You Met Him on the Phone-Part 1

Imagine you were a college student in Europe. Your parents divorced when you were only 5 years old and since your mother was very depressed after the divorce, she wanted to start all over again far away from America. This is the reason why you're in Europe now - one day she just said to you
"We're leaving, YN..." then she took you and went to live in Europe.

Anyways, the next semester was about to start and you were really excited about it. If it wasn't for the fact that this year you were going to be studying in America, you'd propably think you're crazy. I mean who on Earth could be excited about all the sleepless nights that were to come, spent studying and doing homeworks? You've been living in Europe for more then 15 years and you really miss your home. Moreover, this semester abroad was your chance to prove yourself you're a grown woman and can survive on your own. You were going to live alone for the first time and this meant do whatever you like!

You're leaving tomorrow so right now you're packing your things. You don't want to forget anything since you're going to be in America for a longer time. "You need my help, honey?" your mom asked as she was entering your room. "No, thanks mom, I'm almost done here." you replied. "Okay, baby. Make sure you don't forget anything!" she said with a concerned look on her face. You noticed that "Mom, don't worry please, I'm going to be just fine!" you said while placing your hand on her shoulder, "And you know I'll have Glenda to look after me so I won't be completely alone there. And let's not forget I'm a big girl!" you smiled, trying to cheer her up. She smiled back at you and gave you a big warm hug. "I know honey... I know. But please be careful and call me as much as you can!" "Yes mom!". "Okay now. Hurry up and pack your things. You're leaving early in the morning so you need to get some sleep."

After finishing packing your stuff, you took a shower and went to bed. You couldn't really sleep because you were excited and eager to start your new life. Around 4am you finally fell asleep until the alarm woke you up at 5am. But that was ok, you were happy 'cause it was finally time to go! Your mom sent you off to the airport and she made you promise her many things like "Please call me" or "Be very careful"... you know the usual stuff moms say.

You relaxed your head back on the seat of the airplane and closed your eyes. Everything turned black as you fell alseep.

-----------In America----------

It's been one month since your arrival in California and your life here wasn't exactly what you had expected it to be - you've made a few friends and hung out with them from time to time, and that was good, but there was this boy at college, Martin. You really really liked him. Unfortunately, he didn't even know you existed. Your only relief was to go out by yourself and just walk in whatever direction... You loved Los Angeles and your "new hobby" was to watch the city and the people. This made you forget about Martin. At this point, you felt like your life was empty. First of all, you were going to college without even knowing why. At first you were motivated but then your motivation slowly vanished as you found no meaning in life. Your ex boyfriend in Europe dumped you because of another girl and the guy you like now, doesn't even know you're there. Secondly, you had those thoughts about your father to whom you haven't spoken since you and your mother left America. Did he even remember you? Hardly. It was good that Glenda was a long time friend of your mom and she invited you to dinner at her house every friday. She had a big family and you felt some kind of warmess there. It's like the family you never had. If you only knew that this woman was about to change your life forever...

"YN, could you please help me set the table, dear?" Glenda whispered because she was on the phone talking to a family friend and giving you a sign she can't set the table herself because of the phone in her hand. "Sure, Glenda." you replied. It seemed like this friend was almost part of the family, or at least a very close one, since they were talking A LOT with him. Glenda was talking to him, her husband too and even their children who were now running around the house just playing and having fun. You liked the atmosphere they created. It was fun and warm and at the same time somehow painful too for it remined you of what you didn't have. 'Jeez, do I always have to think like that and make everyhing that's nice seem sad?' you asked yourself in your thoughts. Suddenly, you heard something brake. It came from the living room and it was the sound of glas. "Oh my Gosh, kids are you ok?" Glenda shouted as she started walking towards the living room. "Here, would you keep my friend company..." she said quickly as she passed you the phone and run to the living room to see what was going on in there. 'Oh man, what am I supposed to do now? She just gave me the phone and asked me to speak to someone I don't know. I don't like talking to strangers. I'm not comfortable with people I don't know. I just gotta do it, she is kind with me and always invites me and makes food for me...' this was running in your head for a few seconds before you placed the phone close to your ear.

YN: "Hello?"
Friend: "Hi." soft voice came through the phone. Silence followed for a few seconds, awkward, then he broke it.
Friend: "Sooo, you're Glenda's friend, right?"
YN: "Ahmm yes I am. Well, actually my mom's Glenda's friend and I'm just visiting..." man, he did not need to know that. You were so nervous that stupidy took over you.
Friend: "Really, because Glenda talks a lot about you."
YN: "She does?!" you asked surprised.
Friend: "She does." his voice went deeper. A few seconds of silence followed, when he said "Well, let me introduce myself. I'mmm...." he went silent again as if he had forgotten his own name. " ... Jack."
YN: "Nice to meet you, Jack. I'm YN." you replied immediately.
Jack: "Nice to meet you too, YN." silence again. "Sooo, where did Glenda go?"
YN: "Oh ahmm... she went to check on the kids 'cause they broke something in the living room" you answered his question.
Jack: "They okay?"
YN: "Yes, they are. They were just running around the house... you know kids... they're full of energy!" you said and let out a little laugh to hide you were feeling uncomfortable. He did the same thing.
Jack: "Yes, they are. That's why I love children so much. They have this aura around them that makes you fell, ahmmm..." he stopped for a second obviously looking for the proper word to describe his thoughts.
YN: "Happy!"
Jack: "Happy!" both of you said at the same time and you started laughing. "Yeah..." his laughter was so nice just like his voice. It seemed like saying this word at the same time kind of broke a little the ice between you and you started feeling better.
YN: "I even sometime wish I were a little kid again so I could play all day, have fun and not care about life!" you said still laughing.
Jack: "Trust me, I do too!" he replied fast. Then you saw Glenda coming... You kind of wanted to talk some more to him but you couldn't say to Glenda "Go away woman!".
YN: "Oh, Glenda's coming. Well, ahmm... it was nice talking to you, Jack."
Jack: "It was nice talking to you too, YN. I relly hope... we'll get another chance to talk again..." his voice went deeper.
YN: "I hope that too." you said almost whispering and there was a sense of embarrassment in your voice that he noticed and you felt even more embarrassed because now he knew you were embarrassed and the worst is that you let him sense that. When were you gonna learn to hide your true emotions? Never. You handed over the phone to Glenda who saw your red cheeks.
Glenda: "So you liked talking to YN?" she asked him giggling and gave you a playful push on the shoulder. "Glendaaaa" you said now with your whole face red. She couldn't help it but laugh. But you wondered, what did he reply to her?

However, after all of this was over, you had dinner and it was time for you to leave. You put you jacked on, took your purse and headed for the door. Glenda gave you a goodbye-hug and kissed your cheeks saying with a smile on her face "Well, dear, excuse me for asking but.. but is there a special man in your life?" "No, there's not.. no" you lowered your head down and this caused the both of you to giggle. "Well, you never know what might happen!" she continued and you nodded, thinkig about Martin.

Two weeks have passed and you life was getting from bad to worse. After the dinner at Glenda's and the conversation with Jack you felt sort of stronger and braver, you realized people don't bite. And let's not to mention you wanted to be one of those modern women who take control of their lives. That meant you confess Martin! And that's exaclty what you did. BIG mistake. You went to him during the break, made a joke to break the ice and confessed. The boy turned you down sying things like "I don't know you well enough", "There's another girl I like" you know, the typical crap man say when they want to get rid of you. You've never felt more embarrassed in your life. You couldn't even wait for all the classes to be over, you just went straight home, took a nice bath and buried your face into the pillows of your bed, crying for the rest of the day. You simply wanted to cry it all out, that's all.
The sun was already gone, allowing the moon to spread its silver beams upon the city. You, now calmer, were sitting on the floor infront of the big window, watching people walk and mix with the city lights. 'I'll just go for a walk, it might cheer me up a little' you decided and got up, starting to get dressed. Then suddenly, the phone rung. 'Who could this be?' you grabbed your phone and looked at the number - you have no idea who this was. You didn't feel like talking and decided not to pick up but yet your naive self hoped that this might be Martin. He might have changed his mind after today's talk, so in the end you pressed the green button.

YN: "Hello?"
Jack: "Hi, it's me ... Jack"
YN: "Oh hi Jack. Nice to ahm hear you!" you said that out of mere courtesy. You mean Jack? Really?
Jack: "Nice to hear you too. Ahm... Glenda gave me your number, hope you don't mind?"
YN: "Oh of course not!" you tried to make that sound as natural and innocent as possible.
Jack: "I'm glad." a few second of silent "So, what are you doing?" you had the feeling he was trying to start a conversation but didn't know how and this question was the first thing that came to his mind.
YN: "Well, I was gonna go out and" he cut you off.
Jack: "Oh I'm sorry I didn't mean to interrupt you!" his voice was so soft.
YN: "Nooo it's ok, you're not interrupting me, actually I don't feel like going out. I was gonna do it because I like to watch the city, it calms me down. I had a hard day." you said all that and couldn't believe it. Why were you telling him that?
Jack: "Hard day, huh? Tell me about it... that's all I've been having lately...?" ok now, why did he tell you that?
YN: "I just... I... had my heart broken for the second time."
Jack: "You're lucky it's only two times. The fingers on my hands are not enough to count how many times my heart was broken..." his voice went really low and you could feel his pain.
YN: "Jack... I'm sorry..." then all of a sudden you started crying. You just couldn't help it. All this pain you were hiding in you wanted to make a way out of your soul.  And at the same time you were thinking 'What is going on here?'

-------Earlier that day--------

Glenda: "I'm 100% sure about this girl, trust me Michael!"
Michael: "Alright if you say so... I'll talk to her 'cause I really .... I-I really need to talk to someone who doesn't know me, ya know?"
Glenda: "I know. That's why I suggested this. I was waiting for the right moment to give her the phone... She's a nice girl."
