chapter eight: GREEN TEA
The rustling of an unidentified, most likely non-flying, object woke Kenma up with a start. His eyes became large as he shuffled away from his original place and landing on a sleeping girl.
He mentally cursed at himself for being illogical, watching her drool and toss around on the floor.
What the hell happened?
Slowly, Kenma recalled his the past night. All that he remembered was gaming, eating croquettes, tickling and gaming.
Not a very common night for him.
Except for maybe gaming till he fell asleep.
He stood up quietly, not wanting to awaken the resting figure curled up into a ball, deciding to make some tea for her.
That's what you do? Right? Make tea for guests? Wait. What if she's allergic, what if she hates tea? What am I supposed to do then?
Kenma childlishy glared at Miruka, for making him worry and overthink things. He doesn't overthink things, nor does he let girls into his house while his parents were on a business trips.
And he definitely does not tease people by almost letting them win games, on purpose. Now that was something to dwell on.
"Pudding-sama?"
What.
"Oh it's . . . Kenma-kun?" Miruka yawned, stretching her arms an increasingly larger amount than most people should. She glanced at the boy and furrowed her eyebrows. "Why do I smell green tea? Why am I on the floor? Why are you not on the floor?"
He turned his head and gazed at her hilariously messy profile.
Hair strands flew everywhere, and her eyes were looked dreamy and dazed. She sniffed loudly, wiping her mouth. After a few seconds, she had finally registered what had happened and screeched.
"OH MY GOD WHAT AM I DOING?" Miruka shouted, attempting to fix herself. "WAIT DON'T MAKE ANY TEA I'LL DO IT! OH GOD HELP ME, I'M MISSING MY SHIFT AT THE PET STORE AND - !"
She looked at the clock and immediately relaxed, ignoring the shocked expression on Kenma's face. Suddenly, he noticed that he wasn't exactly aiming for the cup with the teapot as he awkwardly cleaned up the spilled tea.
"S-Sumimasen, Kenma-kun," the girl stuttered. "I was confused for a second. Please don't mind me and let me make the tea for you!"
Kenma shook his head. "Miruka-san, it's fine."
"Kenma - "
"It's fine."
"But I drooled on your floor."
" . . . It's fine."
Her cheeks went red as Miruka forcefully rubbed her whole face. "Oh my God, I just drooled. I'm sorry about my terrible sleeping habits!"
"Don't apologise twice."
"S-Sorry - wait - thank you?" she replied, shaking her head. "No problem! N-No that's wrong - I mean of course!"
" . . . Chill."
What felt like an imaginary spear, stabbed at Miruka's stomach, ashamed of her extreme overreaction.
Stupid stupid stupid, she thought. Already messing up and now he thinks you're disgusting!
Kenma simply handed the cup of tea to her, drinking his own smoothly. She accepted it shyly and somehow gulped it in one go.
"Thank you for the tea!" Miruka said, internally screaming from the searing pain on her tongue.
Why, why, WHY?!
They sat in silence, glancing at each other when the other wasn't looking bashfully. They immediately caught each other's eye, turning their head's downwards, blood rushing to their cheeks.
"Thank god it's Sunday, right?" Miruka spoke up, breaking the quiet atmosphere. "Like if we had school, this would be chaotic. Am I right?"
Kenma nodded, placing his and her cup on the counter top.
He fiddled with the sleeves of his sweater which was light green, shifting his weight from side to side.
"Have I added you on XBOX yet?"
Miruka paused for a second and then shook her head, smiling. "You know, we should be exchanging numbers or email instead of gamertags like normal people."
The amber-eyed boy bit his lip, a barely unnoticable blush forming on his cheeks.
"But alas, playing with you is better than typing a few words to each other! So? Name?"
Kenma had not thought of their relationship going this far. I mean, numbers and emails were fine. But gamertags? That was only available to a certain special few.
Not a girl he had known for two weeks.
Without hesistation, despite his thoughts, he typed it in her smartphone's notes quickly. His mind was riddled with questions like 'What if she thought my name was stupid?' or 'What if she doesn't have the games I have and we can't play?'
Things were becoming stressful with her around.
" 'Applepi' is such a cute name!" Miruka complimented. "I'm assuming you like apple pie?"
"Y-Yeah."
There was a small pause in their conversation until the brown eyed girl had to go. She gathered her things and walked up to the door as Kenma simply watched her.
"This - this was nice," Miruka said, looking away. "We should do this again!"
"We should, I guess." Kenma agreed, rubbing his bare arm softly.
Miruka gulped and swooped in on his slightly taller form into a hug. He stiffened, but relaxed in the awkward position as she squeezed him tight.
An exhilirating rush passed through Kenma's stomach, although not like the one battling a boss in his video games.
This was something different.
The sensation ended fast, Miruka letting go with blood rushing to her cheeks and a grin.
She bowed and waved, stepping out into the breezy outdoors. "Arigato, Kenma-kun! I'll beat you one day, so watch out!"
Miruka twirled out, walking with a skip in her step as he gazed at her back, waving mindlessly, with confusion.
And maybe a slowly, very slowly, budding affection had started to grow.
