True Love's Paper
"Where are we going, Lachlan?" I asked curiously. No answer. "Who's house is it?" He chuckled and looked over at me as he drove. I scolded, "Keep your eyes on the road!"
"I will," he assured me, "and we're going to Zeke's house."
"What? Why Zeke?" I questioned, but I knew I couldn't change his mind. Why would we TP my boyfriend's house?
Lachlan said nothing for the rest of the drive, not even answering my question. Once we got to Zeke's house, he grabbed the pack of twelve rolls from the backseat. He ripped it open and handed me one, taking one for himself.
"You know how to do this, right, Flora?" Lachlan glanced over at me and smirked.
"I don't want to, Lach," I admitted as I frowned at my best friend. "Why do you want to do this to Zeke's? He's my boyfriend."
"Not much of one," Lachlan whispered under his breath. He didn't want me to hear, but I had heard him. Before I could speak, he launched a roll of toilet paper into one of the McCloud's beautiful, humongous trees.
"Lachlan!" I yelled at him but not loud enough that we'd disturb anyone in the house. He didn't stop; he continued to tangle paper all through the tree. He papered all three trees on the front lawn and refused to listen to me.
When I finally got his attention, Lachlan looked at me and allowed me to speak. "What did you mean when you said that?"
"You know he's a terrible guy, Flor. You just don't want to admit it. Come over here," Lachlan grabbed my hand and led me to the side of the house. "Which room is his?"
"That one," I pointed, unsure of where he was going with this.
"I just wanted to let you know that..." he began to say as he chucked a roll at the window to which I'd pointed. It thumped and bounced back to us. I watched Zeke throw up the window, annoyed.
"What are you doing here, Flora?" he asked as he raised his eyebrows. "And with him? And toilet paper?"
Lachlan looked at me, and I didn't know how to answer. I looked into his eyes, and he took a step closer to me. "Admit it, Zeke is a dick," Lachlan whispered to me. I was hesitant, but he handed me a roll. "If you agree, throw it."
I stared at him for a minute but looked at Zeke and lobbed the roll over his house, decorating it nicely with TP. Lachlan turned toward me and kissed me. When I pulled away, I gave him a shocked look. However, I leaned in once more and kissed him again. It didn't matter what I'd have to say to Zeke later. That was the night I realized what true love was. It was never what I received from Zeke. It's toilet papering the house of the person who has hurt the person you love.
