Chapter - 44 Past [1]

Mary Wecklic

2001

Time's a flying creature. It never standstill. A year has flown since I and Jaro broke our friendship. We are now in junior year and Michelle is in senior year. What amuses is how he is still keeping up with her. Surely he is exhausted by her, I can sense it in his eyes.

In this past year, he made many futile attempts to contact but I had been harsh but Anthea had been harsher on him. It surely cost me a great deal to be heartless near him but he left me no other choice.

"Ready to go?" Anthea asked draping a hand over me. Anthea has been a real sweetheart to me and helped me forget him a bit. Deep down I know I could never forget him. Not completely at least. Anthea is like my second best friend here. She got here three years ago. She has beautiful platinum blonde and brown almond eyes. She is pretty but way too skinny. Sometimes she appear as a bag of bones, like Jaro would say.

"Sure, girlfriend," I gave her a bright smile and walked towards the school. She became my walking partner to school. I miss our trio though.

"Mary," I heard a voice. I know who's that is. I could recognize it even from a thick crowd. "Mary, you will never talk to me?" His beautiful raven eyes looked pathetic.

"She will not." Anthea answered it for me. Ever since Jaro hurt me by choosing Michelle over me, Anthea made loathing him her own personal hobby. At moments I wonder if she is way too cold on him. Anthea, Jaro and I were good pals back in days.

"Anthea, seriously? I wasn't talking to you, bones," Jaro snapped at her. He used to tease her bones ever since she arrived because of her appearance. "We are friends. I don't understand why you hate me vehemently. If you could, try to smoothen up the things between us. If not then shut your mouth, shoddy. Don't add fire with your words," He burst.

I seldom see him this exasperated. Anthea must have got on his nerves.

"This is how you address a woman? Wait, a woman you call your friend? Your lack of decent vocabulary suffice that, oaf" she sassed.

"What do you want, Jaro?" I finally spoke up. Anthea started giving me the looks. I moved my pupils to stare at my feet. I don't wanna look at her with her sharp as a razor sight burning into me.

"You," He said firmly.

As much as he meant it platonically, my silly heart couldn't help it but find it romantically. She was right. I shouldn't had talked to him. Not when he still has this immense effect on me.

"I think you mistook Mary for Michelle. Go and tell that to your cretinous girlfriend, J-dwag." Anthea spat. Jaro teased her bones where as she always teased him calling J-dwag. She shared that she had a pet dog which looked similar to Jaro and he was funny as Jaro. But now they both claw at each other like wild cats. Maybe I even destroyed his and Anthea's friendship too, along with ours.

"Mary. Please tell her to back off. I do not wish to participate in a verbal abuse. If she doesn't withdraw, I might even defame myself as a woman hitter. She has been ruffling with my feathers for quite some time now," He added.

I mean yeah, even I thought Anthea is being more dramatic. I and Jaro has our issues. There is no need for her to be so cruel to him. Maybe she loves me a lot to loathe him. Either way that pissed him off real bad.

"Anthea, why don't you go to school? I will catch up with soon," I tried to send her off. She refused to do so. I almost had to push her on the feet to get her moving. She threw a disgusting face at Jaro.

"Now, what is it?" I uttered coldly.

"Please. I want us to be friends again. You know, you are my only friend. I mean, there is bones but she hates me way too much now and I know what is friendship because of you. You were there for me always. You are my constant. How am I supposed to live without you being my friend when I see you every day? Our friendship means a lot to me, Mary. Stop punishing me. Punishing us. Punishing our friendship," He pleaded.

"Jaro, I will be more than content to be your friend again. But you know, what you need to do to be my friend again," I worded.

"Prioritizing friendship over love? Mary those are two different things," Jaro yelled. "Why don't you understand it?" He shrieked.

"Jaro. I can not do this again and again. She is a bad person. Me or her. There is no other way around," I said, ready to leave.

"Prove it to me," Jaro blurted. "Prove it to me that she is a bad person. I will leave her," He assured. "I gave her my word that I wouldn't leave her. You know, how much I value my promise," He panted. Yes. I know. He honours words and promises a lot.

"But, I am willing to break it. Break it for you. For our friendship. Just prove it to me," He breathed.

"If I prove, you will leave her for sure?" I pointed.

"Yes. I will. I break up with her. I will never even meet my eyes to hers. But if you couldn't then you need to promise me that you will be my pal again and you need to accept me and Michelle," He added a twist.

"Okay," I uttered. I have faith in me that I could definitely show him her dark shadows. I started to move towards the school. Anthea is gonna be mad with our deal.

"By the way, could- could you please tell bones-" He hesitated. "Please tell Anthea I am sorry. I mean her no harm. It's- it's just the way she behaves led me to loose my cool. I really am sorry. Convey that to her," He regretted. I nodded and left.

......

"You are completely, unbelievable. You are a simpleton. Dolt. Dullard. Bovine. Moron. Imbecile. obtuse. Idiot. Daft," Anthea went on.

"I didn't ask you the synonyms of stupid, Anthea," I interrupted her.

"You know there is perfect synonym of stupid, Mary," She reached for her bag. She twiddled her fingers navigating her bag, searching for something. She took out a mirror. "Here you go, you will find the perfect synonym of the stupid person. Go head and check it out," She mocked, passing me the mirror.

"Haha, very funny, Anthea," I exasperated.

"Yes. It really is, Sherlock Holmes. Go. Go and find all about Michelle Cornelle now and prove it to that dog named Jaro," She said frustrated.

"Hello, girls. I heard mention of my name," Jaro joined to our table. It was lunch bell. Usually all three of us seat and have our lunch until a year ago.

"Jag off," Anthea yelled.

"Bones," Jaro reached Anthea. "I really am sorry, lass. Please forgive me," He pleaded. She rolled her eyes.

"Rude. Now you unleashed a tickle monster upon you. He is all ready to attack you. Beware," Jaro started to tickle. He tickled her stomach and ribcage. She cried of laughter. No matter how pissed off Anthea is, tickling her is a way out to get into her good graces.

"J-dwag, stop. Stop. Alright. I forgive you," She wept.

Seeing them so jovial and happy made me feel content. I laughed too.

"Pretty laugh" Anthea commented.

"I agree. I missed that. I missed this. I missed us," He declared.

"Correction. Your girlfriend made you loose it all," She spat. Jaro darkened his gaze around her. No. Don't spoil this moment. I reached my hand to shush Jaro from making any further comments. We all had our lunch in quietude after a long time. Just like good old times.

..........

"Stalking is a crime," Anthea blew words in my ear with squawked. "It is illegal and unethical. Out of all, it is way out of your character," She folded her hands as she caught me staring at Michelle's house.

Anthea threw her platinum blonde hair into a messy bun. She's dressed completely in black. Tight black jeans and a shirt. "Nice jeans," I complimented out of blue.

"Really?"

"Yes, really. Plus staring isn't stalking. Why don't you go to the foster care and do the homework. I will be back soon. Go please," I commanded.

"So, you could stalk/stare at her house more freely without my interruption? Do you have any idea how weird it looks when anyone finds out you drooling on that house like its a palatable pizza." She questioned, comprehending my motto.

"I said go," I chirped and budged to her house. I pulled out my phone from my pocket. To gape at the picture my camera clicked. Anthea spotted Michelle smooching a guy from her class, in the cafeteria. I don't know what his name is. She urged that this is evidence enough to prove to Jaro that she's a crook.

But I feel like I need to know more about this. About her.

I reached her porch. It's a small blue painted house. Decent and simple. I rang the door bell, lost in my own thoughts. The door wide opened. A lady in her 40's appeared. She looked a bit short and has grey eyes. brownish red hair. I am unable to tell if she's redhead or a brunette. Her hair is iridescent and dainty.

"Hello, Mrs. Cornelle. I am Mary Wecklic. My principal told me that you wanted to see me and you are unable to come to school by yourself as you have had a leg injury recently. He also added that you requested an audience with me," I explained. She nodded.

"Yes, please. Come inside my dear. I really wanted to give you my sincerest and honest apologies," She gestured me inside indicating to have a seat on the sofa. Looks like that glaikit Michelle isn't home yet.

"I don't know what's gotten into her. It is in my best intentions to see her grow into a better person and-, and I hear things about her like this again and again. Gail from 7th grade, Nancy from 9th grade, Sheri from sophomore and now you. The past keeps repeating," She choked. "I think there is something wrong with her. Maybe she has some sorta mental illness," She talked to herself.
