Chapter - 17 Pink Ribbon
Lana pipes
"I CAN'T BELIEVE MY EYES," Glendora shouted with great stupefaction. The way she said it, Scott rushed over here to make sure his crush was okay, who doesn't know that her best friend has feelings for her? The way she yelled it almost even gave me a heart attack.
I shifted my sight from Glenny to my school locker. I can't believe my eyes either. My locker, my locker is filled with white roses with a small adorable greeting card hung to that white rose bouquet. Glenny is eagerly looking at me to open that greeting card.
I let out a breath and began to ajar it.
Dear Lana,
I know you aren't a huge fan of these romantic, lovely gestures. But today while coming to school I saw this breathtaking white rose bouquet and it reminded me of you. Please accept it, pretty.
With love
your Pax
Xoxo
I blushed. Glenny pulled it from my hand and began reading out loud. Now I am filled with shyness. Even Scott gave me a little smile. After reading, Glenny's eyes flashed with taunt.
"Well....," She coughed.
"Say it," I said with disgust and a little bit reticent.
"Looks like he means it Lana," She placed her right hand on my shoulder. "I didn't believe him when you shared about your conversation with him yesterday. But maybe he is changing for you. To be a better man," Glenny smiled. I smiled back.
I gazed over Scott to hear his thoughts. It has always been like this with three of us. Always hearing each other's opinions, that's how we survived over years of this significant friendship.
"White rose symbolizes loyalty, purity and innocence's. You know my opinion, Lan, do what's best for you," He gave me an honest smile. "You have got us," He added.
"I hope I didn't creep you out," Paxton mused abruptly from behind. I was startled. "Was it too much?" he blabbed.
"No, you silly," I assured him holding his hand. "It was perfect," His hazel eyes glammed looking at me. I reached his lips to give him a kiss to show my gratitude.
Glendora adjusted her voice causing enough noise to disturb us. It was intentional. I gave her one of my mean looks. She burst out laughing.
"Oh god, when is it my time to have these romantic gestures?" She prayed looking up.
The boy beside you would give you this whole damn world if you ask, you naïve girl. I thought to myself.
"Glenny, actually, um, I was at the carnival fair yesterday and I saw this ribbon. I know how much you cherish these things, so I bought you one," Scott uttered taking a ribbon out of his pocket.
"That's a fetching ribbon," I exclaimed.
But Glendora appeared like she was trying to process what was happening here.
"Pretty," She declared taking that delightful pink ribbon into her hands. She indeed would look appealing in that ribbon in her usual high ponytail with her beautiful golden blonde hair. For some reason, Glendora looked suspicious of his present.
"I got something for you love birds too," Scott smiled looking at me and Paxton. I and Pax shared a confused look at Scott.
"I was playing High striker and guess what?" He stopped leaving in the suspense. I arched my brow to continue. "I won twice. And got two tickets to a karaoke event next Friday," He folded his hands with a smug. And handed over those tickets to us. I thanked him with a hug. Pax nodded his head conveying a thank you through his hazel eyes.
"You, culprit!" Glenny knocked his right arm. "You had all the fun without us," She flustered.
"Well. I didn't plan to go alone you know, remember I did ask you ladies for a movie yesterday. You guys took a raincheck," Scott defended himself.
"Speaking of, it did rain yesterday, how did you go?" I questioned.
"I was bored and had nothing to do," He looked at Glenny. "I went after drizzle stopped," He added.
"I want to go to the carnival too," Glenny pouted. "I love these things," She said adjusting her blonde high ponytail.
"There is a heart-themed party on Friday night. I heard it would be lovely. You and I could go, you know," Scott stopped hesitating to form the next sentence.
"Amazing you and Glenny could go. I and Paxton will go to a karaoke party," I blurted with huge excitement.
"But without you? I and Scott alone?" Glendora eyed.
"Just go!" I yelled. She agreed. I can already see Scott on cloud nine with her approval.
Everything was fine. Splendid and magnificent. Until we heard Neilson Norg's scream. We all turned our heads instantly at him to see what caused him to clamour. He hit his hand while shutting his locker. He is bleeding.
Glendora rushed to him forthwith. And so did all. She took his right hand covered with ichor and scanned the wound. Without a second thought, she wiped his hand and tied it with her pink ribbon. The ribbon that Scott gave her with love. That adorable pink thing is now perfused.
I cringed. Scott went rigid. Expressionless seeing that sight. She took his hands into hers and left to get the first aid.
"He was the reason why you didn't tell her about my love, wasn't he?" Scott questioned with watery eyes. I nodded with gloom.
"Looks like it is more than just a dumb crush," He sighed.
"Scott, don't you dare give up yet," I assured. He smiled sadly and left. Now I can't help being moody. Paxton squeezed my hand to make sure I was okay. I glanced at him.
While we were moving to the class, I spotted Aunt Layla, Glenny's mom. What is she doing here at this hour? I instructed Pax to go to the class and I reached out to her. Her eyes were searching for her daughter.
"Aunt Layla," I shouted. She was almost startled. "Oh, Lana, do you know where is Glendora?" She asked. Well, your stupid daughter, who is also my dear friend ruined my best friend's present by helping her crush get cleaned from blood. I very well can't do that. "She is in the loo," I breathed.
"I see, I am gonna be late today at home, so could you please hand over these keys to her and say to be safe at home?" Her golden eyes pleaded with me.
"Aunt Layla, why did you take the trouble to come here to just give the key? You could have called me instead. I and Glenny would have been at my home until you returned," I suggested.
"I didn't wanna cause you guys any trouble," She smiled awkwardly adjusting her blonde braided hair. Understandable. Mom never made the Weklics feel welcomed at our house. Especially since we are on our edges might not be a good time to have her over.
"Okay, I will hand over the keys to Glenny and say you are busy with work," I worded, taking the keys. "Oh, no. I am not busy with work. I am just gonna meet up with a guy," She clarified.
I gave a weird expression. "Oh, that sounded insane. My bad. I gonna meet your neighbour actually," She said closing her eyes to make use of the right words.
"Jaro? Why" I questioned without a second thought.
"He is my sister Mary's classmate," She answered, looking at her watch to check the time.
What? He is Layla's sister Mary's classmate? That explains why he was so shocked when he learned my middle name was Mary.
"But auntie, isn't your sister is," I didn't finish the sentence. Well, she ghosted everyone. I never met her nor did Glenny. Dad says Layla has been searching for her sister for years.
"Yes. I am going to meet him to know where she is and how she is," She said lost in her thoughts. "Well, I gotta go now. Bye," She bid her farewell and left.
How many people does this Jaro even know? He knows Layla. her long-lost sister Mary, I am pretty sure he knows Mom too. What role does he have in all this? Who even is he?
