Chapter Seven

'I'm hungry, I think I might go get some breakfast and then catch up with Fidelia and Kermit.' I told Avery.

'She's probably going to be worried about you.' He stated.

'I know.' I said raking my hands through my hair. 'What should I say?' I was asking for his permission to tell him about last night. Fidelia is my best friend and I wanted to tell her, but I wasn't sure if it was the right thing to do.

'Oh, umm... Tell her you started burning up and I took you to the Mentors and they put you in Med Room overnight. She can't ask them, and even if she does they can't tell her.' Avery said, sort of like he had been thinking about it too.

'Okay.' I agreed. I was about to walk out the door when Avery stopped me.

'You can't wear that.' He said, looking down at his nightshirt.

'Oh, um... Yes of course.' I stuttered. He smiled and handed my fireproof training shirt that had been hanging over the arm of the couch. He disappeared into the bathroom and I took it as a cue to get changed. I pulled his nightshirt over my head, and quickly replaced it with my shirt. I tried to ignore the bruising.

I wasn't sure whether to wait for Avery or leave, just as I was thinking that I heard Avery call out from the bathroom.

'Magdalene, are you still here?'

'Um, yeah.' I replied.

'Okay, well I have a few things to do before breakfast, so you should go and I'll catch up with you at training.' He said as he walked out of the bathroom, patting his wet cheeks with a face towel.

'Okay, I'll see you later then.' I said, and slipped off the couch.

I only had one class which was Science and then I had training, same time as Avery. I thanked Avery again before leaving and headed towards my room. I knew that Fidelia would still be in bed because breakfast finished at eleven on Sundays.

When I arrived at my room, I was surprised to see Kermit sitting on Fidelia's bed and Fidelia pacing back and forth in front of him. Her brows furrowed in worry. As soon as Fidelia saw me, she threw herself at me with a squeal. She looked me up and down before scolding me.

'Magdalene, where on earth have you been? I've been so worried! I thought something had happened to you!' She shouted. Kermit looked at me apologetically. He had obviously tried to calm her down.

'My alms started, um... not working right and I was burning up. Avery found me and took me to the Med Room where I stayed the night again.' I lied. It wasn't quite what Avery and I had decided on, but it would have to do.

'You seem to be making a habit of staying in Med Room.' Fidelia hugged me again. After she released me, I walked over to Kermit and pulled him into a tight hug.

'I'm glad you're okay, sorry that I haven't had time to talk to you. Mentor Christian was tough on you I heard.' I said to him. He ran his long fingers through his fiery hair before answering.

'Yes, they are tightening down on us supposedly. To get us ready for our missions. It wasn't too bad, I only needed a few stitches.' Kermit shrugged as I gasped.

'Kermit...' I started.

'Magdalene, I'm fine now okay. Please don't worry.' He looked at me pleadingly and I did. Fidelia probably gave him a huge lecture and would have fussed over him for hours.

'Alright, let me get changed and we can go to breakfast.' I smiled, and Kermit obliged, quickly leaving the room. Fidelia rummaged through my drawers to find a pair of class clothes.

'These are the ones that the scientists dropped off yesterday.' She smiled, and handed them to me.

'Fireproof,' I observed as my fingers brushed over the leathery clothes. I pulled off my training shirt and Fidelia screamed.

**

I had forgotten about my bruises. I looked down at them, and they were even worse than they were at Avery's. They were red and purple and covered my whole stomach. I gently traced a particularly menacing bruise with my fingers and winced. They hurt more than it did at Avery's.

'Magdalene... what, what is, what the hell!' Fidelia choked.

I quickly pulled the class shirt over my head. It was white and long sleeved, it also hugged my body like my training kit did.

'It's-' I started.

'Don't you dare say "it's nothing" Magdalene, what the hell happened?' She sat down on the bed and put her head in her hands as I silently continued to change.

'Please tell me it wasn't Mentor Christian or something?' She asked.

'No, no, no. It was just my alm, I haven't full figured out to control it yet.' I answer.

'No kidding.' She sighed. 'It's going to kill you I swear.' She added.

'That's what the scientists said too.' I laughed. I had to laugh, it didn't seem like there was much else I could have done.

'Does it hurt?' She asked.

'No.' I lied.

'Bullshit.' Fidelia grinned. 'Don't try act tough on my account. I remember you bawling your eyes out when you got pins and needles in your foot when you first arrived.' She chirped.

I threw my pillow at her and she squealed. 'Shut up.' I said.

Kermit knocked on the door.

'Is everything okay in there? I'm hungry can we go?' He asked.

I laughed and so did Fidelia.

'We'll be out in a second fatty.' Fidelia replied, as she grabbed her English book.

The walk to the dining room was filled with Fidelia and Kermit's bickering. I told them twice to stop fighting but they would either ignore me or try and bring me into it so I stopped trying.

Breakfast was porridge, as always and toast, as always. I helped myself to a bowl of porridge and swirled a thick spoonful of honey on top. It was about eight in the morning so the dining room was deserted. Everyone else stayed in bed until at least ten.

I sat down and started to eat. Fidelia joined me and Kermit, after finally deciding what he wanted on his toast sat down too.

'Did you hear that we have a new scientist?' Kermit asked.

'No way!' I exclaimed. That was the first I'd heard of it.

'Yeah I heard that too!' Fidelia added.

'Her name's Linda or something.' Kermit said, and I gasped.

'Her name?' I said incredulously.

'Yes, her name.' Kermit grinned.

'Yeah, supposedly she told Ria at testing last night.' Fidelia said.

'No way!' I gasped again.

'Yes way.' Fidelia and Kermit said in unison. I laughed.

'I have to wait till Friday to meet this mysterious Linda' I grumbled.

'Ha, I have testing on Tuesday!' Kermit grinned.

'And me on Thursday!' Fidelia laughed.

'We won't tell you any details. We'll leave you hanging for Friday.' Kermit teased.

'You guys are the worst.' I told them jokingly.

We ate the rest of our breakfast with minimal conversation. Mostly about how much our classes sucked. I was still thinking about the new scientist though, surely Ria was lying. A scientist would never say their name, new or not.

We cleared our plates and headed back to our room. Kermit decided that he would come too, because we were all in the same English class and hated the new book we had to read. It was so boring that I couldn't even remember the name. I suspected that secretly Fidelia was enjoying it because she had brought her book to breakfast. I made sure to tease her about it later.

I sat cross-legged on my bed flipping through the stupid book's pages. Fidelia flicked through her pages with actual interest. I couldn't even remember what the assignment was on. Kermit started snoring and I fell off the bed laughing. I lay on the floor and stared up at the pristine white ceiling.

'Fidelia?' I asked.

'Mmm?' She replied, obviously she was transfixed with that boring book.

'Why are we here?' I asked and she groaned loudly as she rolled onto her stomach to look at me on the floor.

'Not this again honestly.' She dismissed me.

'Kermit's asleep.' I added.

'Kermit!' Fidelia yelled. I looked up just in time to see Kermit snort and leap up into the air, landing in a cat like position.

I started laughing again.

'Shit Fidelia!' He laughed, settling down again.

'You were asleep.' She said pointedly.

'No, I was resting my eyelids. There's a difference!' Kermit protested. I giggled as Fidelia rolled her eyes.

'This is an important part of English! It counts for half our grade!' Fidelia glared at Kermit.

'Who died and made you Shakespeare?' Kermit retaliated.

'Shakespeare?!' I howled with laughter and eventually Fidelia started laughing too until we all had tears running down our cheeks.
