Chapter 8. I'll do both.
"Morgan?" she gives me a sly smile. "You scared me, Jesus."
I say letting out a breath and closing the refrigerator door. She really did scare me. I make my way to the island table and lean my elbows against the marble platform. This is a nice island for a fraternity.
"What brings you here?" Morgan asks. I jump a little, I wasn't expecting her to continue talking to me. "I wouldn't have thought this your typical scene... or outfit."
I look down at my attire and blush, I almost forgot I was wearing this.
"Yeah well-" I stop myself, I can't tell her why I am really here. "My friend dragged me here. Why are you here?"
She fiddles with the island marble and shrugs her shoulders.
"It's the beginning of the year party,"
"The party for a college,"
"Yeah but it is better than those in town. A friend of mine goes here and is a part of the fraternity so..."
"Ahh." I understand.
"I got to say, that outfit is the last thing I would picture someone like you wearing." she says.
"Someone like me?" I ask.
"Oh don't do that, you know what I mean." I can't argue, I do know what she means. This isn't my scene or an outfit I would wear. I don't know what I am doing here, wearing this, I should have never listened to Jaime.
"Well I wouldn't have pictured this as your scene either," I say.
"Oh is that so?" she asks.
"It is, you don't look like a fraternity party going girl," I say gesturing to her outfit. She is wearing a black lacey top with short black cut shorts with black leggings under covering her skin, and to top it off, she is wearing black combat boots. Black everything.
"What is my typical scene? A dark alley filled with emo's getting high and cutting themselves?" She raises a perfectly threaded eyebrow.
"No- I didn't mean.. Not that- I'm sorry." I apologize. She begins to laugh and I am left confused. Did I not hurt her feelings?
"I was joking! But god did that scene sound like a dream," she looks enchanted and I am left frozen.
"Again, joking!" she laughs. "Loosin up a bit."
I smile and begin to laugh at her joke. It isn't really my sense of humor but it was sort of funny the way she sounded serious then wasn't. She has a sarcastic sense of humor, I should keep that in mind.
"You should come join me with my friends." she smiles.
"Oh no, no thank you but-"
"Oh c'mon, because your schedule is so busy?" she gestures around us. She laughs lightly and grabs my forearm, dragging me out of the kitchen and into the living room.
"No no Morgan it's fine I really don't want to." I insist. She is pushing her way through people to get to the stairs that lead to the second floor like it is nothing. I guess she is use to this.
"Just come, you have nothing to do. It'll be fun." I try to get my forearm out of her surprisingly strong grip but it seems impossible.
I finally stop resisting and just follow Morgan up the stairs, how bad could this be? Like she said I have nothing else to do, Jaime is mingling and Morgan is the first person at this party other than Jaime that I recognize. I may not have talked to Morgan other than the time her and Henry Dean asked to borrow a pencil and piece of paper but that is better than nothing right? She is acting like we've talked more than that anyways.
"I really don't think I will fit in with your friends." I say rubbing my forearm in gentle, soothing motions. She is stronger than she looks.
"You'll be fine, we're not from a different planet."
I try to get that through my head, but once we reach the open space at the end of the second floor I simply can't. There are about 6 people all sprawled and scattered on the floor and couch. Each and every one of them with more tattoos and piercings than the other. I look at each and everyone of them, and my eyes freeze when I see the familiar boy on the couch wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. It's Henry Dean. He is laughing along with the brunette on his lap, lightly rubbing his hand on her thigh. For the first time I notice how many tattoos he has.
"Hey Mila, who's that?" a boy with creamy olive skin asks, getting up from his spot on the floor.
"This is.." Mila? Her first name? Morgan gestures over to me and raises her eyebrows.
"Lizzy," I say. "Elizabeth Woolridge Grant."
He lightly smiles and offers his hand out to me, I shake it and am surprised by how cold his hand is.
"Well Lizzy Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, I am Jared." he smiles. "I'm sorry, my cup is quite cold."
He brings up his red cup with his left hand and I nod in understanding.
"It's okay," I assure him.
Morgan- Mila, then introduces me to the rest of the group, who all smile and nod their heads up at me or wave instead of getting up to greet me like Jared did but that is okay. I didn't expect them to, I didn't even expect Jared to.
"Leave it to Mila to invite an uptight priss to join our group." the girl on Henry's lap says under her breath. I almost say something in return but decide to bite my tongue instead, I don't need any problems. Uptight? Priss? How on earth am I uptight and prissy? And even if I was, how do I give off the impression that I am? I mean look at my outfit.
"Lizzy over there is Sam," Mila gestures to blonde sitting on the floor. I recognize her, she was the one that wore a see through v-neck. The outfit she is currently wearing makes her see through v-neck look like a potato sack.
"That is Jules," she gestures to the red head with freckles and green eyes. "Ian." the dark haired boy with tattoo sleeves wearing a smirk that could make a nun rethink her lifestyle. "Blake and Jackie"
Sam, Jules, and Ian I all recognize from school, but Blake, Jackie and Jared I do not.
"Blake, Jackie and Jared go to college here," Mila answers my silent question. I nod in understanding and look away from the group and back to Mila. "And so does Marina, and you already know Henry." she smiles.
I assume this Marina is the girl on Henry's lap who made the comment about me being uptight and a priss.
"Well c'mon, sit." Mila grabs my arm and drags me down with her to the floor to sit with her. I awkwardly do, and tuck my feet in as a lay on my the side of my left thigh.
I look around and see everyone is in their own conversations with each other. Sam, Jules, Blake, Jackie and Mila are all in their own conversation and I keep trying to think of way I could join, but just can't. I knew this would be a disaster.
"What are you planning on majoring in?" I look around and to my surprise, Jared is taking a seat on the floor next to me.
"What?" I ask.
"Your major, for college, what are up you planning for it to be?" He asks again kindly.
"Oh," I say. "English."
"An English major huh?" He smirks.
"Yes," I say.
"That is what I am majoring in," he smiles.
"No kidding?" I ask. He smiles and nods, taking a sip of his drink afterwards.
"No kidding, you'll love it. The English professors are really great." he says. "I mean, if you are planning on going here."
I smile and nod my head.
"I actually was, considering I mean."
"You should, BU is a really great university." he says. I'll admit Breeland University was one of my top choices on where to attended college, but mother says I could do so much better. Harvard is her top choice for me, but Breeland University is where my father attended college and is a very respected university.
"I wouldn't have guessed you as an English major," I gesture to Jared.
"Oh really?" he raises his eyebrows. "Was it these?" he asks, gesturing to his tattoos. My expression grows horrid. I did it again.
"Oh no no no I didn't mean that, I just meant-" he laughs.
"No Lizzy it's okay, I get it quite a lot." he continues to laugh and takes another sip of his drink.
"No, I just- You don't seem like the English majoring type." I say. He smiles and I can't help but look down in embarrassment.
"Truth or Dare guys," I hear Jackie say. Truth or Dare? Isn't it a little immature to be playing Truth or Dare in college? Everyone soon turns their bodies so that we are all facing each other and Jackie is the first to speak up.
"I go first." she claps her hands together.
The games goes on for about a good 10 minutes. Most of the group chooses Dare and are almost always dared to do something that includes alcohol. Through out the entire game, I would catch Henry Dean staring at me, and when I would, he would make no effort to hide that he was. That is what bothered me the most. His face would show no expression, I wouldn't know if he was happy or sad, he would just stare. Like I was a lamb and he was a lion, and he was deciding whether to kill me or not. I would catch myself staring back at times, and when I would look away after a while he would smirk lightly to himself. Like he won an unspoken contest.
"Marina, Truth or Dare?" Sam asks, breaking me from my train of thought.
"Dare of course."
"I dare you to kiss Henry." Marina scoffs.
"That's the best you can do Sam? Really?" I catch an accent from her before she grabs Henry's face between her hands and I look away. The way she is kissing him is too intimate to be doing in front of others, but she really doesn't seem to care. I look up once again at them before I hear a pop sound of lips parting. I look at Henry and he is looking back at me, no expression what so ever. I don't know what it makes me feel.
"Libby, Truth or Dare?" Marina asks looking in my direction, cutting my attention from Henry.
"It's Lizzy." I correct her. She rolls her eyes.
"Truth or Dare?" She does have an accent. Welsh?
"Truth." she rolls her eyes again and I hear her murmur "of course" under her breath again.
"Is it true they call you anal girl?" I hear Jared choke on his drink and everyone else laugh, my face heating up immediately.
"No." I answer. I look down and when I look up again, I can see everyone trying to hide their smiles. I look back up at Marina, and she is already looking at me. A wicked smirk on her face."I should go, my friend is probably looking for me by now."
I get up on my feet and Mila follows soon afterwards.
"Lizzy don't go it-"
"No it's fine, I really should go. Jaime is probably looking for me anyways. Thank you for inviting me to hang out with your friends." I say before leaving.
I hear Mila call after me as I walk away and can't get further away from them any sooner. I feel stupid and embarrassed, and I can already feel my eyes growing watery. I don't know why that comment got to me that much, but it did. And the laughing that went on around me didn't help much either.
As I am about to reach the bottom of the stairs, a drunk blonde who is about to make his way up trips, causing the alcohol in his cup to spill all over my shirt.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry" he then looks up at me, making an expression of surprise and tries to brush a hair out of my face. "Hey, you're preeetty." He slurs.
I make a noise of disgust and push him off of me. Great. First I am humiliated in front of a group of people that I did not want to hang out with in the first place, and now this drunk jerk spills his drink all over me. Could this get any worse? No, I take that back. Whenever people say that in movies, television shows and books it usually tends to get worse.
I make my way through the crowded living room for the second time this night and feel a vibration coming from the back pocket of my jeans. I take my phone out quickly and see that it is Nolan who is calling me. I push through the crowd quicker and answer the call.
"Hello?" I ask.
"Lizzy, hey." he says sweetly.
"Hi Nolan, what's up?"
"Oh nothing really." I can hear loud music in the back. "I'm at John Bradley's party"
"John Bradley?" I cross the street away from the fraternity and walk in the direction of where Jaime and I parked.
"Yeah, I know. School night, but it is the first party of the year."
What's the big deal about the first party of the year? Jesus.
"Yeah I know, I was actually going to go, but Jaime and I had a change of plans." I say.
"And by change do you mean a Bones marathon with ice cream?" I grow nervous, even though he is not here asking me to my face.
"Something like that." I cross my arms in effort to keep myself warm but the air hitting my wet 'shirt' is making that impossible.
"I actually wanted to ask you something- I mean, yeah ask you something." he sounds nervous. I can already picture him.
"Okay, shoot." I smile to myself.
"I- I know this isn't the most romantic way to a-ask you, and believe me when I say that I wanted to ask you in person.. But I just couldn't wait anymore." My smile grows bigger and I stop walking all together.
"Uh-hu,"
"I was wondering if-, If you- I mean up if you w-would like to-," he stops and I can hear him sigh. "Elizabeth Woolridge Grant, would you do me the honor of being my girlfriend?"
By now I am ecstatic. I can't stop smiling and I have to cover my mouth to conceal my laughter.
"Lizzy?" he says unsurely. I gather myself together and finally answer.
"Y-yes. I'd love to."
The other end of the line goes silent for a while, and I hear a few movements going on.
"I- I, awesome." He can hear his smile and I giggle."I'll see you tomorrow?"
He couldn't conceal his happiness if he tried, and neither could I.
"I'll see you tomorrow,"
"Bye,"
"Bye,"
"Bye."
"Bye."
I end the call first and throw my hands in the air. Nolan and I are together now. I am glad that I did not kiss anyone else tonight, so glad. have to tell Jaime the news right now. I start walking back toward the fraternity and pick up my pace the more I walk. I don't know whether to scream or run. I'll do both.
An:
