You Met Him on the Phone-Part 2
You were sitting on your bed Indian style with your right hand nervously playing with your hair and your eyes locked on the phone that was placed in front of you. You were waiting for it to ring. 'C'mon, c'mon! Ah when is he gonna call? Is he even gonna call me?' you see now... your head was a complete mess and you couldn't even get a straight answer to why was that so.
Here's the situation: you're looking at your phone and impatiently waiting for Jack to call you like he's been doing every night for 3 weeks and at the same time you're thinking, trying to figure out why do you want him to call you so badly and why do you find such pleasure in talking to this stranger? Well, it wasn't fair to say he was a complete stranger to you... On the one hand, the two of you have been talking so much and about pretty much everything so you felt so connected to him and like you really know him, and on the other hand, you've never even seen him! But then again he was Glenda's friend and she was close to your family so you suppose this should make him less stranger, if this makes any sense. But there was one thing that made absolutely no sense to you and no matter how much thinking you've been doing, you always hit dead end - why were you so drawn to him? What was it that pulled you so strongly towards a man you've never even seen? Every morning you would wake up only to wait for the sun to set so that you can talk to him. You would brush your teeth and think 'Is he still sleeping now?'. You would have breakfast and think 'Does he eat in the morning or is he one of those persons who skip breakfast?'. You would be at college and think how long your lessons are and you would constantly look at your watch and think that time has stopped and the sun doesn't want to go away. You pretty much turned into a vampire - you love the night! He told you that he's very busy with his work and can, therefore, only talk at night. He would usually call you around 8, 9, sometimes 10 or 11 and you'd talk for hours.
RING*RING*RING
'It's him, it's him!' you literally took the phone in your hand the same second as it rung. Oh wait! No, you can't pick up immediately. What was he going to think? That you sit all evening with the phone in your hand, waiting for his call? Well, that was a true story but you didn't want to let him know that. So you waited for the phone to ring a few times, straightened your back, fixed your voice and picked up.
YN: "Hi!" you tried to play it cool.
Jack: "Hiiii, YN, how are you feeling, girl?" you could feel in his voice he was happy to hear you.
YN: "I'm great, thank you. How are you?" you loved it when he called you girl. So much for playing cool. Now you had a big smile on your face and your voice became like happy Christmas bells. There was no way you can hide it.
Jack: "I'm fine but I'm kinda tired. I've been working aaall day! I just got home..."
YN: "You just got home?" you were surprised because it was around 9pm. This meant he's been really working like ALL day long.
Jack: "Yeah."
YN: "By the way, you never told me anything about your job... what do you do?"
Jack: "Ahmm, well I.... you know ..." you felt he got nerves. Maybe you shouldn't have asked that. "I ahh... do things for one entertainer..."
YN: "Really? So you're in the show business?" you asked with excitement.
Jack: "Yes, I am."
YN: "So, who is it?"
Jack: "Who's what?"
YN: "Who's the entertainer that you're working for?"
Jack: "Ohh that... well it's ah ..." he paused, then courageously said "Michael Jackson."
YN: "Michael Jackson? You working for MICHAEL JACKSON?" your jaw dropped. "OMG! I can't believe it, this must be awesome?!" your voice went even higher from the excitement.
Jack: "Well, I guess it should be..." was there something sad in his voice or were you simply too excited?
YN: "Oh boy, I read like two days ago in this paper something about him being all weird and sleeping in some kind of oxygen chamber!" he paused, then all of a sudden said:
Jack: "Do you believe that, girl?"
YN: "Believe what?" your head was a hot mess right now and it seemed like you had hard time understanding his words so you asked.
Jack: "The oxygen chamber story and all those... stuff they're saying about m- ah h-him?"
YN: "Not really. No. 'Cause I know how the media is and how they like to "spice up" their stories and even manipulate. But even if it were true, I don't care and I don't wanna judge! People like to judge people and talk about them in a nasty way but I believe there is only one judge in this world and it is God. Only he can judge, ya know? I-I am no one to do that... I myself don't want to be judged and that's why I don't do it, see?" you were very passionate when it came to a few topics and one of them was judging people because you've been there before and you know how it feels. He didn't say anything so you jumped in "Am I right? Do you agree with me?"
Jack: "Yes.." he's yes was almost inaudible.
YN: "I mean, let the man do what he wants and if sleeping in oxygen chamber makes him feel good then that's what he should do!" silence followed for a minute until he dryly said:
Jack: "YN, I have to hang up. I'll call you back soon."
YN: "Sure." you said and as your lips were beginning to form the word 'bye' he hung up.
Ok, what did just happen? 'Was it something I said? Did I somehow offend him?' You never before had your conversations this short. 'And what does soon mean? When is soon? Oh man don't tell me I messed up this relationship! Wait.... what if he never calls me again?' Geez you were really worried. The thought of you never hearing his voice again made you sad and you didn't know why. Then all of a sudden, you realized you were attached to him... but what kind of attachment was it? Was it love? No! It can't be... you don't know him well enough, do you? And on top of that, you don't know what the guy looks like! But that wasn't important to you. You cared more about the personality and qualities a man has, the heart, the soul, if he truly loves you... You didn't want more men like your ex or Martin. No way!
RING*RING*RING suddenly it rang again. It was him.
YN: "Hello?"
Jack: "Hey, YN. Sorry about earlier but something came up so..."
YN: "No, no it's completely fine, don't worry about it!" your voice rung like a bell again, filled with happiness that he apologized and that everything seemed to be fine, until .....
Jack: "I wanna see you." he said out of the blue.
Your body tensed and you simply froze. You'd never expected this! You didn't know what to say...
Jack: "Are you still there, girl?"
You had to get yourself together. Be cool.
YN: "Yes, yes, I am. Well, that's fine! Just give me your address and I'm gonna send you some pictures!" and God knows you tried to sound as normal as possible.
Jack: "Ahhh..." he sighed. "I want no pictures. I wanna see you in person."
YN: "Oh in person? Like you... you want us t-to... you know meet?"
Jack: "Yes. That's what I want." he stayed so calm while you were so nervous that you were beginning to stutter. "What about you?"
YN: "What about me?" you didn't understand a word he was saying.
Jack: "Do you wanna see... me?" his voice went softer.
YN: "Oh, yes yes, of c-course!" did you just say you want to meet him?
Jack: "It's settled then. YN, I have to go now, girl, but next time I call, which will be tomorrow, we'll decide when we'll meet. Sounds good?"
YN: "Yeah, sure!"
Jack: "Well then... 'till tomorrow."
YN: "Bye."
You liked talking to him. You felt attracted to him. You loved his voice. He made you feel happy, peaceful and better about yourself. But did you want to see him? Or were you ready to meet him? You never thought about meeting him.
Hundreds of questions started haunting your mind - was he going to like you, what if he thought you're ugly or stupid or fat... and then turn you down like Martin did? Oh hell no! You couldn't survive another situation like this because it hurts a lot. 'Stop it! STOP YN! This is not a romantic date, it's just a meeting between two friends! Yes, exactly. And that's why there's nothing to worry about!' you assured yourself. And if you logically think about it, you'll see it's true. You felt better after this and went to bed. Logic is a good thing, unfortunately, won't work in your case.
Next day. You and Jack on the phone:
Jack: "YN, are you sure you want to do this? You sound... different... since yesterday"
YN: "Me? Different? Uh-uh. That's probably from the connection."
Jack: "'Cause I-I don't wanna push you into this, ya know? It seems to me like you don't really wanna do it..."
YN: "What? Nooo, why would you think like that?"
Jack: "Well, you seem nervous... "
YN: "Who me? Nervous? Noo way. I ain't nervous! I'm completely fine with it! So when do we meet and where?"
Jack: "If you say so... Do you know XX Park?"
YN: "Yes!"
Jack: "And the big water fountain?"
YN: "Yes!"
Jack: "Good. How about Saturday 1pm?"
YN: "Sounds great! Yeah..."
Jack: "Sooooo, seems like we have a date." what? Did he say date?
YN: "Yes."
Jack: "Aren't you forgetting something?" forgetting something? What did he mean?
YN: "Excuse me?"
Jack: "How am I gonna know it's you and you it's me? Tell me what you gonna wear or something like that..."
YN: "Oh, of course. Well, I-I... I'll be wearing a red dress." you remembered your most fav dress in the world - which was the red dress - so you decided you should wear it.
Jack: "Alright. I'll be carrying red roses for you." roses?
YN: "Oh .. ahmm so we won't have difficulties finding each other." you blushed.
Jack: "No."
YN: "Jack?"
Jack: "Yes?"
YN: "What if I'm not what you expected me to be?"
Jack: "Girl, you are everything I expect you to be, trust me." he paused and then said "I only hope I am what you expected me to be..." his voice cracked.
You never figured out what he meant. You only knew you two had a date, he's going to give you flowers and you had to do your best.
Saturday 12: 52
People were walking in all directions, talking, laughing.. children were playing around and you stood still in front of the big fountain watching the water flow and build beautiful forms. The air was fresh. It smelled of green plants and water. The weather was nice too. The sun was caressing your body. Perfect for your red dress. You've never been more nervous in your life. If your mother only knew what you were about to do now, she would freak out and drag you by the hair home! Anyway, it's a good thing she's not here. But it wasn't good that you were so nervous and statue-like. You had the feeling that if you opened your mouth, you wouldn't be able to speak correctly, you'd stutter. But on the bright side, you were the only one wearing a red dress. 'Was that a little humor? It wasn't funny YN!'
Few minutes later.
You felt a tap on the shoulder which caused you to jump a little. You quickly turned around and there stood a chocolate-skin man with huge smile on his face, holding a bouquet of blood-red, fresh roses. "Hi." He said, showing he's snow white teeth.
Saturday, same day, 10am
Glenda: "YOU DID WHAT?" she said in amazement.
Michael: "You heard me right, Glenda, I asked her out, I'm really gonna do it! I'm on my way to the park to meet her."
Glenda: "Michael, you CRAZY MAN! I don't believe you, no!!"
Michael: "Believe it if you will."
Glenda: "Oh my God! But how..? I-I you can't just go to the park! You Michael Jackson, DID YOU FORGET?"
Michael: "No. Today I'm not."
Glenda: "Holly heavens.... what do you mean? No, don't tell me! I'm afraid to hear the answer!!"
Michael: "I'm wearing a mask and a wig. I look like a different person. No one would know it's me!"
Glenda: "Wait... Are you telling me you had your make up artists transform you into a different person so that you can go meet YN without her knowing who you really are?!!!?"
Michael: "Yes."
Glenda: "Dear Lord, this man has lost his MIND!"
Michael: "Yes, I have."
Glenda: "Michael, I seriously think this is not a good idea! You're lying to her for goodness sake! I didn't say anything when you told me you presented yourself as some Jack but this time...I mean this is serious! Please don't do this! Just call her and say something came up and you can't go!"
Michael: "No, Glenda, I'm going. For the first time in my life I feel like I'm doing the right thing and I'm not turning back now! And if you really are my friend, you'd understand me."
Glenda: "But Micha-"
Michael: "NO! Don't say anything 'cause it won't change my mind I'm going! And if you really want to help me and support like you've said before, you won't warn her and you'd just let me do this!" he hung up.
