Steps {One-shot story}
The steps are right here in front of me. Just ten simple steps is all that's needed. That little journey upwards is all it takes.
Should I do it? Perhaps I could. Maybe I should.
My foot rests on the first step. The sound of your voice – your youthful, innocent voice – singing a beautiful melody soothes me. The lyrics you sing are art; each word that rings in my ears has been carefully pieced together to form a sentence, which has eventually created a song. It's also a known fact that you never sing anything if you don't mean it, which just makes it infinitely more special.
Am I really going to continue this? My life is terrible; I have nothing to lose by completing this journey. Maybe it'll even end nicely.
My feet then take me to the second step. A light, fluffy cloud forms before me; it's a vision that shows me your skilful dancing – the way you perform robotic moves with such fluidity thrills me; it sends shivers down my spine. Nothing seems to get in your way when you move.
Is this really the right choice for me? By the end of this, will I be happier? Perhaps I will.
Slowly, I head up the third step. It's then that I hear your voice again; you're singing of an Angel in disguise. The way you perform each note so gracefully causes my heart to soar with glee; your music is my escape.
I'm gradually getting closer to finishing the adventure, aren't I? Only seven steps remain.
It's then that I reach the fourth step. My bright surroundings suddenly darken, as I hear a piercing cackle that causes me to freeze in horror. But then, your reassurance that it's only human nature to feel scared makes me happier, and I suddenly see you dancing once again, in another vision. The wisps of white vapour from the clouds depict your silhouette as you glide backwards, whilst walking forwards. You're simply magical.
My sense of curiosity is forcing me onwards. I must continue up this staircase.
I then arrive at the fifth step, instantly hearing desperate cries from you; you're begging us to change our ways, and to look at ourselves before judging others. What a meaningful message you send out to us. As well as this, I see another vision, but this time, I see the most bizarre images – I see bones, and newspaper articles. Something tells me this is about your personal life.
Should I pass the halfway mark? I'm fifty percent through this little journey.
My foot walks up to the sixth step. This time, there's no music. At least, not straight away. All I hear are terrible news reports, telling of a man who has been accused of a terrible crime – one that he is incapable of doing. I hear your painful pleads of innocence, which bring tears to my eyes, but then I'm soothed, again, with your voice. You're telling us to care for our planet, and to heal it to the best of our abilities. Another selfless message.
Do I even want to finish this? It's becoming painful.
Yes, I must go on. If you lived this, I must witness it, too.
Cautiously, I reach the seventh step. The first thing I see is a dark grey rain cloud; it hovers above me, before starting to pour its droplets of sadness over. Within these droplets, I see you again. You're on your knees, collecting precious soil within your hands, trying to save the Earth from its terrible demise. Your plaintive cries fill my ears as I watch this scene; it causes a single tear to roll down each of my cheeks.
I'm almost there. I'm only three steps away, now. I'm so close.
Shakily, I go up to the eighth step. Your gentle voice weaves through the thick atmosphere, seemingly dissolving away into nothingness after each sentence. Your song seems filled with such joy and happiness; you describe the wonderment of finding an unconditional love that will never die. That love, of course, being your own children. A smile forms on my face as I hear your words; you sing with a poet's tongue.
Two steps remain, now. Will I complete this journey? I really think I might.
I rest my foot on the ninth step. The happiness of your voice has vanished now; in its place, silence occurs. A dark cloud looms over me; another vision has come to pay me a visit. This time, I see you sitting alone, weary-looking and emotionally damaged. The next thing I hear is a voice, and that voice says, "Not guilty". The darkness of the cloud lightens, but only a little, because your wounded expression doesn't seem to change after hearing those words.
This is growing difficult. Do I want to complete this? Can't I just walk back down those steps, and forget this happened?
No.
Finally, I arrive at the tenth step. This time, there's no music, and no dancing. There's no speech, and no visions. No white clouds, and no dark clouds. There's just nothingness. That is, until I look down, to find your lifeless body at my feet. A shrill cry comes from my lips, as I collapse to my knees to see if you're okay.
"No!" I protest, as if it'll change anything, "No, please!"
You don't respond at all. I knew I shouldn't have completed the journey; now I feel like I'm dying.
Up ahead, I suddenly see a bright light. It's so bright, in fact, that I'm made to shield my eyes from it. But as the light begins to subside, I see ...
I see you.
I see you before me, with silky Angel wings, and a gorgeous halo hovering above you. Your curls float freely on the gentle breeze, your deep brown eyes fixed totally on me.
You point down at the floor in front of me, then as I look at it, I notice another step forming. This one is unlike the others – it's light and airy, and looks absolutely weightless – as if made with clouds. You've created another step for me?
With no questions asked, I go up the eleventh step. Nothing happens at all, until I feel something sprouting from my back. Out of the corner of my eyes, I notice that a pair of Angel wings are forming on my own body; a halo is now also lingering above me.
"Come here," you demand, your tone inviting and calming.
So I run to you. Even though you're only a few meters away, it feels like I can't reach you soon enough. As I reach you, I jump up into your arms, feeling you hold me tightly. Heaven is wherever you are.
And now, I'm much happier ... now I've completed my journey up the steps.
~~
This one kinda came out of nowhere. I was thinking that I wanted to write a one-shot, but couldn't think of an idea. I suddenly thought "Steps", and here we are. I wrote it literally just now; it's past midnight here now!
Sorry if it's not good, and I apologise for any spelling errors in advance. xD I hope you liked it anyway! :)
