Chapter Eleven

I stared at Tammy. What did she mean that her telepathy wasn't working? Why did she neglect to tell us this before? How were we going to find out if Fidelia was okay?

'Wait... What?' I stammered.

'My telepathy isn't working, no one's is I don't think. It's some sort of obstacle that the Mentors made up.' Tammy crossed her arms.

I rolled my eyes and tried to think of what to do. It was completely dark, making it difficult to contact both groups, and less likely for the blue team to come wandering.

I was the only form of light, and my glowing body cast shadows on the faces of Tammy and Pansy. Pansy was still staring at me like I was god. I decided that I would have to go and find Avery, or Fidelia, whoever I came across first.

'I'm going to go and find Avery, or Fidelia. You guys will be fine here, right?'

Tammy and Pansy nodded, but I felt bad about leaving them in the dark. It was also starting to get really cold.

'Should we make a fire?' I asked. The two girls didn't say anything, but with telekinesis, they pulled small sticks and dry leaves into a pile at my feet. I took that as a yes.

'You better work this time you stupid alm.' I muttered to myself.

I crouched down next to the fire and held my hands out in front of me, directly over the fire. My hands started to glow even fiercer. Pansy looked over in awe. I wanted to do something to prove that I was actually not entirely useless. I focussed all of my energy into my hands, aiming towards the small stack of twigs. I was starting to tire; the use of my alms was making me exhausted. Suddenly, when I didn't think I could try any longer, there was a puff of flames and small round ball of fire floated from my finger tips. It cast more light than my glowing body, but not enough to be spotted easily by the blue team. The ball hovered in my palm, and I wondered what would happen if I just... let it go. The ball stayed floating in the same place that it had been before. It radiated warmth, and was just as effective as a fire.

'That's... so cool.' Tammy breathed, clearly mesmerised by my new creation.

'It's like a flare.' Pansy smiled, reaching out to touch it. I panicked and pushed her hand out of the way.

'Don't touch it!' I shouted.

'Shh, woah Mags, chill.' Tammy placed her hand on my shoulder.

'If you can touch it, why can't we?' Pansy said stubbornly.

'I am fire resistant. It doesn't affect me. You however, are a completely different story.' I flicked Pansy's nose and she giggled. 'So promise that if I leave it here, you won't touch it.' I demanded, suddenly serious.

'I prom-' the rest was muffled as she wiggled her chin under the fleece collar of her jacket.

'Sorry, what?' I teased.

'I promise.' She said louder, but it was still slightly muffled.

I left the fireball hovering in between the two girls. I said a quick goodbye and started off at a brisk jog. I had memorised the route that Avery had taken us but it was harder to make out in the dark. I managed, just and followed it back to the car. I was tired after my floating fire stunt and had to slow down to a fast walk, making my trip to the clearing a lot longer than before.

I heard murmurs coming from my right, and slowed down, silencing my heavy footsteps. I moved from tree to tree, making sure that it was definitely my team before barging in glowing and all. The walk had lessened my bodily glow and it was so dull that you would have to be pretty close to see it. I heard Karoline's voice ring out louder than the others, and knew that it was the right team.

'- if we don't have telepathy, then how are we going to communicate with them? It's not like someone will come and find us!' She was clearly angry, and I chose that moment to walk over to them. My anticipation had made me glow a little fiercer and I was spotted almost immediately.

'Magdalene?' It was Kermit.

'Shit.' That was Karoline.

'She's glowing.' Also Karoline.

'Hey guys.' I waved and entered the small circle that they had made around the car. Avery was sitting on the roof, furiously scribbling something onto a small notepad. Trust Avery to bring a notepad. He looked up and a look of shock registered on his face before he quickly recovered.

'What's going on?' I asked the clearly distressed group.

'Telepathy isn't working and now we don't know if the seekers have the flags, and we didn't know if you guys were okay because we heard screaming but we didn't want to go looking in case someone came and it just been a total catastrophe.' Mora gushed.

'Yeah, we gathered that so I came here. The screaming was when Red Teams seekers came, but we managed to fight them off.' I explained.

'You mean Tammy and Pansy fought them off.' Karoline said pointedly. Well seemed like bitch Karoline had come back from vacation.

I tried to conjure up a witty reply but Avery cut me off.

'Do you know if the seekers are okay?' He asked me, his green eyes bore into mine and I felt weak.

'I don't, I'm not sure. Fidelia screamed but, we, I'm not sure.' I sighed and looked down. I felt so weak, and it wasn't just Avery's green eyes.

'Mags are you okay? You don't look too flash.' Kermit asked worriedly. I wasn't sure if I was, so I didn't give him a direct answer.

'I just need to sit down, give me a minute.' I whispered and slid to the ground. I covered my eyes with my hands, it was dark, I knew that, but it was just so bright. I took some deep breaths and tried to stay alert.

'Have you had any food or water?' Kermit's hands pried my fingers from over my eyes and I wondered if I had eaten since breakfast. The answer was no so I shook my head.

'I need some water.' Kermit's voice was growing frantic. I placed my fingers over his lips. He was so loud.

I just. Needed. Quiet.

**

Cold water dribbled down my back and dripped from my soaking hair. I bolted upright and leapt into a crouched position. It was still dark. I scanned the faces and relaxed, it was still my team. Karoline was laughing and thumping her fist on the bonnet of the car.

'You should've, oh my, you should have seen your face!' She spluttered.

'Shut up Karoline, use your brain. We need to be quiet.' Avery snapped. I sunk back onto the ground, relieved that I hadn't been captured by the blue team or anything.

Kermit trotted over to me with a bottle of water and a small brown package.

'Drink this, and eat this. It's amazing.' He dropped the two objects onto my lap and knelt down beside me. I flicked open the water bottle and greedily gulped it down. I hadn't realised how thirsty I had been. I wondered if Tammy and Pansy had eaten. Tammy and Pansy. Shit.

'Where's Tammy and Pansy, how long did I pass out for?' I shot up and nearly knocked poor Kermit over in the process.

'It's okay, only for about ten minutes. Just eat your food and then you can go back to them.' Kermit replied. I nodded and picked up the brown package that had fallen from my lap. It was a like a bar of some description and the label read SNICKERS in big blocked, blue letters.

'What is this?' I asked, dangling in front of Kermit's face.

'It's from the plane package; I swear it's the most amazing thing I've ever eaten.' He smiled at me, and I hungrily ripped open the packet.

It was a chocolate coated bar. We had chocolate at the base, and it was given to us sometimes. It was pretty good, so I took a tentative bite. The inside was gooey and nutty and amazing. The chocolate coating melted on my tongue and I sucked the sweet gooey caramel? off the peanuts.

'Oh my gosh, this is so good!' I grinned with my mouth full. Kermit covered his eyes and laughed.

'Ew close your mouth Mags!' He groaned.

'Okay you two, we actually need to discuss what is going to happen now.' Karoline barked grumpily. Avert shot her a look I couldn't decipher and she shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes. I brushed my pants off and stood up. It was still so dark out, around midnight maybe. I had completely stopped glowing and I felt a lot better. Kermit walked closely next to me, as if he could feel the uneasiness radiating off me.

'Okay, Magdalene, we need you to find seekers.' Avery started.

'What seriously? Her?' Karoline whined.

'Yes Karoline, her.' Avery said impatiently.

'But why?' Karoline and I said in unison.

'Because you can send flares or messages out, and we will be able to see them. If they are in trouble, send out one short flame, and if it's going good, don't send any. If you have the flag, send two short bursts, okay?' Avery explained. I nodded in agreement, but I wondered if I could actually do it.

'I'll try.' I said, and I would. I would try with my whole heart and soul. We had to win.

'Okay, go and tell Tammy and Pansy, and then you have to find the seekers.' Avery took me aside. Everyone else was gathered around the car in a heated discussion. One could only guess what it was about. Avery handed me my pack, and I slung it over my shoulder.

'I don't know if I can do this, Avery.' I whispered.

'Hey, no don't say that. You can, don't listen to Karoline, she's a sour bitch that thinks she's top shit because she can fight well.' Avery looked at me and gave me a reassuring grin.

I was so confused. Avery was being, well warm. I mean, he had been amazing in the past, saving my arse multiple times. But he had generally been cut off and cold, especially at times like this.

'You'll be fine. I'll see you soon.' He pulled the beanie that kept my wild hair at bay down a little more.

'Bye,' I broke into a brisk jog and didn't look back. If I was going to do this, I had to think entirely like the warrior I had been trained to be.

**

I spotted the fireball before I saw Tammy or Pansy. It had a soft, warm glow and looked so welcoming. Luckily, it wasn't too noticeable, I just hoped that they were okay. As soon as I walked into the light, Tammy had pounced on me. Her knees dug into my chest and I struggled to breathe. She had taken me completely by surprise. I held my hands up defensively.

'It's... Just... Me.' I managed to choke out.

Tammy rolled off me and stood up.

'Finally, we thought you'd been caught.' Tammy said grumpily.

'Have you guys eaten?' I asked immediately. I heard Pansy's stomach rumble and she smiled slightly.

'No, we haven't really had much time.' She admitted.

'Okay, well I have to go and find the seekers, Avery told me that all telepathy is down and I have to go and help the seekers.' I told the two girls.

'Wait, wait. So you're telling me that Avery made you another seeker? I don't believe it!' Tammy said holding her hand up.

'Well when you say it like that...' I started.

'Well what are you waiting for? Go!' Pansy almost shouted, before giving me a playful shove. Tammy had her back against the tree and her arms crossed. It seemed to be a signature stance. Was the famous Tammy... Jealous? I laughed internally.

'Be careful, I'll be back before dawn.' I said turning away. 'Hopefully,' added under my breath. I quickly waved and started running again. I was glad that I had done so much intense fitness training while the others were doing combat with alms. I had no idea where Fidelia was going to be, so I tried to think like her. I ended up running north. All the trees looked the same in the dark, and I was no longer glowing. Despite the cold however, I was quite warm. My jacket managed to break the biting wind that was swirling ferociously. I couldn't see any one or anything, it was getting ridiculous, how big was this forest anyway?

I had been running for at least an hour, and underneath my jacket, I was sweating. I needed a little rest so I slowed down to a walk. I pulled my bag off my shoulder an pulled out one of two drink bottles. I drank a few mouthfuls and slid the bottle back into the bag. I kept walking and stayed alert, listening for any sounds. I thought that I had been given a near impossible task. I felt a cool drip of water fall onto my forehead. I wiped it off and looked up expecting to see a dark cloudy sky.

Instead I saw Fidelia hanging in a net, her mouth covered by a rag and ropes bounding her hands and feet together. Her eyes widened when she saw me and she started to thrash in the net.

'Shh, stop moving! I'll get you out okay, be quiet.' I hissed. I hoisted my pack back onto my back and started to climb the tree. Fidelia kept on trying to shout, but her voice was muffled by the rag and despite my efforts to keep her quiet she continued to thrash. I had almost reached her when she managed to spit the rag out.

'For fucks sake Mags, take a hint! It's a trap. Now we're fucked.' She groaned.

I looked up and saw smirking Nestor. As my eyes focused, I realised that it wasn't just Nestor in the tree, but Charline, Hyun and a few others I couldn't make out.

'You're all lucked out Magdalene.' Nestor growled.

The last thing I remembered was Nestor leaping on top of me, and me falling from the near top of the tree.
