Prologue

"Hello, Midnight." A small calico cat said, a blank look on her face.

"What? Huh?" A tiny black kitten stammered. The kitten looked around, confused. "Where am I?!" The small she-cat asked. "This isn't the forest I usually hunt mice in!" She turned a round to see a she-cat staring at her.

The small calico looked into Midnight's bright yellow eyes and said, "Greetings."

With eyes wide, Midnight answered the calico in a shy, squeaky voice, "H-hello." She said looking away shyly.

The small she-cat realized that Midnight was scared and tried to soothe her by licking her small ear and whispering in a calm and soothing tone. "Don't be scared" she said. "We are not here to hurt you. We are here to help you."

"We?" Midnight asked as confusion swept over her. "Who else is here?"

"We are here." Said many voices from behind Midnight. "We are here to help you." A bigger cat -a tom- said as Midnight spun around to look at the 4 other cats.

Another cat -obviously an elder- stepped from the group of cats. It was a she-cat, many moons older than her. Her flank was marked with many scars. But what she could see (which was not much) seemed to be a silvery blue color. "Hello." The scarred cat said. "My name is Silversky."

"S-S-Silversky?" The words tumbled around in Midnight's mouth.

"Yes." The first tom replied, stepping forward, brushing Silversky's flank with his pelt. He stopped, intertwining his tail with Silversky's. "And my name is Flametail." He meowed, waiting a heartbeat before continuing. "I used to be the deputy of Shadowclan, before...."

"Before what!?" Midnight blurted out, obviously wanting to know more. "What happened!?"

The forest stood still for a few heartbeats. Flametail was working hard to find a way to tell of his death. He had to make sure he wasn't going to say something too brutal, to where the kit couldn't stop thinking about it, making it hard for her to sleep at night. Flametail broke the stillness among the six cats. "I died fighting for my clan in war." He said, pausing, his pale yellow eyes focused on the ground, locked in place. "I died saving my apprentice from Oaksplash, a very strong warrior. If I hadn't jumped in between Ashpaw and Oaksplash, my apprentice would have come here long before me."

Midnight stood where she was. She turned around to see the calico, remembering that she didn't know where she was. "Where am I?" She asked the small cat politely, trying to flatten her dark fur so that no cats would see how frightened she was.

"Can I tell her, Patchtail?" A cat from behind Midnight asked. Swerving around to see what cat that had asked the question, Midnight saw a muscular grey tom appear out of the shadow of a great oak tree. The tom's yellow eyes focused on the little kit, waiting for the calico to answer. For the first time, Midnight had realized something in common about all the cats around her, she just couldn't figure out what exactly what it was. It was something about their pelts that made them all look the same.

"Ok, Pebblestep," Patchtail said. "You can tell her" she paused for a heartbeat, "but let Sunsplash tell the prophesy."

"Great," Pebblestep said turning his gaze to Midnight. "This forest," he paused for effect, " is called Starclan. And we live here, along with many other deceased cats."

Surprised, Midnight stood, her paws planted firmly on the ground. She wanted to run. To not believe that this was real. To wake up in the small box that she fell asleep in. To see her sister's bright green eyes staring soulfully back into her own, giving her the power to fall back into her slumber. But she knew that she could not run. Her paws felt like stones, weighing her down. Even if she could run, she knew that the cats surrounding her would easily catch up to her. She was only a little kit. And they were big, strong cats. Knowing that she had no chance, Midnight gave in to the sleepiness. Her legs gave out and she flopped to the ground, curling up into the most comfortable position she could. The last thing she remembered was a soft, quiet voice whispering in her ear.

Remember, It said, When the Sun falls, and Twilight has passed, Midnight will rule the clouds.....
