Not fat, but with a large but lithe frame that towered over most people's. It was off-putting to see someone like that be so soft-spoken. He was hesitant, and kept averting his eyes due to nerves. He didn't act anything like his father. "I hope so. I'm glad they caught dad. I'll... I'll miss him, but he was h-hurting people. I don't... I should've..."
Hirotoki loved his father. Though he only saw him a few times a year, he'd come to love the man. He kept his son out of all his vigilante and villainous business at any and all costs. Even with Hirotoki tried to mention it, he'd avert the subject completely. The version of his father he knew was far different than the one the news portrayed. His father left letters on his windowsill, talking about how proud he was of him, and how he missed him, and how he'd tried a new food, or how he'd seen something that reminded him of Hirotoki. His visits were full of him ruffling his son's hair and taking him out to small ice cream shops or cafes, clad in casual clothing. Hirotoki didn't know Stain. He knew his dad, Chizome Akaguro.
"Native is just fine. Your dad's doing good too. I got to talk to him a bit. He's worried about you, and entrusted me to deal with any matters concerning you in his case." Harper spoke, cutting off his doubtful thoughts. Hirotoki looked surprised at that, his adam's apple bobbing as he gulped. Harper had honestly expected something more from the guy. A bit of crying, maybe some anger of some kind. But no. He was just sitting here, resigned. "I don't want to bother you more than I have to. Just give me a rundown of your relationship with your dad, and we can leave you alone for now. I'll contact you about visitation at a later date, if you want."
"I-I... my dad is a villain, but she's still being so... so nice about it. I'm... I'm surprised. And glad." Hirotoki smiled a small smile, lowering his gaze to his hands. Harper waited patiently, pen at the ready. "A-Alright. I uh... he and my mother met when they were really young. She doesn't know... sh-she doesn't know he's still in my life, or that he's the Hero Killer. Sh-Sh-She and my dad had a falling out b-before I was born..."
Harper nodded and began to write, only to do a double take. She swallowed back the heavy sigh that threatened to escape her. He was crying, and if she was going to be completely blunt here, she wasn't surprised.
