A Bit Stressed

Author's Note: Another oneshot for this October season. I will go ahead and say that I may not do something for the exact date of Halloween due to how I'm going off to a party with a friend. Enjoy this story though.

 Ren's POV:

It was almost midnight. 11:30 pm to be exact. I was in my base, and I was curled up in my bed and snuggled up against my fluffy and heavy pillow. I was half asleep when I was called by my best bro Iskall. I admit that I still had drool dripping from my mouth when I agreed to meet Iskall at Stress's ice fortress.

And..... Here I was. In front of Stress's castle and waiting for the Swede with the glowing eye piece. I watched the clouds and up at the full moon that lit up the sky like giant sea lantern. The reflective rock gave me just enough sight that I didn't need night vision. It also allowed me to see Iskall diving down.

I quickly leapt out of the way and landed on all fours as Iskall tumbled onto the ground. Iskall leapt up and nervously looked at me, " Sorry for that landing, Ren. I'm still a bit tired." he rubbed his knuckles together. I nodded at him, " You're fine my dude!" I grinned as Iskall look out a torch and struck it against the bottm of his boot. I looked at him, " Real atmospheric Iskall..." I mused tiredly as he nodded.

" My I ask why I was called out here?" I questioned as I followed behind Iskall. The Swede walked into the fortress with the torch held above his head. I tiptoed behind him as my tail twitched and remained down, " Stress called me, and she started to gasp for help and growl. I tried, desperately, to get information out of her, but it sounded like her home was being ransacked by wolves." Iskall turned down a hallway, " The next thing I know I hear howling, and the communicator gets cut off."

That's.... odd. I know that Stress had those dogs from the Civil War, but they were all at my little cave after Stress gave half to me, half to Tango, and some to Joe. Did she keep one of them around?

Iskall raised his hand causing me to stop, " Do you hear something?" he questioned as he lowered his voice. The hermit raised his hand to his eye and dimmed the light on it. My ears twitched as I looked around.

 Yes.

I heard something. It wasn't the soft cracks from the ice breaking, or the sound of us walking, no. No, it was the sound of an animal. The desperate sound of an animal trying to escape and scratch its way out of somewhere.

Did Stress keep animals here? I know that there were those pink mooshrooms, but she moved them to more purple pastures in another world. I frowned at my tail twitched, " Yeah, I hear something...." I finally told Iskall causing him to nod.

" Which way is it coming from?" Iskall questioned as he moved the torch around. My ears wiggled as I motioned up, " There..." I pointed as Iskall motioned for me to follow. He walked towards a winding staircase, " I know this place like the back of my glove." he smirked as he went up the stairs. I nodded and went after him.

We came to the second floor and looked around. The walls and flours were covered in scratch marks that dug a full two inches into the stone. I looked around nervously as my tail twitched more. At the end of the hall, I saw a large, furry animal ripping open something.

I looked down at Iskall as he gulped and took out his sword. I took out my sword as well and sniffed the air, " That's some kind of dog." I whispered to him as he nodded. The canine raised its head as it turned to us. Its eyes glowed in a mix of red and icy blue causing my whole body to shiver. Iskall raised the sword towards the dog-like creature.

" What do we do?" I questioned as Iskall glanced to me, " We run." he simply told me as we started to quickly move away from the canine. The large creature stood up and howled before bounding towards us. I let out a yelp as Iskall put his sword away and yanked me up the stairs.

The two of us ran with the wolf chasing us. It slammed into the corners but managed to keep right on my tail. The two of us managed to get into Stress's potion room with a large stain glassed window within it. The moon casted a light into the room that caused the whole room to be a dark pink and blue.

We worked on blocking the door with the many bookshelves that lined the room. Iskall looked at me, " I'll help Stress clean up after..." he sheepishly smiled as I nodded. My ears twitched as the two of us took some large steps away from the door.

 Scratch.

 Scratch!

 Scratchscratchscratch!

My ears went back as claws went through the door. I looked at Iskall as he hurriedly tapped the side of his head. The list of people online appeared in holographic fashion.

 Stress, Iskall, me.....

 Joe.

Iskall's eye widened as he quickly called Joe. The growling and howling grew louder as loud thuds came from the door. Iskall tapped his foot on the ground, " Come on come on..." he mumbled as he kept quickly jerking between looking at the door and the holographic image.

My ears went down as I stood in front of Iskall and stared at the door. The howling grew more desperate as Joe finally picked up after a few agonizing minutes passed.

" Howdy you've reached Joehills." Joe greeted with his usual cheery voice. I kept looking at the door, " J-Joe. There's this monster is Stress's base! " he stuttered as he started to explain how we got into this situation.

Joe let out a sigh, " Look, I'm by a bed. I need ya'll to get that wolf into a room with a window or out in the open." he explained as I looked back.

" A-are you insane?" Iskall and I both spoke at the same time. Joe shook his head, " Just trust me. " he told us with a shake of his head. I looked towards the door. The hinges were already being snapped off the wall.

Iskall and I took a step back, " Break the window." I quickly told Iskall. Iskall frowned but then nodded. The Swede hurried over to the stained glass window and broke it. I looked at Iskall, " Go to the corner.... I'll.... I'll hold 'em off." I told him as he nodded without argument.

The door felt like it exploded off its hinges. I dodged the tackle from the wolf and struck its back with my foot. It howled and tried to attack me again. I continued to dodge as the wolf clawed and snapped at me.

" Anytime now!" I shouted as I dodged another blow. Joe let out a low sigh, " Get her into the moonlight!" he shouted back as I shook my head. I looked at the wolf and towards the light. The wolf tackled at me as I rolled below her and stood in the moonlight.

The wolf charged at me again as I stood still.

" NOW!" All three of us shouted as Joe hit the bed. The world was flashed with bright light causing the wolf to stagger back and freeze up in the sun. I breathed heavily as I looked at the wolf.

Slowly, ever so slowly, the wolf shrunk down and lost its fur. Iskall took a step forward and quickly grabbed the wolf before she hit the ground. My eyes widened as the wolf shrunk down into a tired, barely awake Stressmonster. Her pink jacket was utterly destroyed, but her white shirt remained only slightly scathed.

I opened up my inventory and handed Iskall a blanket. He quickly wrapped Stress's body up into a warm ball. Stress put her head on Iskall's shoulder as he picked her up, " Joe, can you please explain this?" I frowned as my tail twitched. Iskall carried Stress down the stairs and out the gate. The two of us took off into the air and towards Iskall's mooshroom-y base.

" Stress was looking up things about animals. She found this feral dog with some sort of magical capabilities.... I didn't think much of it during the day when ah accompanied her to the gamin' district, but that's when this happened." Joe sighed.

We landed at Iskall's base, and he took her down into his guestroom. He laid her down and put an ice pack over her forehead, " What do we do, Joe?" Iskall asked in a nervous tone. Joe frowned, " There ain't much to do... I may see if Jevin or Cleo know anythin' about potions. I honestly don't really know what to do though." he shrugged his shoulders.

Joe signed off from our chat. This left Iskall and I alone. I let out a sigh as I sat down on the floor. My tail curled around me as I laid down, " I'm going to keep an eye on her." Iskall mumbled to me with a nod of his head. I started to fall asleep as a blanket was draped over me by Iskall.

" Get some rest, Ren. Thanks for coming with me...." Iskall let out a small laugh as I nodded. I curled up and fell asleep on the warm floor of Iskall's base.
