Cleo's POV:
I held Joe in my arms as he breathed heavily. He looked at me with a frown as he coughed into his shirt.
" C....Cleo?" Joe looked at me with his shaking form. I nodded at him, " Yeah, I'm here mate... Don't worry." I gently told him as he nodded weakly. Joe's chest area was glowing a dull blue color.
An odd guy with a cape, horns, and pink broke into my base. He summoned Joe in from nowhere and forced some kind of magical entity into his body. Joe screamed in terror and pain as his eyes and nostrils glowed.
I was now holding his shivering form. The mage's magic had dug deep into Joe's organs as he occasionally twitched in my arms. Joe wheezed slightly as I carried him through the server. I managed to get him to the closest location that I could spot.
Grimdog's crypt.
" C...Cllllll..." Joe's voice was growing more raspy as I hurried into the crypt.
" Who dares enter my diggity dog dead crypt!?" Ren shouted in his spooky voice. I rolled my eyes as I put Joe onto my back and carefully propelled down, " Calm down Rendog. I've got a bit of an emergency." I half-sighed half-growled as I came into the dimly light area. Candles lit up the area.
Ren clapped his hands together to cause the lights to come back on. The hybrid's greyed tail shook as his eyes widened at Joe's state. I watched as the color returned to Ren's body as he removed his trench coat from himself.
" Oh my god, Joe!" Ren gasped as he hurried to me and helped to take Joe from my arms. Ren put the shaking hermit onto a bed that was placed in the corner of the crypt. Joe was breathing slowly as his body twitched.
Joe looked at us through barely open eyes. He tried to reach his arm out to us before curling himself up in pain. Ren sniffed at him as his tail twitched, " Joe doesn't smell right." he mumbled as he carefully removed the other hermit's glasses.
" Doesn't smell right?" I questioned as Ren's tail twitched as he sniffed Joe's neck, " Yeah, you guys may not be able to smell it, but each of you have a certain smells that go with you." he explained with a twitch of his tail, " I guess that I never told any of you that before." he mused to himself as he finished up his sniffing.
Ren rubbed at his beard with a small 'hmm'. He frowned as he thought, " That's... weird." he mumbled as he scratched at his tail. I looked between him and Joe. Joe was now fast asleep as Ren covered his body with a red blanket.
" Ren, what do you 'smell' exactly?" I stared at him as his ears twitched. Ren looked at me as his tail twitched, " Has Joe been near some horses recently?" he questioned as I shook my head no. Ren continued to rub his beard as he looked at Joe's body again; Ren turned the hermit onto his side while pulling up his pant leg.
Brown fur.
Joe thrashed slightly as Ren removed his shoes and socks to reveal some black hooves. The two of us looked at each other as Joe shivered slightly. Ren's tail twitched, " This Arthur guy... " he growled as he covered Joe's leg again with the blanket and looked at his head.
Ren moved part of Joe's hair and motioned towards a long, brown ear that poked out of his head. Joe struggled in his sleep as Ren got both of Joe's newly formed ears to poke out. The hermit struggled again as Ren forced Joe to be on his back.
" Why is a transformation spell causing Joe this much pain?" Ren questioned as he looked at me. I shrugged my shoulders as I looked at him, " A spell is more of a forceful attempt to change. The caster could have negative emotions attached to them, and that causes the pain behind the magic."
The dog hybrid tilted his head, " Why would this bad mage harm Joe of all people? I know that he has his moments...." Ren unconsciously rubbed his side with a whimper, " but Joe is a good dude, and we both know that..." he whimpered. The two of us continued to talk as a pain-filled, quiet whine came from behind us.
I turned my head and looked towards Joe. The now hybrid was curled up underneath his blanket and shaking violently. I put my hand onto the lump and gently removed the blanket from Joe.
A child.
A small, horse hybrid child.
" That..." I took my hand off of Joe, " That makes more sense... It explains why he was in a lot of pain and struggling..." I mumbled as I ran my hand through my sleeping friend's hair. Ren and I walked away from Joe and stood in the corner of the crypt.
" Cleo, what do we do?" Ren questioned as his ears went down. I shrugged my shoulders, " I can try to find a spell to fix him, but I don't know about a spell strong enough to heal his pain, turn him fully human, and progress the aging process to its original state."
One of Ren's ears perked up as he thought for a moment. The dog hybrid rubbed at his tail as it shook away from him, " Why not just do one spell at a time?" he asked as he tilted his head. I crossed my arms, " That's a good idea, but what spell goes first? What complications will arise because of it?"
Ren's tail twitched, " Why have to try Cleo... We can't just sleep Joe as this small foal." he looked over at Joe as his ears went back. Joe was awake and freaking out. The horse hybrid's tail was thrashing as he started to whimper and shake.
" Hey Joe..." I spoke calmly as the horse hybrid moved away and against the nearby wall. He stared at us with wide open eyes as his little body curled up slightly. Ren sniffed the air, " He's very upset right now... That horse part of him is new and terrifying him half to death."
Joe laid down and continued to shake as he stared at us; a small whine escaped from him as he shook. Ren looked at me, " Hold on, I got an idea...." he walked behind a curtain and came back in dog form.
I gave him a confused look as Ren put his muzzle onto the bed. The little Joe's eyes widened slightly as he moved towards Ren. I watched as the dog-formed hybrid climbed onto the bed and let Joe nuzzle and hug against him, " Pubby..." he mumbled tiredly as he crawled out of the blanket in order to wrap himself around Ren.
Ren looked at me, " Get rid of the horse side to him..." he whispered as I nodded and opened up my book. I waved my skeletal hand as magic started to flow through the muscles and tendons that kept the bones connected.
The magic slowly started to flow towards Joe as his body briefly glowed. Come on Cleo, you've learned some potions... Now, now you just need to learn spells. The magic continued to wrap around Joe as his legs changed back to normal and his tail left him. Joe's ears were the last to change back as he shuffled slightly.
Ren changed back to normal and put the sleeping, small hermit into his lap. Ren took the blanket and wrapped Joe up into again. I looked at Ren, " We should leave him like this for a few days... It gives both my magic some time to recover, and Joe's body time to recuperate."
The dog hybrid nodded as he slowly got up, " I'll move Joe to my dragon base. He'll be safer there, and he won't get sick like he would here..." he nodded his head. I followed Ren out of the base through a back stairwell that was hidden under his grave.
The two of us snuck back to Ren's dragon base pretty quickly. Ren laid Joe down onto his bed. The dog hybrid kept Joe wrapped up in the blankets, " He's drained... I'll get him some food once he wakes up.." Ren told me as I nodded.
Joe snuffled slightly as Ren sat down next to him. The child put his head on Ren's leg and slept calmly. Ren nuzzled against Joe, " I know that you care for Joe like a brother Cleo, but the other members of the dead team might react badly to me being out of my skin." he tapped his finger against his knee.
I nodded at him slowly, " Take care of Joe then Rendog. I'll sneak over and visit occasionally." I told him as he nodded. We both agreed that the only person to be aware of Joe's current form was Stress. Ren waved me goodbye as he laid down with Joe. After leaving the dragon base, I took off towards the ice castle.
I told the dead ice queen what was happening, and Stress's eyes narrowed in anger, " That horrible, horrible man! Ah can't believe that he would harm Joe like that!" she hissed as icicles started to grow out of the ground.
" Yes, Stress, but Ren and I have it under control... We just need your help in watching after him." I explained to her as I shivered in the cold. Stress noticed my shivering as the room seemed to warm up.
Stress sighed, " You should head home and warm up dear. I'll head over to the dragon den and check up on Ren and little Joe." she stretched slightly as I nodded. I waved goodbye to Stress as I left her base and took off into the sky towards my own.
