The Invitation
It had been six months since Danielle "Dani" Ardor lost her entire family. Her sister Terri killed her parents through carbon monoxide gas, and then she killed herself. It already put a massive strain on Dani's deteriorating relationship with her boyfriend Christian. Christian was more emotionally distant when all she wanted was comfort and love. It was taking quite a toll on her mental state. Dani wanted to process the grief she was feeling, and Christian wasn't helping. Recently, Dani and Christian were at a college party, and Dani found out through a friend that Christian was planning on going to Sweden for some sort of midsummer festival with his friends Mark, Josh, and Pelle. And he didn't even tell her! It was the late summer evening, and Dani went back to her dorm, Christian waiting for her. "You okay?" Christian asked casually. Dani nodded and said, "mhmm, yeah." She adjusted her hair and said, "that was just really weird..."
"What was?" Christian asked. Dani shrugged a little and replied, "the... Sweden. I had no idea." Christian looked at her and blankly asked, "well, what do you mean? Cuz I told you I wanted to go." Dani wandered over to Christian and said, "okay fine, but I didn't know you were going..." Christian slouched a little and said, "I just decided today. I wasn't keeping it from you." Dani asked softly but incredulously, "you already have a ticket?" Christian furrowed his eyebrows and said in the most half-assed manner possible, "...I'm sorry?" Dani moved closer and said, "okay, well just... imagine if you were at a party and then someone said, hey, what are you doing for summer? And then my friend said, oh we're going to China for three months and we're leaving in two weeks." Christian interrupted, "it's Sweden for a month and a half." Dani finished, "and it was the first you'd ever heard of it." Christian stood up and said, "okay. I told you I wanted to go to Sweden." Dani adjusted her hair a little and countered, "no you said it would be cool to go."
"Yeah, and then I got the opportunity and I decided I wanted to do it," reasoned Christian. "Look I don't mind you going I just wish you would've told me, that's all." said Dani, holding Christian's hand. "Well I just apologized, Dani." Christian replied coldly. "You didn't apologize." Dani replied just as coldly, "you said 'sorry,' which sounds more like too bad." Christian knew he was losing this argument, and he let go of Dani, saying, "maybe I should just go home."
"What?" Dani asked, desperation and panic in her voice. "No, no! I'm just trying to understand..." She held Christian's hand once more. "And I'm trying to apologize," said a tired Christian. "And I don't need an apology," said Dani, "I don't. I just wanted to talk about it, that's all." They let go of holding hands. "I really think I should just leave." Christian said in an emotionless voice, but right as he got several steps in, Dani held him back and desperately pleaded, "no, no, no, no, no, no, no! Please, please, please, please, I'm not, I'm not trying to attack you!"
"It really feels like you are," said Christian, knowing this would coax Dani into feeling guilty. "Well then, I'm- well then I'm sorry! I'm sorry, I just got confused! I'm sorry!" Dani said in a guilt ridden and worried manner, "I- hey, please, come on! Can you just come and sit with me, please?" She tried to get Christian over to her couch, but he refused and flatly said, "stop." Dani sat down and asked, "please, and we can talk about it? Look, it just, it just felt really weird, okay? But I'm fine. I think it's great that you're going to Sweden, I do. I think it's amazing. Are you going for your thesis?" Christian paced a little and replied, "I don't know what my thesis is..."
"I know, and it can, it can, it will... It can be inspiring, right? Right? ...right?" Dani asked. Christian wasn't even looking at her. When he looked at her, Christian reluctantly asked in an annoyed manner, "Do you... Want to go with me and my friends to the Midsummer festival?" Dani thought for a moment. Did she really want to go? So far, much as she hated admitting it, Dani felt more alone when she was around Christian. She made up her mind and said, "no thanks Christian. It sounds fun, but I think I need time for myself. Plus, this is going to be my first birthday without my family, so I may need my space." Dani secretly thought to herself, "I bet that lunkhead forgot about my birthday. Sheesh Christian, for someone so smart, you can be so dumb. Friggin' burly idiot." Christian wasn't sure whether to feel surprised or relieved that Dani didn't want to go with him. And unsurprisingly, Christian forgot Dani's birthday was coming in a few weeks. Of course, he knew Mark would be glad that Dani wasn't coming along. Christian crossed his arms and said, "alright fine. Guess I'll go with my friends." Dani nodded and said, "good."
