Bikes and Danger

This is actually based on a dream I had last night. I added some stuff to it cause my dream really only had the plot not all of this.

-----

September 21, 1985

Max, El, and their new friend Lilly were biking back to El's cabin after school on a sunny Friday afternoon.

-----

You see El just started going to school with the rest of The Party this year and Lilly had just moved to Hawkins last August. So, Lilly knew nothing about El's past.

All she knew about El was that she "moved to Hawkins two years ago" and that she was dating Mike Wheeler.

-----

They rode up to the cabin and walked up to the door.

Lilly, a blonde haired and blue eyed girl, looked at the cabin with a confused facial expression. "You live in a cabin in the middle of nowhere?" She asked curiously. El nodded, knocking on the door. "Why? If you don't mind me asking."

El shrugged. "I don't know." Even though she knew exactly why. The door opened revealing Chief Hopper. "Hi, Hop."

"Hey, kid." Hopper looked at the other two girls. "And friends."

"Hey, Hopper." Max said as she walked inside after El, Lilly following.

"Max and Lilly want to have a sleepover." El told her dad. "Is that okay?"

Hopper nodded. "Yeah, that's fine." He looked at his daughter. "I have to go to work. I was called. I'll be home around 11:00 okay?"

"one-one-zero-zero." El confirmed with a nod.

"Do your teachers teach you how to tell time properly?" Hopper shook his head and grabbed his hat off the table. "Anyway, I want you inside at sunset. No going outside after dark. Understand?"

"Yes." El smiled and hugged him. "I understand."

"Good." Hopper moved to the door and opened it. Before he walked outside he turned back around. "And, E-" He glanced at Lilly. "-Jane, if anything happens you call me right away. If you can't get ahold of me, you call Mike."

"Okay." El said and waved. "Bye, Hop!" Hopper closed the door and Lilly watched as El quickly locked all the locks on the door.

The three girls walked into El's bedroom and flopped down on the bed. There was so much silence that it overwhelmed Lilly to the point where she spoke up.

"Jane, is he your dad?" Lilly asked. "You called him 'Hop'. Isn't that Chief Hopper?"

"He's her adoptive dad." Max answered.

Lilly looked at El. "You don't call him 'dad' or any form of dad?" She asked, wanting to know more about her short haired friend.

El shook her head- curls flying around her head. "What are forms of dad?" Lilly's eyebrows furrowed but let the odd question slide.

Lilly shrugged while Max looked at El worriedly. "Um, like dad, father, pops, and papa." El's eyes widened and her breath quickened as images flashed in her head of the man that used her for her powers her whole life.

Max noticed El's breathing so she grabbed her hand. "Breathe. Breathe." El took a deep breath. "Remember, in and out. In and out."

Lilly's eyes widened. "Did I say something wrong?" Max shook her head rapidly. El calmed down and let go of Max's hand.

"No." El said with a small smile. "I just need some fresh air."

"How about a bike ride around Hawkins?" Lilly suggested and the other two girls agreed and went outside.

El picked up her new purple bike she got for her birthday and got on to it. "So just around? No specific place?"

Lilly smiled as they started biking down the road. "Yeah, I did a lot of research and looking around in August. I saw and read about some really cool and interesting places."

"Cool, do you know where they all are?" Max asked.

Lilly nodded. "Follow me. I want to go see this cool place I read about that really caught my attention.

El looked at Max and shrugged before following their blonde haired friend.

-----

El and Max were having a conversation, not paying attention to where they were going, when Lilly stopped pedaling.

"We're here!" She exclaimed and hopped off her bike, walking over to a fence.

Max looked up at their destination and froze, eyes growing wide. "You've got to be kidding me."

El frowned at her best friend before looking up at the place they were at. And God, does she wish she hadn't.

El froze at the sight of the "supposedly" abandoned black building. Fear rose up inside her, chills shot up her spine, and her hands began to shake as she got off her bike. She found it hard to breath as she stood there looking at the sight.

Hawkins Lab.

Lilly looked at them excitedly, not noticing El's frightful expression or Max's worried state. "Isn't it cool?"

"Y-Yeah." Max stammered. "Cool." El didn't say anything but swallow.

"You guys may know this but since you both moved here not too long ago I might as well tell you guys anyway." Lilly turned away from her friends and back to the Lab. "At the library I looked up this place on one of the computers and want to know what it said?"

"What?" Max asked, watching El carefully.

"It said that Hawkins Lab is rumored for keeping children with special abilities and running tests on them." Lilly said. "It also said that they took these kids from heir parents and named them after numbers. It's pretty interesting and cool."

El unfroze and turned to Lilly. "C-can we go somewhere else?"

Lilly frowned at her. "Why?" Realization dawned on her. "They're only rumors. No need to be afraid."

El got back on her bike. "I know but-" she shook her head. "I'll wait for you two on the road."

Max got on her bike and Lilly did too. "Let's go." Max told her friend.

"Jane, do you want to go downtown?" Max asked once they caught up to the telekinetic girl. "Where all those little shops are?"

"By where Joyce works?" El asked.

Max shook her head. "No, the new one. A couple blocks away from Starcourt."

El nodded. "Yes." Before they took off, Lilly asked a quick question.

"Why don't we just go to Starcourt?"

"Too many people." El answered. "Against the rules." She rode farther in front of the other two girls.

Lilly looked at Max. "Against the rules?"

Max nodded. "She's got a lot of rules."

"Such as...?" Lilly pressed.

"Um, well, she can't be out after dark. She can't be alone outside. And unless people are over, she has to stay inside when she's home alone. And last one that's important is she has to have the door locked at all times and must not answer the door unless she hears the secret knock." Max told the blonde.

Lilly frowned. "But why?" Max shrugged and rode up to El, Lilly on her heels.

——— a certain building———

"Is that...?" A man asked the man sitting in a chair next to him in the surveillance room.

The man peered over at the screen. "Yes." He nodded. "Call him in, Roland."

"On it." Roland grabbed his walkie talkie and spoke into it. "We found her." He paused the security footage so you could see the girl's face clearly.

A tall man with white hair ran into the room and looked at the screen. He laughed coldly.

"Well done, boys." He turned to the door and said to the guard, "Gather the men and women that can fill two vans. Tell them to meet me in the front."

"Yes, Sir." The gaurd left the room.

———

"Where should we go first?" Lilly asked. "Gotta admit, it's kind of cute."

Downtown had a nice road with a bunch of different little shops.

El shrugged. "Are you guys hungry?"

"I could eat." Max said and Lilly nodded.

"Okay, I don't think there's a place to eat here." El told her friends, looking around. "Do you guys want to go eat then come back here?"

Lilly nodded. "Works for me." And Max nodded in agreement. They turned their bikes around and started biking away.

———

After the girls ate, they were biking down an empty random road when Lilly stopped biking abruptly, causing El and Max to stop.

"Uh, guys?" Lilly said, staring at what was a little ways in front of them.

"Yeah?" Max answered. "Why'd we stop?"

Lilly pointed to something in front of them. "There's like these white vans just parked on the side of the road over there." She pointed. "And the guy in the passenger seat in the first van is staring at us."

El's breath quickened and she started to shake.

Max's eyes widened as the vans began to move towards them. "Shit." Max cursed under her breath, barely audible.

"What?" Lilly turned to Max.

Max saw the man in the van point at something. Or rather, someone. Max turned to El to see her frozen, eyes wide, and looking at the man that used her all her life.

"We've got to get Jane out of here." Max said. "Now and quick."

Lilly didn't ask anything, just followed her friends who were biking away like their life depended on it.

El looked behind her as they neared the forest where the cabin was hidden and saw the vans following them. She said nothing and pedaled faster.

The vans had to stop when they got to the forest- due to no visible drive way from where they were. The girls just rode their bikes through the place full of trees to the cabin. El nearly fell off her bike by getting off of it so fast.

El ran up the steps, opened the door, and hurriedly ushered her friends inside. She shut the door and quickly locked all the locks.

Lilly watched the chaos of Max running to the windows and locking them and El pacing back and forth with her face in her hands.

"I thought they were gone." El said, looking up, and looking out the window.

"Well obviously they're not." Max said.

"What is going on? Who are these people? Why were they fallowing us? What do they want? Are they going to come here?" She kept asking questions.

Max turned towards Lilly and shouted, "Shut up, and help me lock all the windows!"

Lilly did as she was told but asked, "What, why?"

"Just do it!" Shouted Max causing Lilly to fall silent. "El! Call Hopper and Mike!"

"Wait, who's El?" Lilly shouted.

Max ignored her. "El?!" Not response. "El Hopper!" Max shook her head and dialed 9-1-1.

"Hello, state your emergency." Flo's voice said through the phone.

"Put Hopper on the phone." Max said. "Now!"

"Alright." A muffled 'Jim. Some girl is yelling for you.' could be heard.

There was silence until, "Hello?"

"Hopper!" Max shouted in relief. "Get here as quick as you can!"

"Why? Is El okay?" Hopper asked quickly.

Max looked over at El who was looking out the window. "Bad men. They know where she is." Max looked out the window. "Alert Mike."

Hopper cursed. "Alright. I'm on my way." The line went dead. Max turned to El to see her frozen, eyes wide, and hands shaking.

Lilly stood next to Max. "All windows and doors are locked."

"They're here." El said, moving away from the window and standing in front of her friends.

"Who!?" Shouted Lilly.

"Shut up!" Max hissed. They stayed silent, the only sound that could be heard were feet crunching leaves and twigs.

The girls stayed frozen in a suspenseful silence.

A sudden knock sounded from the door causing all three girls to jump back, away from the door. No one said anything.

Another knock. Not the secret knock.

"Eleven." The cold voice of Dr. Brenner said, making El's blood run cold. "Eleven, I know you're in there."

El, Max, and Lilly stayed silent.

Another knock.

"Eleven, open the door for me." Dr. Brenner said.

"Who's Eleven?" Lilly whispered and Max pointed at- "Jane?!" Max nodded. "But, I thought-" Max nudged her to be quiet.

"Eleven, please." Dr. Brenner pleaded. "I'll bring you home."

Eleven decided to speak up. "Go away."

"Open the door." He insisted. "We just want to help you."

Eleven swallowed and closed her eyes. "I said, go away."

A sigh from outside could be heard. "You leave me with no choice, Eleven."

Suddenly, the door was broken down, causing the girls to scream and jump back.

El's face turned from fierce to fear in a blink of an eye. Dr. Brenner stood in the doorway and behind him stood many of his men and women he brought with.

Some carried ropes and gags. Others carried tasers.

El looked up at Dr. Brenner. "Papa."

Dr. Brenner smiled. "That's right. Very good, Eleven."

El pointed at him and shook her head before saying, "Bad man. You are bad."

This time he frowned. "Where have you learned all these new words, Eleven?"

"School and friends." She stated quietly.

Dr. Brenner nodded. "Let's go home, Eleven."

"No." Eleven glared.

"We want to help you." He gestured to all his people.

"No." El said. "Leave me and my friends alone." His eyes glanced at Max and Lilly before looking back over at Eleven.

To say Lilly was confused would be an understatement. First, her friend she thought was named 'Jane' was actually named 'El'. Then this man comes in and calls her 'Eleven' and she calls him 'Papa'. And, they want to help her with what?

Dr. Brenner took a step towards El. "We aren't going to hurt your friends unless they interfere." He said. "Now, come home to your Papa."

"No." El said stubbornly.

"Do you remember what your punishment is if you say that word?" She didn't answer. "Speak Eleven."

"Yes, Papa." She nodded.

"Good now I suggest you come home." He insisted. "You don't belong here."

El glared. "Yes, I do."

Dr. Brenner raised an eyebrow at her. "Do you now? You're too different. You'll never be normal. We can help you."

El took a deep breath. "I know I'll never be normal." She said. "And I know you don't want to help me."

"Eleven, that's not true." Dr. Brenner frowned. "We do want to help you."

Lilly couldn't take it anymore. "What do you want with her?! Just leave her alone!"

"I told you, Eleven, we wouldn't hurt your friends unless they interfered." Dr. Brenner said coldly.

"No." El muttered as two men surged forward and grabbed Lilly's arms who was frozen and couldn't speak. "Let her go."

"Not until you agree to come with us." Dr. Brenner said.

"No. I'm not going." El said. Dr. Brenner snapped his fingers and the men grabbed their tasers and pointed them at Lilly. "No!"

"Do you agree to come with?" Dr. Brenner said.

"I said, let her go!" El screamed and the two men that were holding Lilly flew into the wall. Then their tasers broke in half.

Dr. Brenner stared at his two unconscious men. "You shouldn't have done that, Eleven. Grab her and let's go."

Men surged forward and made a move to grab her. El stuck out her hands and with a fierce scream, blood trickling out of her nose, sent the men flying out the door and knocking them out.

Dr. Brenner looked at her with amazement. "Incredible." He muttered. "All that and you're still not tired. You have gotten stronger."

Lilly watched all this happen with wide eyes. How did her friend do that without laying a hand on anything?

"Yes." Then with one final shout she knocked her 'Papa' out from sending him flying outside and his head hitting a tree.

She wanted to kill all ten of them. Oh did she want to. But she knew she couldn't because it would be a suspicious move that reporters would want to investigate in.

El breathed heavily before collapsing to the ground in tears.

Max ran to her best friend and tried to comfort her by bringing her to the couch and she rubbed her back.

"Lilly." El said once she stopped crying. "Can you get me some water?"

Lilly nodded, confused at what just happened, but went to the kitchen to grab a glass of water.

———

A few minutes later a car door slammed. Hopper walked up to the cabin to see the door broken down. He sighed and stepped inside, Mike behind him.

El stood up from the couch and stood in front of Hopper. He sighed. "Thank God you're okay." El hugged him tight, resting her chin on his shoulder, and closing her eyes. "I'm sorry I took so long. I picked up Mike first."

El opened her eyes and saw Mike standing behind Hopper with a worried expression. El pulled away from Hopper and ran to Mike.

"Mike." She sighed as she wrapped her arms around his neck and cried into his shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her waist and rubbed her back.

"Shh, El." He whispered into her ear. "It's okay. It's okay."

El hugged him tighter and rested her cheek on his shoulder. She calmed down and took a deep breath. "Papa, he t-tried to take me away. He was going to take me away from you."

Mike ran his hand through her hair. He kept his fingers tangled in her hair as she pulled away a little bit to see his face.

"I know, El." Mike said. " They're gone now. I won't let anyone hurt you or take you back there.

El looked into his eyes. "Promise?"

"Promise." Mike kissed her forehead.

"Wait, I'm confused." Everyone turned to Lilly.

Hopper sighed. "After I get all these bodies locked up, we'll explain, okay?" Everyone nodded in agreement.

----Two hours later----

Everyone- except Hopper who wasn't back yet- were in their pajamas and talking quietly in the living room. Mike had brought his stuff because Hopper had told him that El would want him to stay the night.

Lilly and Max sat on the couch talking to Mike who was sitting on Hopper's chair- reclined back- with El laying on her stomach, on top of him.

El's head was on Mike's chest- her right cheek pressed against it. Her arms were wrapped around his waist and her legs twisted with his. Mike played with his girlfriend's curly, shoulder length, hair as she slept and he talked.

----

Hopper walked through the door, shut it, and locked all the locks. He sat down on the other chair across from the recliner.

"Okay, first, wake her up." He looked at Mike.

Mike frowned. "But-"

"Just wake her up." Hopper interrupted.

Mike shook her shoulder. "El?" She hummed in response. "It's story time."

"Mkay." She moved her head so she was facing everyone but she didn't open her eyes. Mike continued to run his fingers through her hair.

"So," Hopper began. "You know Hawkins Lab?"

Lilly perked up. "Oh, yes!" She smiled. "We rode our bikes down there and looked at the building from the outside and-"

"Hold up." Mike interrupted. "You went to Hawkins Lab and El agreed to it?"

"No, El didn't know where we were going." Max said. "And neither did I."

Mike sighed and twirled a curl around his finger. "They probably saw El's face on the surveillance footage." Mike narrowed his eyes. "So, it's all Lilly's fault why my girlfriend was put in danger."

Max sighed. "Mike, Lilly didn't know." She glanced at Lilly. "And still doesn't know because she's oblivious."

"I don't know about what?" Lilly looked over at Max.

Max thought about what she was going to say. "Lilly, you remember how you said that the Lab was 'rumored' for keeping children and naming them after numbers who have special abilities?" Lilly nodded. "Good. And do you notice that when we went to the Lab today, that El froze when she saw it?"

"Yes." Lilly nodded.

"Well, I'm just going to ask questions for El and you can figure it out." Max said, not really wanting to explain everything.

"Okay." Lilly said.

"Okay, um, raise your hand if your name is a number." Max said. El raised her hand then put it back down.

"I don't understand." Lilly shook her head.

"El, can I ask personal questions?" Max ignored Lilly. El nodded. "Do you want to talk or just keep raising your hand."

El mumbled something to Mike, eyes still closed. "She said she just wants to raise her hand. She's tired." Mike ran his fingers gently through her hair.

"Okay." Max nodded. "Raise your hand if you were taken away from your parent at an early age."

El raised her hand. "What? How old?" Lilly asked.

"Like a few seconds after she was born." Mike answered, El had told him the story.

Lilly mouthed, 'wow.'

Max tapped her chin with her finger. "Who has special abilities?"

El raised her hand.

"And who was raised in a lab for twelve years?" Max asked.

El raised her hand.

"Holy-." Lilly's eyes widened. "It's not a rumor is it?"

"No." El shook her head.

"Wait, what abilities do you have, Jane?" Lilly asked.

El opened her eyes. "Telekinesis and Telepathy. And it's El for you now."

"Wow. Okay, El. Cool." Lilly smiled. "So you can like read my mind?"

"No." El shook her head. "Different kind of telepathy."

Lilly frowned. "What do you mean?"

El looked up at Mike. "C-can you explain everything? I'm tired."

"Of course." Mike said and El moved her head to the other side- not facing anything- and closed her eyes. "She puts a blind fold on and turns on static. Or anything that sounds like that, like showers. She then can visit people in her mind. It's called the void. She can spy on people without them knowing it."

"Cool." Lilly nodded. "So those people wanted her for her powers?"

"Yeah." Mike nodded.

"And that man-" she started.

"Is Dr. Brenner. He runs Hawkins Lab. He made Eleven think that he was her 'Papa'." Hopper said. "He's why she doesn't call me 'Dad' yet. Too many memories."

Lilly nodded. "And is that why El has so many rules?"

"Yes." Hopper nodded.

Max leaned back against the couch. "She knows this much. Might as well tell her everything else but you can't tell anyone, got it?"

"Yes."

"Okay so, El was taken from her mom, Terry Ives, at only at a few seconds old..." Max began.

———

"...And after the Mind Flayer was defeated for the second time, nothing has happened until today." Mike finished.

Lilly's eyes were wide. "Wow."

"Yeah." Mike nodded. "Will she still be able to go to school?" He looked over at Hopper.

Hopper sighed but nodded, standing up.

"Thanks." Mike said. "For letting her still go."

Hopper smiled, kissed the top of El's head, and threw a blanket over her and Mike.

"Get some rest, guys." He said before turning off the lights and going to his room.

Lilly looked at Mike Who was still running his fingers through El's hair and looking down at her with heart eyes.

"So, you really love her, huh?" Lilly asked, covering herself with a blanket.

"Yeah." Mike smiled as El sighed in her sleep and unconsciously tightened her arms around him. "I mean, you heard the story."

"Yeah, Yeah. How you love her and you can't lose her again." Lilly said. "And how she said she loved you too after everything was over and cleaned up."

"Yeah." He pulled the blanket up higher so it covered El's shoulders. "I'm going to go to sleep. Night, Lilly."

"Night." Lilly laid her head down on a pillow.

"And thanks for making sure she didn't get taken away." She heard Mike say.

"No problem." She closed her eyes.

Mike felt El stir. He rubbed her back. "Mike."

"El, go back to sleep." Mike whispered. "You need it."

"I love you." She whispered.

Mike smiled. "I love you, too. Now sleep." He continued to run his fingers through her hair until he fell asleep.

The End.
