Chapter Nine

When I woke up, it we had been flying for a few hours. Kermit had found another magazine and Fidelia was dozing quietly next to me.

‘She’s finally calmed down enough to sleep, thank god.’ I smiled at Kermit, who shook his head smiling.

‘No, she just passed out about ten minutes ago.’ He tried to keep himself from laughing but ended up snorting loudly.

‘Oh my gosh, you’re kidding?’ I said incredulously.

‘Nope, I wouldn’t lie to you.’

‘Yeah you would.’ I said pointedly and Kermit laughed, throwing his head back.

‘Just read your stupid magazine.’ I grumbled, before turning to Fidelia.

I shook her shoulder gently and she didn’t wake up.

‘It’s no use. Mentor Peter gave her an injection after she started screaming and passed out. It’ll keep her calm.’ Kermit said, not looking up from his magazine.

‘Oh..’ I muttered and sunk back down into my seat. Kermit held out a magazine to me and I reluctantly took it. It was pink and had COSMOPOLITAN in big, bold, yellow letters at the top. A woman with tanned skin and blonde hair smiled on the front page. It was so foreign to me, all of it. There were small sentences in different colours surrounding the woman. Learn Jen’s secret to visibly less aging. What’s hot and what’s not: Your guide to summer fashion. I scoffed but continued to take in the bright colours.

I turned the first page and it was an advertisement for some lip crayon. It talked about making your lips more ‘voluptuous’ and it was the most ridiculous thing I had ever seen. Since when did colouring your lips in make you look good? The next page was some ‘editors foreword’ which babbled on about her holiday to Hawaii and how she felt tan, ageless and ready to combat the world.

The hot or not page was filled with famous people in bikinis. It named and shamed. There was a skinny girl with her ribs showing and her collarbones sticking out. She had a massive gap in between her thighs and she looked pale and sick. If she was famous, wouldn’t she be rich enough to eat well? There was a big HOT stamped across her picture and I had to double take and re-read it to make sure I hadn’t got it wrong. What was up with these people? I didn’t understand and I had to skip the next few pages so my faith in humanity wasn’t completely diminished.

I ended up reading an article about some celebrity break up and I wondered what I would be like if I wasn’t so... if I was normal. Would I have had a boyfriend?

Once again my mind went on a fun reminiscing trip to the last day with my mother and I ended up swallowing down bile and shaking the thoughts out of my head. I realised I hadn’t eaten any of my plane pack, but I wasn’t very hungry.

I grabbed my red pack and my normal rucksack. From that I took out my gloves and jacket and shoved them in the red pack along with the plane food. I left my rucksack behind under the seat. I presumed we’d be flying back in the same plane and I could grab it then. I did the same to Fidelia’s food and rucksack. She had packed a lot more unnecessary items including that stupid English book. I packed for her what I had packed for myself, gloves and jacket. I placed her rucksack next to mine under the seat and once again had nothing to occupy me until I noticed the white blonde of Wyatt’s hair in the seat in front of me. We had been able to take off our seatbelts a while after takeoff so I leant forward and tugged on a lock of Wyatt’s hair. I felt him flinch underneath me and he turned in his seat to face me. I looked at him expectantly, waiting for either retaliation or a rebuttal but I didn’t receive either.

‘Hey,’ I whispered. I didn’t know why I whispered, I just did.

‘Hey, how’s the flight?’ Wyatt whispered back, obviously following my trend.

‘Good, Fidelia passed out.’ I smiled.

‘We know, she was screaming her head off when the plane went through some wind and then she passed out. It’s amazing you slept right through it!’ Wyatt went back to normal volume.

‘I was tired.’ I admitted.

Wyatt looked at Kermit who was now softly snoring, and Fidelia who was twitching in her sleep. ‘Seeing that you have such great company, I’ll leave you.’ He said with a devilish grin and started to turn around.

‘Wyatt…’ I hissed, not wanting to be left to my own devices.

‘I’m just kidding, come sit next to me. Mora went to sit with Karoline so I’m a lone wolf.’ He patted the seat next to him and I carefully crawled over the top of my seat before sliding down onto another.

‘I can’t believe that are actually leaving the base!’ I said excitedly to Wyatt as I made myself comfortable.

‘I can.’ Wyatt smiled. He so could not believe it, it had been written all over his face.

‘Do you smell that?’ I asked with a smirk.

‘Smell what?’ Wyatt replied with a confused look on his face.

‘Bullshit, it’s definitely bullshit.’ I laughed at him.

‘Mags!’ Wyatt shouted before playfully swatting my shoulder.

‘Now to a more serious matter, has anyone actually thought about the plan of attack?’ I asked more seriously.

‘I think we are all leaving it up to Avery.’ Wyatt replied, settling down into the chair.

‘We always leave everything up to Avery.’ I stated. It was true, we did always leave everything up to either Avery, Nestor or Charline. They were the oldest, the smartest and the strongest.

‘The other team has mastermind Nestor though, he’s as good at making plans as Mentor Trudy is at talking about stuff we don’t want to know about.’ Wyatt remarked.

‘So… he’s good?’ I asked, even though I knew. Nestor could somehow see a pattern in everything and therefore was amazing at planning escape routes, attack strategies and defence plans.

‘No he’s shit.’ Wyatt laughed. ‘Kidding, they have Nestor and Charline. Dude we are stuffed.’ He added.

‘Oh.’ I said.

‘I hope we don’t lose too badly. My ego couldn’t take that type of blow.’ Wyatt groaned.

‘You’re such a narcissist.’ I said and thumped him on the shoulder.

‘I thought sleep prevented hormonal mood swings?’ Wyatt mumbled, rubbing his shoulder.

‘I thought getting smacked would prevent you from being a dick.’ I thumped him again, but I couldn’t keep a straight face. I howled with laughter as Wyatt scowled at me. I was just about to say something else when the loud speaker rang out overhead.

‘We are preparing to land. Please buckle your seat belts and stay in your seats.’

I clicked my seatbelt into place and leant over Wyatt to look out the window. The scenery took my breath away. It was large forest covered in tall trees that I recognised to be pines. There were a lot of other trees too, but it was still so different to the bland snowy landscape that I was used to.

‘Oh my…’ I started.

‘… God.’ Wyatt finished, I grinned at him and continued looking out the small window.

We landed with a jolt and my ears popped. As the plane slowed to a stop, I finally let excitement take over my better judgement.

I squealed loudly and Wyatt covered his ear.

‘What are you trying to do, deafen me?’ Wyatt groaned, pushing me away.

‘Get your packs, and follow me out. Kermit, carry Fidelia.’ Mentor Peter commanded.

‘I’ll take yours and Fidelia’s packs.’ I told Kermit as I reached over Wyatt's seat to pluck the red packs off my seat.

‘Let’s roll.’ Kermit said, as he delicately lifted Fidelia’s unconscious body. We followed Kermit and everyone else off the plane. I stepped outside and shielded my eyes from the bright sun. It was cold, but not too cold because of the sun. The trees seemed to never end, and surrounded us from all sides. I stepped closer to Wyatt, feeling a little anxious about being in that huge forest.

I saw Mentor Peter chatting into a walkie talkie.

‘- yes, thirty minutes, yes okay.’ I heard him say. He clapped his hands together to get our attention. ‘You have thirty minutes to devise a plan. You will then have a further fifteen minutes to hide your flag. A buzzing will sound on your vests and that is the signal to start. If you start before the buzzer, you will be disqualified and will wait on the plane until your team members’ return. Understood?’ Mentor Peter explained gruffly. ‘Oh, and Kermit. Fidelia will wake up in about ten minutes, leave her lying on the ground, she’ll be fine.’

I watched as Kermit shifted on the spot, obviously uncomfortable with leaving Fiddy on the ground. I  put all three of our packs on the ground as a makeshift pillow and Kermit less reluctantly placed Fidelia on the ground.

We all gathered around in a circle… minus Fidelia. Avery started drawing the dusty ground with a stick.

‘Okay everyone, this is the plan. I’m only going to say it once so listen.’ Avery declared.
