overdue || guy germaine

y/n has been waiting to check out a certain book from the library for months. coincidentally guy germaine, has had that book shoved in his locker for just that amount of time.

you walked into the library before school, just as you did every week, to see if the book you had wanted was finally back in. you jokingly strutted over to the front desk, seeing the librarian groan once he noticed you.

"hey, thomas. got my book?" you questioned, using his first name for the sole purpose of further annoying him.

he let out a sigh, before plastering a facetious smile on his face,"oh, y/n. what did i do you deserve your presence every week?" his face fell flat, his eyes mirroring that of a beggar's,  "seriously. whatever i did, i repent. please god, make it stop."

you chuckled and rolled your eyes at his antics,"well...is it in?"

a few 'that's what she said' jokes chimed out from the computers nearby, causing you to exhale a light laugh. you were a sucker for a good that's what she said joke.

"obviously not," he replied, looking at you blankly,"it's hasn't been in the last ten weeks you've asked, why would it be in now?" mr. mcnall asked rhetorically, praying that you wouldn't answer.

that was his last name. mcnall. thomas mcnall, the humble librarian from edina minnesota. the perfect thriller movie, waiting to be filmed.

you let out a sigh, running a hand through your hair. all you wanted to do was read a stupid book. and you had no money to buy it yourself, otherwise you would have by now.

"well, this person must have, like, eighty thousand dollars worth of book debt. you should track them down," you spoke tentatively, not entirely sure what words were spewing from your mouth. but, you contemplated the idea, actually thinking it was a pretty good one,"yeah, yeah you definitely have to track them down, and arrest them for unlawful possession."

mcnall was no longer willing to tolerate my inane rambling, and he promptly pointed to the door,"get out."

you frowned, deciding today was the day you were gonna find out whoever has this book. you were tired of waiting around, trying to manifest this person handing your book back into the library. you needed to take matters into your own hands.

"can you at least tell me who has the book?" you crossed your arms over your chest and sighed.

he shook his head, unwilling to negotiate on the subject,"against policy. 'fraid not. bye now."

you stared at him with narrowed eyes, knowing it was now time to bring out the big guns.

"okay," you let out an obnoxiously sad sigh, turning towards the doors,"guess i'll just...come back. everyday. until the book is finally, finally returned. i'll see you. everyday. at seven. everyday." you reiterated, knowing the more you said it, the more desperate he would get.

he stared at you in exasperation, clearly weighing his options. after a moment he caved with a deep sigh.

"fine! but you can only come here for two minutes at a time from now on." he narrowed his eyes at you.

you grinned, satisfied with the victory. though he acted like he hated you, he found your interactions to be entertaining. they made the life of a high school librarian amusing.

he typed away on his computer, clicking at things you had no idea about.

"it looks like the book was last checked out by a...guy germaine." he read off the screen.

you rolled your eyes, the answer unsurprising to you,"a fucking puckhead, of course. thanks, mr. mcnall."

he nodded,"goodbye, y/n."

you waved lightly and walked out of the library, on a mission to find this boy. you didn't know him that well, but he didn't exactly seem to be the reading type to you. and if he was...well, clearly he was a very slow reader.

you walked down the hallway, looking at a clock on the way. class didn't start for another twenty minutes. that seemed like ample time to track down guy.

though it would be difficult cause you didn't exactly know him that well. you knew his friend, averman. you two had child development together and you guys had actually become friends.

all you knew about guy is that he's extremely attractive and that he's (evidently) an incredibly sluggish reader.

you roamed the halls, hoping you'd magically find him along the way.

"let's see, if i were guy germaine...where would i be?" you muttered to yourself, biting the nail on your thumb.

you decided to check the cafeteria, seeing as that was where everyone sat in the morning. you were hoping the hockey team didn't have morning practice, because that would only make it that much harder for you to get ahold of him.

but, you tried not to think of that detrimental possibly, as you entered the cafeteria, noticing for the first time just how many bodies occupied all of the seats at eden hall academy.

you glanced around, looking for the puckhead who was holding your book hostage. you saw riley and the varsity team, not quite what you looking for.

you saw the cheerleaders, who were all staring at the varsity boys. again, not the target, but maybe you were getting closer?

you looked to the right of the head cheerleader, mindy, and saw guy and averman at a table adjacent to her's.

you smirked, muttering to yourself, something you tended to do a lot,"spotted."

you walked towards the table, energy gaining as you got closer and closer to him. you see, the closer you got to him, the closer you got to your book.

when you arrived at the table he was at, you stood in front of him, resting your hands on the table.

"oh, hey, y/n!" averman grinned at you.

"hey, averman," you smiled, glancing at guy, trying to play it cool, not wanting him to think you were crazy,"guy, right?"

you weren't crazy. you were just a girl. a girl who wanted to read.

"yeah. apparently, you're y/n." he smiled lightly at you.

"i am," you replied, coolly taking a seat in front of him,"listen, you have a book i want."

averman let out a laugh, shaking his head at the possibility,"i promise you, he doesn't."

"yeah....i don't really read, sorry," he frowned, looking at me blankly,"you've got the wrong guy."

you sighed, wondering why he had to make this so difficult.

you knit your brows, staring at him quizzically, "so you didn't check out a book from the library a couple months ago?"

he gave you a confused look, giving it a second thought. after a moment his face broke out in a realization.

"ohhhhh. yeah, i guess i did. i forgot about that," he nodded and turned his attention back to you,"so what are you? some kind of book police?"

you scoffed,"no. i've been wanting the book for months, but you've keeping it hostage."

"no way," he laughed, poking fun at me,"i specifically picked a book i knew no one would care about. i knew i would forget about it, so i just picked the lamest book of all time." he explained.

you rolled your eyes, deciding not to dignify his answer with a retort, staying right on track, "can you just return it please?"

"well, since you said please," he said sarcastically, knowing the way you said it wasn't polite in the slightest. he stood up, letting out a sigh,"come with me. you'll have your stupid book back in no time."

you were annoyed that he called the book stupid, but nonetheless went with him.

"so, what's your deal? you need the book for a project?" he asked as you two walked to...well, you suppose his locker. he didn't actually say.

"no. just really wanna read it." you shrugged holding onto the straps of your backpack.

he laughed finding your answer comical,"you mean to tell me, you wanna read the sun also rises? for fun?"

you rolled your eyes,"not all of us wanna spend our time tackling each other on the ice."

he looked over at you in amusement, as you both continued to walk,"you know i okay hockey?"

you could tell that went straight to his head. who knew he was this cocky?

you shrugged, trying not to let him stroke his own ego,"i'm friends with averman, he talks about you guys."

guy turned the corner, you followed suit, wondering how long this interaction will be.

"sounds like averman," he shrugged before changing the subject,"so, besides books what else are you into? what kind of music do you like?"

"does it matter?" you ask, wondering why he was trying to make conversation.

not that you weren't interested in guy. you were. you thought he was really cute, you just simply weren't looking for anything special right now.

"just trying to get to know my book buddy." he said in a satirical manner.

you rolled your eyes,"did you ever even open the book?"

"i did not. my english class went to the library and we had to check something out." he shrugged.

you laughed. that made way more sense to you.

"i see."

you arrived at his locker. he began turning the dial, spinning through his combination. the door clicked open and he pulled out the beauty itself.

you beamed, happy that you finally got to see what you had been looking for.

guy wiped the dust off the cover, smiling triumphantly,"here she is, in all her glory."

"great," you smiled, gesturing to the direction of the library,"you go return it and i'll take it off your hands."

he frowned, shaking his head distastefully,"no. that'll take forever. just take it. i trust you."

he jutted the book towards you, causing you to look at him quizzically, wondering if he was thinking about this rationally.

"but then you'll have more late fees." you pointed out.

you knew you wouldn't take late fees for anyone, so you immediately questioned his motives.

he smirked, eyeing your for a second,"well, then i'll only ask for your phone number return."

you laughed, thinking it was cute, knowing that he did have a sort of boyish charm.

you sighed, pretending to mull over the option, "well, you drive a hard bargain," he cut you off with a short laugh,"but i think i can agree to those terms."

you grabbed a pen from the side of your bag, writing your number on his hand.

the bell rang out, signaling that we had only six minutes to get to class.

"guess this is where part ways." he told you, drawing his hand back.

you nodded, glancing around at all the bodies feeding into the hallways,"guess so. call me later?"

he smiled confidently,"how else will i know what happens in the book?"

you chuckled, before turning on your heels and making your way to class.
