chapter fourteen
I WASN'T EXPECTING TO MEET Spencer's friends and colleagues in this circumstance. Only Penelope was present at the time, but she had already got in touch with the other members of the team before I could tell her what had happened.
"Ally, honey," Penelope said, "please tell me what you know, and when the others arrive, we'll just say the important things." I felt very at ease in her company.
"This isn't how I wanted to meet you, but Ally, we need to focus on the awesome guy," she even has a nickname for him, I knew their friendship was beautiful but hadn't realized it until now.
"Derek drove him to my apartment around 8 a.m., and we spent a few hours together before he left for his house. He has an odd habit of not leaving any of his clothes here, even if he plans to sleep over, which is why he was leaving." I'm clearly upset, and I can't hide it.
"I used that time to relax; my phone was on silent and slipped between the blankets; I saw three messages from him, the last of which instructed me to call you," I sigh deeply; this is a terrible situation in which I have no idea what will happen.
"You previously hacked his phone; can you find his current location in the same way? Penelope, you're a computer genius "I say this quickly because my brain tells me that anxiety will soon overcome me. Penelope is attempting to use a computer program that appears to be quite complex.
"I think this will take a minute, his phone is off but I can still see the last location," she tries to tell me without taking her gaze away from the screen that is loading the requested result. "I've got something!" Just a few seconds later, she exclaimed.
The image on the screen appeared to be an internet map where you could search for locations; this appeared to be very reliable.
"I'm guessing he sent the last message here because the times are only 3 minutes apart. Your message was sent first, and then his phone suddenly died"She zoomed in on the map, but that didn't reveal anything.
"Sorry, this isn't my job, but time is ticking until everyone gets together. Do you have any knowledge of anyone who would want to harm you or Spencer? "These words echoed inside my head, as if I were attempting to analyze everyone I met. I've noticed in the last few weeks. They were not on the wrong side of the law.
My thoughts are still in the past, so I shake my head negatively. "Try to remain calm and think clearly. It could be anyone; remember that people like this are mentally ill, and they don't need much of an excuse to do something like this."
That's what I was worried about. The perpetrator could have been anyone, and anyone could have knocked him out and kidnapped him. That is the most serious issue.
"The team has arrived, I hope you're prepared for this shock," she shakes my hand as a man in a black suit walks into her office. His expression is neutral and it seems cold.
"My name is Aaron Hotchner, and I'd like you to join us in the conference room," he said as he extended his hand to Penelope. "We won't treat you as a suspect or a witness, but it will be formal, Ally, what's your last name?" he asked, and I replied quickly and clearly.
Garcia remained in her office, while Aaron and I went to the other room. Anxiety was building in me because there were so many unknown people all at once. Spencer is in danger, so Ally pay close attention.
"My man won the lottery, I didn't believe him that he found such a good girl, where are you..." I already know this is Derek, we've never met, but I've heard similar comments during Spencer's conversation. I completely understand why their boss is annoyed that they are wasting his time in this circumstance.
"Garcia delivered me the paper with the last messages on it, as well as the location where his phone last picked up a signal. Spencer was near your building before anything happened to him, according to this information "This makes me feel more awful since he was so close to returning to me.
"Which would imply the kidnapper knows that district if he's so free to do it in such a densely populated area," the older man pointed out. "Perhaps he's been watching this neighborhood or is just familiar enough with it to know how to avoid the cameras," he concluded.
"Is there a chance the kidnapper is from the building?" I asked nervously, and everyone looked at me in surprise. "Do you suspect someone or are you just making up a profile in your head?" asked the blonde, whose name I recognize as JJ. Even though it appears harsh now, I know she doesn't mean it.
"We're not going to cause any trouble, Ally; can you think of anyone?" Derek inquired, to which I shrugged. "I don't know the people in my building; I believe the majority of them are retired people because they always complain about the noise," my response is insignificant.
"So we're still at square one. We don't know if Spencer is drugged or in an unconsciousness, but he won't give up without a fight "According to Hotch. There is a lot of tension in the air; this is a terrible situation.
"Perhaps it's a woman, Spencer is a gentleman and wouldn't lay a hand on a woman for no reason, he didn't know she was dangerous," JJ quickly states her theory, and she was correct. "A female cannot pick him up and drag him somewhere unless he has an associate or is on steroids," Rossi says.
"Unsub probably had a car ready to go," I speculated. Anything is possible in such cases; in theory, such kidnappings are planned.
For a while, there was an awkward silence as we all tried to come to some sort of conclusion. It was extremely difficult, and I blamed myself even though I couldn't do anything.
Garcia was panting and barely able to speak on the other side of the door.
"Hotch, I have something I'd like you to see," we all flinched, but it was only Hotch who stood up nonchalantly and without hope. I was jealous of their ability to suppress all emotions and work normally on the case, despite the fact that it involved someone they knew very well.
While we awaited word from Penelope and Aaron, the rest of the team tried to make me feel at ease. "We're profilers, we can tell when someone is uncomfortable, and you mamasita are having a mild panic attack," Derek said as he sat in front of me and tried to talk to me slowly.
"I know it means a lot to you, but you can't let your nervousness consume you. Spencer is an expert at what he does; he understands how to manipulate people in order to buy himself more time. And JJ didn't mean anything hurtful; we just care about him too much because something bad always happens to him "I look at JJ, who has a slight smile on her face.
"The little bird on the branch told us you graduated from our academy; how about you do your best and solve the first case with us?" Rossi proudly asked. Spencer must have told him that I had written a study of his book for the final paper.
"What's the matter, Hotch?" I asked him, almost scared. He didn't say anything until we entered the room where Penelope was, who was wearing a sour smile. The news was not encouraging.
"I'd like to digress and say how much I adore you, especially since you're Spencer's girlfriend, but I had to conduct some routine research..." She spoke too quickly, as if she needed to get it out of her system.
"Ally West is your mother's last name; it's not strange that you don't have your father's last name; it's just that your father's past is very dangerous and strange," my face puzzled.
"I never spoke with him; you must tell me what you know," I admit to them. It's better to start now than later.
"Your father has been imprisoned since June 1993, only eight and a half months after you were born. He is accused of murder, is serving a life sentence, and is facing the death penalty "My jaw is currently on the floor. It's no surprise he never wrote to me or was mentioned.
"Garcia obtained additional information on him and charged him with illegal possession of a weapon, drug trafficking, and heroin use. This was prior to his being charged with two murders." Hotchner went on to say that Garcia could no longer talk about such things without getting emotional.
"It's also been claimed he framed a woman named Anna Mikaels. She's also in prison on the other side of the country; if we look a little deeper, we'll find a link..." He cleared his throat and paused for a moment to ensure that everything was in order. This is far too much; it is not possible.
"That connection is their daughter Jane Olivers, who is a year older than you," which means dad had an affair with Anna, with whom he also had a child. But he also forced me and decided that this was too much for him.
"Ally, would you like some water to drink? I know this is difficult to hear, but this appears to be the hidden truth about your father "Penelope hands me a glass of water, and I nod.
"Is... is there a picture of her for me to see?" my subconscious tells me, though I'm not sure why.
Hotchner shows me my half-criminal sister's record, which shows that she has been punished numerous times for minor offenses. Underage alcohol consumption and use of psychoactive substances. It was all written before I saw her image, which made the blood in my veins freeze.
I was looking at her picture silently while my mind was racing with ideas. I wanted to say something at the same time, but I was too taken aback by this information. Why am I so bad at suppressing my emotions? This isn't about me right now, and I get to a much more important person as soon as possible.
"She..." I let out a deep sigh as I felt my lungs fill with oxygen. Air was almost painful. "She went to Spencer's classes," she was the same girl who almost made my paper submission late.
"Oh my God, she's been with us the entire time," I cover my mouth with my hand as I realize she was the jealous girl, and she was most likely the one who did it.
We dashed back into the meeting room to find the rest of the team. We took turns discussing the truth I discovered and how it could be a possible clue about Spencer and the person who did it. Everyone was shocked because they thought it was done by someone else and that it was a man, not a woman.
"I don't get it, if she's an unsub, how did she know which route Spencer was taking?" Derek enquired, his eyes wide. This was a disaster. I was still reeling from the stinging reality.
"I think I found the answer, my dark chocolate," Garcia said, projecting a document containing her personal information. For example, driver's license number, ID number, and address.
"You have to be kidding me!" When I saw the same residential address as mine, I cursed furiously. "She's in the apartment across the hall," everyone says, grabbing their phones in the hopes of dispatching agents to check on Spencer.
"It would be risky to bring him here; someone would see her because my building lacks an elevator," I cut them off, desperately hoping he would be there.
"She was distant in class, almost unsure of herself and her surroundings. But when it came to finals, she left the office looking narcissistic. It was almost as if she was deliberately sloppy to give the impression that she and Spencer had done something."
Everyone pays close attention as I recount what I recall. It wasn't long ago, but I still believe that some details are out of my hands.
"That would explain why she kidnapped him and not you; she wanted to take something from you because you had previously taken something or someone from her," JJ said in response to my story.
"Like your father," Aaron concluded after reviewing their criminal records. "She was little when he was still with your mother in a happy family; who knows what her mother said to her to make her want revenge," Derek continued while he spoke to me personally.
"She was too young to understand what her father did, with her being placed in foster care, having no one of her own by her side, and probably spending her life thinking he was there for you," Rossi says in the story, interrupting Derek. "I believe she was aware of her parents' existence; children are inquisitive and will discover anything. I believe Jane wanted to give Ally her full attention, but Ally was uninterested in her friendship ", if I've never had contact with her before, I try to remember through hazy memories.
"Is there any chance of finding the video surveillance from an Italian restaurant and locating her face through some program, Penelope?" I questioned rapidly. The only person I've recently rejected or ignored was the uncultured waitress from the restaurant.
"You're underestimating me, of course I can, and I'm just entering the surveillance cameras, beautiful doll, I need a date," she says confidently as I tell her the exact date of our date.
"About 8:30 p.m.," I add to speed up the search. "We have a match, though it appears she was wearing a wig because she is normally blonde, as you saw."
Screw it. This is extremely sick.
