Pain

A four-letter word that has many meanings.

Pain could be stumbling your toe on the couch. Your first heartbreak. Death of someone you love.

The four-letter word had an endless amount of examples and meanings.

But to Aveleigh Willow-Gilbert pain was a part of life.

Aveleigh remembers the first time she felt pain. Felt grief. Felt fear.

She was three years old.

She doesn't remember much but she remembers a noise walking downstairs. And then a much of blood.

Her mother pleading and sobbing as some man held her by her throat. She thinks she made a sound maybe and he turned to her.

His eyes.

His eyes Aveleigh could never forget.

They were full of evilness. Darkness. Humanity she didn't think existed in his eyes.

And that's all she remembered.

The next thing she remembers is being held in comforting arms who tells her she's safe.

She didn't know the woman. She didn't know why she felt like she was safe but she did.

Aveleigh could never forget that night. Even after she was adopted by the Gilbert family. They already had a daughter Aveleigh's age and a year-old son.

After that Aveleigh had a normal childhood. Well if you can call having nightmares every night and her bones always aching normal then it was normal.

The Gilberts never treated Aveleigh differently from their other children. Everyone knew she was adopted and the Gilbert's even kept her mother's last name they just added Gilbert after it.

They did inform the girl she could go by either when she was older. It was her decision.

The next time Aveleigh felt pain, it was the type of pain they broke you. Destroyed her very soul.

The night of May 23, 2009.

Elena and Aveleigh both decided to skip family game night to head towards the end of the year bonfire.

Aveleigh and her boyfriend Tommy decided to leave after Aveleigh saw a text from Elena that their parents were on the way to pick her up.

Aveleigh was going to go with them but Tommy wanted her to come with him.

Aveleigh agreed and she wished she didn't.

Tommy told her he was fine to drive. He didn't drink that much.

It wasn't until they were about to the Wickery Board that Aveleigh realized he was drunk.

Aveleigh remembered unbuckling her seatbelt and demanding he pull over to let her out. She remembers screaming at him not knowing how he could be so reckless and idiotic.

And then she felt as if she was flying.

Tommy swerved and lost control of the truck and ran into the tree.

He died on impact.

Aveleigh went flying out of the front windshield of the truck from the force and landed on the ground.ย  ย

Aveleigh doesn't remember what happened that much after. She remembers pain and something in her knew she was going to die.

And then a pair of the brightest blue eyes leaned over her.

And then came until she walked up to the hospital with Jeremy clutching her hand as he slept beside her.

Then he told her what happened that night.

Tommy died. Her parents died.

Elena somehow lived.

Along with Aveleigh.

Neither knew how they survived or why they did.

Why did they live and others died? What was the point? What made them special?

For the next few months, the two sisters clung to each other. For they were the only ones who knew how the other felt.

They knew all about the nightmares. The self-hatred. The PTSD.

They were each other's rocks through it.

But then the new school year starts.

And two new brothers come to town.

And with them, everything changes.

Everything Aveleigh thought she knew changes.

She finds other things that she sort of wishes she never did.

She finds out how she is.

But most importantly who her father is.ย

She finds love when she didn't think she ever would, but with love comes pain. With love comes heartbreak.

She becomes the light surrounded by darkness. Their light in endless amount of darkness. The light they did not deserve and knew it.

But how long can darkness be kept at bay? How long till she becomes the thing everyone feared?

For she was her father's daughter?

I'm thinking maybe perhaps WTS!

And I'm leaning more towards Katherine due to who her Father is.
